to a key air force base. >> what was the timing of this? it followed a harsh warning from president trump, that any threats from kim jong-un would be met with, quote, fire and fury like the world has never seen. >> our team is ready to break in all down, starting with nbc chief foreign affairs correspondent, andrea mitchell. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the north korean threat, frighteningly routine for the rogue regime, was a thrilling response to thunderous words from president trump, as kim jong-un has a weapon that was closer to reaching the u.s., than previously thought. prump, trying to stop north korea from hitting the u.s. >> they will be met with fire and fury, and frankly power. the likes of which this world

has never seen before. >> reporter: drawing a red line, just reports after a major nuclear advance by north k. pre tough talk, north korea issued a threat of its own. announcing in a statement it was carefully examining plans to attack the u.s. territory of guam, creating what it called an enveloping fire. troops are stationed on the remote ireland,ete island, alon than 160,000 guam residents. a new brief tells nbc news, kim jong-un may have a miniature nuclear warhead, small enough to fit inside one of his new long-range missiles. a missile that could reach the u.s. mainland. north korea has to overcome technical hurdles. experts say that is a matter of when, not if. >> there is a growing consensus that the pace of the program is

increasing steadily. the effectiveness of the program, missile and nuclear, is getting better. >> reporter: now, president trump is strongly hinting at a military option, a pre-emptive strike. but the u.s. does not know where all of north krorea's facilitie are hiding under ground. and north korea could retaliate against people in seoul, including 100,000 americans and 28,000 troops stationed there. the u.s. has successfully tested missile defenses from the west coast, hitting a test missile over the pacific. but the system is not fool-proof. meanwhile, the president's strong language is being criticized by leading lawmakers of both parties. democrat dianne feinstein calling his rhetoric bombastic. and john mccain cautioning against making empty threats. >> the great leaders i've seen, they don't threaten unless they

are ready to act. and i'm not sure that president trump is ready to act. and so, maybe it will turn out all right. he's the president. i'm not. but i don't think that some of the great leaders that i have admired would have taken that same path. >> reporter: and as for the threat to guam, u.s. officials are discounting it as part of north korea's continuing anger over b-1 bombers who are flying from the island over the korean peninsula. but the real fear is that the rhetoric is escalating from both sides as they draw new red lines. and president trump faces his first military crisis. savannah and matt, back to you. >> andrea mitchell on this story for us. a scary story. thank you very much. let's bring in nicolle wallace and nbc news military analyst, retired army colonel jock ja jack jacobs. let's talk about the rhetoric. is this the president giving kim jong-un a taste of his own medicine?

or is it going to make a bad situation worse? >> i think it's irrelevant, actually. i first heard the remarks, i somebody read them to me, i thought that kim jong-un had read the remarks. >> is it dangerous? do the words matter in this context? >> the words do matter. but the president has a tendency to be bombastic all the time. and to the extent this is about war, it's important. but to the extent, it broadcasts what we're going to do, it's not. >> let's not dismiss the words so quickly. fire and fury, as a military guy, jack, what do you read into fire and fury? is this conventional weaponry? or is he threatening something else? >> the suggestion is he's going to use nuclear weapons. there's a difference between

using nuclear weapons and shock and awe, using nonnuclear means. it's just to scare north korea and see what they do next. >> nicolle, when someone says what president trump said yesterday, he drew a line in the stand. do our adversaries cross the line? shortly after he said that, north koreans said they're looking at plans to attack guam. a u.s. territory. by the fact they said that, didn't they cross the line? >> sure. and this president ran as someone who was going to almost in a "seinfeld" like way, be the opposite of barack obama in every way, shape and form. over and over, he criticized president obama for drawing that red line in syria. he has drawn a far more stark, a far more inflammatory, a far more dangerous red line. and he's the kind of guy who would be sort of shamed into sort of keeping up with his own words. so, the language is so stunning because it contradicts all of the traditions of american

military history. you talked about shock and awe. those were words used after the military phase had begun. >> by the media. >> those were not words when we were engaged with diplomacy. those weren't words when the debate about iraq was at the u.n. security council, which is where this conversation was over the weekend. and this is a president that's now used language he can't put back in the toothpaste tube. >> there's a theory that this is all by design. the president uses the hot rhetoric so the north koreans feel like, he might be willing to actually use that force. and that's the deterrent effect. do you buy it? >> no. this president was few things by design. he shoots from the hip all the time. and i think his words are taken with a grain of salt. also, if you're going to do anything, you have to convince the military establishment to go along with it. we have pretty cool heads there. and i think it will be difficult

to convince them to do pre-emptive attacks. >> nicolle, jack said the words were designed for the consumption of each other. they got the attention of the north koreans. get the attention of our allies, as well. and gotten the attention of people in congress. what do you expect to see over the next couple of days, in terms for support for the president on this issue? >> anytime a country goes to war, the president typically enjoys support because men and women are in harm. not only our military families and soldiers, but other countries. this is such an extraordinary case that on the day he elevated the chances of that happening, he was rebuked by -- no one currently serving in the military. but barry mccaffrey talked to us. the cooler heads, are the secretary of defense, are the generals serving on his own staff. and they seem to believe this is language that will not be matched in the moment by military action. >> we will continue to watch, of

course. colonel jack jacobs, great to get your perspective. you, too, nicolle. breaking overnight, an apparent ambush on soldiers in a paris suburb. officials say a driver rammed his car into the group. they believe he did it deliberately. keir simmons has the latest on the investigation. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. nbc news letting the french prosecutor has opened an official terrorist investigation. witnesses described seeing a car with one person inside, waiting to strike. then accelerating towards the soldiers. this morning, police are checking video surveillance to identify the vehicle, a bmw, and find the driver. paris, again, on high alert today, as police are hunting a suspect car that rammed into a group of soldiers, injuring six. three are in a series condition, after the latest accident in levallois. the mayor describing it as deliberate and odious act of aggression.

to target soldiers who were there to protect against attacks at 8:00 in the morning is cowardly. the soldiers coming out of the barracks this morning, were part of a contingent to counter terror attacks. this, the latest in a series of incidents in and around paris, targeting security forces that are keeping one of the world's most visited tourist cities on-edge. among the attacks this year, a muslim extremist shot dead after pretending to grab a weapon at the airport. a man shoutingally akbar and wielding machetes attacking two soldiers at the louvre. another shot down outside of notre dame with a hammer. and a police officer killed and two seriously injured, after a gunman opened fire on a police car in the champs-elysees. this latest incident, using a vehicle, one of isis' favorite attack modes. this all happened in an area of

paris that's home to the main french intelligence service. while france is under a state of energy, dating back to when people were killed in a string of terror attacks. the prime target, the very authorities working to prevent attacks. matt and savannah? >> keir simmons in london for us. a lot more to get to this morning, including the search, it's over for a man suspected of killing a missouri police officer. ian mccarthy was taken into custody last night after somebody called 911, to report a person walking on the highway. police say he shot and killed officer gary michael on a routine stop on monday night. michael was able to return fire and wounded mccarthy. he's in stable condition. president trump is vowing the u.s. will win the fight against the growing opioid crisis. >> nobody is safe from this epidemic that threatens young

and old, rich and poor, urban and rural communities. everybody is threatened. >> the president met with administration officials at his new jersey golf club on tuesday, to discuss strategy on this. but he stopped short as his opioid task force had recommended. the president said they will meet the crisis with early preventi prevention, to keep drug supplies from having this country. now, the growing excite over two jackpots. mega millions is closing in on $400 million. and tonight's powerball jackpot has ballooned to $300 million. kerry has been wracking up the tickets. >> reporter: didn't win. as did zero people won. as we look at the drawing last night, don't throw away your tickets in the mega millions

going to testify today. joe fryer is at the courthouse in denver for us. >> reporter: good morning. calls trial was david mueller. he's the former deejay who sued taylor swift, saying her groping allegation is false and cost him his career. david mueller on the stand more than three hours, recalled his version of events from a meet and greet, as taylor swift looked on in the courtroom. at issue, what happened when swift, mueller and mueller's girlfriend posed for this photo. mueller testified as he moved to get into the picture, his hand was closed and came into contact with part of her body. i felt what was a rib cage or ribs. and mueller added, it as jostling, that our hands

touched. but he never touched her behind as swift has alleged. swift's skirt is not rumpled. the pop star never reported the incident to police. but one of her reps told the radio station and two days later mueller was fired. he sued swift and members of her team saying the groping allegation cost him his job that pays more than $150,000 a year. on the stand tuesday, mueller said, it's a horrible thing i'm accused of and i want to clear my name. swift countersued claiming assault and battery. in court, the pop star could be seen writing notes to her attorney. her mother and co-defendant andrea broke down in tears. during opening statements, their attorney asked, what is wrong with this picture? a woman is assaulted, a woman reports it and she gets sued? it doesn't make sents. he says that swift is asking for $1 in damages, telling the jury, she's not trying to bankrupt this man. she's trying to tell people out there you can say no when

hit hbo shows, like "game of thrones." >> this is absolutely a very terrifying issue for people in hollywood. >> reporter: matt bellamy, editorial director at "the hollywood reporter" says hackers e-mailed them what appears to be controversial hbo documents. internal e-mails from a company executi executive, a plot summary from the next "game of thrones" episode and this ransom note, addressed to hbo. in the five-minute video, set to ominous music from "game of thrones," the hackers call themselves mr. smith and demand hbo pay them millions of dollars or face more leaks of sensitive company materials. in a statement, hbo says a forensic review is ongoing. it's working with cyber security firms and law enforcement to resolve the incident. and the company has no reason to believe their e-mail system as a

♪ we're back. 7:43. the latest report card on how the airlines are treating passengers. >> this comes just four months after that incident. we all talked about it. where a man suffered injuries when he was dragged off an oversold united flight. nbc's tom kcostello covers aviation. >> reporter: the bottom line is that 2.5 million people are flying every day in this country. and this morning, we have the latest numbers of passengers who are bumped, the most on-time airlines and the airlines who have some work to do. safe to say airline customer service has suffered a black eye in 2017. >> this is wrong. other, my god. look at what you did to him. >> reporter: viral videos of dr. david dao dragged off in april. a fight with a passenger. of a delta agent, threatening

passengers who refused to be bumped. >> that can be a federal offense. you and your kids will be -- >> oh. >> reporter: and an all-out brawl in ft. lauderdale after spirit airline cut hundreds of flights. after public shaming, the airlines promised to do better. >> the game-changer is video. now, we can see some of the things the airlines have done. it's been a game-changer. >> reporter: this morning, evidence the airlines are trying to do better. in the first six months of the year, the number of passengers bumped from flights, dropped to a 22-year low. fewer than 1 passenger out of every 10,000. >> i feel like everyone is trying to, you know, care more about the customer because everyone was getting so mad about everything. >> reporter: and good news for the summer family getaway. 76% of flights were on time in june. number one, no surprise, hawaiian air had the best record, followed by alaska,

powerful nation in the world. secretary tillerson saying from guam, the american people should sleep well tonight. matt? >> all right, kristen welker. kristen, thank you. breaking overnight, french prosecutors have launched a terror investigation after a car rammed into a group of soldiers. at least six soldiers were injured. three of them seriously. this happened in a paris suburb where special units who guard french landmarks are based. officials are calling this incident clearly deliberate. they launched a manhunt for a lone driver in a dark bmw. ford is taking action to correct a carbon monoxide problem that is affecting police departments in the u.s. we reported on officers being sickened by fumes while using a ford explorer police cruisers. the vehicles were modified after they left the factory to install emergency police lights. ford says those holes and gaps were not properly sealed, letting fumes into the cabin.

upbringing. and there's parts that are shocking. parts that are endearing. she had an unusual childhood, being taken all over the country. extreme poverty. how do you describe hery? >> she's just a great representation of how resilient humans are. that we can go for a lot and make it on the other side willing to love and accept. one of the things she taught me, she hasn't forgiven her parents because she doesn't feel there's anything they need to forgive. d she accepts this was the best they could. and that's a beautiful sentiment. >> you mention she was on the set sometimes. i would like to call my lifeline. did you have her on speed dale dial dial? how much do you want to be connected to the real person when you are portraying a character? >> as much as you can. at the end of the day, she was letting go and allowing us to tell the story, knowing it's a movie. it's not going to be an exact

representation of her memory how things went. we spoke a lot. >> as i mentioned, it's such an unusual upbringing. the movie and the book open where she's cooking at the age of 3 years old and is burned by hot flames. i was thinking, it's so strange and unusual. and yet, there's something universal about it. you overcome your past and you scrape by and you make it. i thought about you acting since you were 7 years old and kind of going through that same process in a sense. could you identify with that aspect of it? >> i think what's incredible about this story is although it seems like a specific upbringing that not many people would have had, it weirdly has so many general things in it that people relate to. whether you had an unconventional upbringing or a parent that you don't feel like raised you in the way you wanted to be raised. there's so many different ways that i think you can look at this story and connect with it. so, that's kind of -- with this, it was just about connecting with jeannette and telling her

story. i tried to keep myself out of it as much as possible. but i think for an audience member, there's a lot. >> to connect to. you are directing. you have a new movie. her praises. >> strength through vulnerability. now, that's a mantra that i try to live by every day. >> reporter: the path to that unforgettab unforgettable moment forged by her spirit and ability to defy all odds. in 2005, she was in a plane crash in nigeria that killed 107 people. she an only one other person survived. she began a long recovery process. more than 100 surgeries and countless hours of physical therapy. much of it at shriners hospital for children in galveston, texas. >> i didn't have movement. i couldn't do anything by myself. when i got to shriners, they basically gave everything back to me, really. especially my independence. my happiest memories are right here in this room. >> reporter: and you haven't been back here in a while. >> not since 2011. >> a large part of that recovery

happened here in the musical therapy room. how important was music to your recovery? >> music was my escape. knowing i had that thing that wasn't taken by the accident, i was so happy i had a place i could express it. >> reporter: it was also the first place she ever sang publicly. this is the first stage you ever performed on? >> yep. ever, ever. i was so supernervous. >> reporter: while she is still undergoing treatment, she serves as an inspiration to those here at shriners. >> i wanted to meet her. >> reporter: like 9-year-old sami. >> hello. i love your dress. >> thank you so much. your dress is so cute, too. >> thanks. >> you look so cute. >> reporter: what kind of inspiration is she for some of the other patients here? >> we can't underestimate how
