tv   NBC10 News at 4pm  NBC  September 7, 2017 4:00pm-5:00pm EDT

4:00 pm
saturday in parts of georgia. >> nbc 10 has team coverage of the historic storm. meteorologist tammie souza is in the first alert weather center. lauren mayk is at philadelphia international airport monitoring the travel impact. ted greenberg has the story of help from our area headed down south. we begin with the latest track on irma. >> irma is staying on the same track moving west/northwest. the only good thing is it's downgraded to 15 miles an hour 175 mile an hour winds. that happened because of eye wall replacement because this is over favorably warm water. it's not going to hit the mountains of hispaniola or cuba to weaken it. it's on direct course for part of the bahamas and the florida peninsu peninsula. the center of the eye is 679 miles from the tip of florida. the outer bands about 476 miles from miami. that's when they will start to feel some of the winds pick up and the clouds moving in. here's the eye of the storm.
4:01 pm
you can see an enormous eye headed towards the turks and cay koes. it would fit in that giant eye. the strongest winds are right around the eye and eye wall. that's where the 175 mile an hour winds are. this could continue to strengthen some. right now the pressure is 922 millibars. it's moving west. it stays over the open water. this is warm water. this may actually downgrade to a category 4 but that's 155 mile an hour winds. whether it's a 4 or 5, this is catastrophic. then the cone takes it right over florida, perhaps the center of the cone into miami. this looks like it could be very early on sunday morning. and then up the east coast. but anywhere in this cone from the bahamas all the way over to tampa, that is where the track could jog to. it depends on where this hard turn is made. after that, it looks like the storm is going to maybe make a second landfall in either georgia or south carolina. that could happen as early as monday or tuesday.
4:02 pm
we'll talk more about this and the other two hurricanes out there in the atlantic. one of them will become a major hurricane in the next day or so. >> you can get the latest track of the storm with the l nbc 10 app and see photos of the damage and get instant alerts sent right to your phone. we have a look of video of damage left behind. littered the streets there. more than 1 million people are without power on the island. now the storm is setting its sights on thest u.s. it ha tim furlong left philadelphia yesterday and headed for south florida where people are preparing for the storm this afternoon. he joins us live. >> strong words from florida's governor about the need toe vascular wait. and so tell us what the feeling is where you are right now. >> reporter: people are heeding the warnings. it's kind of a weird thing. you see for some people it's a quiet day in. this otherwise busy town. but you can see people out on the beach enjoying the day in that beautiful blue water.
4:03 pm
we come back this way and you can see a lot of signs. a lot of businesses aren't open. you come up here and see they put up warnings all over town. police have been driving up and down the broadwalk. they have been telling this is a state of emergency and need to get out of this town. you can see a lot of businesses that aren't already closed up and ready for the storm are getting ready now. it's a mad dash to get ready and get out. traffic is backed up as far as the eye i can. millions are trying to leave and at the same time gas stations are running dry. >> it is a mad house. i don't want to run out of gas on the road.
4:04 pm
>> we have seen what hurricane irma can do. 185 mile per hour winds devastated the area with storm clouds on the horizon, business. s are boarding up. >> we boarded up the house and are hoping for the best. it's all we can do. >> reporter: some are choosing to stay, at least for now. >> i don't think i could be safer anywhere else. >> state and local leaders are advising against that saying the risk is not worth it. >> regardless of which coast, be prepared to evacuate. this storm can change. >> reporter: people should have started thinking about evacuating yesterday. i think what happened is there's been some talk that the track of the hurricane and people are thinking to wait it out. some of the buildings were built after hurricane andrew. but even those people are telling us at this point here in hollywood beach, they are thinking, it's probably a good idea to get out. >> what about for you getting around and getting gas and the lines we have seen. is it difficult to navigate because of all those problems? >> reporter: it's starting to become a little frustrating and
4:05 pm
worrisome. i have my wife and kids worrying about me at home. i told them we are not going to put ourselves in real danger, but the gas station is going to be an interesting ordeal tonight. we haven't been able to find any gas all day today. we have half a tank in an suv. we don't e know where to go for gas. we have seen some places where they are complete ly closed off. they have roped them with crime scene tape and said we don't have anymore. people are 50 cars deep and waiting over an hour and a half to get there. you get to the front and there's no gas left. so tonight we'll have to sit in one of those lines and just hope we get some gas. if we don't get some gas, i'm not exactly sure what we're going to do. we were able to stock up on food supplies and individual bottles of water. we couldn't get any cases of water. so we have some concerns about the next couple days here in south florida. >> certainly makes it challenging and reminiscent of during sandy. local red cross workers are heading south to lend a hand.
4:06 pm
we were at philadelphia international airport as the executive director of the tricounty chapter boarded a flight for south carolina to organize volunteers. >> one thing that just keeps us going is we're doing good. we're helping the people. we're providing some safety, skurlt, emotional support and helping them get through it. >> other workers from our area are headed to florida. some are already there. taking a live look at philadelphia international, where people are pouring in from florida, they are not taking any chances. our coverage continues with lauren mayk live at the airport. >> these people getting out for good reason. >> reporter: this is a powerful storm, but escaping is it is a little tricky in this case because of the size of the storm and the path, that cone that is
4:07 pm
going north in florida may not be the answer. so what some people are doing are boarding up their homes, packing up kids and pets and coming here. in the philadelphia airport, young families safelien of the and finally a little bit peaceful. >> it was stressful. i'm just now starting to get a little bit relaxed. >> reporter: he spent the past few days in miami in a flurry of preparations to get out of harm's way as hurricane irma approaches. >> i really wasn't tracking it until monday that i saw that it was going to go through miami and we needed to do something because of the baby. >> they are staying with family here where philadelphia is a safe haven for those fleeing the storm. >> she was called in as a first responder. >> i have been through storms before. and we stay just about every
4:08 pm
time, but this one was too strong. so we left. >> her son-in-law picking them up today. >> do you feel better knowing she's here? >> 100%. we're glad they are here. >> reporter: he joked with so much luggage, they are moving in. but in all seriousness, it's unclear when they will be able to go back. >> how will you know when to go back? >> by watching the news down there and calling friends and neighbors to see if it's safe to come home. >> they are here or one-way tickets. some people i talked to do have return trips scheduled for early next week, but at this point, they don't know whether they will be on them. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> soldiers from south jersey getting seth. and the lessons they learned during hurricane sandy could help save lives.
4:09 pm

4:10 pm
you can see some of the folks writing some heartfelt messages to the family. temple's president says he's devastated. he called jenna a role model. not only are the people here remembering her but co-workers are doing things in her honor. >> everyone loved jenna. everyone knew her. she was an amazing person. she was a breath of fresh air. she was different. >> reporter: inside this clothing store, the memory lives on. it was here where she worked for the last seven months. her former co-workers including alanis came up with the idea to have a section in her honor to highlight the temple student's unique character. >> her aunt was in here yesterday and gave us a big hug saying thank you so much for doing this. it means a lot. >> she was found dead over the weekend in wayne county. her body stuffed in a blue tote.
4:11 pm
investigators say she was targeted by. the two leaving a bar early thursday morning. her friends on the job tell us they started to worry immediately when e she didn't show up. >> we were just like that's not like jenna. she's always on time. it was not like her at all. >> people continue to stick around and pay their respects. you hear the word shock a lot. that's quite frankly overused. here it is not. a lot of people are still in disbelief over what happened. for now we're live at temple's campus, nbc 10 news. to this now, the cousins charged with killing four men on a farm appeared in court.

4:14 pm
for it. ts officer's gun jammed when trying to fire his first shot. that move was justified, but he was unarmed and as much as 35 feet away when the officers third shot was fired. >> because jones never looked back in the video and his hands were empty. he posed no eminent threat. >> during the three-month investigation, the cases sparked protests in the city. most recently outside of the officer's house. organizers showed up at the police department today. >> we will show back up at his house. but for now the officer is deemed only in violation of departmental policy. jones' family says they also want to see the officer put in jail. >> i don't get it.

4:18 pm
yesterday we talked about this area of low pressure that was just right over the great lakes. it's taking the heavier rain with it. as these bands wrap around, we could get clipped tonight or tomorrow. i think the models want to put some in for saturday morning. that trough is is going to move out of here and not going to help us getting r inting rid of threat. this is going to be the steering mechanism to help to turn the big hurricane and hopefully turn it in time to avoid catastrophic damage across the east coast. for us we'll be looking at west winds. could see tomorrow an isolated shower coming in. a chilly start to the day in th maybe a wrap around shower from that big area of low pressure. we'll satday only the low 70s. maybe a sprinkle there as well. it will be a chilly but sunny
4:19 pm
saturday. and we'll have lots of sunshine in the mid-70s. now it does have a path that's going to take it right through perhaps the terks and cay koes. this is an idea of how far it extends. but from here out, that's the winds that were the hurricane force winds from 70 to 175 miles an hour. from the eye out to 185 miles, 's looking at the winds. from 40 to 74 miles an hour. so you can see why this is going to affect a large part of the east coast. doesn't want to move it. there we go. we have three hurricanes out there. the first one katya is in the gulf of mexico. 80 mile an hour winds. it's a category 1.
4:20 pm
we're not too worried about that. here is irma. irma headed toward the united states. 175 mile an hour winds. that's category 5. and out here is jose. jose is now a category 2. it will become a category 3. it will stay out to sea, but they have issued warnings now for all those people that got hit so hard in the le ward islands. that's going to track directly over them. they are being told to prepare for another direct strike from another very large hurricane. 75 for us tomorrow with a mix of sun and clouds. maybe an isolated sprinkle. 71 on saturday. 74 on sunday. on monday, 77. clouds will move in. and our look at irma may start as early as tuesday, wednesday or thursday extending perhaps into early on friday. guys? our coverage of hurricane irma continues. coming up, racing the storm and winning.
