right now at 6:00, a speeding car crashes into a sheriffs deputy leaving one person dead. a witness tells nbc 10 other officers had been chasing that car. prosecutors insist police were not pursuing at the moment of the crash. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> and i'm jim rosenfield. s sped away minutes before the crash. let's go live who is sorting this investigation out tonight. what have you found out? >> five people were this that car that allegedly fled. one of them died. prosecutors say that car ran a red light at this intersection and crashed into a sheriffs deputy who was on his way to work. >> it was involved. >> reporter: the sound of crumbling cars and mangled metal. >> i was really confused. i thought i was dreaming. >> but stacey angelo was already up. >> there was that inner lock and

they spun together. they spun about four times in the intersection. >> was the suv and car separated into a tree in the front lawn of a real estate business. five people were in the car. one was dead. the grill of the black suburban was falling off. it was driven by an all student sheriffs deputy. >> he was a a sheriff and told me to call 911. >> police were not far behind. video shows officers handcuffing a man who collapsed after witnesses say he tried running from the car. minutes before the crash, they tried getting the registration on the car, a response about suspicious activity. >> i heard the sirens. >> the driver of the white car down hamilton street and ran a red light and crashed into the deputy's suv as he was on his way to work. >> i was shake.

it was so real. it was something that you just don't see every day. >> this intersection here was shut down for more than eight hours. detectives ripped through that white car. even recover iing a safe and otr evidence. but so far no charges had been filed. the surviving men in the car and the deputy were taken to the hospital for treatment. reporting live in norristown, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. to our first alert weather now. tracking a storm threat. a live look at radar shows some action brewing out there.

>> the water is up past her ankles. >> let's bring in meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz who is tracking these storms tonight. >> just like yesterday, some of these storms are not moving. that is creating that flood threat. we're also seeing some storms come into the philadelphia area. some storms in delaware that have been hanging in there. the jersey shore not nearly as bad. this has been trouble because it hasn't moved much. it's right along the delaware river and just across the river into new jersey, brils is right on the edge of this. that's some pretty heavy rain. and again it has not been moving very much. this area is not moving much either. it's right over dover. we're seeing some of that storm just sit right in the same spot over and over and over again. and now we also have some cells up approaching the philadelphia

area in chester county. this is the strongest cell now. it's just south of westchester over birmingham near concorde. these are relatively small compared to yesterday. the track of that takes it to 6:30. if it moves along that track. now we're talking about that same storm that's nearly stationary near bristol along the delaware river. that's pretty large hail indicated by radar. some hail had been reported along with this area. along with the flooding. the picture that you just saw about 3.5 inches of rain. that's just in the last couple of hours. of course, that's why we have the flooding there. we'll continue to monitor the radar and see the forecast through the weekend coming up. and sky force 10 just captured several lightning strikes.

charges against a 20-year-old and 17-year-old. police say they shot and killed a woman during a burglary inside her house. also in south jersey, a man with a meat cleaver who was shot by police is now charged with making terrorist threats. the camden county prosecutors office says he was threatening two women with the cleaver. it happened wednesday where he lives in the bureau. police say they shot him when he refused to. drop the knife. a philadelphia daycare center involved in a sexual assault investigation is now shut down. today the department of human services shut down the sprouts childrens center. they sent the staff home and alerted parents to find another daycare for their kids. duncan round is charged with sexually assault iing five children. he's the oeb owner of the daycare. he posted bail this morning. there's a new call for allentown's recently indict ed

mayor to resign. it comes from the city council president. he also announced his candidacy as a write-in candidate for the mayoral election. in november. current mayor was indict ed and to win reelection in november despite calls for him to step down. a temporary win for margate. a judge ordered a government sand dune construction project shut down for at least a week. many say the project is rounding beaches in the town that's caused margate harm. today the judge ordered all sides to work out a remedial plan after the project created huge ponds of bacteria-failled water and blocked off access to the beach. >> it's the right decision, in my opinion. we just can't allow this to continue. >> even before the start of the project, margate fought to block it, but lost. officials worried serious drainage problems would happen.

we have new information about an incident in brook haven. we found out someone was stealing a blower from a landscaper. they saw the thief trying to drive away and hopped right on top of that getaway. car. the driver slammed on the brakes and that sent the landscaper flying. he's going to be okay. still no word on where that driver is. it's been six months since the prison riot in delaware, a corrections officer was killed. others held hostage. tonight the state is struggling to find officers willing to

teenage take on that dangerous job. >> tim furlong shows us awe new program to get new officers inside the prison walls. it's all new at 6:00. >> six months after a the deadly uprising at correctional facility, we know the starting salary for officers will go up from 35,000 a year to 40 and it will be 43,000 by the time this year. and here in delaware, a new program will allow future officers to get a leg up. >> it helps you get the professional knowledge and development and foundation. >> reporter: the program will give future officers a head start in the way to an associates degree. a foot in the door. >> the department of correction, you get a preferential hiring status when you apply to work for them for a a correctional officer. no new information about the investigation into the uprising

beaches in pretty good shape. the lehigh valley and poconos in good shape. we have some storms scattered around this one has moved up from delaware now into parts of chester and delaware counties. this one is moving in the general direction of rader in. that red indicating a couple inches per. this is the storm that's been the most troubled today. this is near bensalem going across into new jersey. and it has just been pounding rain. and some flooding rains as a result. this is estimated rainfall. we have two areas of really heavy rain. that area i just showed you right near the delaware river,

3 1/2 inches of rain getting close to 4. florence has had some hail reported as well. this is the latest indication of hail. so this is the area that's gotten hit the hardest during the day today. other areas through delaware. dover has had quite a bit of rain as well. so the rain knocked temperatures down into the 70s. we got up to 8 in philadelphia today. storms diminish as the sun starts to go. we're dry later tonight, dry tomorrow morning. a pretty nice day, although it's kind of hot and humid. and if they are going to be any showers or storms tomorrow afternoon, that would be up to the north and west. really not much. so friday is going to be a whole lot drier than today.
