across the country. >> and spread out our team on key locations along the way with everything you need to know. we begin with nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer camped out with thousands of his closest friends in oregon. miguel, what's it look like there? >> reporter: it's incredible here. expecting the eclipse to begin in six hours. and this area is perfect for viewing the eclipse, clear skies and we are the furthest west where this will be one of the first american cities to go dark as that solar eclipse goes from west to east. we're expecting to be in the dark here for about two minutes. as you mentioned, there are a lot of folks out here. it's typically of town of 2,000. today over 100,000 people who began camping early thursday and have been here over the last several days. they call this area solar town.

there are camps, rvs and tents as far as the eye can see. some people are paying upwards of $1,500 to camp out here all for that perfect spot. it could be the best place in the world to see the solar eclipse. lines are getting longer and longer. we're expecting about two minutes of darkness. the sky here should plunge into darkness around 10:19 in the morning. we are told by astronomers it's going to be a spectacular show. something they will never, ever forget. because of that folks are coming from around the globe right here guys. >> miguel, very cool. thanks. heading 2,000 miles to the east to carbondale, illinois. the town in the dark the longest. nbc's kerry sanders is in position at the stadium on the campus of southern illinois university. kerry, no football, but a lot of show this morning? >> reporter: it's game day. right? look, this stadium is going to fill up with 15,000 people, and when you consider the excitement and the mania, they actually

along the path of totality, south carolina. nbc's tom costello is getting ready in mount pleasant on the deck of the "uss yorktown." tom good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we're in charleston harbor and got a little lightning and rain. asking al quickly, will this clear out? we are expecting total darkness at about 2:46 p.m. eastern time. it's going to last anywhere from a minute and a half to two minutes. it is just now a few hours away until showtime. it may be the most anticipated sola arar event in history but traffic jam. millions rushing to get the best view. 5 million people flooded into south carolina. the last state to fade to black this afternoon. historic charleston sold out for months. >> how many people are in this town? >> the city's packed. really is packed. i will tell you we're 100% occupied. >> no rain date? >> no rain date.

absolutely. people will come no matter what. >> reporter: at charleston's city market, chasers from across the country. >> unusual. >> unusual phenomenon. >> and we'll remember it the rest of our lives t. is a communal experience, to be in this unbelievable moment in time, with everybody else, experiencing this moment. i think that, gives me goose bumps. >> reporter: nasa says the eclipse moves across the country at about 1,500 miles per hour. the so-called path of totality 70 miles wide. for most total darkness lasting 2 to 2 1/2 minutes. >> at that minute, a bright flash. the last bit of the bright sun, and you will see the faint outer atmosphere of the corona creating a ring. >> reporter: again this morning, ophthalmologists are urging people not to look at the sun without the special equipped sunglasses. >> gazing at the sun without safe filters can burn a hole in

unfortunately, showers around. we'll take a look at the forecast going coast to coast. start in the pacific northwest, where it will be best. from newport, iowa, casper, wyoming, great weather. the midsection of the country. when this starts out, traveling at almost 3,000 miles per hour, then slows down to its slowest point right around carbondale, illinois. clouding up unfortunately for kerry and his friends. and further to the east, going to see nashville looking great. hot and humid. greenville, south carolina, some clouds. the closer you get to the coast, looking for a chance of thunderstorms here in charleston, totality as 2:46 p.m. eastern daylight time. the a lot of solary radiation starting at 12:45. the lighters the less the solar radiation. as the path comes across, seeing temperatures drop anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees, and for all of the solar plants out there, we

eclipse. >> that's okay. better than nothing. right? we're going to talk more about that as the morning goes on. get to your news at 8:00. breaking overnight, navy officials say the ""uss john s. mccain" arrived at a naval base with significant damage to its hull. we have the latest with bill neely. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. good morning, everyone. the seas around singapore in darkness now but the search for the ten missing sailors intense by air and on the water. so, too, is the search for answers. how on earth could this happen to one of the world's most sophisticated warships? especially since it's not the first time. a gaping hole in its water line, american sailors lining the deck. the guided missile destroyer, the "uss john s. mccain" is badly damaged. in the waters nearby, an intense

search operation for ten missing sailors. the battleship moving here under its own power, but the navy says only action by the crew stopped further flooding. it was hit by this oil tanker, the alnic mc, flying under a liberian flag as well as ten missing, five u.s. sailors were injured, though none has life-threatening injuries. the destroyer was heading for a routine stop in singapore. so was the tanker full of oil in the narrow strait. just before dawn they collided. the much heavier tanker holing the warship on the left port side. in a statement, the navy said, the significant damage resulted in flooding to nearby compartments including crew berthing, machinery and communications rooms. returning to the white house, president trump's first response to the tragedy. >> it's too bad. >> reporter: later tweeting, thoughts and prayers are with our u.s. navy sailors aboard the

usa "uss john s. mccain." the destroyer sistership, the "uss fitzgerald" was hit by a container ship in june. seven sailors died. the commanding officer and other senior crew relieved of their duties. the cause of this latest collision is unknown. the ship now being examined in port. the search area is huge. more than 100 square miles, ships, aircraft and helicopters from four countries joining that search. the "uss john s. mccain" is now in port in singapore. one of the injured sailors onboard told the associated press he was sleeping at the time, and isn't sure how on earning it happ earth it happened. a tragedy and mystery. >> certainly is. bill kneey on the story. thank you very much. and president trump in a

a lot of variables weigh into this. give you a couple last pointers about wearing these special eclipse shades. if you are going to be looking up at the sun to watch the eclipse they say, first look down, put on the shades and then look up. because you don't want to be looking up and putting on the shades. they made this point repeatedly you can seriously damage your retina if you look at the sun. so you've got to wear the eclipse shades. coast to coast, this entire event will draw tens of millions of people, maybe even in excess of 100 million, who will be in the zone or close to the zone and watching the eclipse come across the country, oregon down here to charleston, south carolina and it heads out to sea. by the way, aaa reminding people, be careful if you're driving. keep your eyes on the road. watch out for somebody else not keeping their eyes on the road and boaters, practice safe boating especially during those dark few minutes. guise, back to you. >> all good advice. tom, thank you very much.

aren't familiar with them. talk about them. >> this is basically a classic world-famous barbecue. have you had this before? >> yes, i have. >> great. you're about to taste some deliciousness going on. vegetable oil, sesame oil which is fine. soy sauce, white rice. this is classic korean barbecue sauce. if you can't find this, buy it, or make it with the recipe online or substitute your favorite hoss sauce. >> asian -- >> if you can't find that, anything that's hard enough to grate. and fragrant. any lettuce leaf that you want. and good to substitute something herby, a bit of spiceness. >> using substitutes for the things you mind not be able to find, we're give that to you online. make the marinade. >> starting with an asian pear. going to grate this just like this. >> juicy. look at that. >> very juicy. use all of that juice and all of those bits to the put into your

marinade. this adds flavor and sweetness and acts as a tenderizer. all of that making your meat nice and buttery and soft. and delicious. now, can you whisk? >> sure. absolutely. >> and whisk in your repertoire. >> in there, used to a rounder bowl. that's okay. >> going off piece with you. and jazz up your -- your skills. >> my repertoire. >> brown sugar, sesame sauce, ginger, garlic. good flavor. >> how far in advance would you marinate the meat? >> two hours in advance and up to overnight. salt and pepper. not too long, though, because of the pear. the enzymes will break things down eventually. nut your short ribs. use any kind of meat. this is nicely, thinly sliced. it toox quicooks quickly. skirt steak. >> flip it over? >> do it in a plastic bag and massage it in there, if you want to. >> and this is what's it looks like after its been marinated. >>
