and our third breaking news story right here. "the wall street journal" reporting there's now a grand jury investigation into russia's interference in the 2016 election. special counsel robert mueller called the grand jury in washington, d.c. we're working to get more information on all these breaking stories and we'll update you with them over the next few hours here on nbc 10 news. our 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with a deadly crash that involves a sheriffs deputy. police tell nbc 10 officers were not pursuing the other people at the time of the crash, but witnesses tell us a different story. i'm jim rosenfield. >> and i'm jacqueline london. we first told you about this story as breaking news this morning. aundrea cline-thomas is joining us live with brand new information from police. >> the sheriffs deputy involved in this crash was off duty at the time. >> reporter: just a few blocks away, police were trying to run

the registration on a car being suspicious. that's when the car allegedly took off running the red light at this intersection and crashing into that montgomery county sheriffs deputy who was on his way to work. this is the aftermath of the crash at 5:30 this porng. a white hyundai hit the tree on the front lawn at the intersection of hamilton and main street. a black chevy suburban driven by an off duty sheriffs deputy had significant front end damage. >> it was like it interlocked and spun together. it spun about four times in the intersection. >> stays angelo was at work and saw the accident unfold. she first ran to the suv. >> i asked if you were a. cop. i saw he said he was a sheriff. he told me to call 911. >> reporter: police were not far behind. s surveillance video shows one man from the car trying to run but

collapsing near a fountain. police were there and put him in hand cups. in all five people were in the car. one person died. >> i was really confused. i thought i was dreaming. and when i saw it, everybody just told me what happened. >> crime scene investigators had tow trucks put together the two cars to recreate the moment of impact. detectives took pictures and also recovered a safe and other evidence from the white car. stacey angelo is back at work still startled by what happened. >> for an hour afterwards, i was shaking. it was so real. >> now the district attorney again denies that there was a police chase. they also say it's too early to say if charges will be filed. as for that sheriffs deputy, he was treated and released from the hospital. reporting live, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. nbc 10 first alert weather tracking some afternoon thunderstorms for parts of our

area. >> not everyone is going to see the rain, which is why weather is is so important here. let's take a loif look at the stadium where the blue rocks are set to take the field later this evening. fans might want to bring rain gear just in case. meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has more on the threat for thunderstorms and who's likely to see them. >> a whole lot quieter at this time today than it was yesterday. this is part of the evidence in easton. so some showers are developing across the area. it's pretty late in the day already. so there's going to be a a limited amount. we also have a few build ups around the philadelphia area. and some of those have formed into thunderstorms. the main cluster is in delaware. started off in sussex county and now is right on the edge of hitting dover. i'm sure there's lightning in the area already. it looks like the storm has missed the beaches and will probably miss the enginejersey

beaches because it's moving to the northeast. we have one that developed in northeast philly. and that should hit newtown in a few minutes. lawrence at 4:45. you can see that much of the area is rain free. right now temperatures are in the 80s just about everywhere. 87 in philadelphia. look how warm that ocean is. it's 78 degrees. we'll talk more about where the storms are headed, if there are anymore before the weekend and what the weekend is going to look like, coming up. busy news afternoon.

kruk must stop on the dunes. they lowered earlier today to get a better look at the mess that's left behind. the storm last week left water. trapped behind the dunes creating a big mess. ted greenberg is live at old city hall at margate where residents are breathing a sigh of relief. >> city commissioners are holding a meeting right now. this is a contentious issue. many people upset about it. and there's so many people here for this meeting they can't all fit inside. they see people out here listening on speakers in the parking lot. this comes a couple hours after a judge handed margate a victory. hopes today that the work will be halted before it gets there. >> just stop right where they are at.

done. fix it. put all the sand back. >> the bottom line is that something went really bad here. >> a court judge siding with margate this afternoon. ordering the project to temporarily. stop for at least the next eight days. city officials insist the project and resulting drainage issues that created large ponds of bacteria can-filled standing water between dunes and street ends is have caused margate irreparable harm. >> it's the right decision, in my opinion. we just can't allow this to continue. >> margate fought to block the project predicting serious drainage problems like this would occur. >> it was close to 100-year rain event. a lawyer argued it was unusually heavy but also said sand basins at the foot of downs were dug too close to the ground. water level. the judge telling the dep u.s.

army core of engineers project contractor and city officials tom to come up with a meaningful plan to resolve the drainage problems. >> we have a week. let's sit the table and see if we can work it out. >> reporter: the state and army core of engineers not making any comment on today's decision. the judge said to report back to him for another hearing one week tr tomorrow. a city commissioner says he expects the construction on the beach to stop atdx) the end of current shift later this evening. live in margate, ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. still two blocks of beach are off limits this afternoon. sky force 10 was overhead as it worked to flatten out the sand. they created a cliff. officials thought it was dangerous enough to make rep repairs.

word in of two arrests in the murder of a woman on her family's blueberry farm. she was shot and killed in winslow township in late june. a 20-year-old and 17-year-old are charged in that killing. police say the two killed her and burglarized the home. today we are hearing the foul mouthed phone call that led to the demise of anthony scaramucci. >> the reporter and scaramucci lets loose on reince priebus. >> reince priebus is a paranoid schizophrenic, and what he's going to do, oh bill shine is coming in and let me leak the [ bleep ] thing. >> scaramucci was ousted as white house communications director on monday. less than two weeks after being named to that position. he said while the conversation may have been legally on the record, it was off the record in

spirit. back here in our area, a slow go along the boulevard this afternoon. this is why. sky force 10 over this crash. it was around 1:00 this afternoon. several cars involved here including that pair of mini vans you see. two people taken to the hospi l hospital. in decision 2017 today philadelphia's mayor threw his support behind a democrat in the district attorney race. the mayor said he's a long-time advocate for the homeless and. those powerless to defend themselves. he's worked for a a defense attorney for several decades. >> especially grateful for his endorsement because of his well known and long standing support of other movements for fair nne. fairness to immigrants, to the lgbtq community, to the poor, and to people of cloolor. >> he says he's been meeting with district attorneys from

around the country about the obstacles they face in their city. he will go up against beth grossman in the november 7th election. new details in the murder of a man on the main line. the reward in the case jumped to $7500 today. police identified derek rollins as a suspect in the murder. they bloef he shot and killed john lee as lee left a pizza shop. they also think he fired 20 shots a the people in philadelphia's overbrook section. a major drug ring is now out of business in berks county. yesterday detectives arrested 26 people in berks county. there are arrest warrants out for an additional 13 suspects. they launched the investigation in february. troopers say he was linked to significant drug operations that stretched from l.a. it puerto rico.

when a judge ruled her text telling her boyfriend to get back in a truck filled with toxic gas caused his death. we have learned new e details in the past hour about a train derailment that forced a thousand people in pennsylvania to sleep in hotels. the train derailed yesterday morning in a small town neighborhood in bedford county. 32 rail cars went off the tracks and some contained hazardous materials. the fire is still burning. crews say it's safer to let it burn itself out. residents within a mile from the crash site were forced to evacuate their homes. >> someone spray painted blue streaks on the homes of two council members in delaware. the homes of new castle president were stray painted after they voting for a parking ordinance on monday. it calls for adding more parking in the quaint town, which some neighbors are against. there's a new call this afternoon for allentown's indicted mayor to resign. it comes from the city council

president ray o'connell. e he also announce d his candidacy as a write-in candidate for the mayoral election in november. current mayor ed pawlowski was indicted on corruption charges. prosecutors allege he took campaign bribes in exchange for dolling out city contracts. he's pledged to win his battle in court and win reelection in november despite the calls for him to step down. >> this city cannot continue to function with the current mayor. the city will not move forward until the residents provided the mayor with integrity, trustworthiness and above all leads an administration with transparency. >> we're getting you ready for the first eagles preseason game here on nbc 10. >> seven more days before the birds take on the packers at historic lambeau field in green bay. you can watch that here on nbc

>> the question is are they going to dodge any storms? here's the man who can tell us. >> there are storms from delaware that are headed into parts of new jersey. so we're going to take a closer look at them in just a minute. we do have warm and humid conditions. it's not nearly as moist around here as was yesterday. not as much instability. so most places are seeing a fair amount of sunshine. temperatures in the 80s and just a few showers around. now we had some development in southern delaware earlier. you can see it's moved to the northeast. now just the edge of this could potentially graze atlantic city. but it will be more in the form of high clouds that the actual storms are going to be headed into cumberland county. 6:26 in washington. now if it continues moving at that rate, we're seeing some

lightning but not near ly as muh as what we saw yesterday. this storm as gone over dover, there's a bit more to go through. there's not a a lot of lightning with it. there's not a lot of lightning with this one either. it started in northeast philly. it's now into lower bucks. it's not all that well organized. this is headed right at trenton. now the wider view shows we have more activity in central pennsylvania and back by chicago. waer not done with the rain threat between now and the weekend. but nothing like yesterday.

a few showers and thunderstorms by 7:00. not a whole lot around. then it's gone later on this evening. we're going to start with lots of sunshine. here we are in the afternoon. we're not seeing anything. but there comes the cold front that's going to give us that beautiful weekend. but early saturday morning, we could get a few showers and then that moves out and here comes the sunshine and the rest of the weekend is looking great. now here's the neighborhood weather for tomorrow. some places with thunderstorms and some without. in the philadelphia area, i don't have any thunderstorms in. near 90 degrees, and the suburbs only parts of that i would expect thunderstorms. lehigh valley, much better chances of thunderstorms

take a look as several people go running from a gun battle in mississippi. a gunman comes into frame dressed in black. you saw him firing away. and e we see that other guy with a gun. he's shooting at the suv and drives off. no one was hurt here, but police did arrest one person. a popular summer spot here with the scene of a freak accident. >> a woman was floating on a tube. someone jumped from a bridge 25 feet above and landed right on top of her. it happened sunday along the boise river in idaho.

welcome back. tracking a chance of thunderstorms tonight. look at this video. you see the dark storm clouds from sky force 10 flying around the region. the sun streaking through the clouds. >> earlier today the sun was shining down the shore. let's get to glenn "hurricane" schwartz, who is tracking the storms out there right now. >> they had that sunshine in atlantic city earlier, but you can see the clouds have come over the area.

based on that thunderstorm across the bay. be the motion is towards the northeast. this is the edge of the storm. right directly. there might be a little bit of lightning. there's not a lot associated with this. l it's issued in parts of delaware right there. you can see the heavy rain and that area does have the flash flood warning and that is until 8:15 p.m. these storms are not moving very fast. other storms in northeast philly.

that's a good sign. we have had enough rain lately. just some isolated to scattered storms over the next few hours. things will quiet down. we're left with a pretty nice evening across much of the area. dover down to 70 with that thunderstor thunderstorm. but the rest of the area mostly in the 80s. what we're going to see is dry conditions. might have a thunderstorm in isolated places, but it's not going to be especially wet day tomorrow either. more on the timing of tomorrow's storms and the wbd coming up. >> high and dry, bridal gowns from alfred angelo are left at the altar for good. >> we told you about this story last night. the retailer announcing no more dress orders will be filled, shipped or accommodated. cydney long has more.

firefighters used a ladder to reach the balcony and used a chain saw to remove the railing and bring the man to safety. in cumberland county, general mills is shutting down their soup plant. they confirmed yesterday was the plant's last day. 370 e employees out of work. they are providing severance and benefits to all affected employees. the vineland plant has been making soup since 2001. it's all about celebrating difference and inclusion today. the school district held their special olympics. it joins people with and without disabilities on the same team. it was inspired by the simple principle that working together provides a quick path to friendship and understanding. delaware is a party hot spot. the university of delaware is ranked number six in the latest review list of top party schools in the country. >> just a few years ago, you barely made it into the top 20.

they rank number one. they surveyed college students to make up that list. young wizard campers competed on the magical grounds in doylestown. it's part of the harry potter sumper camp. they were between 7 and 12 years old. a great idea. hard to imagine anyone not wanting an extra week of vacation. >> that's what so some companies in sweden are offering employees. but you have to exercise. certain companies are offering the additional week of vacation to those who work outside of work three hours every week. the initiative is to prevent stress-related health problems. back in 2016 sweden introduced a six-hour workday. >> you have extra time to go work out. >> we need to move.

new vid e owe highlighting the dangers of not wearing a seat belt in the backseat of a car. that car going 35 miles per hour. the unbuckled rear seat passenger hits the back of seat and pushes the driver into the steering wheel. now only 29 states and d.c. require backseat safety belt use. delaware is one of them. delaware law requires drivers in all passengers including those many in the backseat to wear a seat belt. an officer can pull over a driver. if e he sees anyone in the car not wearing one.

as for new jersey, drivers and passengers have to wear seat belts, but the law is so-called secondary for people in the backseat. that means rear seat passengers can be ticketed but only if the driver is pulled over for another offense. the insurance institute for highway safety releelsed the video and found drivers are twice as likely to be killed when they are in an unbuckled rear seat. the passenger back there comes flying forward. >> when you don't buckle up in the back t puts not only yourself at risk u but other people in the vehicle at risk. >> the survey of 1200 people found many of us do not buckle up in the backseat because we feel safer back there. >> philadelphia's music walk of fame is making room tr one

yesterday. some places are getting heavy rain right now, though. it's not dry everywhere. 8 degrees. so far dry in much of philadelphia. but northeast philly is e seeing some rain already. temperatures in the 80s where it's not raining with the fair weather clouds. and the ocean temperature is 78 degrees. we got a nice sea breeze here. it's 78 in ocean city. 76 in cape may. 7 in stone harbor. this tea breeze may help keep those storms, the inland storms inland. at least for awhile. later on that may be a a different story. you can see the storms are moving up toward philadelphia. now it's just building north ward. it's not really moving. it's redeveloping.

we have heavy rain in dover. and you can see the radar estimates. this is just in the last few hours. this is north of milford. the beach having a little less. than that one spot with the 3 inches. you can see showers developing in save county as well. the northeast philly shower has gone into lower bucks. has developed into a. let's see where that thunder is right now. trenton has gotten some rain, but nothing as what's going on near bristol at the moment. again the storms are not moving that much. so you can get some heavy rain. by 7:30 we'll see that stuff from delaware come up through the philadelphia area. keep can the rain gear with you. not necessarily going to be

seeing rain for hours on end, but you have a chance of e seeing a shower or storm. nothing later tonight or tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon it's mostly just north and west. that's what we have in our neighborhood forecast. now this area comes through friday night and into early saturday morning. that's our early saturday shower that you'll see in the forecast at the bottom of the sdrecreen. isolated storms tonight. you can see that that knocks the temperatures down. and as we go into tomorrow, it starts off dry during the afternoon. and only isolated thunderstorms tomorrow. then a pretty nice weekend once you dwet through early saturday morning. they are some of the best in the world and playing at a national competition right in delaware county. next at 4:00, we'll take you behind the scenes of rehearsals
