all of this as police in north hampton county are trying to figure out how the 19-year-old freshman college student died. >> reporter: a source close to the case says easton police have started interviewing students from lafayette college. police know what caused the death of 19-year-old mccrae williams. he died from blunt force head trauma according to the coroner. however, police say it was a, quote, chain of events that led to the freshman's death. if anything criminal is emerging from the ongoing police investigation, they have not yet said. what nbc 10 has learned that williams was at an off-party campus on saturday. multiple sources say he left that party with a female and the woman went back to williams' dorm party with him. it's unclear how long the woman was with williams. sources say over the period of several hours, saturday night into sunday afternoon, williams remained in bed, and it was late on sunday when concern for the 19-year-old led some other students to seek medical help. an ambulance was called to his dorm on sunday, just after 4:00, and williams was taken to a hospital.

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking that threat for rain tonight. glenn? >> yeah, we do see some clouds building up right now, that could lead to some more showers during the evening. b but it looks a lot different than it did at this time yesterday, didn't? it was so foggy, you couldn't even see the skyline. and we do have some showers on radar, but very few. and they are light, they are fast-moving. the one shower here, just about to go into east goshen. looks like it's going to go up into montgomery county. not quite get into philadelphia itself. there are more showers up in northern pennsylvania. some could make their way across, into, let's say berks county, and lehigh valley tonight. a couple more showers near washington. so we're not out of the woods. but it's certainly not a real stormy end to the day. this future weather computer may be overdoing it a little bit, showing these scattered showers and maybe even some thunderstorms over the next few hours, and then everything dies down, as we head toward

midnight. the temperature now at 81. we've already been to 83. so it's feeling like summer, the humidity is up there. and what we're going to be seeing during the night, well, the temperature's not going to go down a whole lot, because it's so humid. it's going to stay like that all night, very few places getting rained on. we'll see if we can keep that up through the weekend, coming up. president donald trump is praising the recovery efforts in florida following hurricane irma. >> the president touched down in ft. myers today, along with the first lady and vice president mike pence. the three toured irma damage and helped distribute lunches to people affected by the storm. >> we love these people and we're going to be back and we're going to help and the job that everybody has done in terms of first responder and everybody has been incredible. >> the president also received a hurricane recovery briefing from fema and coast guard officials.

>> emergency workers are working around the clock to make sure elderly residents are safe following the deaths of eight people in a sweltering nursing home. they died after hurricane irma knocked o o eed out the air-conditioning. an investigation is underway into what happened inside the facility afterward. in the meantime, firefighters are evacuating numerous assisted living facilities near orlando that have been without power since irma. and right now, the help is on hold for many victims of hurricane irma. some south jersey organizations say the donations they've collected cannot be delivered. nbc 10's south jersey bureau reporter cydney long is joining us live from mullica hill to explain why. cydney? >> reporter: the rotary here in mullica hill has been in close touch with their rotary partners in florida. they were raring to get there. they had supplies and had raised $5,000, but they were then told with little access to gasoline and other volunteer organizations becoming stranded across florida, they were told,

please don't come. from drone video over the devastated florida keys, where one in four houses is ruined, to millions still without power, the devastation in florida stretches from miami to orlando, tampa, and jacksonville. bud doesn't have family in florida, but he had his heart set on answering the manpower need there. >> gas cans, extension cords, all kinds of things. we had a whole list. and we were ready and i just am very sad. >> reporter: it was this photo, seniors stranded in waist-deep water inside their nursing home during harvey that compelled bud to organize a local rotary deployment to florida. his mission, to connect with nursing homes and assisted living facilities to deliver generators, cleaning supplies, whatever was needed. >> if something happens in florida, i'm going to do something this time. and i don't want any person that's very fragile in our society like people in nursing homes to have to go through anything like that. >> reporter: 12 volunteers were set to shove off from south

jersey saturday at 7:00 in the morning, but the mission ran out of fuel, literally. >> we couldn't get the fuel. we had concerns that with the volunteer group, that i felt for their safety that if i cannot get them back and forth safely. >> reporter: with massive lines at the pump from south florida to south carolina, their partners on the ground there warned, don't risk it. >> we called naples police non-emergency line. they said, it's very difficult. people are stranded all over around here. and, even though we need the help, we really suggest you not coming right now. >> now, verfaile helps seniors prepare for their retirement. he did become emotional during our interview today, his heart also broken to hear that eight senior citizens died at that hollywood, florida, nursing home. he is inside working the phones now. he is trying to get a small fuel tanker, so they, in fact, can get to florida to help some time soon. we're live in mullica hill, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news.

price for the hurricane aftermath. now to a developing story in north carolina, where there has been an explosion at the army's largest base in the country. that blast happened today during a training exercise at ft. bragg. eight soldiers have been injured and taken to the hospital at the army base, but it's unclear just how serious their injuries are. president trump says there's no deal yet, but he's moving closer to one with democrats that would protect hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants. >> so we met last night with, as you know, schumer, morosi, aemp pelosi, and a whole group. we're close, but we have to get massive border security. >> he made those remarks after taking to twitter to deny claims that he had reached an agreement on the daca program. daca prevented deportation of undocumented immigrants brought to the u.s. as children by their parents. the president tweeted this, this morning. no deal was made last night on

daca. massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. would be subject to vote. earlier this month, mr. trump announced he would end the daca program in six months. >> senate democratic leader chuck schumer and house democratic leader nancy pelosi announced late wednesday that a deal had been reached to extend protections for so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers, shielded by the daca program. the leaders also announced both sides agreed to work out a u.s./mexico border security package, but it would not include the president's border wall. but the president pushed back against that idea. he tweeted this morning, the wall, which is already under construction in the form of new renovation of old and cyst exex fences and walls, will continue to be built. >> aundrea cline-thomas spoke with local d.r.e.a.m.ers about the continuing confusion in washington. she'll have their reaction all new at 5:00. the man accused in a murder that rocked the mainland earlier this morning says he still has

to hire a lawyer. derek rawlins appeared in court this morning three weeks after being captured in georgia. a judge agreed to delay the case for two weeks after rawlins told him he was still in the process of hiring a private attorney. rawlins is accused of shooting and killing john lee in haverford township back in july. the apparent random shooting shocked the community. he also allegedly fired shots at two people in the overbrook neighborhood hours before the murder. a deadly crash caused big backups during this morning's commute on i-95 in wilmington. sky force 10 flew over this crash around the frawley stadium around 7:30. one car was smashed and looks like it caught fire there, clearly. the other car also has front end damage and its door was ripped off. southbound lanes were closed for hours while crews cleaned all this up. at least one person died in this crash. state police are investigating. a live look over the

controversial statue of frank rizzo. the monument was the scene of another flare-up today as the city works to figure out its feat. police blocked the statue with their bikes this morning after several people showed up with flyers. there have been renewed calls to tear the statue down. those calls coming from people who say that rizzo treated the black community unfairly during his time as police commissioner and mayor. an accusation his supporters deny. the man who created this mural arts program says plans to put it there were in the works long before the new calls for the rizzo statue to come down. ♪ i'm standing here all day smoot ♪ ♪ biggest heartache in town >> country music stars came together to say good-bye to one of their own nearly a week after he was killed in a helicopter crash in south jersey. family, friends, and music legends celebrating the life of

eddie when they would hit this stage, whether it was here or the ryman, and how many people, you could tell, came just to see them. >> reporter: gentry died last friday in a helicopter crash in burlington county. he and montgomery were scheduled to perform in south jersey. prior to the concert, gentry accepted the invitation of a pilot to take a ride and tour the site. a preliminary report by the ntsb points to engine problems shortly after takeoff. ♪ i am a poor >> reporter: at the memorial, friends described gentry as a family man and a kid at heart who loved adventure. >> wake surfing, jetboard flying, snow skiing, fun-loving, batman-obsessed, god-fearing, true blue southern rock country boy from the wildcat country in the bluegrass state of kentucky. we lost a good one, but he's here with us forever. >> 50-year-old gentry leaves behind a wife and two daughters. he was a supporter of the

make-a-wish foundation and the uso. in 2009, he received the academy of country music's humanitarian award. i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. >> rosemary, thank you. now to the latest on that deadly high school shooting in washington state we first brought you as breaking news yesterday. friends of the suspect say he was obsessed with previous school shootings and that he brought notes at the beginning of the school year, saying he was going to do something stupid and might get killed or jailed. police say the teenager killed a classmate who confronted him in a hallway of the school near spokane. three others were wounded before a custodian stopped the shooter. here at home, new details on the search for the intruder who tied up and robbed a 75-year-old man inside this roxborough home. police today announced they're looking for 21-year-old mark mclaughlin. the victim's sister was asleep inside the home during yesterday's attack. investigators say mclaughlin made off with her car and her purse. and family members say

mclaughlin is a former neighbor and the victim tried to help him in the past. philadelphia city council members returned from their summer break today, but their first session was quickly interrupted by a group of activists. the activists were from the group called "philly for real justice." it's an organization calling for police reform and a better relationship between the black communities and law enforcement. the sheriff's office says five people were cited for disorderly conduct. time is running out before pennsylvania runs out of money. lawmakers have until tomorrow to pass a funding plan. and if they don't, the state treasurer tells nbc 10 he won't bail them out to pay their bills. the house narrowly apeproved a funding package last night, but it's opposed by governor wolffe and the governor says the state will run out of money tomorrow without a spending plan in place. the first bill that would not be paid is a $2 million medicaid payment to insurance providers.

lawmakers have been working three months to close the state's $2.2 billion budget gap. in atlantic county, a memorial service was held for former state senator and former atlantic city mayor, jim wheaa . whelan died last month from a heart attack. his family asks for donations to the south university foundation in memory of jim whelan. there are new developments in the historic breach that has compromised the personal information of nearly half of americans. the federal trade commission today announced it's investigating how the credit rating agency equifax handled the breach. equifax says a web server flaw in its software led to the cyber attack and that up to 143 million people in the country might have been impacted. a local cybersecurity expert says you should act now to reduce your risk of identity theft. >> apparently, equifax knew about it at the end of july but

no such thing today. 81 right now, it's gotten up to 83. and we have a fair amount of clouds out there, but it's not totally overcast and we certainly don't have the fog now. the ocean temperature is 72 and we've got a slight wind off the ocean or not enough of a wind to cool us down more. 76 at cape may point. 77 in stone harbor. 76 in upper township and summer's point and 75 in wholegate. inland, though, it's 79, in woodbine, some of these places did reach 80 degrees today. now, we have a shower, just east of westchester. it's not a big one, moving to the northeast near radner. we have to go searching for them today. there aren't a whole lot of them. you can see, there it is. we have another shower area from the delaware beaches to near wildwood. that's also moving to the northeast. it may move up the coast a little bit, but most of us are

not seeing rain and most of us will not see rain during the night tonight. futurecast shows just some isolated showers, maybe a little bit more than that later this evening down to the south. but we start off the day tomorrow, dry, a fair amount of sunshine. it's warm, it's humid, and some isolated showers develop in the afternoon. not too impressive, is it? then as we go to saturday, a little more moisture, a little more cloudiness. showers pop up a little sooner. and then we get more of them than we'll be getting in the next couple of days. so looks like saturday as the greatest threat of showers around, but still, it's not going to be a rainy day. there's florida and there's jose, pretty much in the same spot that it was in yesterday, that it's been in for a week. but it's going to be gradually

injured hawk who escaped the wrath of hurricane harvey by kind of hailing a cab. >> here, remember this face? how can you forget it? the hawk became an internet sensation after the cab driver saw this injured bird hop into the front seat of his ride, right on the streets of houston. while hurricane harvey was raging, the hawk spent the past two weeks in a wildlife center. there she earned the nickname, appropriately, harvey the hurricane hawk. and look! her rehab paid off. >> one, two, three. >> there she goes. her helpers released harvey back into the wild yesterday. they say there's little chance she would have survived the storm if she had not hopped in that cab. >> boy, that's symbolic, isn't it? signs of recovery. >> it is, yes. >> and we just saw him sitting there in the back of the cab, you could tell he was injured. >> and probably pretty scared. >> glad he's doing well. daily struggles that many families face, how to care for

right now at 4:00, a difficult debate over the right to die. nbc 10 first told you last night at 11:00 about the bucks county pharmacist who police say admitted to giving her mother drugs to try to kill her and end her suffering. and that story brought to light the battle many local families are dealing with. how to care for an aging loved one. >> nbc 10's aaron baskerville is joining us live from springfield township, delaware county, with more on this daily struggle that so many face families are faci. >> reporter: we came out here to talk to dr. barry jacobs, who walks right over here at the center for family health in springfield and writes a daily column for the aarp.

he's also written two books on this area. he tells me millions and millions of americans are dealing with a similar issue. >> i can tell you that my client was faced with a situation where her mother was begging her to end the pain and the suffering and sometimes your emotions overcome your better judgment. >> reporter: the words of donna whoger's attorney resonate with many going through a similar struggle. the bucks county pharmacist was arrested for trying to end her mother's misery by injecting her with insulin, dropping her blood sugar so low, she would not wake up. >> there are caregivers and programs that provide people with home health aids, money for adult day care programs, support groups that make care giving a whole lot easier. >> reporter: in philadelphia alone, according to the mayor's commission on aging, there are more than 379,000 residents over 55. 30% over 75. a breakdown shows 31% have

trouble with independent living and self-care. dr. berry jacobs has written two books on the struggles of care giving and works out of the center for family health in springfield. he tells us 40 million americans will give some sort of care to a loved one this year. >> this is a bigger issue, it's becoming a political issue. many advocacy groups like aarp are pushing state and federal laws to help family caregivers and politicians are listening. >> reporter: we're told it all starts with initially calling out for help, but too many carry the burden alone. as for horger, she's out on bond awaiting her next hearing. >> what do you want people to know about your client? >> that she loves her mother dearly. >> reporter: as for her mother, she is 74 years old and suffering from dementia and osteoporosis. we're told she remains in the hospital for tonight. we're live in springfield, aaron baskerville, nbc 10 news. turning now to our first

in just a second. we have one or two showers, small showers. one near east town, one just south of norristown, very small. and then head to the shore, sea isle city has a light shower, wildwood has one that's going into avalon, just a few sprinkles. it's just not that much on the radar here. and as we take a wider look, you can see, there is more in western peninsula, a little farther to the south. and so we may see a few of those showers develop during the evening hours. so, you can't rule out a shower, but, again, most of us are not going to see it tonight, or tomorrow. let you know when showers are most likely and have the latest on that persistent hurricane, jose, out in the atlantic, coming in a few minutes. >> here's a look at some of the other stories we are following, county by county at 4:00. in camden county, a big boost for students in the camden

montgomery, and bucks counties. sinking spring at 78. reading, 78. allentown, 79, and white hall is 80. 78 in bethlehem. nazareth, and easton at 78 degrees, as well. that's pretty mild, especially compared to what we saw yesterday, when we were mostly in the 60s. very little in the way of showers. that's one of the reasons the temperature has been able to go up. one little shower over conshohocken, but that is north of manayunk, so they're not going to get the shower down the shore. looks like it's kind of fizzled. avalon, show you that beach shot. still fairly cloudy there, but nothing more than a sprinkle. more showers in northern peninsula, most of those staying away, as we head through the night and you can see them, mostly going into north jersey. we had some isolated showers and things die down tonight. tomorrow, we get more sunshine and again, just some isolated showers. not much at all. and then on saturday, things

pick up, for a day. start off with a fair amount of clouds, and then we get more developing during the afternoon. there's jose. well, there's florida, bahamas, jose, tropical storm right now. 70-mile-an-hour winds, new advisory will be coming out very soon, maybe moving more toward the northwest and picking up speed. and this is the last forecast from the hurricane center. a category 1, starting to move to the north and as we get into tuesday, now we're talking about the cone getting fairly close to the east coast. and so if it's on the left side of the cone, it would have a direct impact on our area for tuesday and perhaps into wednesday. if it's more toward the right side of the cone, then we're in pretty good shape and we wouldn't even see any rain from jose. so that's the important feature that we're beginning to be following. all right. we have some breaking news from
