the philippines, a rare display of unity, the u.s. on the same page as china and russia, taking a stand against north korea and its threatening missile lunches. but the rogue nation, not taking it well. lashing out. kim jong-unregime, saying it will launch thousands fold revenge against the united states. at a summit in manila, foreign ministers from 25 nations dressed in local garb, toasting each other at a dinner, all except rex tillerson who was a no-show. aides denied that tillerson was avoiding the envoy of north korea. saying he did not attend to prepare for today's session. at a news conference, tillerson saying what the u.s. must do to

talk. >> the best thing they can do to give us an indication they are prepared to talk is to top the missile launches. >> reporter: the u.s., china and russia are providing a united threat, $1 billion in punishing sanctions against north korea. >> the sanctions will cut deep and will give the north korean leadership, giving them a taste of the devastation they inflict on the north korean people. >> reporter: afterwards tweeting, very happy and impressed with 15-0 united nations vote on north korea sanctions. at the asia summit, china's foreign minister warning north korea's minister they must stop the missile advances. north korea was the top concern in talks with russian minister

lavrov. this is the first meeting since vladimir putin said he is cutting staff from the american embassy in moscow, retaliations for sanctions in russia. tillerson saying how much the hacking has damaged the u.s./russia relationship. >> that has created mistrust between our two countries. and we have to find some way to deal with that. >> reporter: secretary tillerson told the russians that the u.s. would respond to the expulsions by vladimir putin's september 1st deadline. and despite the cliaims of a united front against north korea, they are pressuring the u.s. and russia, instead of propping up kim jong-un's regime. >> thank you. president trump is beginning his first full week of a working vacation, while the white house under goes repairs. but it's vice president mike pence people are talking about, amid a new report he denies,

saying pence is eyeing a 2020 presidential run. peter alexander has more on that. >> reporter: good morning to you. president trump marking the 200th day of his presidency. a little downtime at his golf club, whether permitting. it's a rainy one already today. no public events on the schedule. this does come as vice president mike pence is slamming that "new york times" report that says he is positioning himself for a possible 2020 white house bid. mr. pence calling that report laughable and absurd. settling in for his summer getaway in new jersey, president trump leaving the white house in his wake. the west wing under renovation, the oval office empty. the president insists he's working, tweeting this is not a vacation. meetings and calls. the only public sighting so far, mr. trump in golf attire, greeting guests at his new jersey golf club. and playing wedding crasher in chief. away from washington, the president and his aides can't

escape questions about the russia investigations. including whether the president would try to fire special counsel robert mueller, now working with multiple grand juries. >> he's not even discussed firing bob mueller. >> reporter: the deputy overs overseeing mueller's team, could expand beyond russia interference. rosenstein wouldn't say he had. >> we understand the scope of the investigation. it's not a fishing expedition. >> reporter: the senate taking steps to protect mueller's job. blocking president trump from making appointments while lawmakers are away, as well as a bipartisan bill to shield special counsels from political influence. >> is some of this directed at president trump? >> well, there's no question that it is. >> reporter: still, backing his boss, despite the russia cloud and the president's dwindling

approval rating, mike pence is denouncing a "new york times" art announcing that he is among a handful of republicans who are positioning themselves in 2020 presidential bids, in case mr. trump isn't on the ballot. the v.p. blasting the report as disgraceful and offensive. dismissing the allegations as false. the latest attempt of the media to divide this administration. >> it's the greatest mission of my life to serve as vice president, to a president who is fighting every day to make america great again. >> reporter: kellyanne conway calling a pence shadow campaign fiction. >> it's true that the vice president is getting ready for 2020, as re-election of vice president. >> reporter: president trump tacking the news. lawmakers will find out whether americans think they've been

successful. today is the first town hall of the august recess. >> adamant denials there. peter, thanks to muff. a lot more to get to, including a rare august tornado that devastated parts of tulsa, oklahoma. it ripped through a shopping district early sunday and injured 30 people, causing widespread damage, as well. nbc's katcatie beck is there fo us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the damage here is just unbelievable. so many businesses along the path of this tornado, had their windows broken out. businesses like the one behind me, just destroyed. and witnesses saying this terrifying tornado came with very little warning. this morning, midtown tulsa is in shambles. a rare august tornado, tearing through the heart of this normally bustling shopping area. many buildings and businesses, destroyed. the roof of this home shattered after a tree tore a hole through the living room.

toppled power lines, leaving thousands in the dark. perhaps the saving grace, the twister touched down just after 1:00 in the morning, when most people were home. >> you can see two tables were pushed together right here. >> reporter: the roof of this t.g.i. fridays, collapsed with patrons and employees inside. >> sounded like an explosion going off. >> a family of six, sitting below. trapped beneath the rubble. >> i ran to the screaming, yelling. >> reporter: this police officer said it's a miracle no one died. what was your reaction when you saw daylight and you saw this? >> i knew people were trapped in a restaurant. you have a concept of stuff falling on them. and you see that and you're like, holy cow. >> reporter: the tornado formed so quickly and unexpectedly, it touched down before warni ining sirens had a chance to go off. >> it's there. we didn't have ramp-up time.

>> reporter: tulsa facing the damage that has been done. >> it's a miracle that we can stand here right now and talk about this happened. it's over with. and now, we're moving toward recovery. >> reporter: 24 hours after this twister touched down, officials are surveying the damage here. asking folks to remain out of this area as much as possible. according to the records, this is only the third time in 50 years that a tornado has touched down in tulsa, in the month of august. willie and savannah? >> incredible to see those images behind you. thank you. new developments in the investigation of a weekend bombing at a mosque near minneapolis. the powerful explosion shattered windows and damaged an office. and now, officials are trying to sort out whether or not it was a hate crime. nbc's blake mccoy has the latest. blake, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the fbi is now involved, trying to figure out who set off a bomb at the mosque over the weekend. minnesota's governor is calling ate an act of terrorism that

will not be tolerated. broken glass and scattered debris at a bloomington, minnesota, mosque. this morning, the fbi trying to figure out who, witnesses say, tossed an explosive device flu a window, into the office of the imam. minnesota's governor visiting the islamic center sunday. also on-hand, representative keith ellison, the only muslim member of congress, who represents minnesota's large muslim somali population. >> i wish i could tell you this is an isolated thing. but we've soon an uptick in anti-muslim hate crimes. >> reporter: there were people in the building when the blast happened sunday morning. but no one was hurt. >> if you changed the circumstances just a little bit, it could have resulted in death or serious bodily injury. the imam, says he couwould have been in his office at the time of the explosion, but

thankfully, was running late. >> it looks like hate crime. some person hate muslims in general because i don't have specific problem with anybody. >> reporter: federal agents have collected fragments from the bomb in hopes of tracing its orig origin. investigating an act of hate as this community responds with a message of solidarity. >> we've seen outpour of love. we have seen cries for tolera e tolerance. >> the attack on a synagogue is an attack on a church, it's an attack on all faith communities. >> reporter: a $24,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. and the executive director here says he saw a pickup truck take off immediately after the bombing. but no suspect description has been given. guys? >> thank goodness no one was hurt in that explosion. blake, thanks so much. now, to a terrifying flight for hundreds of airlines

passengers. people were injured when an american airlines jet tran into extreme turbulence on the way to philadelphia. a new video out shows what it's like at those moments. here's gabe gutierrez. >> this is your captain. we apologize for the bumpyness. >> reporter: a terrifying moment for passengers. the captain apologizing for unexpected severe turbulence that shook passengers and crew. flight 759, from athens to philadelphia, rocked by severe, unexpected turbulence over the atlantic, just 30 minutes before landing. the winds shaking the plane so violently, ten people were injured in the chaos. >> there was more than a second or two that i did think that the plane might go down. and the thought in my mind, when a plane goes down this, is what it feels like. >> reporter: the seat belt sign was on. but attendants were serving

drinks. moments later, people are seen cleaning up the cabin that is littered with debris. in all, seven crew members and three passengers were hospitalized, taken by first responders after the plane landon on saturday. >> with you on final for 27 right. >> runway 27 right, good to land. >> reporter: while american airlines didn't provide details about the severity of the incident, the airline said, in part, we're taking care of our passengers and our crew members at this time. and want to thank our team members for keeping our passengers safe. in 2016, there were 44 injuries reported due to turbulence on domestic ligflights. in june, passengers were carried away on stretchers. in may, severe turbulence leaving blood and debris in the cabin. saturday's incident, the latest passenger plane to be rocked by

unexpected extreme weather. for "today," gabe gutierrez, nbc news. two boy scouts were killed, another hospitalized, after their sailboat hit a power line. they were riding in a catamaran when it collided with a transmission line. a 16-year-old and 18-year-old were found in the water. official says they were likely electrocuted. an 11-year-old boy was taken to the hospital. his condition is unknown. a manhunt under way for an escaped inmate in ohio. brandon powell overpowered a sheriff's deputy on friday, after the two were leaving a psychiatric hospital. they were heading back to the jail, when investigators say powell grabbed the deputy's gun, calved him to the wheel of his squad car and ran. authorities say powell is armed and dangerous. the fbi has joined in the search. an arizona man is sharing

his story of survival. he was in the wilderness for two days in triple-digit temperatures after his car broke down. he documented the frightening experience with his cell phone's camera. >> hi. this is nick omen. if you find this phone and i didn't do so well, please -- please tell my sisters how much i love them. >> it all started when he decided to take the scenic route back to his phoenix home. but the road was more of a rugged trail, filled with boulders. he was strand eed 16 miles from the nearest town with no cell phone reception. he was left with one battle of water and two beers. after two days under blazing sun, he came across a man on a dirt back. he hopped on the back and is

thankful to be alive. >> in an arizona desert two days. one bottle of water, that's incredible glad he's okay. pespeaking of weather, whato you have on your map? >> we had a lot of rain in new orleans. you can see, it is take over some towns with some areas picking up close to nine inches of rainfall. that's area footage of what that much rain does to some of these towns. certainly an issue down that way. and more rain is possible, as we go through the day today. that could lead to additional flooding, when some of the heavier downpours set up one area over a period of time. most of that rain fell in a few, short hours. it didn't take long for that to happen. most of our rain this morning is through central texas. we have some of the heavier downpours in southwestern louisiana. through the appalachians and the mid-atlantic. that's the area we will see more potential for flooding today. two rounds of storms moving

m manhunt. they're accused of the brutal killing of a chicago hairdresser. wyndham lathem and andrew warren, had been on the run for a week. after the body of 26-year-old trenton cornell was discovered stabbed to death, inside lathem's upscale chicago apartment. a brutal murder. police finding two knives, one with the blade broken off. leaving neighbors shocked and alarmed. >> we wouldn't think it would happen inside the building. >> reporter: the manhunt ended when the two surrendered separately to authorities in the san francisco bay area. chicago police tweeting, both individuals will be held accountable for their actions. and we hope today's arrests bring some small level of closure and justice for trenton cornell's family. lathem, a professor of

microbiology, was an authority on the disease dz known as plague. according to police, lathem sent an apologetic video message to friends and family for his involvement of the murder. police believe lathem and the victim had a personal relationship but have not revealed a motive. his arrest ending a week of anxiety on the northwestern camp campus. >> it was shocking. >> andrew warren who worked in the payroll department in england, came to chicago for the first time just three days before the murder, police say. it's not known whether he had any prior contact with the victim. in a strange twist, police in lake geneva, illinois, say on the day of the murder, a $1,000 donation was made to the town's public library on behalf of the victim. >> the person who made the donation did not want to leave his name. >> reporter: a bizarre turn in a

murder mystery with two unlikely suspects. according to a spoke sperson a northwest university, his job was in research. the u.s. marshal's office says the two will appear in a california court before they are extradited to chicago to face murder charges there. back to you guys. >> that's a strange story. migu miguel, thank you. now, to the sort start of a trial that's getting allot of attention. taylor swift's groping claim against a radio deejay. joe fryer is at the white house in denver for us. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it all begins with jury selection this afternoon. at issue, was taylor swift groped by a former radio deejay before a concert four years ago. this morning, depositions are shining a light on what we can expect to hear from the witnesses. after keeping a low profile for months, taylor swift is emerging

not to sing, but to testify. posing with host david mueller at a meet and greet, swift says he lifted her skirt and grabbed her behind. as soon as he grabbed my behind, i became shocked and withdrawn and was barely able to say thanks for coming, which i what i say to everybody. i was barely able to get the words out. it was like somebody switched the lights off in my personality. swift never reported it to police. but one of the reps told mueller's reporter, kygo radio. managers interviewed mueller and fired him. he sdid not sue the station but he sued swift and his team. he said his contention that mr. mueller lifted up swift's skirt and touched her bottom, while standing with her girlfriend and personnel, during a backstage meet and greet is

nonsense. swift countersued, claiming assault and battery. a member of her security team is expected to testify. during his deposition, he said, before the photo 'cause taken, mueller put his arm around him. he lifted up her skirt. swift reacted and went closer to the girl that was with him. that woman, mueller girlfriend at the time, is also supposed to testify. during her deposition, melcher said, i could not see what was going on behind me. i was unaware of anything that could have gone on. she added, what i know about david mueller from the time we spent together, it is hard for me to believe he would intentionally do something like that to a woman. courthouse security will be tight with limited space expected. spectators must leave their concert gear at home. clothing or buttons with the parties likeness is not allowed.

widespread damage to buildings there. customers and employees were inside when the roof of a t.g.i. fridays collapsed. the tornado hit before most of the stores in that area had opened for business. also this morning, california mother taking disney to court. she claims the entertainment company is making money by tracking children's online activi activity. tammy leitner with the story. >> reporter: this morning, disney is under fire. accused of unlawfully tracking children through online apps, like its princess palace pets game. amanda rushing, a mother in san francisco, claims in a lawsuit, that disney used dozens of apps to collect personal information about kids, without parental consent. according to court documents, the entertainment giant sells

the data to advertisers, violating, the suit claims, a federal law protecting children's online privacy. >> it's a problem with children's apps. in general, we decided that children under 13 shouldn't be subject to this data collection because they're innocent. >> reporter: the suit claims some disney apps use identifiers to track information, such as a child's location and internet habits. information, which could be used to create a valuable profile for advertisers. >> virtually all apps do this data collection. if they're not charges for them, they have to make money somehow. >> reporter: in a statement to nbc news, disney wrote. disney has a robust coppa compliance program and we maintain strict policies for children and families. the complaint is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of coppa principals. and we look forward to defending this action in court.

good to see you all. a few weeks ago, we heard from william and harry about their mother, very movingly. their account of diana. this is diana, in her own words, recorded a few decades ago. and it's more bitter, more painful, and more critical of charles and camilla in particular. it raises difficult questions, guys, of who should be in charge of diana's legacy and how she should be seen. is this what diana should have wanted? >> i had 13 pounds when we got married. >> reporter: in the new documentary, "diana in her own words," the beloved princess, sharing intimate details, about her royal relationship with charles, including their first awkward kiss. >> he started kissing me. this is what people do. and all the rest of the evening, followed me around. a puppy. >> reporter: and her true feelings early on.

and that's taken time to get everything differently. i was rejected. i didn't think i was good enough. i took it on myself. >> reporter: ken wharfe, who worked with diana for many years, says it's the truth. >> what she said on the tapes is exactly she would say anyway, to anybody. >> reporter: but it's the diana story the royal family finds most uncomfortable. the princess describing how she reached out to the queen and got no help. >> i went to the top lady. sobbing. and i said, what do i do? and she said, i don't know what to do. that was help. >> reporter: the man who made the recordings, saying the people who criticized this broadcast, criticized diana when she went public when she was arrive. and channel 4, the tv station that broadcast them, saying, the recordings made in private but the subject matter is a matter of public record. the issue here, is this is history, we're seeing.

>> the earlier you get it, the more effective it is. and everyone will be affected by hpv in their life. >> is it a one-shot deal? or multiple shots? >> it's different on your age. if you're under 15, it's a two-shot series. if you wait until after 15, it's three shots. another reason to do it early. >> if you're a parent of an early teen, get the facts on that. >> i start talking about it at age 11. >> wow. >> you're not thinking about sexual activity at that time. you're thinking about protecting your child against getting cancer. >> flu vaccine. >> everyone should have the flu vaccine every year. they're getting sent to the doctors' offices now. >> since you're here, when you have kids, that are headed off to college. with the kids you've been seeing, you try to have a good talk before college. >> i think it's important for

that's at lunchtime. and the threat continues right on through this afternoon for much of new jersey and delaware. even into the suburbs and philadelphia. we'll see clearing skies this evening. lots of rain and it's why we've issued a first alert. add to it a threat of damaging winds and strong storms coming in late in the day and into the evening hours. less likely to the north. we've got a damp day ahead. it's why we've issued a first alert for heavy rain and flooding for philadelphia, the suburbs, new jersey, and delaware. that's until midnight tonight. the potential for steady rain that will be heavy at times. leading to some flooding and flash flooding is possible. >> thank you. now to the jersey shore. today's rain could possibly cause more flooding at the dune construction project going on in margate. yesterday an nbc10 viewer sent us these photos from the area. a worker was on the beach inspecting the sand there. last week a judge halted work on the dune project after rain created large ponds of standing water between new dunes and the ends of the streets.

margate had to close several beaches because the water contained high levels of bacteria. a hearing on the project is scheduled for friday. and a heads up about a repaving project on the schuylkill expressway that could delays. eastbound and westbound lanes between city avenue and the blue route will be closed overnight this week. the crews should be out of the way by 5:00 a.m. the following day. as always, jessica boyington will keep us updated about the clearing every morning. the work will continue through next sunday morning. another update coming up in 25 minutes.
