night. the videos show the powerful winds and driving rain hitting resort properties along the western side of the island. the high storm surge expected to cause major flooding. new photos out of barbuda. it blasted the island nation killing at least three people there. you can see shattered debris and buildings trashed. france and the netherlands split control. they said the storm killed four people on their side of the island and one reported on the dutch side. the governor says federal help is on the way for residents there. irma damaged many of the boats. one sailboat worker said he had a boat anchored in the harbor which is now nowhere to be found. he says he and fellow residents were fortunate.

>> we lit candles, played games. >> they pounded with top wins of 150 miles per hour for more than four hours. fire and police stations collapse in the main hospital and sustained pretty heavy damage. this is a live look as it tracks irma. they say the hurricane weakened a little bit to a category 4 as it moves between cuba and the bahamas. it remains a dangerous threat to florida. now a live look. this is west of orlando. you can see all of this traffic here. this is where a lot of people headed to avoid the brount of the storm. the influx creating traffic headaches there. getting out of south florida has been a challenge far lot of people. drivers have been stuck in traffic jams as they try to escape before the hurricane hits. this is on florida's atlantic coast about 65 miles north of

west palm beach. experts say irma will bring with it a storm surge that will effect the east and west coast of florida. they were busy clearing branches off of power lines to get easier access to repair possible outages. fema's chief is telling people in low lying areas to heed the warnings and get out now. fema deployed more than 8,000 to help with the continuing harvey recovery effort. we have the latest now on irma's track. >> right now the concern is its strength and fact that it will remain very organized upon land fall. as we get this into motion current lay category 4. download the app for more updates. it looks like it may make land fall very early sunday morning.

lanld fall could be right around the florida everglades. so technically upon impact. there is a lot of swampy area. that is one of the bigger concerns. this is going to be catastrophic to say the least simply because of actual impact. from south to north weather normally works from west to east. this will be a huge problem as far as storm surge goes. of course rainfall flooding. we'll be watching that for you around the clock at least until impact and beyond that of course. so hurricane irma currently a category 4. once it makes land fall it will continue working up to central florida into georgia and continuing as a hurricane finally becoming a tropical system weakening to a tropical depression. in addition to that we have been tracking an 8.1 magnitude

earthquake. it has been devastating. we have more updates and more pictures on nbc 10. all right. people in miami are rushing to board up their homes, get their boats out of the water, buy food, batteries and get gas in their cars. in miami-dade they ordered more than half million people to leave. we are live with a look at how they are preparing for hurricane irma, sarah. >> reporter: yeah. with this storm expected to hit in less than 48 hours today is the last chance for people to get out of the area before things start to really deteriorate here. within the last couple of hours we have seen the winds significantly increase. winds will continue to increase as hurricane irma gets closer. it's a desperate race against

waiting and waiting to go in to seek shelter before irma hits. about 30 minutes up the road in fort lauderdale we caught up with a small group of people to fill up sandbags. it is technically illegal to fill up sandbags from the beach. >> what is your biggest concern? >> not having a home. >> she moved to florida from maryland six months ago. she said she plans to ride out the storm in a hotel. army national guard unit is on its way today. sending 100 soldiers and 40 heavy trucks to help the recovery effort there. the motto, you call, we haul. they helped people deal with the aftermath of super storm sandy.

nbc 10 has a team of reporters in florida right now. >> it is the biggest to hit there in a century t. magnitude 8.1 quake killed at least 15 people and toppled houses. people hundreds of miles away felt it. the u.s. geological survey reported at least 20 aftershocks in the five hours after that quake. police say a local college student walking alone overnight was attacked by two men. a sexual assault investigation is underway. randy is live near the campus with details on how the victim's

boyfriend helped police get to her, randy. >> reporter: this is located next to two high schools and about a block away from the university. you can see detectives still at the park where it happened. the assault happened down there by the basketball courts. police say this young woman was on the phone with her boyfriend when the assault happened. he quickly called philadelphia police and campus security. officers began searching for the victim. but police say by then the male suspects had taken her to the wooded area in the park, threw her to the ground and even threw what they believe is bleach onto her face. >> those males grabbed her. there is an allegation that some form of bleach or substance was thrown in her face. they threw her to the ground and

was physically assaulted and possibly even sexually assaulted. it's a horrible case. >> you can see philadelphia police gathering more evidence. we saw them looking for surveillance video. those two suspects ran away after this attack. police still need help finding them. i spoke with officials from the university. they say counselors have been with that student all night. they are urging any students to not walk alone especially at night to utilize their 24 hour campus shuttle that can pick you up where ever you are and they are praying for the victim this morning. nbc 10 news. in philadelphia a woman lost her husband and two young children have lost their father after a murder in the city's spring garden neighborhood. he had just gotten out of his car last night when two men came up, stole his wallet and shot him in the face.

the two-year-old daughter was in the backseat of that car. they are looking for two people in their late teens or early 20s. a house fire sent three people to the hospital including a boy that went in to rescue his cousins two he thaug were inside. the boy and two police officers all suffered -- some had to jump from a window to escape. a recycling facility sending smoke rising above a fire. crews got it under control a little after 7:00 a.m. no one was hurt. all eyes on hurricane irma but millions still suffering from the devastation of hurricane harvey in tks tchlkex decisions they are making.

evacuated a school following reports of an active shooter. they arrested one person. officers are searching the school to make thur everything is safe. they wouldn't say if the person arrested was a student. vlgs a federal appeals court rejected the trump administration's of who is allowed into the united states. the court said grandparents, could you sayens and other close relatives should not be prevented from coming to the country. the unanimous ruling from the 9th court of appeals cleared the way for refujes to travel here. the decision upheld the ruling. that decision will take effect in five days instead of the normal 52. the department of justice plans to appeal. lawmakers just voted to approve a $15 billion disaster

we could see it strengthen or weaken. download the app for more updates. they will be out there live upon its land fall. so right now it's approximately 375 miles to 400 miles just off of the florida peninsula. this is a big concern because there is not much that's inhibiting it from maintaining its strength and continuing to barrel through the atlantic bay son towards florida. now, locally conditions are gorgeous. as they are in florida, we saw that live shot there. one of the concerns we have here is the effect of the energy as it continues to work its way from south to north across the eastern sea board. so we do have a rip current forecast high risk for today. it is dangerous. be sure you at least swim with a buddy if you go out into the water. i recommend you don't.

lot of people, what school am i going to send my child to? is there one piece of advice you can give trying to choose the right schools? >> i would say explore three or four schools, try to find the best fit for your child academically and socially. keep a broad vision and a lot of our families never thought they could have the means to send their kids to private tuition based schools. you can always decide later. if it ends up not being a good fit you can always change schools. you never should feel locked in if your child is not in the right environment. be open to listening to your child and understanding their needs. >> good advice. >> my suggestion besides coming to our fairs would be visit the
