replace obamacare. >> there's new fallout tied to the russia investigation and the president's attacks with his own attorney general, jeff sessions. we're going to break it all down, starting with peter alexander. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. hours after republicans squeaked through with barely enough votes to start the debate on overhauling obamacare, they came up well short of passing a plan. they needed 60 votes but got 43. raising new questions, whether republicans can deliver on their promise to reshape what remains the health care law of the land. overnight, another setback for health care reform. the senate decisively rejecting a republican plan to repeal and replace obamacare. >> on this vote, the yae's are 43, the neas are 47. >> reporter: sending the senate back to the drawing board. the latest signed health care

will be a tough sell, as gop leaders try to find a path their party can agree on. just six hours earlier, senate republicans try to breathe new life into efforts to overhaul obamacare, with another nail-biting vote. senator john mccain making a dramatic return to the senate floor, 11 days after brain surgery, in time to cast a yes vote, even though he's not satisfied with his party's effort so far. >> i will not vote for this bill as it is today. it's a shell of a bill right now. we all know that. >> reporter: president trump, back on friendly turf, holding a campaign-style rally in ohio. hailing the senate vote and warning republicans. >> any senator who votes against repeal and replace is telling america that they are fine with the obamacare nightmare. and i predict they will have a lot of problems.

>> reporter: the president touting his achievements -- >> with few exceptions, no president has done anywhere near what we've done in his first six months. >> reporter: and mocking his opponents. >> it's time for democrats to stop resisting. that's their term. resist. resist. >> reporter: mr. trump at the white house tuesday afternoon, ramping up his public feud with his own attorney general. blasting jeff sessions recusal from the russian investigation. >> he should not have recused himself. almost immediately after he took office. and if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me prior to taking office. and i would have quite simply picked somebody else. >> reporter: amid speculation the president's trying to replace sessions with an a.g. that would be willing to shut down the russian inquiry, the president refusing to say whether he's going to fire sessions. >> very disappointed with the attorney general. but we will see what happens. time will tell.

police officers had to form a circle around him, pushing their way through a media scrum. he did not enter a plea. but his lawyer told the court that the cardinal plans to plead not guilty at a future court date. pell is pope francis' top financial adviser and the highest ranking vatican official ever charged in the sex abuse crisis. now, alarming new findings from the largest study conducted on the potential link between playing football and brain trauma. craig melvin is here with the results and how the nfl is responding. >> reporter: good morning to you. researchers from the boston school of medicine and the v.a. health care system, looked at the brains of 202 former football players and found evidence of the brain disease cte in all but one. this morning, a devastating blow to thenfl. 99% of deceased players' brains examined in a new study, showed signs of degenerative

brain disease from hits to the head. >> this is more common than we anticipated. >> reporter: cte can only be formally diagnosed with an autopsy. doctors examined brains of amateur players and found cte in 91% of college players and 91% of former high school players. the nfl says it pledged $200 million for research. and in a statement tuesday, said, the medical and scientific communities will benefit from this publication. and the nfl will continue to work with a wide range of experts to improve the health of current and former nfl athletes. >> you want to have a seat in my car. you're not sitting in the wet road. >> reporter: the family of former tackle brian price, blame cte for this outburst in front of police officers at a michigan auto parts store in april. price charging into the heavy

angeles station was taken by the inmates themselves. it documents their escape and their time on the run. a jailbreak that embarrassed local authorities and terrified this region for days. ♪ released with music, the edited video, takes you inside the maximum security wing at the orange county jail. that's where three dangerous inmates executed their daring es came. grinning for a cell phone smuggled in, the men begin their caper by removing the steal grate from a bunk. the video goes silent, as the first inmate seimilar shimmies the hole, giving the all-clear to a theme song. inside the jail walls, the men remove a series of bars, using rope and sloth, creating a ladder, snapping photos of their

experts will be analyzing that data, trying to understand who may have been at fault in this accident. this morning, venus williams is coming out swinging, off the court. the tennis star's legal team saying she's not to blame for a car crash that killed 78-year-old jerome barsen and injured his wife, linda. instead, suggesting the elderly couple was at fault. >> there's no words to describe. >> reporter: earlier this month at wimbledon, williams broke down in tears while discussing the accident. >> maybe i should go. >> reporter: in court documents filed in response of a wrongful death filed by the barsons, williams lawyers said, the barsons are at fault for failing to use the seat belts. but the barson's lawyers disagrees. >> the black box shows that mr. and mrs. barson was wearing their seat belts. the vehicle was a 2016 hyundai, a year old, in perfect working

order. >> reporter: also telling nbc news, he has newly uncovered information from the data recorder in venus' suv, that he says contradicts her claims. >> what was most surprising was the fact that ms. williams' vehicle was not going five miles per hour as she has claimed but was going nearly 20 miles per hour. the initial police report says williams was at fault. but after police found surveillance video of the accident, they said williams lawfully entered an intersection near her home but got stuck when a car turned in front of her. when she started moving again, the car driven by linda barson, entered the intintersection ando collided. >> ms. williams delayed enter the intex. >> reporter: they are investigating the black box
