and even cars flying into the air. nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 11:00, bullet holes in her home. a philadelphia mother says her children could have gotten killed after a gunman opened fire on police officers. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. those officers fired back, and tonight that gunman is in the hospital. nbc 10's denise nakano has been uncovering new details since she first reported this story as breaking news at 6:00. you spoke to neighbors who almost got caught in the crossfire. >> reporter: it was a mother and daughter and it was a close call. one of the bullets came within inches of hitting that young girl's head. >> a wreck. it was scary. very scary. >> reporter: a panicked natasha scrambled to account for each of her four children when bullets lit up her block. >> it went through the window into the ceiling and then i

guess the shell fell above her head. >> reporter: you can see where three of the gunmen's bullets hit her north philadelphia home on fair hill street. one on the side of the house and two striking the second floor. one of the stray bullets flew right over her 15-year-old daughter's head. >> i was watching tv and the bullet came flying in the window. >> reporter: the shootout between police and the gunman started when police got a call about a man with a gun. police later discovered he was driving a car that had been carjacked at gunpoint in new jersey. witnesses say police told the shooter to drop the gun, then -- >> that male fired twice at uniform officers. uniform officers returned fire hitting the male. >> reporter: police say the gunman's bullets missed the officers and hit the home. a broken upstairs bedroom window and a bullit lodged in a ceiling show how close this family came to tragedy. >> it's scary. you never know what's going to happen. >> reporter: the suspect was sent to the hospital and

underwent surgery. the officers who were involved were not hurt and are onnad inadministrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. denise nakano, nbc 10 news. right now at 11:00 -- new video shows the power of mother nature. this surveillance video is from a restaurant in maryland. watch the bottom of your screen as the storm flips this car over several times. another look at the damage. several cars got turned upside down in this shopping center, too. and serious damage to a nearby building. the national weather service will be there tomorrow to investigate if this was caused by a tornado. closer to home, heavy rain led to flooding at the jersey shore. jerry took this video from his front door in wildwood. you can see the video was almost above people's tires. his message for those drivers, turn around, don't drown. and the first alert weather team is still tracking some rain tonight. let's get an update from glenn hurricane schwartz. >> it's that same area, wildwood

down toward the delaware beaches that have the best chance of seeing some rain. it's dry in cape may right now. and heat to dry out. but more rain that's headed in that direction as you can see going back into virginia. it's all moving toward the northeast. it's not a lot of rain. it's not heavy rain. but it's rain. and you can get some during the night tonight and into the early morning hours, maybe a little heavier in cape may and at the delaware beaches than elsewhere. and so the roads should be wet by the time you get up in the morning in those areas while north and west, actually see some sunshine. there's going to be more cloudiness in delaware and south jersey than there will be in pennsylvania tomorrow. but we're expecting a lot of clouds to start off the day. the temperature not rising a whole lot as a result. p.a. suburbs, more sunshine, though. lehigh valley getting sunshine while the jersey shore gets a

little bit of rain first thing in the morning. but it will improve there and some beautiful weather is ahead. until the rain comes back. i'll let you know when that's coming in a few minutes. also tonight, the death of phillies legend darren daulton has raised new questions about a possible cluster of brain cancer. daulton died yesterday at the age of 55. he was on the phillies for 14 seasons and was affectionately known as dutch. in 2013, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. daulton is now the fifth former philly to die from that disease. nbc 10's keith jones spoke to a surgeon who treated one of those players, and he says the old veteran stadium could be the link. >> reporter: you've got to believe. tug mcgraw's strikeout to win the 1980 world series. >> i've never seen this kind of baseball. never been a part of this kind of baseball. never been prouder to be a professional baseball player.

>> reporter: lasting memories in veterans stadium that led to the phils first ride down broad street. mcgraw would be diagnosed with brain cancer and pass in gent 04. so would ken brett and johnny oates. three years later, a player and coach would receive the same diagnosis and pass. all four played at the vet. all that's left now is the mound in what's now lot "u." and home plate where darren daulton made his career, made us all fans and where doctors are paying close attention. >> quite a coincidence. it's disturbing. >> reporter: dr. steven brem treated mcgraw at the hospital at the university of pennsylvania. >> swing and a drive. >> reporter: add to the list darren daulton and you have five phillies who have fought brain cancer and played on the turf field at the vets. >> it's very provocative. the environmental protection agency was looking at astroturf

and looking to see if there's lead or some element in it. >> reporter: that study is still under way. the doctor admits there are too many cases of brain cancer on one team and in one city not to be curious. >> we're working around the clock trying to find ultimate answer to this disease and we have tug in our heart. we have darren in our heart and all our patients in our heart. >> reporter: keith jones, nbc 10 news. we are waiting for more details about any public tributes or memorials for darren daulton. in the meantime, look back at his career with the phillies and read more tributes to his legacy. we have full coverage right now on nbc10.com. new at 11:00 -- police in hatton township are on the hunt for a man accused of trying to lure a girl into his car. this is a sketch of the suspect. police say he tried to lure young girls on addison avenue yesterday. the girl who was riding her bike took off after the suspect told her that her parents had sent him to pick her up.

this is a surveillance image of the car police say the suspect used. it is possibly a 2003 gold or tan four-door hyundai elantra with new jersey tags. also tonight, take a look at this car. police say it was involved in a fatal hit and run in center city. right now investigators are looking for this newer model white jeep wrangler. it has large tires and a spare tire on the back. that crash happened early sunday morning near the corner of 13th and ray streets. 53-year-old ann broderick was killed. investigators say she was crossing the street when she was hit. the driver kept going. in south jersey tonight, police in camden are looking for the person who ran over two officers with an atv. look at this surveillance video from that scene. it happened just after 11:00 saturday night at the east coast gas station near broadway in mt. vernon. both officers had minor injuries. they are expected to be okay. from the streets to city hall, protesters are taking new

steps to bring attention to a deadly police shooting. this morning, they gathered in feltonville for david jones, where he was shot and killed by police in june. one protester plans to march all the way to washington to call for police reform. surveillance video captured the moments leading up to the shooting. jones ran away after pulling a gun on a police officer. but others claim jones had no weapon. today protesters also interrupted an event being held by council president daryl clark. clark released a statement today which reads in part, because of the circumstances in which mr. jones was shot and killed, including conflicting witness accounts and the troubling fact that he was shot from behind, we need a thorough investigation. we must also respect our passionate fellow citizens who are demanding justice in this tragedy. the pennsylvania attorney general's office is handling the investigation. delaware officials say charges could soon be filed in the wake of february's deadly

hit and run driver on a dirt bike. the victim had just walked out of a store when a man on a dirt bike plowed her down saturday as she stood on the sidewalk. surveillance cameras captured the rider running away from the scene. authorities say he dragged the victim more than 75 feet before it was all over. >> this is akin, to us, taking out a firearm and shooting somebody that happens to be standing on the sidewalk that has nothing to do with whatever business you're conducting. >> the victim suffered serious head and internal injuries. police are work, with the prosecutor's office on a more aggressive crackdown on illegal dirt bikes. tonight a hate crime investigation in our area. a local family is speaking to nbc 10 after they were attacked by a group of bikers. muhammad and his family were heading home to galloway township from jfk airport. he says several bikers started bounding h ining on his sister' minivan. muhammad got ought of the van he

was driving and he was punched and called indian. >> they shattered my window, both sides. and my wife was sitting with me. they tried to grab her n hit her, too. they broke the side mirror, too, and just took off. >> reporter: he says the group used profanities as they called him indian. police are investigating this as a racially motivated attack. also tonight from the top down, burglars have found a new way in as they break into local businesses from the roof. new at 11:00, brandon hutson is live where eight businesses have been hit. brandon? >> reporter: jacqueline, here someone climbed the roof and tried to get in through three different air conditioners. this is the thief's prime time to strike. after hours during the workweek. these photos show just how desperate a burglar was for a quick buck. >> you see anything like this before? >> no, never. i was shocked.

>> reporter: three broken rooftop ac units where someone tried breaking into benny the bum's crab house. it happened last tuesday. >> there was a security guy that said he did hear noise like the night before. >> reporter: the owner noticed something wrong with the ac 24 hours later. >> pretty hot in here. >> reporter: the thief failed to get in here, philadelphia police say the person stole an unknown amount of cash from a pizza shop nearby. nbc 10 learned someone targeted five businesses on this map, plus three others between june 28th and august 2nd. all near bustleton avenue. all through the roof. while the crime is creative, it's not original. earlier this year investigators busted a man and juvenile for in some cases, rappelling into several montgomery county shops. numerous surveillance videos led to a break in that case. philly police hope cameras can do the same in bustleton. >> it's upsetting that someone tried to break in in the middle of the night. it's scary. >> reporter: and the owner of

this restaurant told his workers to be extra cautious when they close tonight. insurance will cover the cost of those broken ac units. live in bustleton, brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. tonight. deja vu for neighbors in one jersey shore community. thanks to today's heavy rain, the standing water is back near the newly built dunes in margate. last week a judge ordered the beach protection project to shut down until at least friday. the judge wants solutions on how to fix the drainage issues that caused the bacteria-filled standing water. officials say they will pump this water towards the ocean as early as tomorrow. and high drama for a driver in texas today who got trapped by floodwaters. san antonio firefighters were called to rescue this person from the roof of their car. you can see the rescuers had to use an extra stepladder. a rescue diver helped coax that driver to safety. after a rainy monday, we'll get some good sunshine this

week. first alert meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is here with your neighborhood forecast. >> it's going to start off mighty cloudy tomorrow. the low clouds are with us. we don't exactly have dense fog but we'll start off the day with an overcast condition and only later in the day we'll be seeing sunshine. then the middle of the week, that's really nice. 67 in philadelphia. 71 in rehoeb eths beach. warm spot, 60 degrees in mt. pocono. the cool spot, the ocean temperature is 72 degrees. the afternoon high today, 69. tomorrow, up near 80. and then we continue to climb toward 85 by thursday, which is still a degree below normal. this is the way we started, 11:00 this morning, and things lining up for that heavy rain band in central delaware and right into cumberland county, new jersey. we've got much, much less rain in pennsylvania. and we still have some on the

radar now back approaching washington. that's going to be coming in overnight. this is much lighter rain. not going to cause any additional flooding. and the amount of rain estimated by radar, way less than an inch. northern delaware, all the way up through pennsylvania. some places less than a half inch. much less down to the south but right in the middle in that zone, it was quite a bit from dover all the way into cumberland county. radar estimate as high as 6 1/2 inches in part of cumberland county. 3.7 in dover. flooding there. vineland and millville. 3 to 4 inches. flooding in those areas. and the bull's-eye is just south of cedarville in cumberland county with five to six inches of rain. now what about specifically at the jersey shore? close to two inches in cape may point. 1 1/2 in dennisville. look at wamath. over three inches. then 1.8.

less than two inches to do that mess to margate. they had five inches last time. that was a better excuse. less than two inches should not cause that kind of flooding. 1.24 inches on long beach island. here's the futurecast. we go through the rest of the night. we've got some more rain in delaware and south jersey. that continues to move through. we start the day off with clouds. but then we gradually get at least a little bit of sunshine in the afternoon. but much sun here. wednesday and thursday, the temperature goes back up. p.a. suburbs also start off with a lot of clouds. the most sunshine tomorrow is in the lehigh valley and then some beautiful weather the next two days, too. the place with the only real chance for rain tomorrow morning. that's jersey shore or the southern portion of delaware. and then, as we head toward next weekend, that's when trouble starts again. friday, looks like a rainy day in much of the region.
