they are expected to be okay. authorities say the shooting was especially hard for first responders. many of whom have children at the school. they got the news on the radio that their kids were in an active shooter situation. that's a lot to take from a first responder's perspective. it will be a while before they recover. >> situation that was difficult for everyone involved. a motive for the shooting is unknown. as we get more information we'll relay it to you. live in the breaking news center. jacqueline london. nbc10 news. new at 5:00. we are hearing from the sister of a man killed just blocks from his home. she is pleading for help to find the gunman in a case that's stumped police for months. we spoke exclusively with the

victim's sister. >> reporter: erin this is where derek mills was found shot in the head on the sidewalk just a few blocks away from his house. his friends and family and homicide detectives are looking for information to bring his killer to justice. derek mills was a man larger than life in the eyes of family and coworkers. >> we called him the gentle giant. >> extremely gentle. very compassionate and loving. >> reporter: mills picture and name will be forever connected to the concession stand where he worked for more than 20 years at the wells fargo center. it was on the night he tended the grill during a sixers and flyers game when the 57-year-old father and grandfather was murdered on his way home from work. >> it was extremely devastating. >> reporter: a gunman shot him in the head during the robbery in logan. police are looking for this man captured on surveillance video stalking mills before the march 20th shooting. notice the way he walks.

september 1st. >> i tried to negotiate and told him, we are employees, we don't have access to that portion. since i wasn't by myself and had the kids there, i got nervous. he threatened to shoot us in the head if i didn't open it up. >> reporter: once the safe was opened nick says the crook wasn't satisfied. >> it's like all we have is change money. coins, quarters, nickels for the register. i was like, have that if you want. it was like 50 pounds worth of coins. >> reporter: the guy had a plastic shopping bag. he was hoping the weight of the money would break the bag. >> lucky it ripped the bag on the way out. i got most of the coins back. i followed a trail down olive street. >> reporter: so far they haven't found the guy. police think he is responsible for a holdup at this perkins in late summer where the store manager was forced to the ground at gunpoint. >> the only thing we saw was that he had a -- like a brownish reddish beard or goatee that

stuck under his mask. >> reporter: police say it's similar to the gun and the tiny strikes. >> hands, body covered in all black. same duration of time, moments in, moments out. >> reporter: investigators are not sure if he is making an escape with a friend in a waiting car or gets away running. >> he was a big guy. 6'1", 220. >> reporter: everything on this man is covered as you saw from the pictures. there is a silver gun. probably police think someone out there who knows what this guy is up to. maybe he came home with a large amount of cash or you recognize the black clothing. you are asked to call warminster police. tied, beaten and robbed. that's what police say happened to an elderly roxborough man. the victim's family says his former neighbor is the attacker. police say the elderly man and his sister woke up to find an intruder in their home on hill

road around 5:30 this morning. the intruder atacttacked the ma and tied him up before taking off with the sister's purse and car. we're told the intruder used to live next-door to the victims and has stolen the car before. they say it's usually a quiet place to live. >> nothing ever happens. you hear crickets. it's not -- nothing really happens here ever. >> the suspect has not been caught. police are looking for a 2015 silver kia forte with a pennsylvania license plate. we're learning more about the death of a lafayette college freshman and college freshman mccrae williams. he died of blunt force head injuries. how he got the injuries is still under investigation. police are also looking into whether alcohol played a role. lafayette public safety officers found williams when they responded to a medical emergency outside a dorm on campus sunday afternoon. he was pronounced dead at a hospital 24 hours later.

students say it has been a tough week on campus. >> a lot of the professors just said, you know, like this isn't a normal day. i know that a lot of you are hurting and we can try and say this is a normal day and go on with our lives but it's not. >> counseling is available for students. we reached out to williams' family. they did not want to make a comment at this time. the gunman who shot a man in the leg in francisville is still on the run tonight. roads around 15th and popullar streets were closed during the morning commute. the roads have since been reopened and the victim is expected to survive. one person is in the hospital after a bullet came flying into a home in upper darby. the shooting happened on wild avenue. that's around 9:30 last night. no word on the victim's condition. tonight police are looking for that shooter. philadelphia police continue to investigate the death of a man struck by a septa train this

a group of local college students is taking their fight to keep the deferred action for childhood arrivals program or daca, to university officials. >> no justice, no peace. no justice, no peace. >> about a dozen students gathered outside of the library on the university of pennsylvania campus. they want the university to use its resources to the fullest to support daca students and their families. protesters also demanded for students to reach out to local representatives. according to organizers, this will be one of many protests to

come. house speaker paul ryan is weighing in on the daca debate today. while he said the president was right to phase out the program, ryan said deporting those already covered is, quote, not in our nation's interests. a berks county father is charged with the murder of his 4-month-old son. police arrested joshua leas. his son died after suffering injuries that caused his brain to bleed. he faces several charges including first degree murder. a two-month-long investigation wrapped up in mercer county. investigators say six grams of crack cocaine and 45 bricks of heroin were found inside allen harper's trenton home. he faces multiple charges including possession of a controlled dangerous substance. parish whitmore also faces similar charges. just in the last 30 minutes we've learned two more people

have died after a florida nursing home lost air-conditioning after hurricane irma. that brings the total now to eight deaths. the nursing home in hollywood, florida, was evacuated today. to the south, in key west. drone video shows us the extent of the damage that irma left behind. search and rescue teams are starting to reach parts of the area. jay gray is in the keys tonight with more on what recovery crews are up against. >> reporter: across the florida keys. >> it's a mess. it's one big mess. >> reporter: a mess that stretches for miles. >> every door is gone. the roof is gone. >> reporter: most everything that was life before the storm here, gone. saws and front loaders are the weapons of choice for soldiers on the front lines of the recovery mission here. more than 8,000 national guard troops moving into the hardest hit areas. >> it's devastation out here. a lot of people are stranded

without power, food, phone. they can't get in contact with their families. >> reporter: flooding continues to be an issue to the north. governor rick scott toured the area by boat today. >> trying to move assets to those affected as fast as possible. people are hurting. we have to get this done. >> reporter: one of the biggest problems, power. millions don't have it. >> we need our power back. >> reporter: 8 people dayed aie a nursing home. >> most of the patients were treated for respiratory distress. dehydration and heat related issues. >> reporter: extreme conditions. another shock from mother nature in the wake of irma. the heat, just like the storm, can't break the spirit or determination of survivors here. >> this is what we do in the keys. we help other people. >> reporter: and so they continue to push forward because they know what's buried under all of this rubble.

st. pete communication has been key. roto calls tell people when the power is back on. that's a big comfort. my family is down there too. hopefully everybody is getting the information they need. here at home the information we need, the remnants of irma they're not devastating but disgusting. sou soupy out there. we drop from 73 to 72. not a lot because of the cloud cover locking in the warmth we have. we'll see pockets of fog wafting around and scattered showers will be possible as well. for tomorrow in fair mont, 80. pretty much the same thing. clouds with a passing shower. maybe even an isolated thunderstorm. allentown, you will see 78. robsensville, 81. wildwood 80. dover, 80. temperatures will be close to

average. but we are still going to deal with all these showers. the leftover center of what was once the powerful hurricane irma swirling around the ohio and tennessee valleys. it's starting to move to the north and east. we got one wave of showers in our direction. there will be more to come. we will be in the cloud cover for much of the night and tomorrow. this is what we're looking at right now on our doppler radar. nothing going on. spotty showers in south jersey. otherwise it's the drizzly, damp cloud cover. the winds continue out of the south. and we'll have spotty showers. we'll make it into the upper 70s tomorrow. spotty showers in the afternoon. we go into friday. friday we have spotty showers. hovering close to 80. saturday we'll start with clouds and maybe a spotty shower before we clear out a bit. how much rain? it's not too impressive, but if we are under a thunderstorm,

maybe an inch or so in philadelphia. maybe .3 inches in mount pocono. it's hard to tell where the thunderstorms will set up. just be prepared. somebody will get a little bit more rain than the rest of us. moderate risk along the beaches through next week due to the huge swells that were generated not only by irma but we have hurricane josé out there right now. josé generating very large swells. that's something to be aware of. josé has 75-mile-an-hour winds. it's expected to make a turn to the north. it was expected to turn into the atlantic. the new cone takes it to tropical storm status. look at what the spaghetti models do. they straighten out. a few of them bringing it toward philadelphia. don't get excited because this is more than a week away. september 18th, next monday. perhaps a tropical storm if the european model is right this far out. headed toward new york.

calls for the rizzo statue to come down. nbc10's aaron baskerville joining us live. >> the new addition has plenty of people talking tonight. >> reporter: so many people have been stopping by this work of art. like you said, we did have a chance to talk to the artist today. he is in new york. he gets into town friday. this is what everybody has been coming to see, people have been taking photos, selfies. in talking to the artist he says it's about this right here, it says "all power to all people." if you walk around it, you can see how close it is to the frank rizzo statue, probably 50 feet or so. the statue has been the center of controversy, people demanding it come down. in talking to the artist today, he tells me he just wanted that fist to be close to city hall. it's about 50 feet away from the statue of former philadelphia mayor frank rizzo. and there is now all sorts of

controversy surrounding this work of art. the description says it's a fist for all people. >> it's not. it's black. so that's what it is. it's black power. >> reporter: some believe it's in direct response to the rizzo statue, after weeks of demonstrations calling for it to be taken down. nbc10 talked with the artist this afternoon, reiterating this location had nothing to do with rizzo. he made this decision more than a year ago with mural arts philadelphia. >> reporter: would you ever take that down if people were upset about that piece of art? >> we surely would enter into a conversation, but i hope that people would come on saturday and hear from the artist. >> reporter: the artist told us he understands why it is stirring up all sorts of emotions given the times we live in now. he wanted to celebrate an element of black culture, not exclude anyone. some of those stopping and taking photos today are on his side. >> this is a race sensitive

the latest video out of georgia. windows blown out. trees toppled in the atlanta area. there is promising info on the power front. the number of georgia residents without power is down to half a million. at its peak there were a million and a half outages monday. new details about president trump's planned trip to florida tomorrow. the white house today says the president will visit naples and ft. myers, first lady melania trump and vice president pence will accompany the president on the trip. i want to show you this close call on a soaked road in georgia. suddenly irma's rains, wow, and the wind toppled the tree. the driver in front there can't stop in time. the tree slammed the front of the suv, lifting the back up. the driver was shaken but as you can see opened the door, doing just fine. very lucky. maybe a second more and this could have been horrible.

12 hours. we are expecting more scattered showers out there. light winds. we could see some of this fog and low cloud deck throughout the night and into tomorrow. tomorrow morning we'll be kind of comfortable. kind of damp. in the mid 70s. 60s. we'll make it into the mid 70s across much of the area tomorrow with scattered showers. going into friday, scattered showers. we could see low 80s at that point. saturday mainly dry. i won't rule out a leftover shower on saturday as well. i think the weekend does start to improve, however. how much pain, not a whole lot of rain unless you are under one of the heavier bands. the forecast model has over an inch in philadelphia and nothing in allentown. i really think it will be luck of the draw. wherever the showers line up. here is what it shapes up like for the end of the weekend. close to 80, chance of showers on friday. maybe an isolated shower by the time we get into saturday, early in the morning. again, close to 80 degrees. on sunday we expect to see the

mix of sun and clouds, upper 70s, low 80s. if you're going to the umass/temple game, pack the rain slicker. could see a shower overnight. it starts at 7:00. temperatures will be in the 70s. if you're watching the eagles game, and you are, right, we're looking at in kansas city the chance of a shower or thunderstorm. a little bit more humid and sticky there. looking at 83 degrees there with that chance of showers and storms. here is josé. at this point josé is looking like it will veer over to the west and up north. look at this cone. getting ever so much more close to the east coast. the forecast models also bring it there. all the spaghetti models. some of them even into philadelphia and new york. this is more than a week away. your ten-day. 80 tomorrow and friday. 81 sunday, chance of showers tomorrow and saturday and things should quiet down. guys. call it a strange coincidence. >> when it happened once outside
