a rainy start to the workweek. we could get pounded later today. remembering dutch. a look back at the life of former phillies catcher daulton who lost a brave battle against brain cancer. . it's the split that efrp veryon talking about. what they are saying about a decision to go their separate ways. right now at 11:00, it's a rainy monday throughout our area. people used umbrellas to dodge the rain drops in germantown. keep that umbrella handy as we track rain and a threat for storms throughout the day. a live look at radar showing where the heaviest rain is

falling. that heavy rain could lead to flooding. that is why we have issued a first alert for today. krystal is here. >> what we are looking at the first alert for the heavy rain and flooding through much of our area, starting around philadelphia and the northern air -- just areas north into the pennsylvania suburbs. also through new jersey and delaware where there's the biggest threat of flooding because some of the heaviest rain will go through those areas. we will keep this in effect through midnight. the heaviest rain will taper around sunset. we could see flooding into the nighttime hours are rain that's been moving through and pockets that are heavier that will be leading to flooding and flash flooding. it's the quick flooding when you may get a downpour. some grounds are so saturated that flooding will occur regardless. there's a flash flood warning in place for kent county. this includes right through dover and just south of smyrna.

some of the heaviest rain has moved through. let's look at our radar. i turned off the overlay. we are looking at the rain moving through. pockets of heavier showers are over the suburbs right now. you see the lehigh valley, berks county, getting a break for now. you go south of philadelphia, that's when you get heaviest stuff, that's yellow, orange and red. look right where the flash flood warning is, the reds indicating the stronger rain moving through. that heavy rain will move into salem and cumberland county and then to camden county. this heavy rain is not stopping any time soon. the storm center itself is to our southwest. you can see the stormy weather approaching d.c. will be moving our way next. we will track this out hour by hour and talk more about the better conditions in the days to come in just a bit. >> you can always get instant updates and alerts with the nbc 10 app.

track the storms in real time with our interactive radar to find out exactly when those storms will hit your neighborhood. this morning, we are remembering dutch. darren daulton was one of the most beloved athletes in philadelphia history. he led the phillies to the 1993 world series. he died after a battle with brain cancer. keith jones looks back at dutch's legacy. >> on the field, he was strong. >> i'm a philadelphia philly. >> two bad news, hollywood good lucks, he became one of the most beloved phillies of all time. he spent parts of 14 seasons behind the plate for the phillies, making three all star teams. his finest achievement in philadelphia, the '93 season. he was the face, the voice and the driving force behind macho

row, a team of misfits that captivated the city and captured our hearts. his championship dreams were realized four years later on the florida marlins. the kansas native's heart remained in philadelphia. >> darren daulton. >> he was enshrined on our wall of fame in 2010 and transitioned from baseball to broadcasting, including on comcast sports net. in 2013, his life changed. >> i couldn't figure out what was going on. i was having trouble explaining a little baseball. >> the diagnosis, an aggressive brain cancer. surgeons removed two tumors. he refused to make his fight with cancer a solo fight. he started the darren daulton foundation, dedicated to providing funding to those who suffer from brain injury and brain cancer, all the while

cementing a lasting legacy. >> i never really burnt any bridges. i've always been asked back for dinner. as far as the personal accolades, i was never that type of personality. that's what i'm most proud of. >> yes, on the field he was strong. but off of it, dutch was an inspiration. to his wife and four children, to an entire loyal fan base. keith jones, nbc 10 news. >> few professional athletes have been embraced by philadelphia fans the way he was. this morning people are remembering him for his leadership and toughness. pamela osbourne is live in south philadelphia where the phillies faithful are sharing memories of the man and the player. >> reporter: you are right. we spent our morning speaking with fans. there's no doubt about it, dutch was loved and he is already missed.

>> i was really shocked to see that on the news this morning, matter of fact. and i tell you, the fans all loved him. really loved him. >> reporter: at this diner in south philly, baseball fans spent their morning remembering darren dutch daulton. >> he was a good guy. terrific player. i used to watch him all the time. i lived right near the stadium. we all did, back in the day. >> reporter: he was a three time all star, a member of macho row and a leader in the clubhouse. he helped take the team to the '93 world series giving us the season that feels as fresh as it did back then. >> he put happiness, strength to the team. and everything, it just locks right in. they seen him out there hitting that ball, home run. it's amazing. >> reporter: former teammates

said he never complained about the aches and pains. when he was diagnosed with brain cancer four years ago, he put up a fight but not by himself. dutch created the darren daulton foundation which offered financial support to others battling the disease. last night at 55 years old, he passed away but his legacy lives on both on the field and off. for that, fans say they are forever grateful. >> i'm telling you, he is going to be missed. there's no words to say. >> reporter: from what we hear, dutch would go to the diner quite a bit. when i come back at 11:30, you will hear from one fan who actually met him there. he will explain how he is remembering him today. live in south philly, i'm pamela o osborne, nbc 10 news. >> the phillies released a statement saying, all of us are saddened to hear of darren's passing. from the day we drafted him until today, he constantly

earned our respect and admiration as both a player and person. we will hear more from the phillies as they plan to address the media in ten minutes or so. we will update you on air and online as nbc10.com as soon as that happens. for the second time in less than a month, a group of teens got out of control outsideede r center. a crowd started throwing bottles and rocks at officers. police arrested three people and one officer was hit by a bottle but was not hurt. back on july 17th, a crowd caused problems in the streets around the same rec center. police decided not to arrest anyone during that incident. a man faces a list of charges. he is accused of being behind a crime spree that took him from philadelphia to south jersey and back again. police say he carjacked an off duty septa worker at gun point yesterday morning. they say he then filled up the

stolen car's tank at the farley service plaza. there he showed his gun to the attendant while claiming to be a police officer. he headed back to south philadelphia where he crash and tried to make a run for it. >> i can't even imagine what was going through his mind doing all that. >> officers captured him. no one was hurt but several cars were damaged. in philadelphia, a 13-year-old boy is recovering after being shot. now police are trying to figure out who pulled the trigger. officers found the boy on ontario street with a gun shot wound to his foot. he said someone shot him about a half mile away at kensington avenue. police checked out the intersection. couldn't find any evidence. the boy should be okay. police want to know who ran over and killed a woman in center city and kept on going. police say it happened on ray street early sunday morning. investigators say a 53-year-old woman was crossing the street when she was hit. police are looking for a white

four door jeep wrangler that has front end damage. camden county police are searching for a man accused of hitting a detective with an atv. look at video of the man at a gas station late saturday night. authorities say the detective and another officer saw him tampering with equipment at the station. when they told him to stop, he plowed into the detective with his atv. the rigeder toode didn'rider to jury selection is under way for jerry sandusky. he is facing child sex charges. prosecutors say he asked two underage kids to send him nude pictures and to perform a sex act. he has suspended from his job at a prison in central pennsylvania. his father jerry is serving 60 years in prison after he was convicted for 45 child sex abuse counts.

vice-president mike pence is denying a report he is getting ready to run for president in 2020 if president trump doesn't run. we are learning about the new crackdown on leaking information. who are they really going after? we have a look from washington. >> reporter: while president trump is on a working vacation, his secretary of state is overseas with this message for north korea. >> the best signal that north korea could give us that they are prepared to talk would be to stop the missile launches. >> reporter: "the new york times" reports vice-president pence is kocourting donors, layg the groundwork for his own possible presidential run in 2020. in a statement, pence called that laughable and absurd.

>> zero concern. that's complete fiction. that is complete fabrication. >> reporter: the deputy attorney general says leak investigations will not target journalists. the white house and congress could be fair game. >> we identify somebody no matter what their position. if they violated the law and that warrant prosecution, we will prosecute. including anybody who breaks the law. >> reporter: a top obama official says he is concerned. >> the leaks right now are bad. i have never seen it this bad. there should be a concerted effort to identify and go after leakers. >> reporter: the justice department has promised to triple investigations into government leaks. there are multiple reports this morning that the special counsel in the russia investigation is turning to the white house looking for documents on former national security adviser mike flynn. nbc news, washington.

let's begin with one of our live cameras showing off the rain moving through. i could pincknc pick any camera would be rain on the lens. this is in wilmington. not the heaviest rain. that's south into delaware. look at the weather setup we have. we have the storm center still to our southwest. that is going to bring in the heaviest rain in the afternoon. there's the heaviest rain starting to approach d.c. here is the warm front lining up. when you have a warm front feeding in warmer air, that helps keep a storm going. that's what's going to happen as it moves across the area. we still have many hours of rape ahead in our future. hold tight to that umbrella. a look at our radar and satellite view. what we have the heaviest rain in the southern portions of our viewing area. i suspect this will continue. delaware and south jersey, even the shore, will probably get the brunt of this storm system because of the track of the low moving across our area a little later on into this evening.

let's take a closer look into some of the pockets of heavier rain moving over the suburbs. from west chester to norristown to north hampton, we see rain falling. a little pocket of the heavier rain was just over us. we could really hear it on our roof. just briefly as the pockets move along. a steady rain over philadelphia. we drop into south jersey and along to the shore. from browns mills down to galloway township, yellow, orange, that's a steady to heavy rain. the heaviest is over kent county and moving into salem. it's feeding this direction. more and more of the heavy rain is hitting there. it's why a flash flood warning was posted here. there are embedded thunderstorms popping up. see the lightning bolts? that indicates storms moving through. that typically does dump down even heavier rain. here is a look at the warnings and watches. the areas in green are all under that flash flood watch.

this is through midnight tonight. the red you see, that's slicing through kent county, that's the warning, flooding is starting to occur in these areas or is going to occur with certainty through at least 2:45. i believe more of these warnings will likely pop up as we go throughout today. download the free nbc 10 app. that will give you the live look at radar and it will alert you as soon as the warnings do start to come down. a look at the hour by hour forecast. the afternoon when the heaviest rain moves through. we will keep you posted on that. former teammates are remembering darren daulton. the catcher died last night after a long fight against brain cancer. some of the teammates are speaking out right now at citizens bank park along with the team's former president. >> really struggled with his knees almost from the get go. there was one winter -- i'm not sure i would know exactly what year it was. it may have been the winter of '85.

that darren was here rehabbing his knee. he became part of us. what i mean by us at that time, you would sit and have lunch with the employees in the lunch room and whatnot. the impression i always got was darren was very comfortable in whatever setting he was. i guess i think that the time i spent with him during the last four years, the way in which he approached this challenge was just inspiring and unbelievable. my thoughts as i say remarks, his two primary caregivers were amanda and his mother. they were unbelievable, particularly within this last year. >> i sort of got -- when i played with him and then after

my career was over, say our career as a baseball player was over. i choose to be open the happy side of that. remembering the times in the clubhouse, especially in the training room after games that sometimes we would stay until 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. i was in charge of bringing him sort of a cold refreshment. but i tell you what, i learned more about the game of baseball and how to play the game of baseball from that man during those times in that training room and also on the field. that was the happy times. there was a lot of good times that you wanted to be around the ballpark and wanted to be around him. he was infectious with the way he treated people and the way he went about his business. he taught me how to be a professional and play the game right. he held me accountable. you can't ask for any more than that.

then after the post -- i say my post career stuff, he changed my life. he saved my life. i went through a lot in my life, losing a loved one. i owe him for what i have now. my wife now, he reintroduced me to her. that's the reacquainted to her, because i met her when i was younger. without him, that wouldn't have happened. and i couldn't be any happier and be in a better place in my life right now and i owe that to him. >> thank you. mark? >> can you explain -- there's been an outpouring from former teammates, players, fans. what do you think it was about dutch that made him touch so many people, that made him such a fan favorite, almost made him bigger than the game? >> just the way he played the game, the way he commanded the field. you know?

he was such a great leader. i mean, it's hard for me to explain it. it was just a tremendous feeling that he gave us all as we got out on the field to compete. you know, we went into that -- went into that spring training in 1993, you know -- we weren't picked to do anything. the year before, they finished in last place. i came over as a free agent. from day one in spring training, we didn't care what other people thought about us. as we got through the season, these guys can't play. i don't know how they're doing it. there's no way they're going to make it through the whole year. darren wouldn't let us fail. you know? i mean, there were instances where he got in a couple people's faces and demanded that things be straightened out. you know? it wasn't an i team. it was a we team. and he didn't stand for anybody worrying about themselves being

the school of pennsylvania ballet's alice in wonderland dance camp gives them a chance to dance, make friends and work together to bring a childhood classic to life. camp starts today. joining me is samantha dunster. thanks for joining us. tell us all about camp. >> it's a wonderful time for these young dancers to come in and move around, be creative. they also work on props to help tell the story. they also do scenery. then they learn what we call repertoire, so steps to tell the story. then at the end on friday, they show the whole performance to their family. >> they are literally all aspects? >> all aspects. >> you have really young dancers. tell us at what age is it a good idea to start introducing dance? >> from experience, from my daughter, it's from the very beginning. you often see as they are walking, they are dancing,

new jersey and delaware, under the threat. this is through midnight. the heaviest rain will end around sunset or so. the flooding can be the residual affect after the heaviest rain has fallen, especially piling up in streams and creeks. a very steady rain and heavy at times. that's when the issue comes in. probably around one to two inches of rain for areas south of philadelphia are possible. it's not necessarily that's too much over 12-plus hour period, it's half an inch or inch falls in half an hour, that's when the flash flooding occurs. there's a warning in place. this is in kent county right over dover through 2:45 because heavy rain has been falling there. the rest of the region is under a flash flood watch. it's possible as we go throughout the afternoon. there's the heaviest rain. you can see yellow, orange, red over kent county. there's a few pockets of thunderstorms that are within that setup of heavy rain. it's more scattered pockets of steady rain over the suburbs and the lehigh valley, down to

philadelphia and a steady rain over south jersey as well. there's the closer look at the heaviest action falling. areas like cumberland county and salem county have been dealing with issues with saturated ground. it's not going to take a ton for flooding to start occurring. look at the hour by hour. morning hours into the afternoon, this is 2:00 p.m., the next round of heavy rain looks to start moving through. it continues through 4:30 really focused in south of the i-95 corrid corridor. that lasts through like i mentioned about sunset when we will see more scattered showers left behind. we will talk more about this and the better conditions in the days to come in just a bit. >> the storms could affect the schedule at musicfest in the lehigh valley. bands and singers are expected to take the stage in bethlehem beginning at noon. performance times could change throughout the day if the weather gets bad. if an event is canceled, customers can get a refund.

employees inside. a family of six sitting below trapped beneath the rubble. >> i ran to where i heard the screaming. >> reporter: the tornado formed so quickly, it touched down before warning sirens had a chance to go off. tulsa, now facing the damage that has been done. >> it's a miracle that we can stand here right now and talk about this happened. it's over with. now we are moving toward recovery. >> reporter: officials are still assessing the damage and asking folks to stay out of the area as much as possible. the record books say only three times in the last 50 years has a tornado touched down in tulsa in the month of august. this morning, phillies fans are remembering darren dutch daulton, the all star spent 14 years as a catcher for the team and was a key member of the squad that reached the world series in 1993. he died yesterday after a long

battle with brain cancer. a live look from citizens bank where they're sharing their memories of dutch. pamela osborne is live in south philadelphia where fans are looking back on the life of one of the team's most popular former players. >> reporter: we spent our morning at penrose diner in south philly, not too far from the ballpark where we are standing. we spoke to a man who recalls bumping into dutch there on more than one occasion. he like many others sharing his thoughts and condolences this morning. dan spent the morning remembering darren dutch daulton at the very place they met in years past. >> three or four times in here. he was in here a lot. my daughter was a cashier here. he was a friendly guy. real outgoing. >> reporter: at this diner in south philly, baseball fans spent their morning remembering

requires cities to give the department of homeland security access to detention facilities. they would also have to notify dhs before releasing anyone wanted on immigration violations. the lawsuit claims those requirements turn local jails into federal facilities. >> chicago will not let our police officers become political pawns in the debate. chicago will not let our residents have their rights isolated and violated. chicago will never relinquish our status as a welcoming city. >> philadelphia is a sanctuary city, which means if an undocumented immigrant is arrested for something other than their immigration status, police will not alert federal agents. in january, president trump signed an executive order blocking grants to sang sayctua cities. a judge blocked that in april. calling it quits, guardians of the galaxy star chris pratt

announced he and his wife are separating after eight years of marriage. it says in part, we tried hard for a loong time and were disappointed. it says, we still have love for each other and will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another. taylor swift's civil trial begins today. she says the radio host groped her as they took a photo before a concert in 2013. he denies the allegation and says the accusation cost him his job. he is suing her for $3 million in damages. swift is expected to testify at some point during the trial. nbc 101 your official television station of the philadelphia eagles. we were there as more than 36,000 eagles fans packed the link for a look at the team before this week's first preseason game. they had a chance to watch the team practice, then most of the

teen drivers may become more dangerous as they enter their senior year of high school. that's according to a study by liberty mutual student and an organization called s.a.d.d. older teen drivers can think of themselves as safer drivers despite experiencing more accidents and near misses than younger teen drivers. 7,000 teens are at work for the city of philadelphia this summer. organizers say the paid work and internships are critical to addressing the skill gap for at-risk young people. one of the more popular work sites is mural arts

learn how to be in the pursuit of excellence. that's the big deal. just to have courage and to be in the pursuit of excellence. this program provides that for them in a really big way so they can reach their goals. >> let's turn to you. let's talk about your experience with broadway dreams and how it led to professional success for you. >> absolutely. i began with the program about 12 years ago in atlanta where i'm from. i grew up with the program as a student and was immersed in the broadway experience. i then was able to book my broadway debut and bring it on the musical through the program. i've since done if then and i have continued to use broadway dreams as a ds-- the ultimate networking family. >> this works. >> it works. >> it definitely works. >> we have a lot of students in broadway shows now.

mostly light to steady over the suburbs. parts of the lehigh valley, berks county. look at the reds and oranges lighting up the southern parts of our viewing area, delaware into south jersey and into cape may, heavier rain and some storms pop up. that's lightning bolts indicated on the map. let's start with the more steady rain. the rain rates i checked a few minutes ago. close to half an inch falling per hour near norristown. some heavier pockets are moving to the northeast. then you see in slower rain in montgomery. this is still enough with saturated ground conditions if we stack on the rain, we could start to run into issues. it's more likely we will see issues in parts of south jersey. this has been a steady rain that's been falling across this area. the deeper greens is only a tenth of an inch per hour. some of the yellows, pockets of heavier river. then here is the heaviest stuff so far. close to three inches an hour over kent county.

this is the area under a flash flood warning. it's happening or going to happen over this area through 2:45. would not be surprised if more warnings pop up, which is why it's a great reason to have our app. as soon as they come down, i get the notification, the same time you do with your phone. look over the bay and into cumberland county. you see morris river getting a heavy rain. a little more than an inch an hour falling. on the hour by hour, there's the heavier rain falling currently. that starts to move out. the next batch begins in from 1:00 right on through 3:00 p.m. the heaviest is south. that will thin out 6:30, 7:00. we will have more rain than this model is showing through 8:30. then we will really push out the rain, leave the clouds for the overnight. actually, by tomorrow, the forecast will be much better. it's been very cool because of the storms moving through. temperatures struggling to try to make it to the 70s right now. it's 68 in philadelphia and 69

in mount holly. warmer south. the warm front is coming in there. it's starting to push in warmer air. because of the cloud cover and rain, you won't see the temperatures warm up much at all. go through three day outlook. today, it's a washout. we're at 73 at best in philadelphia. look as we go to the next couple days. low 80s, low humidity and sunshine breaking through. tuesday, wednesday look good. today just 70 in the suburbs, low 80s for tuesday and wednesday. almost the same forecast in the lee high valley and berks. we may see some spots in the upper 60s today. mid 70 0s for new jersey and t shore. low 70s in delaware with a chance of thunderstorming ro is through. we dry out tuesday and wednesday.
