>> we have brad paisley out on the plaza. >> the bad news? >> i want to show you this picture. this is the top of our building looking south. >> oh, no. >> that's the sky, headed in our direction. >> we're going to stiff-arm that storm. brad needs to play. >> hopefully that will pass through. let's get to a busy friday morning. we start with the new phase in the investigation of possible collusion between the trump campaign and russia. according to reports, special counsel robert mueller is use begb using a grand jury. kristen welker, get us started. >> reporter: the president and his legal team are defiant as the russia investigation intensifies. the message from the president's lawyers, there's no indication the president himself is under investigation. still, news of a grand jury is a sign this probe isn't going away anytime soon.

this morning, a striking new sign. the special counsel investigation into russia election meddling is entering a new phase. robert mueller is looking at a grand jury. >> we didn't win because of russia. we won because of you. >> reporter: just hours later, president trump came out swinging against the probe, in a campaign-style rally in deep red west virginia. >> the russia story is a total fabrication. it's just an excuse for the greatest loss in the history of american politics. most people know, there were no russians in our campaign. are there any russians here tonight? any russians? >> reporter: even taking fresh aim at his former rival. >> what the prosecutor should be looking at are hillary clinton's 33,000 deleted e-mails.

>> reporter: nbc news has not independently confirmed the existence of the grand jury. president trump's point person on russia said his legal team hasn't been made aware of a grand jury. stressing the white house favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of mueller's work fairly. and with congress with two bipartisan bills from firing mueller, he offered this reassuran reassurance. >> the president is not thinking of firing bob mueller. the speculation is incorrect. >> reporter: grand juries are powerful tools for prosecutors. they can stretch out for months and even years. a former senior intelligence official with knowledge of the discussions says mueller is looking at whether the president may have obstructed justice. sources say that may include financial links to russia, something that trump has repeatedly denied. in west virginia, dismissing the

whole thing as politics as usual. >> democrat lawmakers will have to decide. they can continue their obsession with the russian hoax. or they can serve the interests of the american people. >> reporter: this morning, the president trying to keep the focus away from russia and on his agenda. tweeting this morning, west virginia was incredible last night. crowds and enthusiasm were beyond. gdp at 3%. dem govern became -- a big victory for the gop. meanwhile, mr. trump will leave washington behind when he heads to his report in new jersey for more than two weeks. matt? hoda? >> kristen, thank you very much. the white house is dealing with fallout this morning over leaked transcripts of president trump's private phone calls with other world leaders.

correspondent peter alexander has more on that. >> reporter: good morning. these calls are revealing, highlighting at times, tense exchanges between the president and the leaders of two of america's biggest allies. australia and mexico. the white house says these types of leak s undermine the president's ability to do his job and negotiate with gorforei leaders. president trump at that west virginia praising his presidency. >> day after day, we're keeping the promises we made during the campaign. >> reporter: and pledging to build that wall with mexico. >> in order to stop the drugs, gangs and traffickers, we're building a wall on the southern border. >> reporter: but a transcript of the president's private call in january with the president of mexico, showed mr. trump taking a different tone on the wall. in the first of two classified conversations obtained by "the washington post," that have not been authenticated, the

president admits he's cornered. i have to have mexico pay for the wall. i have to. i've been talking about it for a two-year period. conceding the money will come elsewhere, president trump urges mexico to not say they're footing the bill. and on the influx of drugs into the u.s., this assessment -- i won new hampshire because new hampshire is a drug-infested den. according to the transcripts, another contentious call the next day with australia's prime minister. the two clashing over refugees. this is going to kill me. i'm the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country. on refugee security concerns, i guarantee you they are bad. they're not going to be wonderful people who go on to work for the milk people. and before abruptly ending the call, president trump vents, i've had it. this is the most unpleasant call

all day. putin was a pleasant call. this is ridiculous. the white house not confirming the authenticity of the transcripts. but taking aim at the leakers. >> these people should be fired. they're disloyal to our government. >> reporter: that was bob corker. national security veterans say they're stunned by the leaked transcripts. they've never seen something like this. and the president's critics say leaks like this can have a chilling effect on the private conversations between the president and foreign leaders. today, we expect to hear from the attorney general, jeff sessions, who is going to address the dramatic rise on the release of the unauthorized disclosures of classified and confident information. and what the justice department is planning to do to respond. >> peter alexander, thank you very much. nicolle wallace, is here,

ari melburn. clear up confusion. has robert mueller empaneled a special grand jury. or is he using an existing gr id jury to hand down subpoenas? what's the importance of this? >> he's using a grand jury in washington. there's probably crimes he thinks occurred by people in washington or in washington. it doesn't mean he will solve them. and this is picking up what you elude to, other grand jury that were looking at potential financial crimes. >> you say it means he thinks there are crimes that have been committed. is that necessarily true? isn't empaneling a grand jury a necessary and typical part of any investigation, just to find evidence to see if a crime has been committed? >> yes. it means that somewhere along the line they think a crime has occurred. say it's by a foreign hacker and against someone in washington.

it doesn't mean this results in bad news for the white house. but we wouldn't be at this stage, if there wasn't some underlying felony. >> that's the legal headline. taketous the political headline. >> i worked at a white house that was under investigation for leaking valley plame's name. the political analysis was we were in deep doo doo. this is not a good development. a grand jury being empaneled never is followed by good developments for a white house under scrutiny. >> could the grand jury subpoena the president's tax returns? >> the grand jury can review any evidence it needs. if mueller wants the tax returns is to ask a court to do a secret order, so that there wouldn't be risk of leaking, something you're covering this morning, that would be in front of the 12 to 23 grand jurors. >> the first rally given, under

dubai. the massive fire starting on the 63rd floor of the 86-story apartment building. its name, torch tower. the fire broke out around 1:00 a.m., of the 1,100-foot skyscrap skyscraper. as residents began running for their lives, burning debris could be seen crashing to the ground. firefighters battling the blaze. this is the same tower that was devastated in 2013. the building's cladding, made of aluminum panels with combustible cores helped accelerate the flames. that cladding, similar in a material used in the grenfell tower in west london, and blamed for that blaze in june. as officials investigate how the

massive skyscraper caught fire, not once, but twice, residents are grateful to have gotten out alive. and this morning, the dubai media office says firefighters from four stations helped all of the residents evacuate. no one from the building or on the ground was hurt. that cladding has been banned for new builds in dubai. older buildings like the torch tower, are supposed to replace it. >> that could have been so much worse. there is no reaction to the prison sentence given to the massachusetts woman convicted of involuntary manslaughter for using text messages to urge her boyfriend to take his only life. nbc's morgan radford has the latest there. good morning, morgan. >> reporter: hoda, this morning, michelle carter wakes up a free woman as her case goes through the appeals process. some members of the victim's family says the 15-month mandatory prison sentence she

received yesterday was too light. but the prosecutors who fought to put her behind bars say they are happy and this is justice. this morning, outrage over the sentencing of michelle carter. the 20-year-old given a 2 1/2-year term for involuntary manslaughter, after urging her girlfriend, conrad roy, to commit suicide. but much of her sentence will be suspend suspended, ordered to serve just 15 months in prison. she remains free, pending an appeal. state prosecutors say justice has been served. are you happy? is there anything you would have done differently? >> no. michelle carter was convicted for the death of conrad roy. we are thankful for the ruling. >> reporter: some members of the victim's family were furious. you wanted to see her -- >> in cuffs. she's going to the prom. going to disney world. i don't think there's justice. >> reporter: the judge explained, at the time of the

crime, carter was 167 and capable of rehabilitation. >> children before the court charged with crimes are to be treated as children. >> reporter: the ruling, capping a day where emotions ran high, as family members took the stand. >> not a day goes by without him being my first thought waking up and my last thought going to bed. >> reporter: court documents saw carter, via text message, was encouraging him to take his own life. she wrote, you just need to do it, conrad. on july 13th, 2013, roy sat in this parking lot and filled his grandfather's pickup truck with kr carbon monoxide. >> probation is appropriate. >> the state says this is not

about suicide. >> at this very clearly was involuntary manslaughter. and she did make him kill himself. >> conrad roy was a victim of a homicide. he was not a suicide. >> reporter: massachusetts still does not currently have a law against encouraging someone else to commit suicide. but roy's mother says she hopes her son's death changes that. matt? hoda? >> all right, morgan. thank you so much for that. let's do some recapping here. we said we have a lot of people on the plaza for a concert. we showed some images to our south. look at that shot to our south. >> lightning striking. zm >> because of all that, we asked the folks on the plaza who came for the concert, to clear out. it's first time we've had to do that. our hope is that they will leave, get into a dry area. >> get into our concourse. >> that's a severe storm. >> as we look at the radar quick

team was not made aware of the grand jury. but celebrating anything that brings a conclusion to that probe fairly. he will have lunch with vice president mike pence before heading to his golf club in new jersey to begin a 17-day vacation. it's trump's first since taking office. everybody in the west wing is being cleared out so the heating and cooling system can be replaced. newly released video shows how close a jet came close to eve disaster, when an engine caught fire on the airport. pilots managed to bring that plane to a stop. crews rushed to put the flames out. 20 people were injured. the national transportation safety board is investigating. one of the biggest stars is in the headlines but not for

music. taylor swift is going to court next week, over her allegations that a deejay touched her inappropriately as they posed for a photo. joe fryer has the latest on that. >> reporter: the civil trial that starts monday, pits taylor swift against david mueller. swift says he groped her and mueller says that's not true. and this morning, court documents are giving us a preview of what's to come at the trial. for taylor swift, this will be a new stage. the 27-year-old pop star is expected to testify in a federal courtroom. the case stems from a 2013 incident. swift says before a concert in denver, she was groped by radio host david mueller while posing for a picture. swift will testify that mueller put his hand under her dress and grabbed her bare behind. she never reported this incident to police. tstation.

the station fired mueller two days later. in 2015, mueller filed a lawsuit against swift and members of her team, claiming they falsely accused him of touching he defended himself in a radio interview last november. >> my hand was never under her skirt. i never grabbed her. >> reporter: swift countersued, claiming assault and battery. according to court documents, swift is certain what mueller did. and she has never been so sure of anything in her life. during the trial, testimony is expected from swift's mother, manager, personal bodyguard and photographer who took a photo capturing the alleged assault. the courthouse is bracing for huge crowds. but 32 seats will be for the public. those granted on a first come/first serve basis. more spectators will be able to

three of four own an iphone. a trend that may be dialing up trouble for an entire generation. >> there is not one single cause, though, when it comes to suicide. so, we need to become educated and knowledgeable about the host of factors in the human condition. >> we're joined by child psychologist, jennifer hartstein. good to see you. what am i supposed to do with this information? >> i think the key here is knowing what's happening and being able to have open dialogues with your kids. they need to see you as a safe refuge. if they see that, they can come to you with this stuff. >> it would be normal for parents to watch this and me to go home andrtoveranalyzing every mood change. and those are part of the teenage years and read between the lines of everything they say. what should we do? what clues should we look for? >> you should slow down. every behavior change is something to note of.
