death. all hands on deck. how everyone from nuns to celebrities are joining the recovery from hurricane irma. right now at 11. students exposed to a dangerous drug. and police in delaware county say one of their own parents is to blame. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> police say a mother dropped 29 bags of a deadly opioid roigt in the parking lot of her child's school. nbc10 was live at the school tonight. the school discussed this incident with parents tonight. >> parents were reassured that staff is doing everything it can to make sure students are safe. parents were alarmed it was found in a parking lot. and now parents been charged. >> reporter: it's not the back to school night parents expected. one that touched on reading,

writing and opioid. >> shocking. >> reporter: more than two dozen bags of the sen thetic opioid for found last week during the second day of school. williams left it behind in the school parking lot. the 29 year-old daughter goes to the school. >> it's scary. to find out that it's here. it's so close to us. >> reporter: as parent walk to the first school event since the discoveries. some express concern. >> it's concerning. especially the amount of drug they found. >> reporter: others applaud the school and police response. >> the school took great care of the kids. none of the kids. >> reporter: anywhere near it. they called the police. >> a drug free school zone stood feet from where it was found. a drug that is 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine. police say put children, parents and staff at risk. >> you don't think it will be that close. >> i spoke with williams attorney tonight. he had no comment.

williams is out on bail. case dismissed. a judge dropped all criminal charge against the engineer in ab am track derailment that killed eight people. he faced several charges including involuntary manslaughter and reck less endangerment. citing a lack of evidence. saying it was an accident rather than negligence. it was at the control bh the train crashed in a may of 2015. going 106 on a 50 miles per hour curve. >> he's a good man, his heartbreaks for the loss of life in this case and the tragedy o that occurred. but he's innocent of criminal charges. >> he was arrested back in may after the family of one of the victims filed a private criminal complaint. tonight a lot of questions surround death of a college student. and lacrosse recruit in lee high valley. mcray williams was rushed to the

hospital sunday night and died the next day. williams was only a freshman in easten. as brandon hudson shows us. hundreds of students gather tonight to honor his memory. >> as mystery surrounds the death, college students turn to each other for comfort. a large crowd gathered in front of the student center on the quad to remember williams. a freshman lacrosse recruit. >> no one is dealing with this alone. you saw evidence of that. >> reporter: williams was a stapd out athlete in the boston area. in a letter to students. the headmaster said the 19 year-old died after suffering a severe head injury in a fall. the lee high county coroner found in sign of injury. and said he didn't have suicidal tendencies or any known health problems. the college is cooperating with investigators working to determine if alcohol played a factor. >> at tonight's vigil. members of the lacrosse team led the walk into the center of

campus. they stood silently. then walked into the student center to meet with counsellors. >> college campus this time of year is full of optimism. energy and enthusiasm. i would say all of that has been tempered. dampened. >> reporter: a spokesman will work with the family and the time of grief. an ouautopsy will be performed tomorrow. toxicology reports won't be ready for weeks. for the second time in two weeks, president trump will visit an area ravaged by a major hurricane. the white house says the president will travel to florida on thursday. but didn't give any specific location. a lot of people in florida saw the damage from the hurricane for the first time today. airports reopened and many curfews were lifted. but the recovery is just beginning. officials in key west fear up to 25% of homes there were destroyed. and about half of florida still without power. one woman is doing her part to

clean things up. >> that is sister margaret ann. miami-dade police took this video as she grabbed that chain saw there and got to work. to try her best to help with the clean up. >> she may have scared irma away. that storm is finally starting to fizzle. >> could bring us rain. let's get the latest from tammie souza. who's been keeping an eye on this storm. making its way from the south to our area. nothing like they saw down south in florida. >> irma has been such a nightmare. >> irma has been such a terrible nightmare. it has been an incredible journey. this came off the african coast as a wave. about 15 days before it made land fall in the keys. that was back toward the 27th or 28th of august. quite a long journey for the

particular hurricane. let's take a look at what's going on. this was about the last 48 hours. it was tightly wound up and there it goes. expands out. it looks like something that we refer to as an extra tropical storm. you can see moving slowly this is rain beginning move up towards our area. moving through virginia, and washington. even a few sprinkles reported last hour in southern parts of delaware. this is what we're watching into tomorrow morning. the rain coming in. this is going to be light scattered shoirs. this is not the heavy deadly downpours. it will be with us for a while. we'll talk about this. we'll talk about what's going on with jose and i have your weekend forecast. we know irma did serious damage to islands across the caribbean. a lot of people from our area experienced that devastation firsthand. including radio personality lady

b and her partner dj touch tone. they describe the vicious attack on st. martin. and the day long struggle to get home. >> police arrest a teenager accused of groping women in a popular park. authorities say 19 year-old harris touched women inappropriately on several occasions. dating back to last fall. in one case, they say harris expos exposed himself to a woman. he's charged with unlawful sexual contact, sexual harassment and indecent exposure. a man died trying to save his wife from a fire. he didn't realize she had already escaped the flames. that fire started just before midnight last night on west 36th street. family members tell us the victim monroe got out first. but couldn't find his wife. he went back trying to find her. he didn't make it back out. his wife was treated

is titled all power to all people. the mural arts program which unvailed the statue hopes it can act as a counter balance to the rizzo statue. there have been several incidents of vandalism in recent months. some are calling for the removal. because they say rizzo's tactics were racist. we asked mural arts about the new statue placement. >> the idea is to add something to that picture. to value stories of solidarity and social justice. and make that meaningful. right in the heart of the city. >> the statue is the work of artist hank thomas. chester continue teen accused of threatening students on social mode media is facing charges. charged as a juvenile. accused of posting racial threats towards freshman on a deleted instagram account.

thafts back on august 27. late in the day. it became an area of low pressure, and look at it. it jogged north. became a tropical storm. kept going north and took the fateful turn to the southwest. became a major hurricane. whipped through the caribbean, leeward islands. on passed cuba. making land fall in the united states. over the keys. that was on september 10. and right now it's just a disorganized area of low pressure in the tennessee valley. in fact it's covering probably about 11, 12 states. it's just a giant swath of rain. more like a typical storm system that we would see crossing the country. a few spotty showers pop up over night. in fact, your hour by hour forecast shows that we're okay during the late night hours. early tomorrow morning we'll see rain showers maybe even thunderstorms pass through. this will be on and off for the next couple days. here's wednesday, here's thursday.
