. >> and good morning, everybody. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. a lot to talk about. let's talk about our top story. >> it's the weather. the gulf coast bracing for the impact of hurricane harvey at this hour. look at these eye-drpopping ilp images. that is a big storm. it intensified, too. packing winds s up to 100 mile per hour. >> we'll get to dylan's forecast in a couple of minutes. let's start with gabe gutierrez. he's in corpus christi where it could make landfall tonight. >> we've saturdtarted to see thn picking up. the winds pick up, as well. there's mandatory evacuations for some low-lying areas.

and the governor has declared a state of disaster for 37 counties in this state. hurricane harvey could be the first category 3 storm to slam into the u.s. in 12 years. the warnings are urgent, as south texas braces for hurricane harvey. it could be the strongest storm to hit the state in half a century. >> heed warnings. your life is in potential danger. >> reporter: the mayor of corpus chris christi, with blunt advice. >> get out of dodge. >> reporter: ten critically urgent babies, moving them to a children's medical center in ft. worth. highways clogged with people heading inland. >> i'm scared. >> reporter: residents boarding up. stocking up.

>> water. canned goods. fruit. trying to be prepared. >> i'm expecting it to get crazy out here. >> oil companies scrambling to shut down operations in the gulf. the disruption could lead to higher prices at the pump. fema is prepositioning supplies and generators for a triple-threat. the storm supposed to slam into shore was a category 3 hurricane, bringing with it a life-threatening storm surge up to 12 feet. and torrential rain over the weekend, dumping some two feet in some areas. harvey would be the first hurricane to make landfall in texas since ike in 2008. in louisiana, memories are raw and concern is high. 15 drainage pumps aren't working. >> we're in a more vulnerable space than we should be in right

now. >> reporter: as you can see the surf behind me picking up. that's a major concern for this storm. storm surge. the national hurricane center has issued its first ever storm surgery warning for a swath of the texas coast. there are people that are inland, like san antonio, austin, and houston, expecting widespread problem over the next few days. >> gabe gutierrez. thank you very much. let's go up 250 miles up the coast. galveston, texas, is bracing for impact. and joe fryer. how are you doing? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. heavy rains coming down moments ago. the winds are picking up. lots of thunder and lightning, as well. behind my shoulder, you might be able to look at a ferris wheel overlook a water. it will be a quiet place today.

one of the biggest fears is flooding. with days and days of rain expected ahead. that's a fear here in galveston, which is a narrow island community. it is prone to flooding. and it knows what a hurricane can do. this was hit egspecially hard b hurricane ike. some did lose their lives with that storm, with mandatory and voluntary evacuations up and down the coast. some transit services were offering rides to get people to safer ground before this storm hits. back to you guys? >> thank you, joe fryer. dylan is in for al now. tide timing is important on that. >> as of right now, it looks like this storm can move in overnight at the time of low tide. that can alleviate the most dangerous storm surge. we're going to see the next high

tide around 8:00 saturday morning. winds up to 10 miles per hour. this is a category 2 kushurrica. we're look at the speed it is moving. and we have the threat of damaging winds and possible tornadoes as the storm whips its way towards the shore. we're looking at a category 3 storm taking landfall on saturday morning. and watch as the storm meanders across eastern texas. we are at wednesday, 1:00 in the morning. we have flash flood watches for a good thuchunk of texas, inclug houston. a widespread 15 to 20 inches of rain. some areas could end up with 35 inches of rainfall. this is a low-lying area. that's why we're expecting the devastating flooding. >> it's hard to believe we could be talk about this well into next week.

>> this storm has no current to push it away. it's going to sit there. >> we'll have more on this throughout the morning. thank you very much. now, the latest battle in washington, as the president tries to shore up support for his border wall. he is threatening to shut down the government if washington wasn't come up with the money. >> reporter: good morning. the latest clash between the president and top republicans will offer a preview of what a month of september will be. the president going after people he needs to go after to get anything done. the white house aides insist the relationships are just fine. for the president taking more and more shots at members of his own party, and no closer to a major legislative accomplishment, his latest move is to threatening the government

it's closer to corpus christi now, sitting offshore about 140 miles. life-threatening storm surge. devastating flooding. possible tornadoes are possible with this storm, as the outer band make their way onshore. it is expected to strengthen to a category 3 and maintain that strength before it makes landfall, sometime early saturday morning with winds up to 120 miles per hour. after that point, it will weaken. but look how it doesn't go anywhere. it stays across texas up into houston. that's one of the reasons we're expecting some dangerous flooding because this storm is going to last for several days. we could see widespread, 15 to 20 inches, including areas of houston, corpus christi. but some areas could get 35 inches of rain. good morning, i'm bill henley. we have sunshine on the way and
