dpom ri county tonight. we spotted this lightning from hanover township. live look over philadelphia. no rain here yet. we have seen quite a few lightning strikes over the past few minutes as well. this threat for severe storms could continue for several more hours. >> the latest fl from glenn schwartz. >> severe thurnds storms moving through into the philadelphia area within minutes. the severe thunder storm warning has been extended until midnight and covers the entire i 95 corridor. to philadelphia to will ming ton. and this is why. this is a line of very strong to severe thunderstorms. it has a history of producing some wind damage. some localized flooding, some hail. and you can see the fair amount of lightning thaths going on here, too. the area that most interested in is right down in to this portion

of delaware county right now with a fair amount of lightning. as you can see, as we zoom in. this is going right towards chester. it is right outside the city of chester now would take the strongest winds to see this bulge come out here. so that is probably the most intense part of the storm. where the strongest winds are going to be. just in the matter of minutes. the line of storms itself through 11:02. philly about 11:25. that's center city. parts of like chestnut hill get it much sooner than that. 11:30 cam den. and 12:10 in vine land. so far the storm has been holding together, so we can't assume it's going to fall apart. you have to assume that those storms are going to come through much of the area. in the next few hours. so tell you what's coming behind this. in just a few minutes. >> all right.

active night. nbc10 brought you live weather updates as the severe weather threat moved across the region tonight. you can get alerts if your neighborhood sent right to your phone by down loading the nbc10 app. new video tonight. giving us a better look at the damage vandals left behind at a philadelphia cemetery. nbc10 was at st. lukes memorial churge as police uncovered nearly two dozen toppled headstones. >> we spoke to family members left wondering who did do this. >> on the verge of tears. talking about what vandals did to two does b headstones at the memorial church. including one belonging to his parents and grandparents. >> this is my grandparents right here. i can't talk. it's just, it's just sad. >> reporter: sometime over night into this morning, vandals toppled 20 headstones and moved several others. possibly entering through a fence in the back of the property sfwl the church was

founded in 1861 at the start of a civil war. a history going back 150 years that includes headstones of a father and son who fought and died in world war i. and all the years this is the first time someone desecrated this burial ground. >> i was speechless and heartbroken at the same time. i don't understand how people could do something to a churchyard to a graveyard. >> reporter: crime scene investigators put numbered markers on each vandalized headstone. it will cost more than $10,000 to make retears. >> stain glassed windows. >> the congregation looks to a higher power and the support of community. to get them through this. tonight, the state of new jersey is mourning the loss of a long time public servant. jim way land was the state senator for the second district that served atlanta county. he also served in the state assembly and as the mayor of atlantic city. way land had surgery to remove a

cancerous growth on his kidney. but told supporters he was planning to return to work. he was 68 years old. nbc10 learned one of the ten sailors missing from a navy destroyer has ties to south jersey. ken knit smith attended cherry hill high school. one friend tells nbc10 he always wanted to go into the navy to follow his fathers steps. colliding with a oil tanker near singapore yesterday. divers found the remains of some of the missing sailors. identities have not been released. happening now. president trump in arizona, here is a live look at the campaign rally. president trump is holding a the phoenix convention center. the president told the crowd he is focussed on turning his attention to a accomplishing his agenda. mr. trump also defended his remarks following the deadly protest in charlottesville. and even accused the medial of

speed train slammed into a parked train at the 69th street station this morning. it's the second time an accident like this has happened there in the last six months. finding out why will take time. >> there's blood everywhere. the driver is all banged up and there was one girl bleeding out of her face. >> reporter: early morning passengers riding instead on stretchers. 32 of them taken to several area hospitals, most with bumps sdp scrapes. four had critical injuries, all are expected to survive the midnight collision. >> when you're going a certain speed and you can't control the vehicle, it's pretty scary. >> reporter: this is an accident changing minds about safety on the commuter line. >> i have seen enough here. and i won't ride it again. >> reporter: tonight the ntsb wants to know what went wrong. why would one of 26 swedish made rail cars slam into a another train parked at the terminal.

technology is supposed to be in place to slow speeding trains and alert operators of the another train on the track. they'll be looking into the questions. >> the complete functions of the system. >> other parts of the probe. the train operator. already out of the hospital. he will be interviewed and routine drug testing will be done. brakes will be inspected. joining passengers in pushing for safety upgrades. >> i'll be pushing to see if we can do something for the safety of the rail. >> investigators will likely also look into passenger reports that the car over shot stops before crashing at the 69th street terminal. a fugitive wanted for a murder on the main line is behind bars in georgia tonight. into custody today. investigators tracked him down after getting a tip he might

have fled to georgia. 24 year-old was arrested just outside atlanta. he's suspected of shooting and killing john lee outside a apartment building last month. police say the shooting was random. he's awaiting extradition back to delaware county. a reward offered in the unsolved murder of a chester county woman. a relative found 62 year-old dead inside her home in june of last year. but her killer is still out there. authorities are hoping a $35,000 reward will lead them to the person responsibility. retrial won't happen until next year. the judge granted a request to push the trial to the spring. it was scheduled to start in november. there's a few things o figure out like the case time line. and where the jury will be chosen. a mistrial was declared in cosby's first sexual assault trial in june. he's accused of drugging and sexually assaulting former temple university employee back

first alert meteorologist glenn schwartz will have an update in a few minutes. in the meantime. take a look at this video. new video here of a knife wielding attacker taking aim at a store clerk in center city. you can see the man jump onto the counter here of this 7 eleven. he repeatedly stabs the worker and police say it started with an argument over the price of cigarettes. the clerk will be okay. a family says they feel violated after thieves stole from their home while they were sleeping upstairs. >> nbc10 brandon hudson shows us how the thieves took their belongings, and also their sense of security. >> reporter: for this family, walking into their home on wood haven is not the same tonight. >> bone chilling. >> reporter: over the weekend. his family slept upstairs. >> they were walking around the house. >> reporter: downstairs a thief stole their sense of security. >> we're freaked out. it's traumatizing. thank god they didn't come

upstairs. >> reporter: paul, showed us how someone moved their ac unit to break into his family home. >> they basically came in through the side wall here. reached over, unlocked the window. >> reporter: a burglar grabbed their rent money. his wife's camera and cash from their 6 year-olds birthday party. which happened just hours before the break in. >> luckily they were young enough. they don't realize the severity. >> reporter: paul believes the crook hopped the fence and climbed the back deck where children's toys are next to the unit. they moved in this home three years ago. this is the first time he's heard of any crime on his street. he vows it will be the last. >> nobody will ever step foot in my house again. without me knowing it. >> reporter: police are investigating. we checked the web site and found two other property crimes within the block of the home in the last six months.

both of the times someone stole from a car. nbc10 news. new at 11. a local cheer leading team needs your help as they try to keep their competitive dreams alive. the this is the squad from the science leadership academy. in the team which held a practice tonight at temple made it to the preliminaries. but fell short of advancing. their coach wants them to take part in an over night summer camp to help them get better and qualify next year. they dedefserve the same opportunity as other girls in the state. >> they are hungry. a lot have full-time jobs. and pay for their own cheer leading and dues. it's important. just because they are from the city they're not excluded from the opportunity that offers college scholarships. >> the team is trying to leave for camp this saturday. they are still raising money to reach the $5,000 goal. tonight it's back to school.

but with a college feel for a high school freshman class. nbc10 here used prep school. the seniors hosted an orientation for the freshmen. that included tailgating, and field breakers. the goal is make the freshman get familiar with the school before the first bell rings on september 6. back to the first alert weather. keeping an eye on live pictures across the area. here at the airport the rain and lightning that you saw right there have really picked up over the last few minutes. these storms have hit neighborhoods across the area. >> more storms could keep you up to tonight. let's get an update from glenn schwartz. >> the worst of it is going through the philadelphia area right now. and in the next 15 to 30 minutes. after that, we'll have more rain later tonight. nothing like what we're seeing right now. you can see the lightning, the

reds indicating the heavy thunderstorms. but there's not quite as much lightening as a half hour ago. a lot of weakness in delaware. but some pretty heavy rain and thunderstorms coming right into philadelphia itself. chestnut hill and center city now are getting hamered. northeast philly just about to get it within minutes. and it's going to cross the delaware river. so cherry hill around 11:30. washington at 11:40. pem ber ton 11:46. you can see the heavy rain and thunderstorms -- just a portion of delaware right near the pennsylvania border. just east of willing ton. getting spared some of the worst of this. but now we're going into new jersey now, township just about to get hit. these are the damage reports at

least so far. these things with the trees down. that indicates obviously some wind damage. this is some hail, this is strong gusty wind. we had a good bit of it in the lee high valley and berk county. the areas we were expecting the worst weather to occur. that's where it did occur. now as we go through the next couple hours. we have more rain coming through, it eventually goes down towards the shore. but as you can see nowhere near as strong as it is now. we could still see a little bit of left over rain or showers early in the morning. but the general trend is for sunshine to come out, and to get a pretty nice day. look at the temperature drop as the rain comes in down into the low 70s. that puts an end to the heat and humidity. and so tomorrow 84 degrees high. it will feel like 82 because the humidity will be so low. i'm not expecting rain across much of the area except perhaps

outside. this is our eagles nest camera look at those wind turbines on the links spins right there. sfans of the phillys game are headed home right now in the pouring rain. we just checked in again with the number of outages has gone up to more than 7,000. stay with nbc10 on air and online for the very latest weather updates with that lightning continuing out there. also tonight a 7 year-old nnl boy was of the guest of honor at the thunder game. he threw out the first pitch. the burling ton new jersey native was diagnosed in 2014 with an inoperable form of brain cancer. after the game, people had their heads shaved in solidarity. the burling ton fire company also named him an honorary member. proceeds from tonight's game will go to the cancer initiative. >> the thrill of a lifetime for a young fan at eagles camp today. 13 year-old is battling leukemia. but this morning he made it to the complex, to take in the
