this storm. >> it's not too different from the track we saw earlier today. at this point moving just to the north of puerto rico, this very large eye about 50 miles wide, hurricane force winds extend out from the eye about 50 to 60 miles and tropical storm force winds extend 185 miles beyond that. anybody in the path of this storm is feeling the fury of it as it moves past the injure vin virgin islands. you can see the size of this from one side to the other. so this is enormous and why there's so much concern. 185 mile an hour winds continue. that has not had an eye wall replacement. this is a typical thing you'd see. the pressure has dropped to 914 mill bars. expe expected to be a category 5. and into the bahamas. it may weaken as it approaches

florida. there's no guarantee of that. the center of the cone in miami. but you have to focus on this cone because that's where it could be at this point. we'll talk more about the track and show you two new hurricanes that have formed in the atlantic. people in florida are take nothing chances as they board up their homes. some grocery store shelves are already empty even though the impactç is a few days away. they have been stocking up for awhile. there are dozens of cars waiting to get gas. they are trying to get gas into the region.

>> nbc 10's rosemary connors is joining us live at philly airport. people still hoping for the best and trying to get out. >> they are hoping for that. maybe tomorrow, maybe in the coming days. to be determined what happens with those flights. in the meantime, people in our area are getting firsthand accounts from their family members right in the middle of irma's path. >> some of the little neighborhoods have started losing power. >> neighborhoods where her family lives in puerto rico, she and her co-worker were based in montgomery county. they are both scheduled to fly into san juan tomorrow. davis had planned a trip to see her family in puerto rico. todd was supposed to celebrate her anniversary with her husband. >> my flight is not scheduled until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow night.

by then we'll know how much damage. >> what are e we going to be left with after it passes, whether it's power outages, floding, i justen don't know. i nevered a hurricane. >> the images of harvey's devastation are still fresh. folks in florida are taking new chans chances. >> a lot of students driving home. i'm praying for everybody. >> in the meantime, davis and todd continue to keep a close eye on irma. they are thinking of the people in the path of this powerful storm. despite the warnings, davis is focused on getting to her 80-year-old aunt. >> you'll have to help clean. that's what we have to take care of. we'll just make sure they are okay. >> davis hoping she get down there at the least to make sure her family is doing all right. while they may be able to get

down there, getting back may be difficult and just like booking any last-flight it's going to be expensive. we're seeing the prices tick up on flights out of florida. reporting live, rosemary conn s connors, nbc so news. first responders from adros the area are being deployed to help with whatever irma may bring. fortune 40 members of pennsylvania task force one highwayed for the south. this morning they packed up and boarded buss in northeast philadelphia for the trip. >> this is where they want to be. are they ever going to be needed. that's what they think. they did a lot of work during harvey. >> the construction is also sending more than 100 workers to florida to restore power after the hurricane. at the new jersey army national guard is sending troops to help with hurricane irma. more than 100 soldiers are head

prayers for the suspect. it's not the kind of response you would expect from a mother who lost her son to murder. she's speaking publicly for the first time about the death of her son john and about this man now charged with his murder. >> i am not angry with anybody. i just miss my son. that's all. >> reporter: i reached her by phone as authorities announced assault charges against the 24-year-old suspect from north philadelphia. >> police say rollins randomly targeted the 29-year-old temple graduate outside an apartment complex. shot him twice and then took a cell phone which police say he later used. >> just callously approaches this individual and guns him down in cold blood. >> reporter: lee remembers crews rushing past her as she

home later learning they were responding to her son. >> i pray for him. just want to my son. i miss him every day. >> the grieving mother of four described her final moments at his best side at the hospital. >> she tells me that she's praying every morning to find the strength for her family to go on. i'm denise nakano, nbc 10 news. >> developing now, police are looking for two men who tied up a woman inside a home. one of the men had a gun. officers rushed to the scene when a neighbor called 911 after hearing the woman screaming.

>> i could hear her from here. please help he. somebody help, please. she was screaming. >> officers found the woman tied up in the home. it's not clear if the two men stole anything from the house. tonight we have new details about the murder of a temple student and how the suspect tried to cover up the crime. police documents reveal the suspect's grandfather found the body inside a tote in a shed on property in wayne county. that property belongs to josh's grandmother. new this evening, a confederate flag controversy has police officers taking legal action. a group of african-american officers believes there's a racially hostile work environment at the narcotics unit. an officer in that unit had a confederate flag on the license

plate the of his personal car and allowed to park on city property. >> if he felt comfortable enough to put the flag on his vehicle, how can he walk around the steereets with a badge and deci who to arrest. >> once the police department learned of this issue, they told the officer to remove the flag and not allow him to park on city property with it. the department has not commented on the legal complaints announced today and the order of police has no comment. tonight new jersey's u.s. senator menendez is on trial on federal corruption charges. opening statements happen today. the senator choked back tears outside the courthouse. >> i appreciate all my supporters who have stood by me as i try to clear my name. i'm thankful for the countless new jerseyans who have either called me or my office to say they have my back as i have had

theirs. >> menendez maintains his innocence. prosecutors say he sold his for a lifestyle he could not oi afford. he's accused about lying about taking gifts in exchange for political influence. president trump crossing party lines. today he sided with democrats in a death debate. he met with leaders of both parties. he agreed to a democratic request to extend the debt ceiling and government fund iin for three months. republicans wanted longer extensions. the extensions are tied to a bill to bring immediate e relief to parts of texas and louisiana. d"endeavour" stated by hurrican harvey. up next, all new at 6:00, a local university giving students legal help after president trump's latest immigration move. plus how pennsylvania and delaware are fighting the president with a brand new lawsuit tonight. and i'm tracking irma along with two brand new hurricanes that have just formed in the

immigration move. >> the two states join trump in the lawsuit filed today. it challenges the decision that the president made yesterday to end the so-called daca program. that left young undocumented immigrants brought here by parent gos to work or attend school without fear of deportation. 800,000 young people are in that program. >> tonight rutgers is helping students who are scare d they could be deported. lauren mayk is joining us to explain what's going on here. >> they hired an attorney after the travel ban took effect and they have all kinds of questions. now he's very busy dealing with questions about dara and will help them navigate what comes next. it's something students, schools and businesses are all trying to figure out. >> reporter: it's the beginning of a new school year and the first day of fall semester came

with a jolt. the news that thousands of students could be deported. leaving them to figure out what happens next. >> we were in a frenzy. >> reporter: a law professor here and also drerkts of the immigrant justice clinic. >> there's going to be a lot of concern among current students who have daca about what this means for them. >> reporter: information from the department of homeland security, she's figured out the way the program is winding down. some students with expiring permits can e renew, but they have a small win e doe of less than a month. rutgers is offering students free legal koun consultation to help deal with the change. >> will this prevent some students from finishing their education? >> well, because of the support of the university i'm hoping that it won't prevent them from the education. i think the concern is what are they going to do about that when they graduate. >> reporter: that's because employee employers prove you are eligible to work. it's a dilemma pr companies who

employ daca rerecipients. they have been fielding calls and e-mails from business clients. >> i got an e-mail from a local employer late last night saying we have one recipient and frighten. ed. e we feel like we need to get a message to him today to let him know we're going to support him. >> reporter: some businesses might not even realize they have daca resilients on staff. e eventually companies could face a difficult choice if a recipient permit runs out. >> what are their options? >> their options, it's either you terminate them or you employ them çillegally. >> reporter: while heavy heard from some big companies vowing to stand behind employees, he says that it is a smaller company that could see a bigger impact if one or two or a handful of employees are affected. >> one philadelphia college is

slashing tuition by more than a third to attract more students. the university of science plans to reduce tuition by 37%. they are trying to get more people to apply. your first alert weather now on a rainy wednesday. the rain has been on and off. this rain, nothing compared to the storm right here that's slamming the caribbean. it's starting tonight. let's get to chief meteorologist tammie souza. you're tracking the hurricane's latest path. >> i am tracking the latest path and showers here at home. so let's look at what's going on here. we have scattered showers making their way across the area. you can see some stronger showers right now. so we're going to watch all of

this it in south jersey continue to press eastward. we have a lot more of this flow coming up from the south. that's because the whole system isn't moving. the center of rotation is over the great lakes and blocked by an area of high pressure off to the east across the atlantic. that's the same high pressure that's staring irma toward the united states. so we're going to watch scatt scattered showers move through. isolated thunderstorms are possible. tomorrow only in the low 70s. we hit 71 today. we might hit 73 tomorrow. we are looking at the possibility of some wrap around showers from that center of rotation over the great lakes. on friday, i don't think it's going to be as widespread. saturday we clear out. it will be cooler, but we'll have a lot of sunshine. now irma, 185 miles an hour winds. look at the well-defined eye. that's larger than most islands. let's take a look as it moves past some of the islands.

i want to give you an idea of what these people went through. it moved right over st. martin. look at that eye. also moving through, you can see it as the eye moves through. entire islands within the eye of this hurricane. let's make a comparison here. this is amazing. around the eye, we have the strongest winds. those could be up to 185 mile an hour winds. that's like being in a tornado nor 35 minutes. same wind speed, but you're going to be stuck in that with all that destruction for nearly an hour with strong winds on both sides of that.

we also have something else to talk about. irma is not alone. we have jose out here. category 1 hurricane just formed. and then we have katya in the gulf of mexico. this is going to move on to the mexican mainland. this will be a rainmaker from mexico. it's not often you see e three hurricanes lined up in the atlantic basin. this is a fairly rare event. i'm john clark. we're going to hear from carson wentz and coach on the season opener. lane johnson talks about his trash talking with the redskins and how his teammates feld about it. that's next. at carmax, we buy all the cars.
