supremacists and counterprotesters turn deadly. a driver used his car as a weapon driving into a crowd of antihate demonstrators that driver, james field faced a judge today. nbc news national correspondent jay gray reports from charlottesville. >> reporter: the suspect in this case, james alex field jr. has faced a judge. his arraignment here this morning. the first step in what would truly be an intense legal process here. this just a legal formality as he addressed the charges including second degree murder are now publicly by that judge. this is the city that is fractured still mourning right now. we've seen vigils through the weekend and growing memorials to the victims and 19 injuries and of course, heather heyer the 32-year-old killed when a car

slammed into the crowd of counterprotesters here. we've also heard from her mother for the first time. >> i'm very sad, i'm very, very sad, but i can't be angry because angry will make me hate and hate only leads to more hate. >> reporter: as so many in this city search for a way to honor heyer and begin the healing process there is an ongoing federal investigation and the department of justice carrying out that civil rights investigation at this point with many calling for charges of domestic terrorism or a hate crime in this case. that's the very latest from here in charlottesville, virginia, i'm jay gray, nbc news. and as you just heard heather heyer is the young woman killed during yetd's protests struck down by a car that plowed into the crowd. her mother says she is struggling to make sense of what happens. she's not angry but she does

hope her painful loss serves a greater process. >> i can't be angry because angry will make me hate and hate only leads to more hate. there's just no point to that. >> heather worked as a paralegal in charlottesville. her friends say she was not an activist but did feel strongly about issues of justice. and hundreds gathered in center city last night to support those who stood up against hate and racism in charlottesville. nbc10 was at thomas payne plaza as several speakers shared a microphone to talk about building a country that cherishes everyone. we spoke to some of the people in that crowd about why they came together. >> the white supremacist, kkk is no longer welcome here in the u.s. >> we're brothers and sisters here. we're one, we're here to speak out and stand out against any injustices that may occur across this country. >> one of the signs there in that crowd read, white

supremacist is terrorism. delaware residents also stood in solidarity with charlottesville. a crowd gathered for a peace rally at rockford park in wilmington. the senator and wilmington mayor were among many people who spoke at the vigil. local religious leaders also took part. and in the lehigh valley another clear message, hate is not welcome in allentown. rallyiers gathered there yesterday. clergy members joined the community and denouncing the violence in charlottesville and asking for everyone to unite in love. you can count on nbc10 to bring you the very latest developments after that violence in charlottesville. head to the nbc10 app for a gallery of photos from vigils that had been held around our region. bloody and beaten, a couple is found dead inside a home in south philadelphia and this morning police want to know sacramentoly how they died and

who killed them. nbc10's pamela osborn is following the investigation for us live from south philadelphia. what do we know? >> reporter: george, this is a busy area. it's not just a neighborhood street. it's about a couple of blocks up from broad where we're standing right now where all of this happened. we've been talking to the people who live in this area, who walk past this area this morning. they are all quite shocked by the discovery that was made here just before midnight. a 23-year-old woman and her boyfriend, a 50-year-old man were found dead in an apartment inside of a row home on federal street. according to police it was a relative of one of the victims that made the discovery. at some point late last night that relatives who happens to live upstairs found the couples apartment ram sacked and the pair unresponsive inside. the man and woman were found in separate rooms. police say both of them had bruises on their face. they were pronounced dead at the scene and no obvious signs of forced entry. we talked to one mother who lives just a couple of blocks

eye, she tells us the double homicide has her afraid. >> i was shooken. i don't understand because i've been living up this block for 35 years and nothing like this has ever happened and this is hitting close to home. it's scary, really scary. and i don't know. i'm at a loss of words. >> reporter: and you see as we come back out here live right now, these are relatives of one of the victims who was found inside of that apartment earlier this morning. we have a news crew over there speaking to them right now so hopefully will have that for you when we see you again at 11:30. reporting live in south philadelphia, i'm pamela osborn, nbc10 news. five people were shot in philadelphia's manhattania neighborhood. police tell us the gathering had been peaceful up to the point where the shots rang out.

one 21-year-old male suffered a graze wound to the head but no arrest. first on nbc10, a shooting in progress as our camera were rolling at another scene. this one in delaware county. we were covering the shooting of a man in chester when the new shots were fired just one block away. take a listen. frightening moments and you can hear police giving chase. our photojournalist who captured that moment left his camera on the ground while he ducked for cover. we are still working to find out the condition of the man who was shot at that first scene on logan way. >> announcer: now your nbc10 first alert weather. it is a mix of sun and

clouds down the shore today and as you can see in these live pictures, plenty of people enjoying the beach this morning. this is a live look at cape may. first alert meteorology krystal klei is here with the most accurate forecast. >> we're looking at pretty nice conditions, maybe a little kwloudier than some would like. here's our temperatures across the map. 81 degrees right now in atlantic city and 78 in wildwood. as we go inland, plenty in the upper 70s and right near 80, little cooler farther north and west, 72 for allentown and lancaster the same. 72 degrees the current reading. many of us getting into those 80s once we get to the afternoon hours. here's a look at our radar and satellite view. clouds are just spilling across our area. today is going to be a mostly cloudy day with peeks of sun here and there. if we pull this camera view out wider, look at the rain.

mostly just a light to steady rain that's moving our direction. i don't think it's going to make it to us, until we get into this evening and even into tuesday, some showers are possible but it's something we'll have our eye on. as for the rest of the day in philadelphia, we go from that 78 to 83 at 2:00 p.m. and stay around there through 5:00. nice conditions and wins that are light but the humidity is starting to tick up just a tad and as we go to the next few days we're talking hotter more humid weather in the forecast. we'll look at that more closely neighborhood by neighborhood coming up. >> thanks. authorities in mercer county have charged a man in the deadly shooting of his girlfriend inside an apartment in hamilton. prosecutors charged daniel torres junior with murder and animal cruelty among other things. police took him into custody early sunday morning after they heard a shot inside an apartment. they found torres's girlfriend jennifer beard dead on the bedroom floor, a dead dog was

also found near beer's body. meanwhile in philadelphia, police are still searching for two men who shot a woman through her bedroom window. that woman heard some commotion outside on her deck when she looked through the window to find out what it was, she saw the two men. they shot at her three times. that woman was taken to the hospital but she is expected to be okay. a 13-year-old boy is under arrest after police in delaware county say he stabbed someone in the ear. it happened around 5:00 yesterday afternoon. upper darby police responded to a large street fight at the intersection of keystone avenue and west chester pike. that is right across the street from a police station. only a few minutes later they got a all about a stabbing a few blocks away. the victim who suffered that ear wound is expected to be okay. well, it is time now for a check on the roads this monday morning with first alert traffic

reporter jessica boyington. jessica, what are you seeing out there? >> it was a really light monday so far and we're seeing that still reflected in our cameras. route 4 2i, cameras around trooper road, a good drive here even through portions of the work zone. we're not seeing huge delays. norristown watch for a crash on main street around hamilton street. and moving over into new jersey in cinnamonson there's a crash on 130 nsh. so we're seeing delays in both directions. on the northbound side and south carolina but the 42 freeway looks great. here we are moving through deptford. this is the northbound side. if you're heading down the shore to spend the day there, you'll have a good drive there. back to you. thanks. penndot has closed its island avenue driver's license center in philadelphia after a car hit that building. the center will stay closed until further notice while workers make repairs there. people who are supposed to be taking driving skills test at

the war of words between the united states and north korea continues with the u.s. now turning up pressure on china. nbc's kelly cobuy ella is in -- >> reporter: the trump administration is trying to turn up the pressure on china by introducing trade to the mix. now the white house says that the trade issue and the north korea issue are not connected, but china may not see it that way. meantime, in seoul today, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff general joseph dunford is meeting with top south korean military officials and the south korea president. the south koreans no doubt looking for reassurance that the u.s. will consult with them first before any possible military action on the korean peninsula.

we heard today for the first time from the south korean president, the u.s. and south korea are on the same page, warning north korea against making any new threats and also saying about the u.s. and south korea want the nuclear situation to be resolved peacefully. north korea also speaking out today in the form of another editorial titled, does the u.s. want its own self-destruction and also denouncing those upcoming annual military drills said to begin august 21st with the u.s. and south korea. north korea has said its plans for launching missiles toward guam will be in place by mid-month. that's just a day or two away. the question now, will kim jong-un act on them? >> announcer: now your nbc10 first alert weather. >> and today we're looking at clouds starting to take over the region. here's a view from easton,

pennsylvania. you still the bright areas of thinner spots in the clouds and even peeks of sunshine out there but we'll get this blanket affect as we go into the afternoon. so let's look at live camera that goes from easton all the way down to the shore. this is our avalon cam. this is a grayish picture. a lot of pictures are starting to turn that direction because of all the clouds moving in. our temperatures still looking pretty good. we're at 77 right now at cape may courthouse and 81 degrees in upper township. somers point and mullica township at 79 degrees. water temperature, 74. the current reading outside and what we're looking at is through the afternoon hours, the temperatures will likely hang where they are right now. winds shifting to more of an east flow and when that happens the temperatures can't warm up much more in the afternoon hours. our philadelphia neighborhoods also only going to warm up a bit more to around the low 80s. you see right now we're at 79 in

society hill and 78 at the airport location. 79 for west mt. airy and 81 degrees at fox chase. the average being 86. here's the clouds coming in from the southwest. what we have going against us that makes it harder for rain to develop is that east flow trying to push in cooler air. we've got this warmer air and moisture moving in from the southwest. that rain is going to start to make its way here mostly by this evening into tomorrow in the form of just spotty showers. we're not talking a big washout or anything. as we go through the rest of the afternoon it's mostly cloudy conditions just peeks of sun here and there. 83 in allentown. forecast high this afternoon of 84 in voorhees. just near 80 degrees like i mentioned along the jersey

shore. wilmington up to 83 degrees for our high temperature today. here's the hour by hour model. there are the cloudy conditions. this model shows a few sprinkles here. possibly. it'll be this evening that we start to see rain move in between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. some of this rain will pass through. and this is really scattered in nature but we could have periods of steadier, heavier rain in the overnight hours. we continue through to the morning tomorrow and during your commute tomorrow you may need to use the windshield wipers mostly for just spotty showers that are passing the area. any scattered showers they do continue in the afternoon as well. this is at 5:30. you see there's not a lot of rhyme or reason to the locations. spore addic across the board as that moisture comes in from the southwest. as for the feels like conditions, yesterday was lovely outside. humidity was fairly low. today it's going to be pretty low as well, so we'll just

i was showing you how family had gathered swrout side of that apartment. i can tell you now that those were cousins of the male victim. they have identified him as 50-year-old gonzalez. they say he was a single father raising a son, a couple of years ago he lost his brother at the same house, so yet another family tragedy. we've also learned it was gonzalez's mother who made that awful dover just before midnight. she lives upstairs. she went down to her son's apartment, she found he and his 23-year-old girlfriend unresponsive in their federal street apartment. she called police and when paramedics got there they pronounced them both deds. there were no signs of forced entry. both victims were bloody and bruised. their apartment had been ram sacked. the relative we spoke to didn't want to give her name but she wanted people to know about who her cousin was. >> he was a great person. i mean he was so full of life. if he could give you his socks

off his feet, he would. i mean, he just had this energy that was unbelievable. >> reporter: and those cousins have gathered beside that mother as she grieves and tries to figure out what happened. that family asking right now that anyone that may have any information give police a call. reporting live in south philly, i'm pamela osborn, nbc10 news. the men arrested in connection with the deadly car attack in charlottesville made a conviction appearance before a judge this morning. 20-year-old james fields jr. is facing one count of second degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of hit and run. he's being held without bail until his next court hearing next week. heather heyer was killed after being hit by fields' car. it all happened saturdays after rallies and count rallies turn

protest in violence to bring violence in some cases against police officers. >> mr. pence said the administration is bringing the full weight of the federal government to bear on that suspect that drove the car into the crowd there. vice president pence met resistance over donald trump's threat to use military action in venezuela. pence refused to rule out military action to revolve the growing crisis, he did tell santos the u.s. would much prefer what he called a peaceable solution. and a member of venz lay wra's ruling party may have issued a death threat against marco rubio. according to the miami herald, a security detail has been protecting rubio for the past few weeks in both washington, d.c. and in south florida.

it came from a member from the socialist party who has publicly feuded with rubio over the unrest and political turmoil in that country. >> announcer: now your nbc10 first alert weather. you can see the clouds hanging around for many of our area this morning. this is a live look outside at the sky line in downtown wilmington. nbc10 first alert meteorologist krystal klei is here with your most accurate forecast. >> we're looking at right now is that radar and satellite view. the satellite overlays the gray you see and you can see the clear movement is from the southwest. that's actually ahead a good deal of moisture that you see and rain starting to pass through areas like west virginia and parts of virginia. this is moving our direction. i think a lot of this is going to fizzle a bit as it heads our way. we are looking at a chance for some rain and into tomorrow as well. mostly cloudy conditions will prevail across the area. here's why i think some of the

rain moving not guilty our direction will fizzle a bit. we have this east wind flow, not very strong, about three to five miles per hour when you got that east push of cooler air running into some of the warmer moist air, it'll calm down any rain heading our direction. nonetheless, we will see those chances of showers into tonight and tomorrow. that's the focus we're looking at. we're tracking warming conditions. temperatures that will start moving into the 90s. you can take a peek at the bottom of your screen there. on top of that, it will be more humid as this happens so we're talking steamy conditions returning after what seemed like several weeks where we didn't have to worry about that. back to a more summer-like trend for the next several days. then we talk thunderstorms. we'll get to all of that with a look at your ten day on ten in a few minutes. >> lots to track. new video out of texas shows how firefighters rescued a woman from a collapsed house. the woman and a man were in the

mother in law suite of a dallas area home when it partially collapsed. the man was able to get out but firefighters needed to prop up the suite with a large pole to get the woman to safety. everyone is going to be okay. heavy rain overnight fell on that area but it is not entirely clear if that collapse is, in fact, weather related. willie nelson had to cut a performance short near salt lake city. he was having breathing problems and he said the altitude was bothering him. nelson took to twitter to address his fans after the concert. he said i'm feeling a lot better now and i'm headed for lower ground. well just a week from today, a total solar eclipse will be visible from a narrow stretch of land all the way across the united states from oregon to south carolina. look for people to swamp some often overlooked areas to get the very best view. 12 million people live along that path where telt coverage is

expected and around 7 million are expected to pack into the path to get a view. for those who don't know a total eclipse is when the moon passes directly in the path of the sun. there hasn't been one visible from the contin giggus 48 states in nearly four decades. there are two generations of americans who have heard about them but never had a chance to witness it. >> what's rare about a solar eclipse is where it's happening on the planet. so for example, for philadelphia, the last time there was a total solar eclipse that occurred right over philadelphia, 1478. and the next time a total solar eclipse will happen right in philadelphia, 2079. don't be completely discoura discouraged. you will see be able to see a partial eclipse from the philadelphia area. the moon should cover about 80% of the sun. however we won't see that dramatic darkening as seen in some other places.

satellite view and i'm doing the wide view here, the gray you see is the cloud cover. just covered our area now. you look farther to the southwest and that is a good deal of rain that's moving through parts of west virginia that is moving our way so what's going to happen here is as it gets our direction we're going to start to see it break down a bit but we will have the chance of scattered showers tonight and especially into tomorrow. here's the hour by hour. here's the clouds we have and there's 1:00 in the afternoon, model giving us just a few sprinkles out there. for the most part not much making it to the ground yet, just the clouds overhead. as we get into the evening, now we've got scattered showers moving in from the west. those continue to move across the board. this model in particular wants to give us heavier rain. i think it's going to be a bit more scattered in nature but we may see some overnight rain leading to morning rain for your commute tomorrow. this is 8:30 a.m. it's very spotty in nature and these scattered showers continue into the afternoon, a little action right down south jersey and parts of delaware through

6:00 p.m. as we go late tuesday into wednesday, we should start to ring some of that out but we are hot and humid bience with. today low mid-80s across our philadelphia neighborhoods and mostly cloudy. tomorrow, the showers with a temperature of 86, higher humidity and the temperature warmer and there you go. wednesday, 90 partly cloudy but very humid, so not the most comfortable of conditions. we get to 86 by wednesday and some showers tomorrow. spot showers as well in the lehigh valley. a temperature of 83. 84 in new jersey and 79 today at the shore. delaware at 83 and mostly cloudy. we'll get a chance of showers tomorrow but spotty in nature and wednesday just hot humid conditions throughout the entire region. ten daily on ten with a chance of humid wednesday up to 90 degrees. there it is chances of scattered thunderstorms thursday, friday, thursday that includes for the eagles game possibly some storms

moving through and if we fast-forward to monday that's a look right now at the solar eclipse, not the best. that california dream turns into obsession for a young woman who is hooked on social media and ends up befriendsing someone who she stalked on instagram. we're talking about a new film called "ingrid goes west," it one best spring play at film fest vl and definitely thrilled to have the director and cowriter here this morning. matt spicer, you're a native of hatboro. >> yes. >> you grew up in this area and it's your first feature film. >> it's my first at director. i produced a feature film a few years ago. >> tell us -- we summarized the plot. this is a film for the social media age. what inspired you to make

"ingrid goes west." >> living in l.a. people are working on building their brand. it's just part of the culture. i love instagram. i'm on it a lot. it brings up negative feelings from time to time and i think we, dave and i, we wanted to find a character who we could pure all of our positive and negative feelings in to it. >> it's focused around this woman who essentially started wants to be wanted, she becomes obsessed with someone, she only knows originally through social media in the beginning. and so we see that power of social media. you're saying a lot of it had to have been kind of based on what you saw in your own real life experiences, right? >> yeah. you see a lot of these images that you see on line, they're very seductive and when you peer behind the curtain, it's all a mirage. i think ingrid gets caught up in this what looks like someone's perfect life and thinks i want to be just like them and when she gets out there she realizes

it's different than what she thought. >> darker behind the veil. >> it follows this notion of people's highly curated lives that are put out on social media, even though the reality is often really messier for a lot of people. >> they're picking and choosing what to show people and leaving out the bad stuff. >> everything that's tough. >> whether you think there are a lot of ingrid's out there, a lot of people who are following it as closely as your character is? >> i hope not. ingrid's not meant to be a role model. so if you are like ingrid, yeah, i would definitely recommend talking to somebody, but i think part of it is we want the film to be a mirror for people to see the parts of themselves that are like her and say, well, maybe, i shouldn't do that. hopefully you're not completely like ingrid. >> absolutely. it seems like it's one of those movies that it's still of this moment as we're just learning

how to integrate social media into our daily lives, right? >> it's very timely. i think we're not sure when we wrote it two years ago if it would still be timely but i feel like it's more relevant than ever. >> very cool movie. i know a lot of people are going to want to check out. we're very grateful to have you with us.
