flooding. here's what we know right now. more than 3 million homes and businesses don't have power. search and rescue missions will start tomorrow morning with crews going door to door. the storm is making its way north after battering southern florida. here's nbc 10 national correspondent sarah from tampa. >> reporter: with winds topping 130 miles per hour, hurricane irma is roaring up the florida coast. a lengthy assault with no area seemingly safe. >> it was such a wild ride. >> reporter: flooding streets and daring rescues. a couple tried to ride it out on their sailboat. >> it's my home. i was doing everything i could to save it. and it got out of hand. >> reporter: the storm thrashed the florida keys, now closed to reentry. bridges and homes inundated by water. then ripping away to the mainland, topping cranes in

miami, tearing off roofs in sarasota, leaving millions without power. in tampa, waters pulled back dramatically ahead of expected storm surge. the area hasn't taken a direct hit in nearly a century. >> we know our number is coming. this is that day. we think we have a good plan, but you never know until you get into the middle of it. >> reporter: nowhere in the state spared, with a 400-mile wide storm with millions still in its path. >> for local residents with relatives and friends in florida, the wait to see what irma will bring has been agonizing. jen mortens said her dad, stem mop and two siblings were evacuated from their new modular home in lakeland. they took up shelter with her grandfather. she's watching and worrying from south philadelphia. >> there's nothing i can do from here to help them, and that in itself is another frustrating

feeling where i feel like all i can do is watch and hope they're okay. >> in asten, the martellas just escaped, getting one of the last flights out of sarasota. the winds caused at least two construction cranes to collapse in miami. there are more than 20 cranes still standing in the city. the equipment is able to sustain high winds, but it's the arm of the cranes that pose danger. city official s warned everyone living near the cranes to find shelter away from the construction. our coverage continues from the suburbs of miami, a city where 70% of residents don't have power. tim furlong spent the entire day there capturing irma's wrath and the damage it caused. >> reporter: so you might have heard hurricane irma went west of miami and "spared our area." here where we are, if this is sparing us, i don't know what to tell you. this is just the parking lot of

our hotel in miramar, west of miami. trees down. look at this part over here. just literally kind of ripped in half. over to this side, there are trees that were weakened by the rain and came up by the root ball. they're now blocking cars and the parking lot is koefred with debris. we also went driving tonight and looked at areas that had problems. we found obstacle courses out on the road and tree guts, if you will, palm frons everywhere. they have ponds around their houses and golf courses, so that water is way up. we're not really out of the woods yet. but you can see, even though the storm went west, we have a lot of problems here on the east coast of florida. tim furlong, "nbc 10 news." >> tim, thank you. irma not finished yet.

let's bring in meteorologist erika martin for a look at irma's impact and what's next for florida. >> what i like is that tim mentioned the east coast is being impacted greatly by irma, and that's because of the mere size of it. you can see here the outer bands of this massive hurricane moving northward across ft. pierce, orlando and daytona beach. this is what we call the outer band, and this is why we're seeing several tornado watches and warnings, and several funnel clouds that have touched down, officially tornadoes throughout the evening hours. now, tracking irma as it continues to work its way from south to north towards georgia, we can see by monday morning at 8:00 a.m., expected wind speeds 75 miles per hour. so at that point, it would have become or will become a category

police say a man struck several parked cars before hitting and killing a 73-year-old man. no word yet on what may have led to that crash. a shooting in trenton has wounded a 23-year-old man. police were called to the intersection of hudson and baird streets just before 2:00 this afternoon. the victim was shot once and is expected to survive. police say he was standing outside his car when the gunfire erupted. no one else was injured. philadelphia, a woman is dead and police are on the hunt for her killer. the shooting happened near 39th and aspen streets in the city. a 59-year-old woman died after she was shot in the chest, back, and arm. police tell us the victim was on her phone with her husband when she was shot, and that he heard her arguing with a man before the gunfire erupted. paying up. a local city has to shell out millions for what unfolded

he needed more than 200 stitches after he was bitten by a police dog. a grand jury ended up clearing the officers of any wrongdoing. running to remember. hundreds of men and women took part in the tenth annual 9/11 hero's run this morning. the event at cooper river park raises money for the travis man onfoundation. the organization provides families of fallen heroes and veterans the opportunity to heal through community service projects all over the world. in greenvilleage, there was vegan cooking demos and hybrid cars for people to try out. it was all part of the 12th annual green fest philly's celebration. the event draws thousands of people, all powered by solar panels.

florida, hurricane irma took a heavy kol toll on the caribbean. days later, people there still do not have power and there's plenty to clean up. more than a thousand miles from the u.s. mainland, residents fear help is not coming fast enough. nbc 10's andrea klein thomas shows us how one local organization is trying to change that. >> helping you inload and we'll weigh everything. >> reporter: her vehicle was stuffed with donated supplies to be sent to the virgin islands. >> a mountain of medical supplies. >> reporter: volunteers unloaded, tagged, and weighed each box and bog. >> there's a beautiful, magical community that couldn't possibly exist the way it does anywhere else in the world. it's gone. it's really hard.

>> reporter: when hurricane irma made landfall last week, st. thomas and st. john took the brunt of the storm's deadly wrath. winds topped 150 miles per hour. >> my friend's houses and boats, destroyed. it's a hard thing to wrap your mind around. >> reporter: days later, there's no power. cell phone service is scarce. debris is everywhere and safety continues to be a concern. >> we don't want to take away from what other people are going through in other parts of the world. but we don't want the virgin islands to be forgotten about. >> reporter: there's no forgetting at the northeast philadelphia airport, where two storage units are being filled, and more donations are on the way. >> we want to be there, but we're doing what we can. that's all. >> reporter: andrea klein-thomas, "nbc 10 news." more than 150 employees with new jersey's pse&g are heading to florida to help restore

power. they will stay between three and four weeks. delmarva power crews are also heading south. nbc 10 was there as 120 employees left newark this morning. pico crews are answering the call, as well. more than 200 employees and contractors left this morning. they will join the other crews to help with restoration efforts. pico is preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best. in our area tonight, dogs rescued from hurricane irma. these animals arrived at providence animal center in media earlier this morning from florida, after they're evaluated, they will be ready for new homes later this week. they were enjoying some sunshine today. these flamingos could not evacuate their homes at busch garden in tampa bay. instead, they were marched to a safer spot indoors. busch gardens is home to 12,000

animals. they have a comprehensive weather plan. tonight, central florida, including orlando, getting hit hard. >> oh, yeah. i'm so happy they're taking care of the animals, that's for sure, but they're getting hit really hard in central florida. orlando with several reports of tornadoes and watches. locally, however, we have to focus on how fortunate we are here. mostly clear skies, area of high pressure, keeping everything ideal for tonight. current temperature, 62 degrees. and we're seeing northwest winds at 3 miles per hour. in and around the philly metro area, seeing a chillier night in the forecast. 75 degrees, 5 degrees below the average of 80. but not that bad. we saw plenty of sunshine. bustleton at 60. parkwood at 58 degrees. and chestnut hill currently at

54. as we go north and west of philadelphia, cooler for the lehigh valley. bethlehem at 52, witheand jerse right now actually 53. mt. laurel 56 degrees, and florence, a little warmer at 61. robinsville at 58 degrees. and hopewell township at 54 degrees. the next time we meet up, i do have your jersey shore and delaware forecast. let's take a look at what's going on as far as satellite and radar. mostly dry conditions, hour by hour forecast, that's what i mean by mostly dra. when you see clouds, it's a little moisture in the atmosphere. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, notice we're not seeing much going on. so a great start to our monday morning. we will need the sweaters. upper 50s and low 60s.

and it's not until tuesday until we see clouds from the southwest and northeast. it's really just clouds, i don't think we'll see showers. possibly a late sprinkle tuesday or late wednesday. but i'll leave us now with partly cloudy skies for your tuesday. the next three days look really nice. temperatures upper 70s for tuesday. and on wednesday, low 80s, and i do have developing clouds on wednesday, because as i mentioned, we very well could see some remnant moisture making it from the southwest to the northeast into our region here across the delaware valley. over the p.a. suburbs, 76 degrees, your expected high on tuesday. a pair of 7s on wednesday. lehigh valley, mid 70s on tuesday. adding the showers on wednesday. delaware, conditions are going to be nice. i do like this forecast, ted, because locally things look really nice, even though unfortunately, of course, here it is, tracking hurricane irma. category 2 right now, and we're

>> meteorologist erika martin continues to track hurricane irma's path. what's going on right now? >> right now, i stopped our satellite and radar loop to our current time, and you can see the outer bands right now of irma. that's what is affecting central florida, the east coast of florida. that's where our tim furlong is right now. and he was talking about how active and threatening the weather was. we're seeing several tornado warnings and watches that have beenish sh issued through sever parts of florida, orlando already getting several reports of tornadoes, as well. so this is what we're monitoring for. you do have to follow us on social media for more updates on that. in addition, download the free nbc 10 app for more updates. we'll keep you updated for the next several hours as irma continues to work her way from south to north across florida.

so right now, irma is currently a category 2 hurricane, and as it continues to work its way towards georgia, it will eventually become a category 1. it does not mean that it will not be just as threatening. we're seeing several reports of power outages. 3.5 million to 4 million people without power right now. so again, download that free app for updates. we'll continue working hurricane irma northward and see how it continues to work its way through the tennessee valley. now, i do think we're going to get some remnant moisture. notice right here on wednesday right around midnight. we start to see a southerly and southwesterly influence in the delaware valley. so we'll get some moisture late tuesday into wednesday. but for right now, i'm going to leave with us a mix of sun and clouds on tuesday, the same deal for wednesday. and we'll be track thing closely

for you. because right now it mainly looks like clouds. again, we very well could get some remnant moisture moving into our area. the ten-day forecast looks hike this. we'll keep it in the upper 70s on monday, no excuses tomorrow morning or later this morning. we do have a nice start to the day, even though it will be a little chilly. keep the jackets and the sweaters handy. we'll get warmer by tuesday into wednesday. 79 is the expected high on tuesday. wednesday, the expected high is 80. we'll keep it in the 80s for the next couple of days. even though we may see a little bit of a fluctuation. again, the big story right now is that even though hurricane irma is a category two, because of the mass and power, it's affecting the entire peninsula, and lots of power outages and lots of tornado warnings and in fact, funnel clouds.
