tracking heat and humidity as well as a threat for severe weather. we have your first alert forecast. >> we are following new developments in a crash that injured dozens of passengers in upper darby. and back in court, bill cosby return to a montgomery county courtroom with new lawyers and walks out with a new date for his retrial. right now panic and pain for late newt commuters after a high speed train crashed into an empty rail car. they are trying to figure out what caused the crash. good morning. investigators from the national transportation safety board are look into this.

the crash happened just after midnight at 69th street transportation center. a train smacked into an empty parked train around midnight. 42 people were treated for injuries. one pansz jer told us the train was stopping erratically before the crash. they are calling far better braking system to be put in place. our live coverage begins with steven in upper darby. >> it was right here where that took place shortly after midnight. we'll give you a better look. you can see there is caution tape here. we can also tell you the ntsb are on scene. they will try to find evidence to piece together.

42 people were injured and had to be taken to various hospitals in the area. it collided with the parked train. so far that information has not yet been released. we did speak to the mayor who told us these action need to stop. zbli am starting to get concerned every time there is a traffic accident it does -- but february we had another incident right here on this curve right here. >> reporter: we also want to point out that the station is not shut down. trains are still coming and going from this location. the ntsb is investigating. we hope to get an update from them coming up later today. when we do we'll update you online and here on the air. nbc 10 news. >> all right. thanks. 42 people were on board the train when it crashed. all 42 reported injuries and were taken to local hospitals.

we spent the morning where the train's operator was treated. around 5:00 this morning a man was escorted out of the presbyterian hospital room by a septa employee. >> do you have any comments about what happened? >> he can't make any -- >> reporter: all right. nothing you can tell us about your experience? are you okay? he didn't say how he was injured. they say the operator was treated and released from this hospital but will not confirm if this man operated the train that crashed. at the scene stretchers carried people to more than a dozen ambulances that had shown up. all 42 people reported injuries of varying degrees. four were critical and taken to penn presbyterian hospital. upper darby's fire chief says

they trained far large-scale call like this. >> it is not an unusual thing. we have been through the mass casualties response scenario. this one went just like we would have expected with the plans we put in place and scenarios we practiced. >> reporter: nbc 10 news. >> now officials want to know what caused the crash and what can be done to make sure accidents like this don't happen again. pamela has more from the scene in upper darby. a lot of unanswered questions at this point. >> reporter: lauren, there absolutely are. we have been saying the ntsb picked up that investigation. a lot of that activity has been taking place. the mayor of upper darby says he and his staff will be working towards a safety solution. >> struck the other train.

>> before it crashed into an unoccupied train had 69 street transportation center ronnie witnessed something that made him pause. zbli almost waited for the next train and we got to the terminal. i stood up to get to my bus on time and smack. hit the other trolley. >> more than 40 people were hurt. the collision came to a shock to other commuters who use the line every day. >> in february we had a collision at the same station. >> reporter: they say they are automatic train control which automatically slows or stops the train if the engineer fails to comply with speed restrictions. it is not capable of enforcing speed restrictions on curves or stopping a train if the engineer fails to do so. riders want to see more safety

impact on mass transit this morning. jessica is keeping an eye on things. what are you seeing out there? >> yeah. the first train left the 69th street transportation center for the high speed line. just like pamela just said the trains are operating. we weren't really seeing any big delays. so probably a good idea to check before you go and give yourself a couple of extra minutes. watching 95. big delays here. you can see one lane squeezing by. this is the off ramp right here. a nasty crash right in here. you an ambulance on the scene. 32 minutes from woodhaven road. speeds are dropping into the 20s too. ton eastbound side between route 37 and route 13 watch for an

opening. at least it should be back open or closed from 10:35 earlier. by the time you get out the door there you should be good. back to you. breaking news now in the bill cosby sexual assault retrial. a judge pushed the case back to spring of next year. cosby arrived at the courthouse with his new high profile attorneys. he won an acquittal for michael jackson. cosby also hired sam silver, the lawyer that defended council member on corruption trials. they did say they want to keep the case in montgomery county. lawyers from his first trial decided they did not want to continue when the sex assault

case is retried. we are covering today's development and we'll have a live report. we are track intense heat and humidity today. temperatures will feel like they in the triple digits. as we take a live look outside at the ben franklin parkway in philadelphia. we are tracking a threat for severe weather later today. we take a live look showing where storms are right now. this is across from meet and severe weather threats. krystal klei is here. >> yes. let's start out with that right now. aside from beaches in jersey shore we are looking at beaches as we get in from noon through 6:00 p.m. temperatures between 92 and 96

degrees. a lot of moisture in the air. it makes it feel even hotter to us. feeling close to about 100 degrees or a little above 100 by this afternoon. now, something you might be watching saying well, it's summertime. we haven't had a hot august at all. it will be a bit of a slap in the face. that hot humid air that's going to persist through the afternoon hours. here is a look at our feels like temperatures. this is 1:30 in the afternoon. already feeling like 100 in burlington. it is almost everywhere from philly at about 99 degrees. this is very hot conditions we'll be dealing with and certainly enough so if you're outside too terribly long you could -- you'll stay indoors if you can. as we go into the evening you see fairly hot. things will start to drop quickly once rain and storms roll through. so there's a look at radar and

satellite right now. clouds starting to thin out. it will allow temperatures to soar into the afternoon. we are watching a cold front to the west moving our direction. it has potential to fire off strong to severe storms by tonight. so we'll talk more about that first alert and hour by hour track coming up in just a bit. >> thanks. you can track storms with the nbc 10 app. download it and get severe weather alert for your neighborhoods. police say a serial groper is back at work. take a look at this skreetch. a man in his 30s or 40s grabbed a young girl and knocked her to the ground. the latest is similar to several other attacks against women wince 2015. they believe the same man is responsible for all of the crimes. police in delaware county are investigating a murder suicide. the gunfire broke out yesterday

outside the home. police found one person dead at the scene. the other person died at the hospital. police are not releasing names while they notify the families. philadelphia police hope this video will help catch a violent robber. the suspect stabbed a 7-eleven clerk. police say the suspect argued with the clerk over the price of cigarettes and pulled a knife and jumped onto the counter. the victim was able to fight his attacker off and the man fled. the clerk is going to be okay. if you know where the attacker is police want to hear from you. work to repair a water main leak will take another day or two. the fire department tells us it shot down three quarters for repairs. the water is back on. the ongoing repair work is shutting down part of powell street. president trump vowed to

bodies of several sailors have been found aboard the u.s.s. john mccain. the commander says the bodies were discovered in a compartment of the warship. yesterday it collided with an oil tanker near singapore. a total of ten sailors went missing after the crash. the foe cucus is on finding all them. >> they joined the search today assessing sealed compartments in damaged parts of the ship. >> nearly a half dozen sailors were injured in the crash and are now recovering in a hospital in singapore. president donald trump laid out his plan going forward. it will include more troops. the president did not give numbers. he heads to arizona for a campaign-style rally. we have the latest from

washington. president donald trump gave little specifics about his strategy to the war in afghanistan. >> we are not nation building again. we are killing terrorists. >> the president wants an honorable and enduring outcome. president trump gave in specifics on troop increases but made it clear more soldiers and resources will join the war. v vice president mike pence give more today. >> tals president will make available additional air combat resources using those brigade level personnel to call in that fire power. >> signaling a new policy to pressure pakistan to join the fight against terrorists. >> pakistan has much to gain from partnering with our efforts in afghanistan. it has much to loose by continuing to harbor criminals

and terrorists. >> reporter: he now headed to arizona for a campaign style ral rily. >> i am very concerned at where we are today. >> the mayor says he is disappointed to hold a campaign rally. the president also hinted he may pardon joe arpiai who was convicted. he says he had no idea he was going to get a pardon. flooding is so bad in parts of missouri people are waiting it out on the roof. kansas city was hit with severe storms overnight. these people had to head to the highest level to escape the water. homes and businesses all swamped there. all right. we'll start with a live view

outside. looks like a pretty picture. scattered clouds overhead. what we are looking at is a pretty good picture. it does not feel pretty good. already outside looking at our feels like neighborhood temperatures. some of us feeling like we are in the 90s. it's not the afternoon yet. it is 91 at the airport there. it is up to 98 degrees. 88 for the westbound area. these temperatures are likely going to be around 100 degrees by this afternoon which is not something i have said in quite some time. our august has been cooler than average for the most part. we are looking at hot conditions. we put that in effect from noon through 6:00 p.m. it feels like near 100.

upper 80s near low 90s for the pennsylvania suburbs. again, feeling like mid-90s. in the lehigh valley you're at 92. chance for thunderstorms, that's really more so tonight where we do have the best chance of strong to severe storms. in new jersey it's 91. stone harbor at 95. even though temperatures will be lower at the jersey shore not a ton of relief because humidity will be very high out there. that sticky moist air. it is feeling like 98 by our afternoon hours. so what we have some of those clouds thinned out as we have gone through the last hour or so. we are starting to see that sun breakthrough quite a bit. it will really heat up our afternoon and also energize our

skies for poe t potential of st storms. this front has some way to go. it is going to make it to us and you'll have a chance of thunderstorms in the area. it's why we have a second first alert up. scattered showers through the afternoon. still scattered clouds overhead with sunshine as well and hot conditions. as we go from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. you see scattered thunderstorms. some of these could cause wind damage. this is why we have a first alert in effect. you see through 11:30 right along the northern edge it is likely to fall apart. we'll have more in the next half hour. total solar eclipse has come

side. a high speed train collided into that parked train. had to be taken to various hospitals in the area. septa officials told us as many of four are in critical condition. the train collided with the train. so far that hasn't been released. they told us these accidents need to stop. >> i am being told it's 42 passengers. what happened initially is some of the more mobile people that were looking for a -- were

commuters train safety. what are you learning? >> reporter: we talked to a passenger who was on that train. he says the conductor was driving reratically. he was passing by stops and backing up and going back to them. you can see people standing. this is one of many pieces to the puzzle they are taking into the account as they continue the investigation and work to determine a cause of the crash. safety is on the minds of commuters and city leaders. before the north town train crashed into a parked unoccupied train at 69th street transportation center ronnie witnessed something that made him pause. >> i almost waited for the next train and we got to the terminal. i stood up to get off and get ready to get to my bus on time. smack. hit the other trolley.

it feels hotter than it actually is. delaware with the exception of the beaches under this first alert from noon through 6:00 this evening and temperatures should start to drop down a bit. looking at highs between 92 and 96. a lot of moisture in the air. it is downright sticky. it will make things feel like around 100 degrees outside. a few of us may be a degree or two above 100 degrees. take a look outside. we are at 84 in wilmington. this is what it feels like outside. most of us in the south feeling like 90s. atlantic city feeling like 93 degrees. this has been fairly cool around august. for us to get feels like

incident is similar to other attacks against women walking in princeton since 2015. they believe the same man is responsible for all of the crimes. police released new video of a violent robbery. the suspect stabbed a 7-eleven clerk after arguing about the price of cigarettes. the man is seen pulling a knife and jumping onto the counter stabbing the clerk repeatedly. the victim was able to fight the attacker off and the man fled. the clerk is going to be okay. one person dead in an earthquake in italy. it hit a resort island off the coast of maples last night. recuers are searching for victims. a seven month old wbaby was pulled from the rubble by one of the firefighters. nenendez jury selection

begins. he is accused of helping -- he says she innocent. at this point it is being watched nationally. if he is found guilt dpts y gof to christie could pick a republican to take his place giving republicans an additional in the senate. a california woman wins a record-setting lawsuit against johnson & johnson over baby powder and the link to cancer. a judge ordered the company to pay the $417 million. she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer ten years ago after she says she used it from the 1950s until last year. johnson & johnson is appealing. head of the secret service says the agency's budget is passed out. they will not be getting paid for that extra work.

retrial delayed. bill cosby's trial is being pushed back to next spring. we were there when this decision came down about an hour ago. she joins us live. yeah. bill cosby having a brand new defense team. the other attorneys coming from the west coast and also nevada. bill cosby didn't say much and th his lawyers said even less. he said he is ready to proceed with the trial but he
