he became stuck and the helicopter was in trouble. >> you said i don't know how it happens, but he's going to be crash landing. he said the paramedics are on the way, police are on the way, fire trucks are on the way. we got pushed back behind the building so it blows up. >> we didn't get much information that it was a standby in distress. what that b meant, we didn't know. we were responding up there in the event for a crash landing. and as i said, it did not even make it to the airport. >> mow medford's police chief confirms that two adult males are among the dead in the helicopter, but he was not provide us any names until the next of kin are notify ied. en montgomery gentry was set to play at the airport tonight. that concert set to begin at about 5:00. we do know that within an hour or so of the helicopter crash

sea, we're bringing you complete coverage from florida to here in florida. >> the governor declared a state of emergency. look at the devastation. the governor is also warning about hurricane jose. on the west coast of florida, people are filling sandbags in fort myers. others are scrambling for supplies before stores shut down ahead of the storm. within the past hour, disney announced its four theme parks are closing its doors tomorrow night. universal and seaworld are also closing. the parks shut down when hurricane matthew hit last year. >> tammie souza is in our first alert weather center this afternoon. we are monitor thing the travel impact. tim furlong is there in florida. tammie souza, you have the latest track. >> it looks like it's going to cover all of florida. let's take a lock. the giant hurricane is category 4. a strong, almost 5 hurricane. it could strengthen back up to a

5. it doesn't matter. it's now starting to make that very gentle turn to the northwest. more of northwest rather than west/northwest. it may skim the northern part of cuba, but it's becoming close to miami. the outer bands of the clouds and even some rain showers are making it in that direction right now. so they are starting to see some of the effects of irma headed their way. already moving through the bahamas and it's going tb tomorrow night when this makes landfall. 155 mile an hour winds. it is 225 miles east of caribbe caribbean. and the millibars, 925 millibars so the pressure has come up a little bit. still an incredibly strong storm. let's e show you where this is going to be headed. it is going to make a beeline for the tip of florida. anywhere this this cone. it could swing wide and goup the

west coast. the gentle slope of the sea floor there would allow for higher types of storm surge. but it's going to encompass both parts of florida. it is going to march up the center portion of the state. there are watches and warnings at both sides for storm surgeç and winds. it will downgrade to a category 1 just as it approaches jacksonville. and then a tropical storm as it moves overen atlanta or somewhere there in the tennessee valley. sort of fizzling out is expected across parts of dkentucky and tennessee. this is going to be with us for the next several days. we'll take a look at what's going on also with hurricane jose, which believe it or not, may turn into a category 5 and strike some of the the islands hit so terribly hard just days ago. that just seems so wrong. >> you can get the latest track of the storm with the nbc 10 app and also see more photos of the

damage and get instant alerts sent to your phone. >> members of the national guard are on their way to help out. crews left at 7:00 this morning. more than 100 members are driving 40 heavy trucks to central florida expected to stay there for at least two weeks. while the national guard is heading to florida, most are trying to get out. >> tim furlong is live now in fort lauderdale where the evacuation is still going on. >> reporter: another hot day in florida. the breezes are kicking up. that downtown fort lauderdale. this is kind of a party street about a mile west of the ocean. but you can see here everything is starting to be boarded up. this is a mandatory e evacuation zone. they are not gloing to come door to door, but once the storm starts if you're still here, you're on your own. it's a race against time. florida getting ready for a direct hit from hurricane irma. >> trying to basically secure

all of my hatches and everything like that. so water doesn't get in the boat. >> reporter: people are packing up preparing to get out. at this late hour, it's not e y easy. bump tore bumper is making a fast exit impossible. rain is starting to fall in south florida at this home depot police are helping with crowd control. the store overwhelmed with the last-minute rush and another store lines hours long and hundreds deep people waiting for plywood. >> this looks stronger than wilma. >> reporter: for those staying, they are dealing with lines of their own. this crowd waiting for an evacuation center to open heeding warnings to seek shelter. we have seen what the monster storm can do leaving its mark on several islands and puerto rico. i have been to this it town a bunch of times. that's my favorite taco spot. usually people are outside eating at that restaurant. lots bars. they are all boarded up at this

police believe he was murdered even though he hand hadded over his wallet. neighbors rushed to help him after hearing the gunshots along melon street in philadelphia spring garden section. nbc 10's deanna durante has been on the story all day. >> any indication police are close to making any arrests? >> reporter: if they are, they are not say issing much about that. tonight we know that he was out having a game of frizz bee with his 2-year-old daughter and his dog when he came home here we're told the two armed men were walking along melon stroeet, approached him trying to park his car, stole his wallet and shot him. it's one of those streets you would miss unless you were looking for it. it's a smaller strip of newer homes and neighbors can be seen walking around with strollers. today they are grieving and trying to understand how something like this could happen. >> just to know someone we really care about and love has just left us like this. it's pretty devastating.

>> reporter: nbc 10 has take ab look at facebook posts and gotten a statement from people who knew him. they all say he was a guy who had a thirst for life, was always smiling and loved his family. sources think after he turned over his wallet to two thieves, they wanted his car. with his daughter inside, sources believe he tried to get her out of harm's way before he turned over the keys. >> he was just the happiest person. >> reporter: there are cameras on homes here on melon street and a construction site in front of me. a good look at video saying they are looking at all avenues in this case to try to find those men responsible. there is a $20,000 reward being offered. reporting live, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. elsewhere the search is on for two men who attacked a local college student as she walked

alone. she may have also been sexually assaulted. police say the pair followed her and then threw bleach in her face. the victim was on the phone with her boyfriend at the time. he quickly called philadelphia skplis campus security. students say they are really worried about their safety. >> i walked home by myself last night. it's really scary. >> police tell nbc 10 they will not release the student's identity or condition. they are hoping witness who is may have seen something come forward. the death toll continues to rise in mexico this afternoon after a major earthquake late last night. at least 35 poem are dead after the 8.1 magnitude quake. police are evacuating residents because of a tsunami alert. there's no tsunami threat for the u.s. west coast, but take a look at this. hundreds of people running off

to the streets in mexico city late last night after the quake. it actually caused buildings to sway and parts of the city lost power, but no major damage reported in the capital city. billions of dollars will go toward the recovery from hurricane harvey in a bill aprovered by congress today. the house approved a $15.3 billion disaster aid package. it's the deal that president trump negotiated with democrats. some republicans spoke out against the deal. the deal also increases the debt borrowing limit for the next three months. it will take years before parts of texas recover from the damage of hurricane harvey. you can see the streets there lined with just heap piles of flooring, dry wall and furniture. at least 100,000 homes were damaged by the storm's historic flooding and rainfall. president trump is heading to camp david for a meeting involving his entire cabinet. they are expected to discuss a wide range of things like the threat of hurricane irma, tax reform and nuclear crisis in

temple student murdered near campus last weekend. last night friends and family said good-bye to jenna buehrle at a wake. her family is now asking people to make contributions in jenna's memory to blessing bags for the homeless. a memorial was held on campus to help students cope with her death. buehrle was last seen at a bar near campus last week. she left with a man who killed her in his north philadelphia apartment. he then moved her body twice and is now charged with murder. we continue to follow breaking news in the past 15 minutes, we confirmed country music star was one of two people killed in a helicopter crash in new jersey. that crash happened around 1:00 p.m. near the airport. nbc 10 learned troy gentry was on board that helicopter. gentry was one-half montgomery

gentry. he was killed just hours before he was scheduled to perform. he was best known for his song "our town." he was the father of two children. we're still waiting on the cause of this fire that sparked near the base of the walt whitman bridge this morning. thick smoke covered this recycling facility around 4:00 this morning. the fire burned for about three hours before firefighters could put it out. delaware's governor is keeping his word to make changes after a deadly prison uprising earlier this year. today the governor signed two bills to improve security at state prisons. one make it is a felony to hurt a prison worker. the other expands the list of contraband prohibited in prisons that could be used to facilitate and escape. they kill ed one and hurt other. each new classroom for the school district's new trade cut

clouds. some have a few sprinkles, but it's been a beautiful day out there. no complaints. 73 degrees right now. it feels like 73. the winds are out of the northwest at 9. we're about 8 or 9 degrees where we should be. it's 68 in allentown. 72 in mount holly. 73 in atlantic city. 59 in mount pocono. that's rather chilly out there. this is the huge area of low pressure. we talked about this thing very slowly moving eastward. usually they race out of here. it's being blocked by high pressure across partsç of the atlantic. that's the steering mechanism for what is a giant hurricane irma. we may see a few sprinkles into the area. nothing to report. but don't be shocked or surprised to see a quick sprinting in your neighborhood. let's check out what's going to go on. for the most part, we're in for a delightful weekend. an isolated sprinkle or shower makes its way through the area. temperatures in the 60s. we'll drop off into the 50s across much of the area. tomorrow we're going to see plenty of sunshine. we'll see winds out of the

north. it's going to be cooler out there. e we'll start in the 50s and then we'll jump into the 70s for tomorrow. on sunday lots of sunshine and on monday we start off pretty nice. clouds move in at night. and by tuesday, we could be feeling some of the leftover rain from irma. irma still moving off to the west and northwest. but you can actually make out the little bit of a turn. the trough is making its way into the midsection of the united states. and the outer bands already are just kind of brushing against miami. here are the three hurricanes we have out there right now. it's remarkable to see three of them. two of them that are category four. one is going to become a category five. they both might. irma, 155 mile an hour winds. right now moving west at 14 miles per hour. this is jose. jose has 150 mile an hour winds. it's a strong category 4. it could strengthen and may go out across the islands that were

land. not such for couba. but weak b the hurricane. it's probably not going to. it will stay over the favorably warm waters and make a landfall. that's expected anywhere this this cone. all the models are lining up on the tip of florida to go right up the center of florida. perhaps even a little further to the west. this cone has been edging ever so slowly to the skbes go right past tampa and orlando as a category 3 or 4 downgrading to a category 1.ç look at the path. it's a huge cone. this is going to encompass the entire state of florida. and take a look at this. the rain totals are not as impressive as the storm surge. the storm surge down here say naples and fort myers, that

could be into miami. we're looking for rain on top of that. falling in miami, it's a fast-moving storm so that's about the only saving grace that's going to go through there quickly and be done as far as the wind, very big wind radius. it will die down, but it's going to encompass hurricane force winds across the entire state of florida. >> time is running out for the major airlines. >> our team coverage continues now with erin live at the airport. >> some people paying big money to try to get away from this storm. >> lots and lots of money. it's no secret people are doing

everything and anything they can to avoid the wrath of irma. that does include paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars for one-way tickets. we have been out here all day and talked to so many people they admit they are running scared. travelers trying to get out of the way of hurricane irma. she's one of the fliers able to snag a ticket on tuesday leaving her home in sarasota. but others were not so lucky. >> when i weblt to look for a ticket for someone else, they would have to go business and then economy one way up to philadelphia for over $1,000. >> reporter: nbc 10 checked in with a few travel agencies on what some of the flights are averaging. most saying around $200 to $400 one way from florida to philadelphia. but could be more. that's not too high of a cost.

drivers are waiting for an hour or more in their hot cars for gas. but one man found a way to cool people down. the owner of walls ice cream was handing out sweet treats to people waiting in line. so nice. a woman in florida desperate for a generator broke down in tears after learning the last one had been sold. she needed it for her father, who is on oxygen. but when ramone saw the woman crying, he gave her the generator in his cart. >> i'm worry ied about the stor. >> she needed the generator. it's okay. >> there you see them hug iging. she was sobbing. she called him an angel from god. that really is generosity right there. everybody is sort of in the same boat with the storm. you are worry ied and tense and may also have relatives you're worried about with health problems. that would be the worst.

>> maybe somebody else will help him out and get him a generator. a lot of kind souls out there. let's get to tammie souza for the latest on irma's path. >> this is helping to move that ridge of high pressure out a bit. the one that's going to be driving irma out to sea is moving across the mid-part of the country. we could get sprinkles from this system that's moving through. for two days we have been talking about this swirling around and slowly moving off to the east. it brought us heavy rain two days ago and could see a sprinkle tonight. tomorrow morning you're goirng o wake up in the 50s. lock at that 47 in allentown. it's going to be on the chilly side. crisp and fall-like. tomorrow a high only about 71. we're looking for the low 70s and upper 60s in the outlying areas. we'll see some sun.

mid-70s on sunday. still moving off to the west. look at the size of this hurricane. it's bigger than the state of florida and already florida is feeling those outer bands of clouds. right now 34 miles from miami to the eye. the models are taking it right on to the tip of florida. we have to wait and see where the turn occurs. it could be anywhere in a cone that encompasses the entire state. much of south florida is under watches and warnings. all the red you see is primarily the hurricane warnings. the watches are in pink. there's a whole lot of storm surge warnings going up both coasts expecting 5 to 10 feet of water above normal. many of those homes are only at 5 feet above e sea level. they are going to see flooding in many of the downtown areas and water pushing up along the rivers as well. let's take a look at the european model. this has been the spot on model.

it also tracks harvey very well and bring it is in southwest of the tip of florida. they are going to be concerned because it's pushing a lot of water that way and brings it past tampa and by the time we get into monday this is exiting into. atlanta. let's look at the global forecast model. it's in agreement to the same spot. when the models close, this is probably going to be good for the track. same thing takes it up the middle of florida. hitting literally almost every large city. we see tampa, orlando, it's going to be hitting miami and up to jacksonville. what's what it it's going to do for us is the hurricane behind it very powerful. they are kicking up immense swells in the b atlanta. so we have a high risk of dangerous rip currents. that's through the weekend.

they are going to be from 4 to 6-foot waves. but you really needs to be very careful if you're out at the beach. probably not an option for the next three or four days. tomorrow we're looking at the 0s. mid-70s with sunshine and low clouds. cooler in delaware and jersey shore. and on monday, we're going to be in the mid-70s once again. to this now, eagles fans were bummed when the birds traded away the team's magic man. now it turns out that trade may have just saved his life. also an attempted kidnapping at a local day care. how two workersed a man after he charged into that facility and grabbed two infants. that story is new at 5:00.

gentry of the band montgomery gentry died this afternoon in a helicopter crash. >> he was supposed to perform tonight in south engineer e see. cydney long has been at the krsh site all afternoon. you just learned new information from a witness. >> reporter: that's right, a witness who is a friend of the pilot and who got to meet some of the band members earlier this afternoon at the flying w text us and said he washed troy gentry goat get on to the helicopter and a few shorten minutes later he watched it crash. gentry and the pilot became stuck up in the air and police knew this chopper was in trouble. >> twisted metal is all that's left of the helicopter. the witness watched it go down. >> traumatized is a light word. it was just a horrible thing to watch happen. >> reporter: his heart was still

racing. he was excited for his friend that stayed behind and met troy gentry. they were set to as ambulances and police flew by him, he got another call. >> i went back to work and brian called me and said this is horrible. i'm at the airport and evan is up in the helicopter with the lead singer of montgomery gentry and the throttle stuck. there's a malfunction. >> reporter: he raced back to the flying w. paramedics were there. the two were just going up for a joyride when something went wrong. >> e we didn't get much information. what that meant, we didn't know. we were responding up there in the event for a crash landing. and as i said, it did not even make it to the airport. it wept down just short of the airport. >> police stopped people shaken by the news of his death.

police and prosecutors will assist the ntsb with an investigation. >> as we were approaching the scene, the helicopter came down on the side. we could see it was coming down just too hot and too heavy. >> reporter: now at last check with medford police, the deceased pilots, his remains were still in the helicopter. we also know that first responders had to use heavy equipment to get troy gentry out of the wreckage. music fans stopped here earlier today. some of which had planned to attend the concert later tonight. police just announced moments ago that they will answer additional questions about the helicopter crash and we will certainly have the latest information coming up on nbc 10 news at 6:00. for now, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. shot in the face while protecting his 2-year-old daughter. a philadelphia man
