coverage of hurricane irma from south florida to philadelphia. we'll begin with tammie souza. give us an update on the track. >> here's the thing. they are going to start feeling the ecffects of irma because tropical storm force winds are 185 miles out from the center of this storm. you can see it barrelling toward the bahamas. it's not changing its track. we are hoping for that hard turn. it doesn't look like the timing will be as fast. it's further south at the cone for it. so we started to make the jog west. it will probably shift west even further. let's hope not. but here's the bottom line. 60 miles out is where you have the wibds. that's from a 75 to 175 mile an hour winds. and 185 miles out from the

center is where you have storm force winds. this is a giant storm. it's going to take awhile for it to move over. it was standing in a tornado for a half hour. that's the intensity of this. so still 175 mile an hour winds. tomorrow it's going to be passing coup pa. it's going to be passing the eastern most tip of cuba. look at this. the cone barely goes over the mountains of cuba. not enough to weaken it then it's in the straits of florida. right into the center of the cone over the tip of florida. up florida, all the way through jacksonville at the category 4. and into georgia and downgrades to a category 1. this is probably going to be the most destructive path. more coming up in a few mngts.

>> that's the sound you'll hear across miami. homes and businesses boarding up windows preparing for the worst of wind and rain. e we sent tim furlong ahead of this storm. he's following how people are bracing tonight. >> a beautiful evening and lots of people taking their e boats out here. we saw a yacht go by. a lot of boats going that direction to get away from the storm and get to a place where they can put their boat out of the water. this is a lifeguard stand here in hollywood beach. you see it's on the ledge. if the winds are as bad as they could be, he's not sure they will survive. all day long, businesses have been boarding up. they have not boarded up the n

windows. they put plywood over the edge. they have been trying to get the ounings down. it seems to be a big concern. they had the beautiful awnings that are strapped down. if the wind catches under that, you know what's going to happen. it's going to flip and go up. it's a very dangerous situation. a lot of people who even this morning were telling us here on hollywood beach that maybe they are going to stay. maybe it's not going to be so bad. a lot of people having a change of heart and are going to do the mandatory thing and get out of the area. >> it's important they get out and stay safe. thank you. millions revascular waiting from florida and georgia before irma arrives there. >> limited e evacuation routes mean big traffic backups. check out this backup on interstate 75. all tolls along the highways have been suspended to help with

the evacuation process. . >> a lot of people getting out of florida. they are heading to our area. flights have been arriving through florida throughout the day. >> lauren mayk is joining us live tonight. passengers we spoke to say they dealt with really long lines in miami before their flights here. >> it was absolutely packed. one passes people seem to be handling those long waits and those long lines pretty well being polite and gracious knowing everyone was in the same situation just trying to get out. >> caroline didn't have to e see the latest hurricane track to know it was time to leave. >> it was enough for me early in the week. it's not worth it. know whag a powerful hurricane can do. >> my husband lost his business

in hurricane andrew. >> with that in mind, she also knows what could be in store for her home state when those evacuating return. >> it's very difficult. there was no place to rent. no way to recover your business. people moved away. it's a life-changing event. >> reporter: not everyone here is fleeing the storm. >> he's to get back to miami. >> i have friends and co co-workers. aoife l i have a lot of clients to serve. >> travelers waited in long lines. >> it was crazy. i have never seen anything like it. >> reporter: the crowd included not just passengers but pets. >> that was what it was because you can check your pets in online. if you had a pet traveling, you had to stand in line to check ut

n. >> there's plans to stay with a friend. >> if not, we'll look at the next steps. >> more flights are expected from florida here tonight. we have noted that one flight expected to get in around 7:30 has been cancelled. and that was from miami. travelers know that at one point, airlines will stop flying in and out of there. i checked and at the miami airport, the air traffic control tower it will shut down when there are sustained winds of 55 miles per hour. this storm has winds of almost three times that. >> the sunshine state is getting a helping hand from the garden state. 130 soldiers from the new jersey army national guard were loading up equipment today. tomorrow they are being deployed to southeast florida.

killed. the firing doesn't go far enough. she join us live at police head quarterers with more. >> reporter: commissioner ross says when the shots were fired, david jones did not pose a threat. no matter how you feel about this case, it cannot be lost on a grieving family is still searching for answers. >> we're still grieving. we miss him. >> on the evening of june 8th, david jones was riding a dirt bike. police say e erratically. another moment he was dead. >> sadly, two parallel lanes of

poor judgment crossed on that evening. >> in between numerous policy violations. according to commissioner ross who announce d today that the officer will be fired starting with the initial traffic. stop the officer kuked twhooil while transporting a father and two children for an unrelated case. not immediately calling for backup. jones allegedly ignored the officer's commands and was illegally carrying a gun. jones was unarmed as he ran away. the gun had dropped. it was found at least 50 feet from where his life ended. the commissioner said as the shots were fired, jones did not pose a threat. >> i know hen wasn't out of his mind when the cop pulled him over. i really don't get it. >> reporter: for three months the family has marinated in their grief waiting for new developments. >> it's half way there, just firing a cop is not enough. i want to see this. cop in jail like anybody else.

>> reporter: here's the thing. the criminal charges can only be filed by the attorney generals office. they say this case is still under investigation. we're learning more about david jones. he was a truck driver. he was he spent a lot of time on the road. he was only home for two days when this shooting happened. reporting live, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. it was the case that made national headlines. four young men killed on a bucks county farm. today the two suspects accused of the killings appeared in front of a judge. shawn kratz was wearing a red prison suit and walking with a noticeable limp. this is video of him being led into the north hampton county prison. his cousin faced the judge through a video feed. he confessed to the killing in exchange to have death penalty removed from the case. both men are scheduled back in

court in october. new jersey senator kory booker. wants statues removes from the capital building. they are on display at the national hall. it began as a protest over the removal of a statue. up next at 6:00, dogs left for dead in a local park. now they are making a comeback. new at 6:00, why their abuser could get one of the harshest punishments ever in pennsylvania. and i'm tracking irma. i'll break down the winds and who is going to see the strongest winds as this makes landfall on what appears could be the florida peninsula.

operating in our area. >> he was laying on her side just almost dead. the coldest dog i ever felt that was still alive. >> reporter: that's how a passer by found these dogs. starved, abused and beaten in upper darby. >> she was in the worst condition i have ever seen. they both had wounds all over their face and neck, which are classic for fight wounds. >> reporter: they are here at animal hospital in downing town. lei la is improving well. . gracy is still touch and go. >> it will be two more days before e we know if she's going to make it. >> this is something that's very hard to look at. >> reporter: even harder to. humane officer is leading the investigation and says their scars and wounds tell a brutal story, one of organized dog fighting i. >> there's no doubt in my mind they suffered a lifetime of abuse. >> reporter: they could have been a part of a local dog fighting ring, something they are looking into it.

>> there's more than animal cruelty. there's other gateway crimes involved with dog fighting and heinous crime to animals. >> reporter: the only fighting they have left. is their foigt to live. >> just a sweet dog that doesn't want to be in pain, doesn't want to be abused. >> reporter: due to a new law passed in june, whoever is found guilty of abusing those dogs can now be facing felony charges. steven fisher, nbc 10 news. philadelphia is hoping to become home to amazon's new headquarters. the online retailer announced it plans to build a second headquarters in north america. it would make people smile. look forward to submitting a proposal. a.mazon says their new headquarters would create 50,000 high paying jobs. back to hurricane irma now churning there in the atlantic. it's already brought disaster to puerto rico and caribbean and now headed to florida.

chief meteorologist tammie souza is tracking irma's path. >> what's really sad about all this is behind irma is jose. it's going to track over the same islands. it stays out to sea and does not threaten the united states, but it's going to bring more devastation to where they are almost annihilated on the islands. here at home, a a much quieter day. we hit a high of 74. that's below that 82 we should be at this time of year. 73 in vineland. coatesville at 68. 73 in atlantic city. so a quiet day here. the doppler radar sweep iing th squie. nothing to talk about here, but there's an area of low pressure that's slowly moving eastward. that was a driving factor for the showers and storms we saw yesterday. that could bring some wrap around sprinkles and showers maybe tonight and tomorrow. we're watching more closely not that system to move out over the

atlantic, but this big trough out to the west. this may have enough oomp to go ahead and push the high pressure that is steering irma further to the east. that would pull irma up in the winds as the trough shifts off to the east. at this point, it looks like it may have slowed down just a little bit. we'll be watching for perhaps the tracks to shift even further to the west. we're watching winds out of the west. low 70s tomorrow. a wrap around sprinkle is possible. saturday you'll wake up in the 50s and make it into the low 70s. you'll have sunshine and sunshine on sunday as well. you'll make it into the low and mid-70s on sunday. we're looking at irma had. this has 175 mile an hour winds. this is a well defined eye. it's passing over the turks and caicos. it will pass over cuba and just to the north of cuba to help

wrip it apart. and right now all of the forecast models are focusing a lot on florida. it looks like this may stay on land if the model runs stay the way they are. up intoen atlanta and tennessee. this is the european model, which has been the most dependable model. this is what happens on sunday morning. it makes landfall in southern florida and moves past through the middle of the state. it's a category 4 by the time it reaches jacksonville and heads up into e atlanta. the red would be the winds around 125 to 175 miles an hour. the orange is 100 miles per hour. you can see it's going to encompass a lot of real estate.

that cone encompasses all of the florida peninsula. a mix of sun and clouds. 71 on saturday with bright sunshine. 74 on sunday. a nice day. 7 on monday. and perhaps a little bit of that overrain moves in next tuesday, wednesday and thursday. it's dependent on the track, but we'll be watching that closely. i'm john clark. coming up, we'll hear from jeff laurie. should the birds be a playoff team. stay tuned.
