three weeks. we have a busy morning to start with. the trump administration weighing its options for north korea, after the regime's harsh response to the new u.n. sanctions. they may be the toughest sanctions ever. but could they play into kim jong-un's hands? we'll about all of this with u.n. ambassador nikki haley. first, peter alexander with the latest on all of it. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. north korea is vowing revenge, condemning the sanctions, warning that the u.s. will pay dearly. president trump is waking up with a serious polly showdown on his hands, as he gets prepared to welcome the vice president and cabinet secretaries to his bedminister property this week. the trump administration dealing with north korea. >> we're going to start fighting back. >> reporter: the president

holding an hour-long phone call with his secretary of state, overseas in arsia. as kim jong-un warns its missiles are not on the negotiating table. from a state tv broadcaster, this apparent threat. there's no bigger mistake than the u.s. thinking it's safe because it's across the motion. a missile that can reach as far as chicago, the president touting a u.n. vote for $1 billion in sanctions against north korea, supported by both china and russia. mr. trump demanding the penalties be implemented right awash aw away, as his national security adviser says all options are on the table. mr. trump is trying to reenergize his core supporters. taking aim at familiar targets like the media. tweeting, the trump base is

self-described working vacation, we're going to see the president working. heeds schedu he's scheduled to host the health and human service secretary on the opioid crisis. matt and savannah? >> peter, thank you. we're happy to have nikki haley here with us, ambassador to the united nations. congratulations to the vote. 15-0, in the security council, who means you got russia and china onboard with this. looking at the list of sanctions, they're severe. they target a lot of north korea's expaorts, like coal and other minerals. $1 billion a year they can use for this nuclear program. but they have lived under tough economic sanctions in the past. why are they going to work this time? >> we don't know it's going to work. but it's something we needed to do. we said on saturday, this wasn't going to stop our north korea problem. it is going to send a strong message and a united message. it was a strong day for the united states. it was a strong day for the united nations.

you had the entire international community tell kim to stop. >> you did. and you got china and russia onboard. and that was a diplomatic feat. and the devil is in the details, as you know better than anyone else. how do you get china and russia to implement and enforce these sanctions? i read a quote from a north korean expert in "the times" this morning. the resolution, 1 ye1 years in e past didn't work. >> they basically very much said we have to enforce these to be -- for for this to be legitimate. we have to hold the countries accountable. we will be watching to see who is enforcing. more importantly than that, china accestepped up and said, they're not only going to vote for this, they announced they're going to enforce and urged other countries to enforce. the missile launch took place right next to their border.

their ground shook. the chinese people felt it. they know this is series. >> for decades, your country has been trying to build up some kind of nuclear deterrent or offensive capabilities. you're now this close. you've got a nuclear device. you've got missiles that you've shown can reach the heartland of the united states. your last step is to combine those two things. why in the world would you negotiate now when you are this close to having the weapon that will give you the strongest hand? >> he may not negotiate now. i think what we did was, we sent a message. now, we have gone directly after their hard currency. think about it. all of the revenue that comes into north korea. it doesn't go to feeding their people. it goes to a ballistic missile program. they will not longer will have the money to do that. >> can you stop him in time from combining those two things? the missile and shrinking the

face? >> he has not said that. he said all options are on the table. and the discussions we had, we'll do whatever it takes to counter north korea. >> separate issue. there's a new poll that shows the vast majority of americans do not trust what they're getting out of the white house. sucks in ten don't consider the president honest and trustworthy. and only 24% of americans say they trust all or most of what they hear from the white house. it's one thing when you're talking about crowd sizes in the inauguration. in your line of work, this is serious. does the white house have a credibility problem? does that concern you? >> as a governor, every day, you try to get the trust of your people. that's part of your people. and the only way you get the trust, is not by what you say, by what you do. if you look at the actions, this president, all of the new investment that's happening, a lot of people will say, i don't believe this or that. >> you say that, look at the actions, ait acknowledges -- it

tacits acknowledgment because you can't trust the words. >> i don't see that way. i look at results. i know there's back and forth and sometimes unnecessary chatter that goes back and forth with that. but you have to look at the results. this is a time we have to look at the american people and say, are they better today than yesterday? and i think they are. >> the administration's just received a sweeping report on climate change, coming from scientists at 13 federal agencies. it hasn't been made public yet the but it's been reported, that we're feeling global climate change right now. and human activities are primarily responsible for that global climate change. given the fact we just pulled out of the paris climate accord, will the administration embrace the results of this study? >> first of all, you have to look at, just because we pull out of the paris accord, doesn't mean we don't believe in climate protection. we're saying we're not going to sell out american businesses to do that. >> will we embrace the results of this report from 13 federal

agencies? >> i haven't seen the report. but i don't see any reason why they wouldn't. a lot of this is, we're not saying that climate change is not real. it is real. it's how do you have that balance between making sure you have jobs and businesses moving and how you protect the climate? the answer is in the middle. >> ambassador, nice to have you here. >> appreciate it. we have a lot more for you this morning, including major news including the safety of some of the military aircraft. the marine corps is considering to order a temporary aviation standdown to refocus marine pilots and crews on safety. this follows a series of accidents, including the crash off of the coast of australia over the weekend. tom costello has the latest on this. what can you tell us? >> reporter: this would not be undecemb unprecedented. but it underscores safety concerns in the military. in a standdown is addressed, it could last 24 hours, giving every ground crew time to focus on the basics. it comes after three marines

were killed in the crash off of australia on saturday. in the coral sea, search teams have found the wreckage of that marine corps mv-22 osprey that went into the water, while trying to land on a tip during military exercises. of the 26 people onboard, 23 were rescues. the lee marines killed. nathan ordway of wichita. ruben vilasco of los angeles and benjamin cross of maine. >> it would take forever to express the love that we had and have still for him. >> part of me is gone forever. >> reporter: saturday's accident comes just three weeks after 15 marines and a sailor tied when a kc-130 crashes into the mississippi. five f-16s crashed in july alone. three of them fatal. now, the marine corps is considering a temporary standdown. it's not clear whether the standdown will apply to battle zones. the osprey accident follows an

osprey crash off japan last december, during a refueling mishap. but the osprey is not the plane that suffered a series of crashes duringdeployment. >> it has a good safety record over ten yards. >> reporter: the fleet is aging. the average plane is 15 years old. the average fighter is 30 years. >> the planes are getting old. and the aviators are getting tired. that increases the potential for aviation accidents and incidents. >> reporter: now, remember the air force never stood down after the first gulf war in 1991. pilots continued to fly the no-fly zone. then, the war in bosnia, before iraq and afghanistan. decades of war have meant wear and tear on planes and equipment. an urgent manhunt is under way for the suspect that killed

a police in western massachusetts. clinton police officer, gary michael, was shot and killed during a traffic stop. that happened monday night. police are searching for 39-year-old ian mccarthy. they consider him armed and dangerous. an update on a manhunt we told you about on monday. the search for a rape suspect is now over. they found the body of brandon powell with a self-inflicted gunshot wound last night. the suicide ends the manhunt after powell escaped custody on friday when he overpowered a depu deputy. a growing concern in florida about a dangerous sinkhole. it's swallowed up two homes. that happened last month. now, more houses in the area are being condemned. kerry sanders is in land o'lakes just north of tampa. good morning. >> reporter: it's five homes. it's what you can't see that's of greatest concern. the land is beginning to buckle.

let's take a look from above, as you can see from the drone of this area, some of the fife homes that have added to the two, that were swallowed, are in the shot. but the land around it is starting to show divots. and the experts say the divots suggest that the larger. and those in homes that are unaffected, the question is, could they be next? this morning, new urgency for residents living around this sinkhole near tampa. five more homes have been condemned and are slated for demolition. officials finding cracks in foundations and sidewalks. >> sad. >> it's a disaster. >> a sinkhole. >> reporter: seven homes falling victim to this house-eats natural disaster. our affiliate wfla flew overhead. >> the house itself is gob. the pool still stands.

and the debris that's in it, they're pulling it out, piece by piece. >> reporter: emergency operations are under way to shore up the hole, dumping limestone in its edges. in this part of florida, sandy soil sits on top of a layer of clay and a layer of limestone. water or drought conditions can dissolve the layers, forming a sinkhole. this one is interesting to scientists at the university of south florida. 67 years ago, there was a large lake here. in time, it was filled in. becoming orange groves and vacation homes. if the neighborhood's history may have played a role in the formation of this monster sinkhole. >> my suspicion is this is all the material that was once at the bottom of the lake. and this area used to be lake bottom. >> reporter: that sinkhole there, large enough to swallow a

747. homeowners in this area are wondering why their mortgage companies didn't require them to have sinkhole insurance. of course, it's now too late to purchase it. matt, savannah? >> heart goes out to them. kerry, thank you. there's new developments in a story we told you about last week. hackers have put out more insider info from hbo. and they threatened to issue even more if the company doesn't pay a ransom of several million dollars. using the name mr. smith, the hackers served up a fresh batch of stolen files on monday. the data dump includes what appears to be scripts from five "game of thrones" episodes. including one episode that has not run yet. hbo is working with police and cyber security experts. al is here with the first look at the forecast. not hacked. ready for release right now. >> we have a lot of weather to talk about. out in texas, big problems. san antonio, massive flooding. a lot of high water rescues.

that's because it bpits the hit show, "top chef," against the teamsters. thomas is here this morning. >> reporter: typically the drama is in the kitchen. for over a decade, padma lakshmi has been the host of "top chef." now, the star is appearing in a massachusetts court, testifying against four men who tried to shut down the show with graphic insults and threats to their crew. padma lakshmi, testifying she was petrified when union members allegedly intimidated her on the set of her show in 2014. four members of boston's teamsters local 25 have been charged with attempt eed extortion. court documents describe the men using strong-arm ak ticks, threatening to shut down the sets if the show didn't hire union drivers.

lakshmi told the court she felt bullied when she arrived at the shooting location, accusing one man of leaning into the car she was riding in, telling her, quote, what a shame about that pretty face. the reality tv host adding, i felt he was saying, i might hit you. video taken at the time was used as evidence in court and use es the men using racist and sexist language insulting the crew. >> i'm not a skcab like you. >> reporter: tin sults, personal. gail simmons also received against the men. saying teamsters were blocking her van from entering the parking lot. and multiple vehicles rented for the production had their tired slashed. the men have pleaded not guilty. according to "the boston globe," that the teamsters said they

have a right to organize and demand things from employers. lakshmi is not commenting. late last year, another man who was charged in the case, pleaded guilty. he was sentenced to two years probation and six months conf e confineme confinement. he was ordered to pay $24,000 in restituti restitution. this is in front of a jury hearing this. should last about two weeks before we get determination about the case. you can hear the language. they have video. it will be up to the jury to see if they find them guilty. >> keep us posted. now, to the controversy facing google. the company coming under fire about a personal memo from an employee that rails against gender equality. that worker is yout of a job ths morning. jo ling kent has the latest on this. >> reporter: this is google, one of the most valuable companies in the world, processing search

results each year. now, facing criticism over an internal document written by an employee, saying that men are better at tech jobs than women. now, the company is take action. google is grappling with a crisis gone viral, after what is being called a manifesto, by a male engineer. the memo alleges male and female tech workers differ in their abilities due to biological causes. that women are prone to more anxiety and look for work-life status. and that diversity efforts are bad for business. that employee was fired overnight. nbc news has not confirmed his term nation. the google ceo responded to employees, saying the manifesto violated its code of conduct. and crossed the line by advan

of health and human services, tom price. they will talk about the opioid epidem epidemic. >> thank you very much. now, to a tragic story out of ohio. the parents of an 8-year-old boy who have filed a federal lawsuit against his school district. and they're claiming that a treacherous school environment caused their son to take his own life. blake mccoy has this story this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. what can cause an 8-year-old boy to want to take his own life? hanging himself from his bunk bed. in a newly-filed lawsuit this morning, the parents alleged that the school should have done more to protect him. gabriel was just 8 years old when he took his own life in january. according to his parents, this video shows the third grader being bullied at school, two days earlier. here's gabriel's mom, shortly after his death. >> he probably didn't want to say, mom, somebody is bullying or picking on me.
