back from trump's dire warnings. we have coverage starting with peter alexander. good morning. >> reporter: one week into his working vacation, president trump is clearly in a talkative mood. yesterday, when his press secretary held up a sign that said one more question, the president plowed ahead and took one after another, for minutes more. defied his critics, stepping up his rhetoric against north korea. and calling the repeal and replace of obamacare disgraceful. president trump, doubling down on his fire and fury threat against north korea. later, sharpening his words for kim jong-un. he disrespected our country greatly. he said things that are horrific. >> reporter: the president upping the ante, saying he would strike guam. >> if he does something in guam, it will be an event, the likes

property. let's look more closely at this crisis, with north korea. one of guam's top government officials is issuing a call for calm, amid north korea's threats to attack that u.s. territory. nbc's miguel almaguer is there this morning. >> reporter: here in streets and the beaches are busy at this hour. taking the threats in stride, saying there's nothing they can do but sit and wait. ballistic missiles said to be aimed 20 miles off of the sun-kissed beaches of guam could be coming in a week, according to the latest threats from north korea's military. today, after another day of fiery rhetoric -- >> maybe it wasn't tough enough. >> reporter: -- it's business as usual, on an island dependant on tourists. >> i'm not too worried about it. i'm confident that the u.s. will

protect us. >> reporter: 20 miles offshore, where the missiles can fall, tour boat owners worry that even a threat can hurt business. they're grateful the military the nearby. nearly 7,000 u.s. service members are stationed here. the air force, navy and coast guard all have facilities on an island only 30 miles long. the stronghold is known as the tip of the spear, the most western military base on u.s. soil. also protecting the island, thaad, an incoming missile defense system, that in testing has a 100% success rate. >> our motto is ready to fight. our wing mission is to provide president trump any options and air power across all of the spectrums of the battlefield. >> reporter: this morning, it's not just guam under threat. >> i'm bill neely in seoul, where people are relieved the u.s. won't act against north korea without consulting them. but they're debating whether

they shouldn't have their own nuclear weapons. there's no panic here. but they're desperate for all of the tough talk to stop. >> reporter: back in guam, there are new concerns for many who live in this u.s. territory. >> i don't know what's going to happen and i'm scared. >> reporter: there is no new warning system in place. for now, guam relying on 15 sirens like these. alerting those in low-lying areas, like beaches, they must quickly find safer ground. but if north korea launched four ballistic missiles, a threat they are examining, they could hit guam just 14 minutes. still, the governor says, no need to panic. do you sleep well at night? >> i sleep very well at night. >> reporter: this morning, a plea to stay calm. for a small island in the crosshairs of a serious global threat. with tourists hitting restaurants and bars, some

hotels including our own, are testing internal paging systems inside guest rooms. that are looking for a way to notify the public in the event of an incoming threat. savannah, back to you. >> i'm sure that's unserving. miguel, thank you. this morning, there's new developments into the investigation of what could have caused u.s. diplomats in cuba to lose their hearing. now, the canadian government is saying some of its staff may have been victimized by what's called acoustic attacks. kerry sanders is in miami with this. good morning. >> good morning. this morning, there are more questions than answers in the strange case of the mysterious hearing loss among some u.s. employees at the u.s. embassy. as well as others who have complained of feeling nauseous. this morning, it's unclear how many staff at the u.s. embassy in havana have lost their hearing and if the damage will be permanent.

>> we don't know exactly where this came from. okay? we can't blame any individual or a country at this point yet. an investigation is under way. we take that very seriously. >> reporter: former spies and intelligence officers tell nbc news, it sounds like a misuse of cold war technology. sound waves that can cause people to lose their balance and feel ill. >> it sounds like something, where our diplomats in cuba were being harassed by cuban intelligence. and the technology just got out of their hands a little bit. the intent was not necessarily to harm american diplomats. it was to make them feel uncomfortable. nauseous, and dizzy. >> reporter: the cuban government announcing it is not responsible and now is investigating. how is it someone might be targeted but not hear the attack? >> if you can hear this tone, raise your hand? >> reporter: by age 10 we lose

our ability to hear ultrahigh frequencies. it's why adriana can hear what i cannot. even though i couldn't hear the higher frequency, were i exposed to it for a long period of time, it could cause -- >> hearing loss and loss of balance. >> reporter: the constant sound waves were triggered by a third company. some have suggested even russia, with a recent history of painful harassment against u.s. diplomats. >> we did kick out two cuban diplomats. that was to send a message this will not happen again. this seems like a mistake on the part of cuban intelligence. >> reporter: this morning, u.s. investigators and canadian investigators are sharing notes back and forth to see if there may have been some listening device that also sent out an ultrahigh frequency. and over a period of time, that frequency may have unintentionally harmed people in its path.

matt? >> as you said, a lot more questions than answers right now. kerry, thank you very much. a lot more to get to this morning, including new orleans, under a state of emergency this morning. the city's water pumping system is malmalfunctioning. and with more rain in the forecast, officials say some neighborhoods are in danger of serious flooding. the city has only one working turbine, which provides power to trainage pumps. so, schools are closed today as a precaution. there will be more testimony in the case of a hazing death at penn state university. this follows a stunning development on thursday, when a detective suggested someone intentionally erased key surveillance video from the night in question. kristen dahlgren is at the white house this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. an attorney for the piazza family is calling this a monumental cover-up. and the district attorney tells me additional charges could come

soon for one of the defendants expected any minute here for today's hearing. on day four of the hearing, a courtroom shocker. the detective claiming that the surveillance system from the basement of the fraternity, characterized as malfunctioning, was intentionally destroyed, two days after timothy piazza's death. on the stand thursday, the detective asked, what happened to the footage in the basement. responding, it appears to be deleted. adding one of the identified suspects is one of the defendants in the courtroom. the fbi is analyzing the security system. >> the big question becomes what was so bad on it that it needed to be deleted, versus what we've seen that was horrible. >> reporter: video from other cameras on the first floor of the house has been the crux of the prosecution's case. allegedly fraternity brothers forc forced timothy piazza to drink

in excess. and ignored his skrinjuries aft he fell into the basement. >> it's a game-changer if we see on the videotape the kind of things we see on the first floor, we'll know what happened to tim piapiazza. >> reporter: charges for 18 fraternity brothers range from manslaughter to evidence tampering, in a case highlighting the darker side of greek life. penn state is conducting its own investigation. the hearing now entering its fifth day. the defendants have denied all charges. and defense attorneys argue any new footage would show nothing more than a tragic accident. >> i'm not concerned because i suspect it will show young people having a party. >> reporter: so, this morning, four more defense attorneys get to cross-examine that detective. if they wrap it up, the judge

will rule on whether or not this will go to a full trial. >> kristen dahlgren, thank you very much. there's new fallout connected to the controversial memo questioning google's controversy examining gender relations. >> reporter: this was a sudden change. just minutes before it was scheduled to start, the ceo of google canceled an all-hands meeting, citing the safety of employees. the meeting was scheduled to address the controversy around an internal memo, written by james demore, saying women were underrespected in tech because of genter differences. he was fired for violatining google's coat of conduct. he's filed a labor complaint. and he plans to sue google now.

and alt-right groups are threatening to go after them. some google employees became concerned about openly asking questions at this town hall, given that firestorm and the event was canceled. now, the ceo says he plans to hold conversations in smaller far rums to get to the bottom of this. now, more on the shocking video. we showed you this at the top of the show. that near-disaster when a woman's car plunged seven stories to the ground. jacob rascon has that story for us. jake, what happened? >> reporter: good morning. the incident happened a couple weeks ago, but police just released the video. it happened behind me in this valley. police say a woman driving a bmw hit the gas instead of the break, narrowly missing another driver parking below in this alley. terrifying moments caught on

camera. surveillance video shows a car slamming into the ground, moments after falling from an austin, texas, parking garage. the suv driven by william binrc. >> i take it you didn't see it coming? >> no, but i heard it. >> reporter: the sedan crashing into the pavement before clipping the back end of his suv. >> i was on the speakerphone with my fam when this happened. i said, i have to go. >> reporter: the bmw same to rest on its roof. bystanders frantically kming to the aid of the driver. police believing the woman driving the bmw mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing the car to break through the barriers. almost a year ago, a similar incident happened at the same

an investigation into the odor is under way. and new video shows the moment a south carolina police officer was shot multiple times new year's day in 2017. quincy smith responding to a suspicious person call, when he spotted the suspect, who refused to comply with the officer's commands. >> i'm not playing with you. take your hands out of your pocket. take your hands out of your pocket. shots fired. >> officer smith was shot several times in both arms and the neck. he managed to run back to his vehicle where he can be heard giving a message to his family. >> tell my family i love them. officer smith survived. he has since recovered from his wounds. the shooter was convicted this week of attempted murder and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. >> takes a lot of courage to keep on going like that. now, to the latest in the taylor swift groping trial

getting attention. the pop star took the stand thursday. and she did not hold back. she described what she called a horrifying a enshocking encounter with a then-deejay. joe fryer is at the white house for us in denver. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. during her one hour of testimony, taylor swift repeated her intention again. saying that a deejay reached beneath her skirt when posing for a photo four years ago. on the stand, taylor swift had testimony more explicit than her music. it was a belong grab. he stayed latched on my bare expletive cheek. she said she was groped during this photo during a preconcert meet and greet. the picture was introduced into evidence this week. swift told the court, this is a

photo with him with his hand up my skirt. pressed on why she didn't immediately say something when the photo was taking, instead of waiting until the meet and greet was over. swift said, i couldn't have with the fans overhearing what i was saying. when mueller's attorney pointed out she could have taken a break. yes. and your client could have taken a normal photo. about 30 spectators showed up to watch her testimony. >> i have no reason not to believe her. i think she was very honest up there. seemed honest to me. >> reporter: swift never reported the allegation to police. but her rep told the station kygo. two days later, he was fired. in 2013, mueller filed a civil suit against the singer and her team, saying they cost him his career. >> we did a fair investigation into an accusation. and i don't know how you sue her for us firing you.

>> reporter: in court this week, mueller testified he never gr b groped swift or reached under her skirt, saying his closed hand touched her rib cage. saying her skirt is not ruffled. but the pop star held firm. this was not jostling. he did not touch my rib. at one point, telling mueller's attorney, i'm not going to let you or your client make me feel in any way that this is my fault. >> she was very confident in the stand. you heard about a lawyer badgering a witness. this was the first time i've seen a witness badger the lawyer. >> reporter: swift said it appeared mueller had a few c cocktails before posing for that photo. this week, mueller testified he had no alcohol before the meet and greet. this trial is scheduled to go into next week. >> keep us posted, joe. mr. roker, how about a check of the weather. >> august has started off kind of cool. not a lot of heat to talk about.

just or does it seem like we had a bunch of feel-good stories today? >> yeah. friday is feeling good. >> another morning. >> you're going to like it. this one is about a self-made maestro, conducting a hony play. >> the exact that this orchestra exist s at all is pretty miraculous. it's all the work of one man,th. moments after daryl walks into this shop and pawn, he and the

owner fall into a familiar rhythm. >> you said 65? >> the shop and pawn is a regular stop for daryl as heor tatment s s instruments. he has quite a growing collection. he refurbishes hims. this is a timpani. they can cost 1,500. he got this one for 100 bucks. >> took a power sander and sanded this down to the fiberglas. >> reporter: they put four coats of primer on it and then, gold paint for a sports car. >> of all the timpanis in the united states, ours will be the prettiest. >> reporter: they put a new head on it. then, it's off to the orchestra. daryl has his own orchestra he started in the basement of

st. james united methodist church. >> if you love music, you love kansas city. >> reporter: for daryl, the two are inseparable. he grew up here, taking pictures of all of the great high school bands during the parades. he moved to texas for two decades and returned to find many of the bands were gone. the victims of budget cuts. >> i wasn't thinking that i wanted to go to the school board and petition them to make a more robust music program. i just thought i would just roll up my sleeves and do something about it myself. some of you may have powerful minds where you can memorize music. >> reporter: daryl has a full-time job as a technical writer. in his spare time, he plays piano in churches to make money to buy instruments for his orchestra. >> over the years, i wound up with enough brass and woodwind instruments for a full brass and woodwind band. >> reporter: he has a growing

stockpile, including that new timpani. >> this is just me, buying instruments on my own. anybody that wants to give me an excuse that they can't do it, i don't want to hear it. ♪ >> reporter: daryl charges a nominal fee for the lessons and instrument rentals. it teaches the students about commitment and care for the instrument. and students say they learn a lot more than just music. >> he teaches a lot of things. history, math, science, all that stuff. and he's such a smart guy. >> everything should stop together. >> reporter: it's part of the masterpiece that daryl is composing for his community. >> whatever your talent is, it might not be music. maybe you're the best carpenter that you know. whatever your skill, your trade, gather somebody up and teach them what you know. then, you become a builder. >> there are about 14 kids in the a-flat orchestra. he's opening to have 50

who knew and loved him. we're going to miss his smile and his spirit. and overwhelming spirit. he had a passion for all things having to do with this show. and we want to honor eric with this picture. we're going to hang here in studio 1a. we'll hang it forever to remember him. we'll get a plaque made up, a more permanent plaque so we can walk past and think about our friend who we will miss incredibly. >> such a sweet man. >> he was. >> just some people that are just the fabric of -- they're the heartbeat of this place. and i think eric was one ofdore. there are a lot of tears around him. he loved this show. and he loved everybody here. we loved him. >> and we walked down the stairs here and there's an area with printers. that was kind of his hubble. he ran that place. and so, every time we walk down the shatairs -- there it is rig there, we will think of eric hill. our condolences to his family.
