guthr guthrie. live in studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to quali"today." craig is in for matt again this morning. man, does your heart go out to those in southeast texas. >> i've been hardened over the last 24 hours to see so many scenes, so many stories, of pitching in to help. random neighborhoods helping out. >> let's get you caught up on the overnight developments on this storm. the official death toll in texas is at three. but dozens more people are missing, including six family members who are feared dead after relatives said their van was swept away. >> the coast guard says it is receiving thousands of emergency calls every hour. they've rescued more than 3,000

people so far by boat and air. >> shelters in the houston area are filling up quickly. some 7,000 people spent the night at the city's downtown convention center. officials had planned for about 5,000 people. is, th so, this morning they're looking to open up another shelter in houston. >> president trump is heading to corpus christi, before touring an operations center in austin. >> we have complete coverage across the region. we'll begin with lester holt, who is leading our coverage this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. roar the gulf of mexico. expected to bring more moisture to the area and make another landfall sometime tonight. and that win and more rain. overnight, dramatic rescues as

tropical storm harvey revs up texas, after walking down a flooded freeway. the region bracing for another round of torrential rain, but with thousands trying to evacuate, the danger remains very high. this morning, a family of six is missing after their van was swept away by rageling floodwaters. family members say four children and their great grandparents were ran off the road. so far law enforcement has not been able to confirm the family's account. the governor of texas has activated all 12,000 members of the state's national guard. from the sky, the coast guard, air-lifting people out of harm's way. harvey's devastating assault on the lone star state is causing daniel and heartbreak. >> i wasn't expecting this at

all. >> reporter: in bay city, a mandatory evacuation order is in place. rescuers rushing to move people out of the senior center. in sugarland, texas, people get into a dump truck. >> it's going to get bad down there. >> reporter: in missouri city, texas, floodwaters brought two alligators in one woman's yard. many are using rafts, boats, in some cases, anything that floats, to get to higher round. back in houston, some families were evacuated from their homes. >> we were mine until they released the reservoirs. >> reporter: you weren't flooded before then? >> not yet, no. >> reporter: if historic flooding wasn't bad enough, emergency crews were forced to

battle this raging hire in houston. in washington, president trump prizing the spirit of the people of texas. >> we see stranger helping stranger. we endure together. >> reporter: the president is expected to tour the devastation later today. he'll be going to corpus christi near where harvey initially made its landfall. we can show you a picture from the air here, along the pubuffa bayou. we did "nightly news," is water was up considerably where it is now. it is largely due from the release of one of the reservoirs. craig and savannah, back to you. >> remarkable to see it from that perspective. lester, thank you. with more rain falling this morning, an already dire situation is worsening. and feet more, feet on the way. dylan dreyer is in hoouston thi

morning for us. what can we expect today and tomorrow? >> with the storm back over the water, it will maintain its strength. we will see the bands of moisture to stream off the gulf of mexico. even though it is over the gulf of mexico, because of the hurricane going through here, it's caused some upwelling. we're not looking at it strengthening back into a hurricane. it is still very slow-moving. a lot of the heaviest rains, affecting go inin ining galves t beaumont. now, it is looking like southeastern louisiana will see that landfall, wednesday morning into early wednesday afternoon. in the meantime, we will see the rain with this storm. eventually, it will make its way into the tennessee river valley and bring four to six inches of

rain. since friday morning, we've picked up 35 inches of rain in houston. and we're going to continue to see more rain likely. now, there's a chance by about 5:00 this afternoon, houston could finally get on the backside of this system, and turn over to more showers, as opposed to the steady rain. that being said, eastern texas will see more rain, and louisiana, as well. we will see possibly another seven to ten isolated 12-inch reports from here on out. that could put storm totals up around 40 to 50 inches for so many areas. we're getting to the end. but unfortunately, we're not at the end yet. guys the? >> dylan, thank you. with the rain still falling, there's growing concern for the thousands of people who are in and around houston, who was stranded with them. celes

celeste, it's good to see you. as i understand it, the water started rising in your house overnight. what happened? >> we had spent all day preparing, barricading the doors with wood and hot glue. it came in through from walls and the floor and the car get. we didn't have time to move all our stuff. we had to hurry and evacuate to our neighbor's stuff upstairs. >> that's where you're at right now. you're at your neighbor's house. before you got out safely, did you take anything with you. what did you have to leave behind? >> i had a suitcase of some clothes. my phone, computer. at the old house right now, actually. and we had to leave the animals behind. the neighbor could not allow animals in his house. so, i've been spending all tight trying to call people to come get them. >> are you hoping for a rescue,

celeste? are you stranded in your house. are you hoping somebody would come? >> we called emergency services four or five times yesterday. but no one ever showed up. called them all night, and no one has been able to come by. >> to be clear, you're safe in your neighbor's house. >> i'm at my house right now. i had to come back. the neighbor's house is fine upstairs. they have power. but downstairs is flooded completely. almost to our knees. >> so, celeste, how did this -- obviously, it's been raining for days there. did you think, our house is safe, we'll be fine? and suddenly, the water started coming up. >> it had gotten really high. but it stayed at the same level for a really long time. so, it didn't seem that threatening. and it seemed like it wouldn't

happen all at once. but then, it happened all at once. within an hour, it went from where it had been to inside our house. >> i know you live with your family and your brother. how are you guys -- are you feeling afraid that you won't get out of there? >> that we won't get out for a while. and that our animals won't have anywhere to go. >> celeste, we appreciate you spending some time with us. we send you the very best and hope that somebody can get to you. thank you. we're sending our love to you. craig? >> as we mentioned, harvey is still pounding southeast texas so far. the total would be 50-plus inches from one storm system. that's the most ever recorded in texas.

just to give you a sense, if this studio was in the heart of houston, texas, 50 inches of water would come up right there. just below four feet. if you think of the low-lying stuff around your house, four feet can do damage to a home, as we learned from these pictures out of the region. a lot more to get to this morning, including alarming new developments in the north korea crisis. the regime fired a ballistic missile that passed over northern japan. a defiant act, that prompted a phone call between president trump and the japanese prime minister. >> reporter: that missile flew for about 15 minutes. it's the second missile test that north korea has launch in the last four days. but what's important on this one

is the path that it took. north korea fired its latest missile at day break. it flew nearly 1,700 miles, provocatively right over northern japan, before breaking into three pieces and crashing into the pacific. defense systems in japan went into high gear. early warning systems advice people to find cover. prime minister abe holding an emergency phone call with president trump, calling the missile launch a grave threat. abe said that president trump is 100% with japan, its ally. >> they will be met with fire, fury and, frankly, power, the likes of which this world has never seen before. >> reporter: afterwards, north

korea threatening to attack guam, home to a military base. tensions are high this time of year because the u.s. military is carrying out military exercises with south korea. but tension s haven't been this high in year. south korea responded to the north korea missile launch by dropping bombs on its own. but only on a taste base inside south degree. where along the order today, we could hear north korean propagan propaganda. like the calls for a regime to be respected own feared. kim jong-un has fired more missiles than his father and grandfather combined and seems undeterred by threats or call for strength.

investigation, nbc news has learned, according to three courses familiar with robert mueller's inquiry, investigators are interested in the president's role and drafted response, in a meeting between he, and his son. he wants to know what the elder trump knew about the meeting. the president's in-house lawyer tells nbc news he's not associated with that statement, that said the meeting was primarily russian adoption. trump jr. was promised dirt on hillary clinton. it was true at the time of the statement and is true now. and defined the crafting of the statement minimal. a gunman opened fire in a public library in clovis,

this is still very much a tropical storm. and because of that, we have warnings extending through the coast of central louisiana, through texas, too. flood warnings are still in effe effe effect. in houston, we need just a few inches of rain to go across parts of louisiana. and that will spread up into cool 69 degrees with wind and rain in philadelphia. suburbs just 69 degrees. jersey rain and wind will be strongest at the shore. both inland and shore 69 degrees. delaware and beaches getting gusty winds. potentially up to 45 miles an hour this afternoon.
