here's what e we know right now. puerto rico is beginning to feel the wrath of irma. sustained winds at 180 miles per hour making it the most powerful atlantic ocean hurricane in recorded history. people in florida are taking no chance as they stock up on supplies. grocery stores are packed even though mir is still a few days away. president trump addressed the hurricane today. >> we'll know in a short period of time, but it locks like it could be something that will be not good. believe me, not good. >> take a look at this. there are dozens of cars waiting to get gas at stations throughout south florida this afternoon. florida's governor said state officials are aware of fuel shortages and are trying to help get gas into the region. >> nbc 10 has seen coverage of this major storm making its way across the atlantic. rosemary connors is at philly international monitoring the trsvel impact of the storm. erin spoke with utility drcrews.

but let's begin with meteorologist tammie souza. where is had headed? >> it's headed past the islands and towards the united states. would you like to stand in an ef-3 or ef-4 tornado for 30 minutes to an hour? that's what some of the islands had to do as the eye moved over them. that's the type of force that endured. they had to spend up to an hour in those type of wibds. and then strong winds coming and going. we're watching it as it does approach puerto rico with the united states and look at the size of this eye. it is immense. the storm is still quite large at 185 mile an hour winds. it's not undergone the eye wall replacement. it will start to weaken. as it crosses the islands, the eye will go north of puerto rico. it's about the size of texas. if we take the outflow, we're up to nearly a thousand miles in width with this particular storm. it's extremely dangerous because

of the size, the amount of water it can move along and. it is now giving beginning to pick up speed. fst approaching the straits of florida between the bahamas and cuba, but anywhere here is free game. by saturday, it's beginning to make that turn. now it could go anywhere west, east coast, straight up the middle of florida. by monday it may head offshore again. anywhere in the cone is free game. we'll have your local weather, coming up. >> local travelers to puerto rico are either putting plans on hold or keeping their fingers crossed as they travel right into the storm's path. flights have been cancelled. rosemary connors is joining us live from the airport.

some of these travelers are holding their breath and hoping for the best. >> reporter: they are hoping for the best. i just got back from checking out those boards inside philly international. we are start ing ing to see som airlines cancel flights to and from san juan. that means for one woman from delaware county she'll be celebrating her 7th anniversary here at home. >> that's how stephanie todd planned to spend her anniversary on a beach in puerto rico. she should be looking forward to the rest and relaxation. instead she's keeping an eye on irma with baited breath. >> close contact with my friends who had family there. >> i have been in contact with my brother, aunt, sister, cousin, we have been texting and calling. >> reporter: e she works for an international hotel company. she's scheduled to fly to puerto rico tomorrow for an annual trip

ride. more on when the rain will move out. >> it's with us for much of the evening. carry the umbrella. it's pretty quiet in philadelphia. and some cloud cover. the heavier rain moving through reading and allentown and berks county. this is going to move up to the north and east and edge in our direction. even early tomorrow morning before we start to dry out, it's part of a system that the area of low pressure through the great lakes and this is ahead of a cold front that's making its way eastward. we'll talk more about this and time it out in your full forecast and have another. update on irma in a few minutes. breaking traffic news in the lehigh valley. crews are on the scene of a serious accident. this is along interstate 78 in

allentown. it looks like it's raining there. this is video from one of the traffic cameras. this crash is in the eastbound lane s near the lehigh street exit. several cars are involved. there are injuries as well. we'll continue to watch this and bring any updates as we get that new information. in the meantime, nbc 10 obtained new police documents related to the death of a temple university student. >> specifically how she was found and who found her. zj zj is live in the breaking news. >> we found the information in the police documents. among them the application filed to get a search warrant for the property where jenna buehrle's body was found. in it, police say the suspect's grandfather found them in a tote in the shed of the home. police say, he unlatched that tote and opened it. george related that when he opened it, he observed a deceased female. he related the skin was

yellowish and she had long hair. that's when he called police. police then search issed the home. nbc 10 abstained this list of home. police say they left a bar thursday morning with josh. investigators say he killed her and brought her body to his mother's house, called the lyft ridesharing service to transport the body to his grandmother's home in wayne county. he is now charged in jenna buehrle's murder. they don't know the motive for that killing. keith jones, nbc 10 news. senator bob menendez said he did nothing wrong as e he walked into the courthouse for the start of his corruption trial today. he is accused of taking gifts and call pain contributions from a florida eye doctor in exchange for political favors.

during opening statements, prosecutors said he stole the office for a lifestyle he couldn't afford. >> never. not once. i have spent decades giving voice to those who are voiceless. >> he's the first u.s. senator to face bribery charges in more than four decades. because of the trial, the democrat could miss key votes on the senate floor. new details in yesterday's deadly crash involving two montgomery county highway workers. officials confirmed the identities of both men struck by a car. he was killed in this crash. jeffrey missourier is listed in critical condition. they were hit while painting road lines and any charges for the driver. pennsylvania and delaware, two of several states suing to block president trump's plan to end a program protecting young

immigrants from deportation. dozens of protesters took to the streets of washington again today voicing concern about the president's decision. they carried this giant statue and the likeness of attorney general jeff sessions. it's one of many protests following the decision to end the deferred action for childhood arrivals program. the president has now placed daca in the hands of congress. >> i'm also encouraged by the fact he gave us time to work out a consensus. to find a compromise because these kids for the most part don't know any other home than the united states. >> house speaker saz the six-month period should give congress time to pass new legislation. lauren mayk spoke with members of the immigrant community today at a local college campus. find out about the legal help they are receiving since president trump's decision. that part of the story new on nbc 10 news at 6:00. >> this just in. police in south jersey and the

fbi are offering a reward in connection with the murder of a mother and her young son. it's been nearly six months since the victims were stabbed to death in their burlington county apartment. ples plan to go door to door to try to find the suspect. >> that's right. detectives will spend the better part of this afternoon and tonight knocking on 1500 doors in this apartment community to garner new leads. just moments ago the fbi and local authorities announced a $25,000 in this case. take a look. you can see authorities are making their plea to the public as they speak. some residents are still in fear in light of the tragic case. >> initially, fear. >> fear and shock turned concern and worry in the apartment community. it's now been six months since someone got inside the family

place then hid in georgia. >> for weeks police posted pictures of rollins asking for help to try to find him. he's responsible for two shootings that terrorized two communities. denise nakano is live this afternoon where the suspect f e faced a judge. >> reporter: he faces a long list of charges including first-degree murder. he was brought from philadelphia where authorities say his crime spree began. >> anything? >> reporter: derek rollins didn't say a word as police hook him from police headquarters to face murder charges in the death of john lee. >> callously approaches this individual and guns him down in cold blood. >> reporter: he randomly targeted the 28-year-old temple graduate outside an apartment complex, shot him twice and stole his cell phone, which he later used. >> he robbed him, but it could have been an afterthought. >> prosecutors areç taking ovea

>> the gray clouds still in place. we are under achieving today. it feels like 64. winds are out of the north at 10 miles per hour. around the area, 63 in wilmington. a chilly 55 at mount pocono where there's rain falling. here's a look on the doppler radar. the heaviest showers are from baltimore up through parts of chester or lancaster county. and the heaviest rain just outside of reading and allentown. that is driving this cold front. it's moving more north than east. it's going to be hours before this clears. you'll need the umbrella this evening. let's time it out for you. we could see heavier showers coming through mid-evening.

and things will start to dry out. a sprinkle early in the morning. showers some time before 8:00. then we're pretty much good for the day. temperatures not making it too much further. on friday though, things look pretty nice. mainly sunny skies on friday. e we set ourselves up for a sunny weekend ahead. the temperatures are going to be running about ten degrees below average. we're taking a look at irma making its way now just past the north shore of puerto rico. look at this large eye. and the winds extending out about 50 miles per hour. here is our global forecast model.

the wrath of hurricane irma. this storm is roaring through the caribbean on its way to a possible arrival on the east coast. florida's governor today said he planned to call up 7,000 national guard members by trid. scott urged anyone in florida who intends to evacuate to get out now. officials in miami are warning people who live in buildings next to construction cranes to evacuate as well. it's too late to move the cranes and not designed to withstand a category 5 hurricane. >> the track of the storm is changing. our first alert team of meteorologists are watching every update. >> tammie souza is back now with more on this track.

right now the hurricane is barrelling towards puerto rico islands. you can see a picture of the eye directly over it. an entire island sitting in the eye of the hurricane. the winds anywhere from 160 to 185 mile per hour winds. we're continue ing ing to watch large hurricane. it's nearly a thousand miles wide. we're watching it as it's head ing off to the west. now 185 mile an hour winds. the pressure at 920, bru that's near record setting pressure. it's moving at 16 miles an hour. now tomorrow it's going to be to the north. then on friday, it will be moving toward cuba.

anywhere on sunday early in the morning. that could mean a landfall on the tip of florida by sunday morning. this is going to continue up and making another landfall in parts of the carolinas. it will be watching very closely. here we are on saturday. and there you go. pretty much all in agreement that this is going to be something close to or right over florida and perhaps even a second landfall in the carolinas. we'll talk more about this and break down exactly how strong the winds are when i come back. >> people in florida are packing up and preparing for the worst as hurricane irma moves closer to the u.s. mainland. >> tim furlong just arrived in florida ahead of the record breaking and catastrophic storm.

>> e we went to a store and there's long lines for gas. people on a sunny day loading up their cars with gas and supplies trying to get out of town. we went to a walmart and stocked up pretty dwood. got a lot of things. our crew got here and is going to need to get us through. just storm essentials. even to protect our camera gear, trash bag. s, things like that. more rubber boots that we need for the trip down here. walmart was crowded. they did not have water. you can try all you want to go to place, but finding a case of water is almost impossible in south florida. we did find individual bottles of water, but we grabbed a few and brought some down here from philadelphia and delaware. we brought as much water as we could shove into our bags. we can see people are getting concerned.

and have fun during the evening hours. but what we're watching is steady shower activity taking place. this is moving out of berks county. limb mic risk and charleston, westchester, you're looking at some very steady rain showers. milford, just light showers. all of this is going to move toward the metro area. you can see that the main body of the storm system shs the rotation is over the great lakes. it's not looking very quickly. it's parked there. there are a lot of things that have stalled in the atmosphere. there's a huge area of high pressure that's preventing this from moving. and in turn, that's what's steering hurricane irma to the west. all these pieces fit together. this is the player in all of it. we're going to be watching this go north than east. so we're going to be watching showers on and off tonight and maybe even early tomorrow morning. overnight we could have steadier

showers. temperatures tomorrow are going to start off in the 50s and 60s. we're not going to climb too much in the mid- to lower 70s for tomorrow. for the most part, we'll soo a mix of sun and clouds by the afternoon. on friday, showers and i don't know we'll get the instability showers. if we do, they will be brief. it will be one of those partly sunny days that's cooler than average. only looking at the low 70s to mid-70s. same thing on saturday and sunday. e we won't see showers, but we will see cooler temperatures with our sunshine. taking a look at hurricane irma, this will be a super typhoon. the strongest in the atlantic basin accepting the gulf of mexico and caribbean where some of them have parked and gotten just a bit stronger. this is continuing off to the west. you can see the giant eye is just off the north coast of puerto rico moving past the u.s. v virgin islands. the track takes it right to miami. that's where it would make

landfall perhaps sunday night and monday. we are looking at a second landfall possibly in the carolinas. if this forecast model is correct. let's go to the second one. the europeans, this was spot on with harvey. it takes a little further to the west over the tip of florida and the keys. you have to understand that's a category 45 storm. that could be devastating to some areas. especially the low lying areas. and then it looks it goes up the spine and over orlando. then comes back out making the landfall again. what looks like perhaps south carolina. so we're going to be watching closely to see where the tracks go. both of them bring rain showers by the middle of next week to our area, but nothing that is huge. so your weekend high temperatures are not going to be very warm. they will be 10 degrees below average, but on friday, we're looking to 75 in philadelphia with a mix of sun and clouds. south jersey at 74. on saturday the low 70s, but we do have sunshine. and on sunday, reports along the

in new jersey it's $2.80. nbc 10's steven fisher shows us just how high prices could go after irma rolls through. >> reporter: right now it's a numbers game for drivers. >> i put in $30 and it will have to do. >> reporter: gas prices are up more than 30s, the highest we saw $3.19 in delaware county. >> i drive every day. gas prices are ridiculous. >> reporter: she paid $2.89 for a gallon of regular at this station in upper darby. she said this is the cheap eest she could find and worries hurricane irma will push the price even higher. >> if it gets close to $4 or 5, just hold on. that's going to be too much. >> it's been a roller coaster for gas prices. a gallon of regular cost $2.34.
