boyce in boston one week after deadly clashes in virginia. murals of faith, vandals find another target as the debate over the statute continues. clearing the shelters, more than 1,000 pets found a forever home today. right now at 6:00 the second week of dueling protest in boston. a small group of conservatives cut the planned free speech rally when they were met by 40,000 counter protesters. good evening this comes after a gathering of hate groups led to bloodshed in virginia.

police made more than two dozen arrests there and chris has more on the developing story. >> reporter: in boston, thousands on the march spreading a message of unity and equality. >> love, not hatred. >> reporter: a response to the demonstrations planed to drown out a rally not far away on boston common. organizers called that a free speech rally but would attract hate groups. >> i was thinking that we should show up to let the protesters of the free speech rally know they are in the minority. >> reporter: it attracted less than 100 people and broke up in less than an hour. >> spread a narrative that where white national neo nads szi tha ridiculo ridiculous. >> reporter: police led the free speech group off the police wagon and on foot. nbc boston jonathan was in the

middle of it. >> two trump supporters escorted out. here we go. are you okay? what's your name. >> reporter: with the free speech group gone, counter protesters burned a confederate battle flag on the steps of the state house. president trump said looks like many anti police. >> 99.9% of the people here are here for the right reason to fight bigotry and hate for the most part today. >> reporter: some were members on anti groups. tonight in philadelphia, controversy continues over former mayor and police commissioner frank rizzo. vandals splashed paint on this mural in the italian market overnight. nbc 10 andrea joins us with more on the latest display on vandal

li -- vand vandalism. >> the paint remains but the graffiti that includes anti police sentiments has since been removed. residents say opposing the former mayor and police commissioner is one thing but vandalizing property is taking it too far. residents came by with cameras to take pictures of the now defaced mural of frank rizzo. known for his tough talk and heavy-handed approach, this week the legacy of the mayor and police commissioner is called into question. first the statute in center city and the mural in the italian market have been the target of vandals. >> polarizing but i don't understand today when these young people know. >> reporter: over night police arrested one man. they say a group spray painted over david jones killed this

summer. next to that anti police sentiments. >> he was a very tough mayor. he's very conservative. a lot of people didn't like him. i felt safe when he was the mayor. i did. >> reporter: four decades later, frank rizzo remains a polarizing figure in philadelphia's history. some say there needs to be discussions how he's i'm mo immortalized. >> it's time to visit why this is is useful. that's something the community should decide, not someone with a bag of paint and spray cans. >> reporter: the executive director of the program agrees that now is the time to have a discussion about the future of this mural, especially since it's been vandalized in the past. in response to all of this, a rally has been planned for monday in support of frank rizzo. reporting live, andrea kline thomas. >> we caught up with mile ph

philadelphia city councilman where 31st street was named after lillian ray. philadelphia's first african american drug czar and whether the statute should stay or go. >> you know, personally for me, i think there are greater issues we need to be addressing right now. we need to address the issue of justification of portable housing and addressing the issue of young people murdering one another with guns in the streets. >> he said any effort to remove the rizzo statute would be a long process. now to the latest on the terror in spain. tonight a massive search continues for the driver of the van that slammed into a crowd of people on thursday. now this is the man police are looking for. spanish media is naming him as the suspected driver in the attack. police are not confirming that, though. meanwhile, police searched the apartment of the supposed

ringleader in thursday east's t a tack. 18 people died in the barcelona attack. hundreds more hurt. hours later, one person was killed where a car crashed into pedestrians there. also today, balloons were released at a memorial for the victims in barcelona. thousands of people clapped as balloons were released and people applauded police officers guarding the memorial. people have been laying flowers, candles and messages at the site. iris delgado from telemundo 62 is in barcelona with an update on the terror attack. >> reporter: it's been well over 48 hours since the terrorist attack in spain where the threat level remains at a four. five is the highest where an attack is imminent. still, though, as you can see, lots of people coming out to show their support tonight. earlier, we witnessed a rally by

temperatures for today, topped out at 88 degrees in philadelphia and plenty of sunshine as you can see right behind me. currently we're seeing loats of 80s and 82 and 87. a quick look at your planner for tonight into tomorrow. mostly clear skies through tomorrow but of course, you have to be mindful your beach forecast is coming up in just a bit. will have more information about rip currents. back to you. today they came by the hundreds to clear the shelters. adoption fees are being waived at 50 shelters across the area and taking advantage of it. since the campaign kicked off the last weekend of july, more than 4300 pets have been adopted. more than 1,000 today alone. nbc 10's keith jones in westchester talked to one family about why this day is so special

duke university removed a statute of robert e. lee before dawn this morning. the university released photos where the statute once stood at the entrance to the chapel. it had been there for more than 85 years. speeches interrupted by shouting at a prayer vigil in north carolina. the local nncp was paying tribute to heather heyer killed by violence last week. supporters of the confederate monument formed a circle and police at one point formed a barrier. >> president trump says he won't

be attempting the ken th kennedr honors after honorees said they would boycott. he wants it to happen without political distraction. two pennsylvania state troopers are recovering after being shot last night. they were just two of six officers shot in two states within a matter of hours. two police officers were shot in florida not far from orlando. one officer died last night and another died this afternoon. two officers were also shot in a shootout in jacksonville, florida. they are recovering and just outside of pittsburgh, two troopers were shot in a grocery store parking lot. one of the troopers remains in critical condition. catching a glimpse of history, how excitement is building in anticipation of monday's solar eclipse. >> great segway for the weather. skies clear for tonight and tomorrow but will that be the case on monday for that solar

the rip current always possible and that's because if you are swimming near a jetty, you might not realize that it certainly could affect you and bring you in deeper into the ocean. be mindful of that. download the app for more information and we'll keep you updated. current temperatures certainly tempting enough to go towards the beach. we're seeing lots of mid to upper 80s. wild wood at 80. atlantic city 86 for you. 87 in philadelphia. we topped out at 88 degrees and cool mount 86. satellite and radar image, we're not seeing here much in the viewing area but just to the west, we're seeing strong storms moving through and i do think we'll see a few storms especially likely for burkes county, chester county and lee high valley in a couple hours. download the app and follow us on social media at nbc philadelphia for more updates on that. let's go ahead and time out hour

hey, good to see you again. danny pommells with you once more. the victory over the bills, a game you saw on nbc 10. the official station of the philadelphia eagles. impressive outing for one ronald c darby. secondary coach says his night should have been more impressive. >> he knows football. he knows coverages. he knows the play. it's just different verbiage. i would have liked to see him snatch the first ball. he should have made that one. you don't get many of those opportunities so i would love to have seen him make that play in the end zone. that would have been nice. >> as for the offense, the running game faltered again and carson wentz was unable to get into a consistent rhythm

finishing 6-9. 5 of 9 went to the new favorite target jeffreys connected twice with the rest of the offense sputtering for the coach. john says progress has been made this off season. >> the difference is number one i think a year in the offense is given our guys a lot of confidence on the outside a. year of strength, you see nelson aguilar playing more confident. obvio obviously, he's always had a ton of speed. i think you see the confidence catching the ball and you see him having a big catching radius and tory taking the top of coverage. when you have the factors, it opens up the middle of the field for zack and trey burten and whenever you have weapons on the outside, it opens up the middle of the field for backs and tight ends. >> for the bird's front office, an interesting topic, another summer of big splashes for howie roseman at running back, cornerback and wide receiver.

john clark spoke one on one with the gm about one of those moves. the trade of jordan mathews for ronald darby and what he likes best about the new cornerback. >> no doubt. he can run for sure. you see the competitiveness, his ability to make plays on the ball. he's got quick twitch. he can change direction. so we're excited to add him to the corner group and really for the first time in a long time have a long list of young corners we're excited to see develop. >> obviously to get him you have to trade jordan matthews and a tough deal to make. what was it about the other receivers on the team that led you to be available to make the trade? >> yeah, to get a corner at this point of time in the year, we knew we had to give a lot. we had this conversation internally if we make a trade, whoever it would be would hurt us to make the trade. talk about jordan, the production he had as a philadelphia eagle. we tried other ways to do the trade but couldn't get this done without giving up jordan
