good goes around and around and around. hey! ♪ irma tears through the caribbean. it has its sight set on florida. this is all that's left of popular tourist destinations after irma tore through with heavy winds and rain. a message for those ordered to evacuate and those who may be forced to flee their homes. listen to that hurricane.

it brings power and fury ashore. irma is the most powerful hurricane formed over the atlantic ocean in record red history. near ft. lauder dale people were boarding up buildings and putting plywood over winds. sit a familiar routine but there's nothing routine about this hurricane. this is about 110 miles north of punta cana. it is moving west/northwest. maximum sustained winds are clocked at 180 miles per hour. good morning. i'm katy vzachary. officials in parts of miami area ordered mandatory evacuations. florida's governor are strongly

urging people to follow the order. they say the gas stations should have fuel today after some stations ran out yesterday. erika has the latest. a lot to talk about and a lot in the path. >> that's right. we are seeing those maximum sustained winds at 175 miles per hour. to your point, still a category 5. this is what we are tracking. current pressure at 921 milibars. it is headed in our direction and we are expecting land fall some time over the weekend. pause this where we are expecting conditions to be really rough. while it's not going to make land fall in the bahamas we are expecting it to pick up steam and pick up its path and not be effected. it won't be effected by any of the land masses. normally we are looking for

something to weaken it. not going to be the case here. it is speeding off a lot of that warm water. it will be a very healthy hurricane as it does make land fall. expected to be over the weekend. we are seeing saturday at 8:00 a.m. we are expecting wind speeds to be at about 155 miles per hour, which would make it a category 4. it does favor the eastern portion of the peninsula. right here at 8:00 a.m. it is feeding off the really bawarm water here. i think it will maintain its strength as it continues to work its way across florida. coming up we'll talk more about this. back to you. >> thanks for that update. if you live in florida preparing for hurricanes is a fact of life. the threat that irma is posing is one of the most dangerous that people there have ever faced. sarah rosario is live.

what is going on there? >> reporter: well, katie, it's a beautiful day in miami right now. we all know that can change once hurricane irma arrives. all eyes are on irma's path. we do know it could be a catastrophic storm. mandatory evacuations are already in place in low lying areas of miami. today in south florida a mad dash for safety. sandbags and gas all many preparation for irma. the monster storm raging towards the sunshine state. the governor warning people to get out. >> regardless of which coast you live on, be prepared to evacuate. >> emphasizing irma's uncertain path. >> there is certainly enough fuel there to keep irma as an

extremely dangerous category 4 or 5 hurricane. >> today the caribbean wakes to irma's palt of destruction, 185 miles per hour winds leveling barbuda. >> as it stands now barbuda is barely habitable. >> reporter: businesses are boarding up and gas stations are running dry. >> it's a mad house. i don't want to run out of gas on the road. >> we boarded up the house and hoping for the bechlts itst. it's all we can do right now. >> reporter: some people are choosing to stay. >> i don't think i could be safer any where else. >> reporter: they warn it is more powerful and not worth the risk. >> that was sarah reporting for us. people are landing from places

gabriella. they were on vacation in the dominican republic. >> i literally got into panic mode. i started booking one flight. from there it got cancelled. i went to a different airline, that one got cancelled. >> they thought they would have to ride it out in an airport until they found a rescue charter flight with just a few seats left. the couple ran down the runway and took off free of charge. >> she was like an angel. they sent in four rescue flights. there were 32 seats left and we got seat 25 and 26. she was like an angel. i took it like a sign from god, like get home. >> the couple is now safely in philadelphia. they run a popular canoli business. they do tell us concerns about the people they saw at the airport that could not get one

expect today question donald trump jr. about whether the trump campaign colluded with russia. they are expected to focus on a meeting with russian lawyer and others during the campaign. trump jr. also agreed to appear in the coming weeks before the senate intelligence committee which is conducting its own investigation. caught off guard after reaching a deal with democrats yesterday. it combines disaster aid with measures to keep the government open. it extends the debt ceiling for three more months. by agreeing to the three month extension the gop controlled congress would be forced to revisit the debt ceiling and government spending extensions come november. >> reassuring hundreds of immigrants about his dreamers decision. he tweeted for all of those daca

not tomorrow morning. by about 6:00 p.m. we start to see green pop up. i think we'll see clouds and props one or two sprinkles. it looks like a lot of sunshine and trending dry tfor this weekend. tomorrow's high temperatures will be in the 70s. that's same story for today. so today we'll see 70s. that's the story for tomorrow. that will be the story through the entire weekend. with the exception of a couple extra clouds i expect it to be a great weekend for everybody. be sure you keep those outdoor activities in tact. neighborhoods for tomorrow looking pleasant. high temperatures topping out in the 70s. for today that's what we are seeing. hurricane irma starting to approach as a category 5. our biggest concern is that it

isn't going to contain this. really high elevation that can weaken a system like this. it will continue north of cuba and finally make land fall in florida. models right now are trending. the tip of the florida peninsula are east of that. we'll leave it like this. saturday at 8:00 a.m. it looks like it will make land fall as a category 4. we'll have to track that for you as well because that could change. we move it through sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. conditions are really devastating because you can see here that the hurricane just tends to be just offshore. so it can feed off some of that warm water. we'll keep you updated. a really nice weekend. lots of sunshine. a great trend and not tracking showers until the following week. back to you. >> thanks. eagles fans, are you praying

longer posing what appeared to be a threat to himself or witnesses at that moment. in order to fire it is to the officer or another person because jones never looked back in the video and his hands were empty. he posed no eminent or immediate threat to pownow. >> he was a 12-year veteran of the philadelphia president. he stopped david jones for riding an illegal dirt bike recklessly in june. we'll have a live report. that is just ahead. shifting gears now, hurricane irma could be the strongest storm to hit in 25 years. next our team coverage continues as this category 5 hurricane heads towards the u.s. stay with us.

and you can hear that wind whipping the palm trees there. we are seeing videos in the british virgin islands. an atlanta man recorded the storm from his hotel room. you can see the wind was whipping around the palm trees and boats are in jeopardy as well. cubans are watching and waiting anxious about the arrival of irma. the storm is due to hit some time tomorrow morning. this is an aerial shot of miami. it is sunny and bright there.

it's a really nice day but irma is not too far away. it has the southern coast of florida in its sight. hurricane irma still a huge category 5 storm that already left destruction behind in the caribbean. there is now a hurricane watch for florida keys and southern florida. about a million customers without power in puerto rico after irma struck there. ability 70% of the power is gone on the island right now. erika is tracking this storm. >> really interesting here. hurricane irma already set a record as the longest lasting category 5 to sustain its speed of 185 miles per hour.

sustained speeds are 185 miles per hour but impressive that it already broken a record. it's one of three hurricanes in the gulf. be sure you download the app for more updates on that. all eyes right now on hurricane irma and expected land fall as of right now which means sustained wind speeds between 130 and 156 miles per hour. of course it could change because there's nothing impeding its strength or organization. this is why it is such an important track to follow. we'll show you more images and keep you updated on the path of irma. right now it is a category 5. you can see that it is going to maintain its position and really not have anything in its path to

6,200 home. there were about shelters set up as an emergency precaution. he said this morning floogd is a major concern. they try today make sure people are choosing to return to their homes are getting there safely. this is as 1 million people waking up without power today. back to you. and in my am my diami-dade waited for irma's arrival. they say the state is ready to help anyone that needs to evacuate. >> if you don't know how to get out we will get you out but you have got to call us. >> some r out of gas but he thinks all of those gas stations will have more fuel today. right now in south florida boarding up homes and businesses as they prepare to take a direct hit from this hurricane.

tim is in hollywoobe north of miami where today it is calm before the storm. rnchs we are coming to you from hollywood beach, florida. you can see it is a perfect beach day. the ocean is calm. it is warm water. it looks like a good situation. when you come over to this side that lady said there are people filling sandbags at the broad walk. around the corner they are boarding up the windows here. they haven't had to take these kind of precautions ever but irma is this kind of store. you can see they wrapped up all of the tvs and hunkering down

anything they could move so it doesn't blow away should all of the wood out here fail. it is a very serious situation. this is nick. he owns the place. tell me this real quick. >> yes. >> how serious are you taking this at this point? you're a new england guy, how seriously are you taking it? >> very serious for us to be doing it this liearly. this is the second time that i have been here that we have done this. we want the safety of everyone that works with us, giving them an extra day off to take care of their family and everything. >> reporter: it's worth not making money today to get everyone out safely? >> exactly. >> reporter: people are telling us a lot of this area is normally packed. there are a lot of older motels here. there are taller newer buildings

attention. demonstrators have actually gathered outside of this police building. they say that's not enough. they want this officer to be charged with murder. that is what they are calling for right now. they have extra officers here on bikes guarding the front entrance of the police department. going back to what all of this is about, richard ross just briefed you us. a surveillance video was a key factor in the action they have taken against the officer. they say the officer used poor judgment. you may remember he was transporting a family to the special victims unit when he spotted david jones riding a dirt bike. he said the officer used poor judgment when he stopped the patrol car with the family inside and failed to notify police radio that the stop was taking place or that he was in need of back-up. he is on a 30 day suspension

with intent to dismiss. he fired three shots. i will let the commissioner explain. >> the first attempted fire was reasonable and within policy because he was struggling with a male he knew was armed, a male who tried to pull a gun on him. the second and third shots that pownow fired were from distances of approximately 10 and 35 feet respectively. in both instances jones was running away with nothing in either hand. >> the commissioner made several references that in that surveillance video you can see there was clearly nothing in jone jones's hands at the time he fired the shots. you're taking a live look

miles per hour. i will show you record breaking facts. let's go ahead and track irma for you at 175 miles per hour sustained wind speeds. this is really important. notice how we maintain category 5 as far as the strength is concerned. as it continues to move through it stays north of cuba and south of bahamas. there's no land mass at all impeding its strength or organization. this is why irma is really alarming especially as it continues to make its way towards florida. expected land fall some time this weekend. it looks like saturday and sunday time frame. as we zoom on in a little bit closer here it looks like it will make land fall as a category 4. we'll keep you updated. i'll zoom in a little bit more. it does maintain its position off the coast of florida right around -- it is just east of florida and southeast of georgia.
