"nbc 10 news" breaking news. >> breaking news here on nbc 10. darren dalton has died today at the age of 55 after a battle with brans canckansa brain canc. keith jones takes a look at the life and legacy of dutch. >> reporter: on the field, he was strong. >> i'm a philadelphia philly. >> reporter: two bad knees, hollywood good looks, he was one of the most beloved phillies of all time. drafted in 1980, he spent parts of 14 seasons for the phils, making three all-star teams. his finest achievement, the '93 season.

dalton was the face, the voice, and the driving force behind macho row, a team of misfits that captivated the season and captured our hearts. his championship dreams were realized four years later on the florida marlins. but the kansas native's heart remained in philadelphia. he was enshrined on our wall of fame in 2010 and transitioned from baseball to broadcasting, including on comcast sports net. but in 2013, his life changed. >> i couldn't figure out what was going on. i was having trouble explaining baseball. >> reporter: the diagnosis, brain cancer. surgeons removed two tumors, but he refused to make it a solo fight. he started the darren dalton foundation, dedicated to

one man is facing several charges after that spree that spanned across philadelphia and into south jersey. now neighbors are left cleaning up the damage there. drew, walk us through what happened. >> reporter: katie, good evening. he's accused of carjacking an off-du off-duty septa worker, then traveled 100 miles before ending back here under arrest. investigators say a gunpoint carjacking started it all at 4:00 a.m. he's accused of taking off in this gray dodge challenger, crossing over into new jersey. then a 45-minute drive down the atlantic city expressway to the service plaza. police say pitts fueled up and showed his gun to the attendant, claiming to be a police officer. >> i can't imagine what was going through his mind doing all

that this morning. it's crazy. >> reporter: the chase was on, and pitts went over the delaware river again, returning to philadelphia. but getting down the narrow mercy street proved a challenge. you can see the stolen car ended up crashed into another car. neighbors all heard the loud bang. >> they said he ran. >> reporter: officers quickly captured him. the wild scene was scary, but fortunate no one got hurt. >> i'm glad there was no kids or elderly people out here. >> reporter: could have been a lot worse? >> it could have. >> reporter: again, fortunate no injuries here. pitts faces a number of charges, including robbery, weapons violation and impersonating police. >> drew, thanks for that. the s.w.a.t. team swarmed a west philadelphia home after reports of gunfire. police were called to the area after several people reported

hearing gunshots. one witness said she saw a teenager with a gun run into a home. several people were taken out of that home. no word yet if there have been any arrests. we're getting a better idea tonight about what passengers experienced on a turbulent flight from greece to philadelphia. these are the pictures and video from the american airlines flight that arrived yesterday afternoon at philly international. things were tossed into the aisle and baggage compartments were unfastened. the ride lasted five to ten minutes and the turbulence was severe. thee passengers and seven crew members were taken to the hospital for evaluation. and coming up at 11:30 tonight, will severe turbulence on planes become the new norm? we asked that question, because there's a new report that says the rise in turbulence cases could be blamed on mother nature. misare sepolice are searchi

driver who ran over and killed a woman and kept driving. it happened around 3:20 this morning. 53-year-old ann broderick was killed. investigators say she was crossing the street when she was hit. the driver kept going and we did speak to a friend of the victim who did not want her face shown on camera. >> saw her lying on the street dead. somebody left her there like an animal. >> police are looking for a white four-door jeep wrangler that is likely showing front end damage. today, the white house is praising the united nations security council for taking tough actions against north korea. the u.n. security council approved severe economic sanctions against north korea for its missile and nuclear buildup. the sanctions pro-hib it other countries from importing north korean goods. it's estimated the economic fallout is the in the billion dollar range. >> even allies in the region,

like china and japan, south korea, all agreeing with the united states that north korea and its nuclear capabilities must be stopped. >> the white house pledged to clamp down on government leaks that it believes threatened national security. pence for president in 2020? well, not according to the vice president himself. pence denies a "new york times" report that says he's considering a white house run should president trump not be seek re-election. police in montgomery county got the chance to speak to their congressman in person today. people there asked questions about everything, from infrastructure and the future of health care, to the water quality concerns. >> it will continue to be a local and national issue and one we have to spend the money for. we cannot have a situation which you have a big swath of america that can't use the local water. >> congressman boyle said there are several communities across the country whose water was contaminated by foam used by firefighters at nearby military bases. nbc 10 is your official tv station of the philadelphia eagles. more than 36,000 fans packed the stadium for a look at the team. fabs fans had a chance to watch the

sense friday, there have been five shootings in chester. some arrived to hospital by ambulance, others walk into the hospital on their own. the influx of patients forced the hospital to go into a code orange. nurses and doctors who already work at a fast pace, had to move even faster. >> we had -- we got to a situation where we thought we might be overwhelmed and our shift manager instituted a code orange. we had nurses and staff that was able to clear out the e.r. to take care of these critical patients. >> fortunately all of the gunshot victims survived. so far police have not made arrests in any of the shootings. >> >> check out this ball of fire.

it's what first responders saw when they arrived last night to a plane crash in franklin township. it went down in north jersey. the pilot and two passengers survived the crash, but they were rushed to the hospital with injuries. new details in the investigation into the ohio state fair death that happened last month. officials with the ride manufacturer say excessive corrosion on a support beam led to a "catastrophic failure." a teenager was killed after the ride came apart while in use. four people are still in the hospital. the community of tulsa, oklahoma is picking up the pieces after a tornado touched down there. the twister is responsible for more than two dozen injuries. the national weather service confirmed the ef-2 tornado ripped through the city's business district. the storm knocked down power lines, leaving thousands without electricity. these one restaurant was serving customers when it hit.

good evening to you. former phillies catcher darren dalton, one of the key pieces of the 1993 championship team, has passed away from brain cancer. he was diagnosed four years ago. he was cleared in 2015, but late last month, a statement was released that he was struggling in his fight. bill giles said in a statement tonight, darren was a true leader of men. i loved him like he was one of my own. in fact, he called me uncle bill. he's survived by his wife, four children, parents and brother. as for the current phillies, they were in colorado today. this is the seventh losing streak of at least five games of the season. they have two winning streaks of

he was in the headlines sometimes for the wrong reasons. but then a 2013 diagnosis of brain cancer changed his life. it required the removal of two brain tumors. less than a month after surgery, dalton made his first public appearance at citizens bank park and explained when he knew something was wrong. >> there was a couple of appearances that showed up. i couldn't figure out what was going on, and i was having trouble explaining baseball. and having doing it for 20 years of my life, i could experience this. it was a little difficult. >> reporter: that day, the fans who always embraced dutch showered him with a thunder rouse ovation. a similar reaction was felt by all on february 19, 2015, when dalton tweeted this --

rain moving through the ohio valley and tennessee valley, heading across the delaware valley. hour by hour forecast starting just after midnight. we have that rain well on its way by tomorrow morning. at 4:00 a.m., you can see all the greens and oranges and the yellows, telling you we do have heavy downpours moving across our area. we do have a southerly influence, more moisture associated with this slow-moving system moving across the area. by 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, pockets of heavy downpours. this is such a slow-moving system, so my big concern is the potential for flooding. forecasted rainfall totals, over two inches for philadelphia. 2 1/2 inches for wilmington. here's the deal, what is this? right along the i-95 corridor, this is why this is a really big concern for me. we have issued a first alert. so coming up, we'll talk about

that first alert. i'll time this out for you. we'll try to get a better perspective as to why this affects a slow-moving system. katie, back to you. a shop at the jersey shore will reopen tomorrow morning after a fire today. the fire started on the roof of the store. emmoyees and customers dropped everything and rushed out. the manager said there was minimal damage inside the store and no one was hurt. our first look at video from inside the american airlines mean that rumbled through severe turbulence on its way to philadelphia yesterday. tonight, steve patterson looks at whether the number of turbulent flights could be related to climate change. >> reporter: the seat belt signs were on. but that didn't keep 10 of the

nearly 300 people from being injured. severe turbulence rocked the plane just 30 minutes before landing, the shaking so violent, drinkered shattered on the ceiling. >> my thought is, when a plane goes down, this is what it feels like. >> reporter: most of the injured were crew members, up serving drinks during the incident. the wild ride, just the latest example of weather affecting planes. in may, a flight from moscow to bangkok hit clear air, 27 passengers injured. in june, some carried away on stretchers on a flight from panama city to houston. a study says climate change may be part of the reason of the severe turbulence. >> we have a 25% increase how

thousands of people flocked to northern liberty in philadelphia today, for the second street festival. there were dozens of food vendors, nine beer gardens, street performances and bands playing on two stages.

♪ tonight. there was a huge crowd for the outdoor concert. call them the girls of summer. they are one of the best youth baseball teams in the country. but they don't play against other girls. it's the boy's teams they want a crack at. >> reporter: whether batting, catching, or scoring a run, these athletes are some of the best youth baseball players in the nation. and they are all girls. >> i play baseball because it's more challenging than other sports. >> reporter: meet the only girl travel baseball team. they don't play against other girls. they playboys. you've played girls in the past, and what's that like? >> no offense, but it's not really challenging.

i like playing boys because it's challenging. >> reporter: robert started girls travel baseball, gtb, just under two years ago. he says mattie was outplaying many middle schoolers but wasn't getting the same coaching. >> one of the coaches came up to me and said there will never be a girl step on his field and play baseball. >> reporter: the team has grown to about 100 players from the u.s. and canada, competing in tournaments around the country. what sit like competing against boys? >> umm, it's competition. i mean, they can be tough sometimes, but we do what we have to do. >> reporter: but not everyone wants to play ball with girls. plenty of boy teams have backed out after finding out who their opponents were. >> some of the jokes started, hey, if we lose to a girl's team, you're going to be running laps. >> reporter: the girls beat two boy's team this weekend.

this does include the i-95 corridor. i don't want to exclude new castle county, you may see one or two isolated thunderstorms. this is an all-day event. this will be issued through tuesday. we can expect lots of rain. this is a slow moving system. nobody will be excluded. there is the potential for localized flooding and flash flooding. radar and sthatellite imagery, are seeing that rain moving in from the southwest. a wider perspective, however. we do have this area of low pressure that is developing. look at how active it is. and look how wide this system really spans all that rain. so it's going to be slow moving by the time all that rain cheers. i would say after midnight on tuesday. so radar and sthit image again, showing the green moving into our area, just starting to skirt

along the count yis heries here. this flash flood watch is in effect until midnight on tuesday. hour by hour forecast, starting at 12:30, so just after midnight. here we start to see everything moving into our area, 4:30 a.m. already starting to see some yellows here, telling us we have heavier pockets. green means lighter, the orange means a deeper, and the red means heavier downpours. at 10:30 a.m., this is when we see the efblgts along the i-95 corridor. this is an all-day event. not much that's going to be ex-chuded. everything is moving into new england, encompassing this area from the mid-atlantic northward. 4:30 p.m. here, more rain moving through. back here, we see the winds variable.

so keep in mind, it's going to be very active, the rains heavy all day long. finally clearing after midnight. at midnight, we're seeing more rain and the good news is by 4:00 a.m. on tuesday, we start to see an improvement. rainfall totals might not be very impressive, but add that to the rain we've seen in burlington. they had flooding last week, so another two inches does not help that because. under two inches for westchester. wilmington, about 2 1/2 inches, all along the i-95 corridor. when you are traveling for your amp and evening commute, you are going to have an issue there. dover, about an inch. and millville, over an inch of rain in total when it's all said and done. so this is a neighborhood forecast. your ten-day outlook, heavy rain and flooding on monday. i decreased the temperatures for tomorrow. i had mid 70s. bumped this down to 72 degrees.
