philadelphia, or you couldn't track down the glasses, here is what you missed. you can see the sun was never completely blocked by the moon but it was still significantly covered. good evening. >> 2:44. that was the time our area saw maximum impact of the solar eclipse today. we all put on the glasses to look for ourselves. >> it is so great. >> that's the reaction of people at penn's landing. they showed up the protective glasses. >> thousands of sky gazers showed up at mt. joy observatory. look at that line of people. >> amazing. >> kim furlong was there for the historic event. looked like you had the hottest ticket in town. >> reporter: it really was. i hope everybody was just as impressed. this piece of kent county and

this facility right here were the perfect place to all get together to share this experience. >> see how long that line is? we were lucky. >> reporter: organizers admit they didn't expect this kind of turnout. they went through the 600 glasses in a flash. >> why do you think we're all sort of so intrigued by this? >> it only happens from, you know, once in a lifetime most people. that's why. >> reporter: they had games, moon bounces and foot trucks and the big star was the sun and how it was playing peekaboo behind the moon. >> it's the best to get. it would have been great to see it in totality. this is a unique experience. >> that's crazy. >> reporter: everyone was impressed with the show in the sky. >> better than i expected. >> reporter: some said they expected it to be darker but everyone agreed it was an amazing to see and in our times in our country, it was great to have a shared experience. >> really cool to be able to do something that everybody's doing at the same time and all

watching it. you know? >> reporter: for the folks here in smyrna, they think it helped them recruit the next generation of astronomers and rocket si scientists. >> they're getting an exposure to the earth in the universe and that's what we're all about. >> reporter: this telescope is amazing. lots of camps and if your kids thought this was cool today and learn about space and go to the facebook page and if anybody's looking for a deal on s sunglasses, i can cut you a break. the rules of supply and demand in effect. they're worthless until 2024. guys? >> on the glasses, apparently there's an expiration date on these. in three years. so i guess they're no good in 2024. >> come on! >> at least that's what it says here. >> reporter: keep that our secret. we'll figure it out and get somebody to buy them. >> tim furlong for us in smyrna, thank you.

a stand still awe inspiring moment. pretty much standing room only as crowds came together to witness the solar eclipse along the ben franklin parkway. some skipped work. others celebrated their birthdays. >> i have never seen a solar eclipse before. >> it was really cool, like, to see it be covered and just like see all the space of it. and then when it was -- when the moon was like moving again, it was so cool to see it like just -- it was just really cool. i don't know. i loved it. >> inside the fels planetarium, thousands enjoyed a front row seat with nasa's live stream. >> seems like everyone stopped what they were doing to watch the eclipse today, even the staff at the white house. vice president mike pence, attorney general sessions and ivanka trump could be seen checking out the suspect kl in the sky. here at home, we weren't in the path of totality. >> no. but we got a pretty good

spectacle. meteorologi meteorologistkrystal klye explains what crossed the path. >> reporter: i'm here at westchester university and people were here looking at a viewing party and everyone still seemed happy and some disappointed it wasn't completely dark. look at the ground. what you see on the shadow is very dark shadow and along the edge, say holding out a piece of paper, it is fuzzier along the edge. we were right on the edge of the eclipse today and why we didn't see the total darkout for the total eclipse that some experienced. take a lock at the video we have for you guys. this shows the entire nation. the path of totality, the areas that saw the total eclipse, that hit 14 states across the u.s. first total eclipse hitting right around 1:20 in oregon. the last hitting what w a total eclipse around 2:40. everything wrapped up right around 4:00 p.m. today, even for

us here. now, let's jump to the next graphic and going to explain for you guys what you are seeing here. for a total eclipse, you need a couple of things. first thing, that's the sun, the moon and the earth to all line up perfectly and takes quite sometime to happen. on top of that, you need something that's amazing. the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun and 400 times closer than the sun than the earth is and that's why that very small area the path of totality. that's the part of the shadow that's the umbra. for us, we're in the penumbra. today we saw 75% of the sun obscured by the moon. still pretty impressive. i have so ai really enjoyed it. people who were here earlier at westchester university said the same thing to me. back the you guys. >> excellent. great coverage out there. thank you. nbc 10's coverage of the

and this is at avalon. little sun, even an hour ago. and we kept the clouds away for most of the area. for the eclipse. that would be pretty frustrating to have the clouds block you. well, got a couple of showers near harrisburg. trying to get eastward and not making a lot of progress. there's one big cluster of storms now over chesapeake bay. it was near baltimore and nearly stationary and then that's moving to the southeast and they may not even get into delaware but it's really messing up maryland. the storms are stationary and causing flooding there. we have a couple of issues for tomorrow. first thing, first alert, for the heat and humidity combination, from philadelphia southward, does not include the beaches because it's a sea breeze tomorrow. that's from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. temperatures into the mid-90s. the feels like temperature when

you add that high humidity, 100 to 105. northern portions of our area, they're closer to the severe thunderstorms that are likely to hit central and western pennsylvania late tomorrow. that's why i have the first alert out there from 8:00 p.m. tuesday to 2:00 a.m. wednesday. so that's later in the night, of course. and the later you go at night, the more likely to weaken. budajing winds still possible especially north and west. taking a live look now at the frank rizzo statue. people ga gathering. there were supposed to be duelling rallies today but the people pro rizzo called theirs off to talk to the city. the statue of the former philadelphia mayor and police commissioner vandalized a few times since last week. some saying rizzo represents a bad era in the city. new strategy in afghanistan. tonight, president trump will

address the nation setting out his vision for the future of the nation's longest war. nbc 10 national correspondent blain alexander has more from the white house. >> reporter: what is next for america's longest war? tonight, president trump set to announce a path forward for the war in afghanistan. on the campaign trail, then candidate trump called the war a waste of money. >> we could have rebuilt our country twice. that have produced more terrorism, more death, more suffering. >> reporter: now, president trump expected to announce a plan to send more troops into afghanistan. as many as 4,000. the decision coming after a weekend huddle with top advisers and what his team called a rigorous review. >> once he announces what the strategy is, we can get more precise on afghanistan, troop levels, what we are going to do. >> reporter: right now, more than 8,400 u.s. troops in afghanistan. since the war began, more than 2,300 american military personnel have been killed.

yet, the country continues to be a safe haven for terrorists. the taliban stronghold continuing to grow. >> i think what you are going to see tonight is as good as it will get and ought to keep us in roughly stable flight so we don't see the entire graphic turn red as the taliban continue their gains. >> reporter: president trump considering the best way forward in a war that has now spanned three presidencies. blain alexander, nbc news, washington. "nbc nightly news with lester holt" with more coverage of the address tonight at 6:30 right here on nbc 10. and delaware county, some big money awarded to local first responders, more than $285,000 in grant money to the fire and protective association officials. the money prothe department of homeland security will be handed out over three years and cover 75% of the costs for firefighters staff. today the philadelphia police department has a new person in charge of improving

relations with the community. today, hans menos appointed as director for the police advisory commission. menos says there's a strained relationship of officers and the communities they serve and he'll work every day to improve that relationship. menos takes over in october. police in del care county investigating an atv crash that killed two riders and happened near the intersection of 10th in chester. see the four-wheeled atvs. a tractor trailer flipped on to its side after hitting a bridge in fair mont park this morning. the accident at martin luther king drive at the schuylkill trail. three cranes were needed to clear that scene. tonight, three teens are facing charges after attacking another teenager while he was walking to a park. it happened saturday night. the 16-year-old victim was walking to south mountain park when he said one of the

right now, widespread search operation is under way for ten sailors. "uss john mccain" was hit by an oil tanker just before dawn yesterday as it headed for a routine stop in singapore. along with the ten missing, five sailors are hurt. it's the second such accident in as many months for the u.s. navy. mattis said the navy is launching a broad investigation. to the terror in spain and major developments today. police shot and killed the driver of the van from thursday's deadly attack in

during the day tomorrow, it's just going to see the heat and humidity build up. remember, today, the temperature was blocked for a couple of hours by that eclipse so the temperature actually went down when it normally goes up during the day. so, tomorrow, with the extreme heat, and the humidity, this is from philadelphia southward. except for the beaches. which will see a sea breeze. 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. temperatures in the mid-90s. the high humidity makes it feel like 100 to 105. we have another first alert for different part of the area, these are for pennsylvania counties and this is 8:00 p.m. tuesday to 2:00 a.m. wednesday. by the time the line of thunderstorms gets into south jersey and delaware, it may have weakened so much that it's not severe. so damaging winds possible. a lot of lightning and some small hail. right now, temperatures are in the mid-80s. we have a little more sunshine, philadelphia now than we did an hour ago. a lot of sun in the lehigh valley that we have seen in the

day today. and that is helped push the temperatures up. and lehigh valley to get to 90 or a little bit above tomorrow and not into the dangerous levels. warnerville 79. white hall 85. bethlehem 84, as well as easton. like i said, all the places are going to be close to 90 or maybe a little bit above tomorrow. feels like temperature's 91 in wilmington. 90 in vineland. 87 in philadelphia. so we're certainly nowhere near the dangerous levels today. tomorrow, it is a different story. look at these feels like temperatures. 2:00, 4:00, getting close to 100. maybe in between it could hit the triple dpiigits there. not as high. that's why i don't have the first alert out for those counties. this is what we do with neighborhood weather. we break it down into the different areas of different

impanlgts. delaware, feels like temperature getting to 100 for several hours tomorrow. parts of south jersey getting near 100, as well. but the jersey shore, not getting there. not in that first alert. we have a couple of showers trying to get into berks county and near the poconos and that is weakening already. not moving very fast. we have more activity become out to the west. in ohio and even across the middle of the country. and that's associated with a cold front that's coming in. these are the showers for this evening. just kind of isolated. and not necessarily severe. but watch what happens during the day tomorrow. we start off with a sunshine, the heat, humidity builds. plus we have a cold front coming through. so, that could be some pretty strong thunderstorms and that is later at night. so most of the daytime hours we are talking about dry weather. and then, we really dry out. lots of sunshine as you can see.

we have new details right now out of ohio where a judge was shot outside a courthouse. police say the gunman was the father of a high school football player convicted of rape back in 2013. the judge was shot this morning in the town of stubenville. you may remember the story, it made national headlines when two high school football players convicted of raping a girl during a party. the gunman's son served ten months in juvenile prison. the gunman was eventually shot and killed by a probation

officer. in pennsylvania, 30-year-old bald eagle being treated for lead poisoning has died. less than two weeks after two others died out same cause and captured last weekend after allowing people to get unusually close. local educators are getting a lesson in wellness ahead of the school year and teachers are taking part in a two-day healthy bodies, healthy minds seminar. it's designed to teach them how to incorporate movement and other healthy activities into the classroom. well, as we know, it is no fun being stuck on the tarmac for hours. how one group is trying to ease frustrations over the flight cancelations. a viewer in new jersey lost his patience. why you should take a closer look at the warranty even if it's expired. a wedding and a solar eclipse. definitely a day to remember for this couple. we continue the coverage just

wow. eclipse excitement. tonight, a lot of buzz around one of mother nature's most talked about celestial evens. we have got you covered. we have a round-up of some of the best pictures of coast to coast like here at a packed stadium at southern illinois university. and four generations of bush family including two former presidents were sky gazers today. photo posted on former president h.w. bush's twitter page. the former president tweeted, he is already looking forward to the next e cliclipse in texas i 2024. >> congratulations! congratulations! >> total eclipse of the heart maybe. a wedding at a solar eclipse made the day special for a couple of in oregon tying the knot at the moment of full eclipse. the ring of light behind the moon. michael slipped a ring on the finger and it was official.

romantic. we continue team coverage of all the excitement. south carolina, the last area to see the solar eclipse in the u.s. krystal breaks down the history and when the next one will happen. >> erica, what did you think of the eclipse? >> reporter: well, i'm absolutely speechless right now, keith. it was the day that scientists here have been waiting for. it did not disappoint. it was two minutes and 37 seconds of pure magic. everything that the astronomers said came true. there was sort of an eerie green twilight right before totality. people started to get excited here and an estimated maybe 50,000 people here on campus. it was packed behind me and then totality hit. and oh. it was just amazing. you saw that beautiful solar corona behind the sun or behind the moon i should say. everyone started to point out and couldn't figure out what

they were pointing at. it was venus. everything got much darker, not middle of the night dark but pretty dark and it was absolutely amazing. people earlier were talking about how great it was that they could come together and not talk about things like tragedies or things that divide us. they were here all on the same page, everything brought -- what brought us together today was the great american total eclipse. ish say they're still together out on the highways. 50,000 people left right after totality finished and talked to highway patrol. they have been out stuck out there for a little while. that's all from here. thank you, guys. >> the country unified and looking up. erika edwards live in south carolina, thank you. people turned out in huge crowds to see this event. the celestial phenomenon is blowing up on social media, too. many people disappointed they couldn't see the total eclipse here in the area.

nbc 10 krystal klei joins us live. the next one is seven years from now? >> caller: yeah. that's right. let's talk a little bit about history and what we are looking forward to in the future. if you are a little disappointed you didn't see the total eclipse here in philadelphia, no worries. wait around a while and we will have one. let's go over the dates and the last solar eclipse, that was in february of 1979. the last coast to coast solar eclipse, a great american eclipse, that was almost 100 years ago. back in june of 1918. so this is really a once in a lifetime event we experienced here in america today. now let's pop up the map we have. the map itself might be chaotic seeing it with the yellow lines across the country and guide you through this. first off, the next solar eclipse throughout the united states. that's april 2024. like keith said. that goes from texas up to maine so you see that line there. that's april of 2024.

"nightly news" has coverage from oregon to south carolina tonight at 6:30. a philadelphia police sergeant in north philadelphia shot a man armed with a stolen gun. the sergeant and other officers patrolling north philadelphia. the sergeant told the man to drop the gun. police say the man ran into an alley and the sergeant chased him. that's when the sergeant said the man pointed the gun at him. he fired four shots and hit him twice. the man is still in the hospital. septa police are trying to track down this woman. she dropped an envelope containing valuable items and they wont the return it to her. if you know who she is, contact police. here's a look at the stories making headlines county county across the region today. the bill cosby case returns to a montgomery county courtroom tomorrow. he hired new lawyers. they include the lawyer who won

an acquittal for michael jackson during his 2005 child molestation trial. cosby tweeted about his new legal team today. including jackson's former attorney, kathleen bliss and prominent pennsylvania attorney sam silver who represented former congressman fatah. tomorrow nbc 10 had you covered inside and outside of the courtroom. tonight in camden county, skyforce 10 over the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident. it happened around 2:30 this afternoon on route 30. the driver was found dead at the scene. officials shut down that part of the highway while they cleared that scene. we're still trying to figure out how the crash happened. a camden man indicted in connection with a record setting seizure of 31 pounds of fentanyl. he was arrested following a joint investigation of state police and homeland security. the investigation revealed packages containing fentanyl

john, what did he say? chris long is the first white player in the nfl to join in on the protests during the national anthem and now other white players are following his lead. thursday night, before the eagles second preseason game, chris long here puts his arm around jenkins in the national anthem to show support to malcolm's protest. friday night, seahawks center brit with an arm around bennett as bennett kneeling in the anthem and raiders quarterback carr saturday night he did the same thing. here's chris long today an he says it's about understanding the perspective of others and what they go through. >> it's not about my part in it. it's really just about everybody's part in it and like i said, the gesture can mean a lot of different things. i know what it means for me. i think at the end of the day we can't lose if we try to get closer the each other and really just listen. i think that's what the protests have turned into.

by hour forecast. glenn? >> big changes coming tomorrow and more significant weather coming tomorrow and why we have issued two first alerts. first one for the heat and humidity from philadelphia, south jersey and delaware, away the beaches, 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on tuesday. temperatures through the mid-90s. feels like temperature 100 to 105. and then after the heat and humidity build up, we have got thunderstorms coming through with a cold front and pennsylvania counties are most likely to be hit by that. because it's coming at night. 8:00 p.m. tuesday to 2:00 a.m. on wednesday. possibility of damaging winds, lightning and small hail. the worst of that will come in western and central pennsylvania. 84 with increased sunshine right now and philadelphia. official high today 88. temperatures into the mid-80s across much of the rest of the area. of course, the eclipse happening middle of the afternoon. helped to keep the temperature

down a little. not able to do that tomorrow. it's 84 at the airport now. 8 7 in graduate hospital. 86 in fox chase. and all of those areas well into the 90s tomorrow. feels like temperature at 90. vineland and wilmington today. close to that in allentown. all pretty much be in the 90s to 100 tomorrow. these are the feels like temperatures for philadelphia during the afternoon tomorrow. of course, in between hours that's when it could get triple digits. not likely to get to triple digits in p.a. suburbs. lehigh valley and why we have no first alert out for the heat of those areas. we do have for delaware and for south jersey where the feels like will get close to 100 degrees during the afternoon. maybe even higher. these storms in maryland not moving eastward and ones of pennsylvania made into berks

when his 90-year-old mother's tv went bad, mark stepped in to help. >> my mother loves to watch the news. she'll get up at 4:30 and start watching the news. >> reporter: his mom purchased a samsung. >> it goes in the bedroom. >> a month after the warranty expired it stopped working. he went online contacted samsung and asked if it was still honor the warranty. they did and repaired tv. >> and then stopped working again. >> reporter: he said samsung made a second repair and then broke a third time. he asked for a refund. >> i think three times is more than enough to show you that there's a problem with the tv. >> reporter: he contacted nbc 10 responds. >> some of the documents from samsung. >> reporter: after checking the documents and contacted samsung, they reviewed the case and

refund him the $278.17 his mother paid for the tv. >> got you involved and next thing you know we got a check. it's great. you couldn't have done better by me. >> all right. samsung tells us it strives to make sure that the customers are satisfied and regrets he didn't have a satisfactory experience. he says he is going to use the refund to buy his mother another tv. just like the good son. also good, good takeaway, if your warranty expires by a few weeks or so, it doesn't hurt to check with the company to see if it may still honor the warranty. >> that's very good idea. hopefully that second tv now works. >> i'm sure. we would have heard from her by now. >> very good. let's take a look at money we have gotten back from the viewers. >> wow. we want to say hello to her, too, watching nbc 10.
