still nine weeks to go in the hurricane season. >> and let us bring you up to date at the moment. two hurricane threats going on. we've got maria charging into the eastern caribbean after tearing across dominica overnight as a dangerous category 5. the island's prime minister who had to be rescued from his own damaged home saying the nation has suffered widespread devastation. >> the monster storm now bearing down on the u.s. virgin islands and puerto rico, and president trump has already declared states of emergency for both territories. >> all right. and there's also jose looming off the east coast. it's already producing high surf, dangerous rip currents, and it's going to bring soaking rain and gusty winds to the mid-atlantic and new england. our team is standing by and has it all covered. we'll start with al who is tracking both of those storms. al, good morning. >> good morning, guys. you can see this is what we've got right now. you've got jose right off the u.s. coast, and you've got hurricane maria that is threatening currently the caribbean and will continue to. let's see what we've got right

now. as far as jose coastal areas, up for minor coastal flooding, tides two feet above notion, beach erosion from fire island and provincetown just south of boston. it will will track away but then kind of do a lop and hang out in the atlantic right through sunday. may have an effect on maria. we're going to have to watch and see what happens with that. now, as far as maria is concerned, here's the latest on it. we are currently watching this as a category 5 storm, 65 miles west southwest of guadalupe. winds 160 miles per hour moving north at 9 miles per hour, and you can see we have hurricane warnings up for theward island, puerto rico. hurricane watches up for pipsia and tropical storm warnings as well. now, here's what we're expecting to happen as far as maria is concerned. the right now a category 5 storm makes its way towards the virgin islands. tonight, 125 to 150-mile-per-hour winds. 7:00 to 11-foot waves and so to

15 inches of rain or more. then, puerto rico as a category 4 storm. 125 to 150-mile-per-hour winds. storm surge of 6 to 9 feet, and look at this. there could be upwards of two feet or more of rain, and that's going to be catastrophic because within puerto rico you've got those mountains, and the heaviest rain will fall over those winward mountains, 20 to 25 minutes and it gets lift and brings out all the moisture there. this is a source of region for major rivers. all that rainfall falling down, sending all of that heavy rain, fudge into the headwaters and all the way down into coastal cities like san juan where the flooding could be catastrophic, so we'll be watching that as well. now, as we continue on the path, it goes past hispaniola, heads towards the turks and caicos on friday. 125-mile-per-hour winds and 5 to 8-foot surge and 12 to 18 inches of rain and continues on into the bahamas, and then, guys, it

kind of hangs out. we're not -- i don't even want to speculate where it's going to go after that because, as i said, we've got jose out there. there's a lot going on that could affect it. but puerto rico right now and the virgin islands in the crosshairs of this dangerous, dangerous storm. >> and they just went through everything with irma. >> exactly. thanks, al. we've talked to you a lot this morning. let talk now more about jose's threat to the eastern seaboard. nbc's kristen dahlgren is on the new jersey shore. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, guys. well, don't let jose fool you just because it doesn't look like it's going to be a direct landfall. there are still millions going to be feeling the effects of this storm today, and we're not just talking about the rain and this wind that we see picking up. we're talking about this, that dangerous roiling ocean that's going to be eroding these beaches that in many cases have just been rebuilt from sandy. this morning high surf warnings are in effect from the carolinas to new england. >> i think it looks like it's starting to show its teeth.

>> reporter: hurricane jose spinning offshore in the atlantic but bringing dangerous conditions to the east coast. winds could gust over 40 miles per hour, and powerful waves could wash over some beach communities. >> if we haven't learned anything else i would hope from this this season is that you need to be prepared. >> reporter: along the jersey shore, beaches and shops calling it an early season as residents get ready. on long island new construction was prepped for a possible storm surge and in nantucket extra lines used to secure boats. >> a big storm is coming, and we're in the crosshairs. >> reporter: while some aren't nervous about jose. >> i really don't see too much coming from this. >> reporter: for those forced to rebuild after super storm sandy five years ago, they can't help but keep a wary eye on any storms in the atlantic. >> if this gets knocked down, like it did during sandy, just sad. >> reporter: and it's expected to get worse as we go through

today. we're talking about beach erosion, the dangerous dangerous rip currents and here we're already, guys, sees these waves topsham roadways. >> kristen, thanks very much. >> now back to the destructive force of hurricane maria already on full display. as we said, it devastated the island of dominica overnight, is 60-mile-per-hour wind an torrential rain, and now puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands are in the path of this powerful punch. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in san juan for us. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. 24 hours ago we were talking about maria being a category 1 storm. it's now a category 5, and a hurricane warning is in effect for this entire island. president trump organized an emergency disaster declaration and approving federal assistance to the area as this monster hurricane takes aim. this morning hurricane maria is cutting a destructive path through the caribbean, punishing the remote islands of dominica,

barbados and st. lucia. overnight is 60-mile-per-hour winds and torrential rain tore through dominica. the country's prime minister, who had his own roof blown off, writing on facebook we have lost all what money can buy and replace. on the virgin islands of st. thomas and st. john, already badly battered by irma, traumatized residents are now desperately trying to escape this new threat. >> the island is devastated. no light, no water. no food. >> reporter: even the coast guard and other rescue teams are packing up and moving to safer locations. >> this one looks like it's going to hit us hard. >> reporter: puerto rico was barely grazed by irma, but maria is a much bigger threat to the u.s. territory. >> the devastation it will cause might be unprecedented. >> reporter: the island's 3 million american citizens now under a state of emergency, the government already rationing basic provisions like water and baby formula. >> how important is it for you to get supplies today? >> extremely. i mean, there's no water

anywhere. i can't find water. i can't find ice. it's pretty intense. >> reporter: and there's frantic scramble for guess. >> it's busy. >> reporter: it's busy. >> people are crazy. >> irma knocked out electricity to 75% of the island. more than 60,000 customers still in the dark as maria approaches, and some of the 3,500 irma evacuees from other caribbean islands are still in shelters here. gabriel wilson from st. thomas is scrambling to find one of the -- how worried are you about the storm? >> i don't know. at first they were saying it's a category 1 and now a category 2 and now it's going to be a 3 or 4. i don't know what's going to happen. >> reporter: the last category 4 or 5 storm to slam into puerto rico was back in 1932 when the island's population has since doubled. today the government is the preparing hundreds of shelters to hold potentially more than 100,000 evacuees. matt and savannah. >> all right. gabe gutierrez, scary times there. >> no question about it.

some other major stories we're covering, for example, the eyes of the world on president trump as he gets set to deliver a high stakes speech to the united nations general assembly. he made his debut there monday voicing his complaints about the world body to its leaders. so what will he say this morning? nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the u.n. for us. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hey, matt and savannah, good morning to you. today is the day the america first president getting ready to address the world. a senior administration official says president trump will deliver a clear-eyed view of the challenges around the globe in places like iran, north korea and venezuela that will focus on how the burden needs to be shared among countries, not just relying on the u.s. to address common goals. it's a very different world view than his predecessors, one the president's aides say will focus on outcomes, not ideologies. ahead of president trump's first address to the united nations, the general assembly bracing for the kind of seismic shift america has seen at home from

its new commander in chief. >> i think the main message is make the united nations great again, make the united nations great. >> reporter: the most urgent threat, a nuclear north korea. a top aide saying the president will talk tough today about the north korean menace. >> as far as north korea is concerned, i think most of you know how i feel. >> reporter: president trump, who derided the u.n. in the past, even once mocking the quote cheap marble tiles behind the speaker, now heavily dependant on its security council to implement punishing sanctions against kim jong-un's regime. mr. trump announced a trip to neighboring china this november after a call with president xi where the two leaders committed to maximizing pressure on north korea. defense secretary james mattis hinting the u.s. has military options that would not jeopardize seoul, south korea in the event of a counterattack but offering few specifics. >> there are, but i will not go into details. >> reporter: president trump

with the israeli prime minister also zeroing in on iran but refusing to reveal whether the u.s. is preparing to leave the nuclear deal negotiated by the obama administration. >> you'll be seeing very soon. >> reporter: that in the wake of this warning from iran's leader on cnn. exiting such an agreement, mr. rouhani says, would carry high cost for the u.s. president trump, the real estate mogul, pressing the u.n. to demand a better return on the u.s. investment, noting his high rise nearby. >> i actually saw great potential right across the street, to be honest for you, and it was only for the reason that the united nations was here that that turned out to be such a successful project. >> reporter: alongside france's president, mr. trump proposing a possible armed forces parade through washington on the fourth of july. still marveling about the bastille day celebration this summer where he served as guest of honor. >> it was one of the greatest parade i've ever seen so we're actually thinking about fourth of july, pennsylvania avenue, having a really great parade to

show our military strength. >> reporter: and to give you a little preview of what to watch for inside the general assembly hall during the president's speech today, all those reaction shots of the world leaders, many of whom will be seeing mr. trump in person for the first time, and the seating arrangements are determined by lottery. coincidentally this year the north korean delegation, without kim jong-un, he won't be here, got seats right in the front and center. matt and savannah, they will be a matter of a feet away from president trump. >> that should be interesting to watch, peter. thank you very much, and i should mention to our viewers that we'll have coverage, live coverage of the president's speech on many of these stations a little later this morning. new details are emerging in the federal investigation now into possible collusion between the trump presidential campaign and russia. the "new york times" reporting this morning that prosecutors have informed former trump campaign chairman paul manafort that they plan to indict him. federal agents raided manafort's

virginia home in july with a warrant after picking the lock on his front door. they took binders stuffed with document, copied his computer files, according to paper and took pictures of his expensive suits. and cnn is reporting this morning that u.s. investigators wiretapped manafort under secret court orders before and after the 2016 election. manafort was forced to resign as trump's campaign manager in august of 2016 amid scrutiny over his relationships with pro-russian figures. meantime, president trump's eldest son donald trump jr. has decided to give up his secret service protection. trump jr., who lives here in new york city, is said to be seeking more privacy. the agency stopped protecting him last week. it's not clear if his wife and five children will still be protected by agents. additionally, white house counsellor kellyanne conway has also decided to end her secret service protection. the moves will provide at least some relief to a secret service that is strained by the size of the president's family.

>> other news now, including a protest at georgia tech that turned violent last night following a vigil for a student killed by campus police over the weekend. the university sent out an emergency alert and urged students to seek shelter in a secure location. a police vehicle was set on fire. two officers suffered minor injuries during the protests. three people were arrested. on saturday night, campus police shot and killed scout schultz who they say was armed with a knife at the time. police say schultz was walking towards them and ignoring their commands. several suicide notes were found in schultz' dorm room. breaking overnight, an earthquake shook part of southern california. the magnitude 3.6 quake was centered about four miles to the northwest of the ucla campus in westwood. it hit at 11:20 local time. there were no reports of injuries or any real damage but the quake rattled nerves across that region and quickly became the top trending item on social media. >> talk about rattled nerves. i mean, everybody in the

caribbean right now, we just feel for them. this storm that is going over the same path irma did. >> absolutely is, and as we take a look at what's going on as far as our weather, at least in the 48 contiguous state and alaska and hawaii, showers in hawaii today. we're also looking at heavy rain in the pacific northwest. hot and humid from texas all the way up into the central plains. the coastal rain and wind developing off of jose, and we're looking at more sunshine through the southeast. we're going to get to your local ♪ hey grandpa. hey, kid. really good to see you. you too. you tell grandma you were going fishing again? maybe. 7:39 on a tuesday morning. it's been six months since our next guest, bill o'reilly, was forced out of his top-rated fox news show "the o'riley factor" over allegations of sexual harassment. today also marks the release of bill owes new book written about martin dugard, "killing england." bill, good morning. >> thanks for having me in. >> let me start with what's transpired over the last six months, the first time we're hearing from you. what was the exact reap you were given or your representatives were given by people at fox news for your firing? >> there was no reason. they had a contractual clause that they could pay me a certain amount of money and not put me on the air, and they exercised that. >> why did they exercise that? what was the reason? >> this was a sponsorship boycott engineered by media matters, the radical left group, and the sponsor boycott unsettled some people at fox news. >> you were accused of sexual

harassment. >> mm-hmm. >> you said at the time you did absolutely nothing wrong. >> correct. >> do you stand by in a? >> i do. >> and so did you provide fox news any evidence, any information that you think could have changed their mind as to what you were guilty or not guilty of? >> my legal team was very aggressive in putting forth our point of view, and that's all i'm going to say about it. >> i want to put this in perspective timing-wise. were you fired about ten months after roger ailes was let go by the network over allegations of sexual harassment. so the network understood the subject matter. you were probably the last guy in the world that they wanted to fire because you were the guy that the ratings and the revenues were built on. you carried that network on your shoulders for a lot of years. so doesn't it seem safe to assume that the people at fox news were given a piece of information or given some evidence that simply made it impossible for you to stay on at fox news? >> that's a false assumption. there are a lot of other

business things in play at that time and still today that 21st century was involved with, and it was a business decision that they made, but there isn't any smoking gun. >> but you don't let your number one guy. >> sure you do. >> unless you have information -- >> that's not true. billions of dollars at stake in business deals, and they made a business decision that they could, you know, possibly prosper more without me. it was as simple as that. it was a business decision. >> did you ever send a lewd text or e-mail to another employee at fox news? >> no. >> did you ever have any human resources cases brought against you? >> not in 42 years. wait, wait. in 42 years, all right, i've been in this bills. i've worked for 12 companies. not one time did i have any interaction with hr or any complaints filed against me. >> the "new york times" reported up to five women had come

forward over the years and complained about sexual harassment at your hands and that fox news actually made deals with those women, financial settlements, amounting to about $13 million for their silence. is that accurate? >> i don't know, because i'm not privy to what knocks news did. after roger ailes went down, there was a flood of lawsuits, a flood, with dozens of people named, and the company did what the company did. >> but you've read the reports. >> wait, wait. every company in this country, including this one, comcast, has these lawsuits. every one. now some of them are valid and some of them are not. they settle them for a number of reasons. now, as an employee, i don't real very any say in that matter. >> but were you aware of those five women? >> i was aware, sure. >> so why didn't you sue those women? >> because you can't win those lawsuits. if you're a public figure, you cannot win them.

sarah palin is the latest example, and -- and i could do that, but the collateral damage of these lawsuits, the press frenzy, every allegation is a conviction. every allegation in this area is a conviction. they don't look for the truth. >> but think about those five women and what they did. they came forward and filed complaints against the biggest star at the network they worked at. think of how intimidating that must have been, how nerve-racking that must have been. doesn't that tell you how strongly they felt about the way they were treated by you? >> well, it's not just me. those lawsuits involved many other people, not just me. so i don't know -- i'm not going to speculate about intent or why people did what they did, but you don't have the story, lauer, correct. the lawsuits involved many people, many people. >> but you were also named. >> i was named in a few of them. a few of them. >> let me put a period on it

this way, bill, by asking you this over the last six months since your firing, have you done some soul searching? have you done some self-reflection and have you looked at the way you treated women that you think now or think about differently now than you did at the time? >> my conscience is clear. what i have done is organized a legal team to get the truth to the american people so if you go to newsmax.com or billo'riley.com you'll see an article about one of the accusers of me, okay, who was arrested for filing a false police report. will you see that article. and i want people to read it and make up their own mind. >> and that happened back in 2015, and i just want to mention that two things can be mutually exclusive. she could have filed a false report -- >> but you don't know, lauer. you don't know. >> she could have filed a false report in 20 is a and still be telling the truth about you. >> look, anything is possible, all right, but it goes to

credibility, doesn't it? all right. if you look at -- in totality, this was a hit job, a political and financial hit job. >> is this a vast left wing conspiracy? >> not vast and don't be sarcastic. >> i was the one that hillary clinton said that to 20 years ago. >> all right. we'll be able to prove what we say. there are more things to come, all right. this was media matters, the bonner group, color of change, organizing sponsor boycotts to bring down fox news and me. >> were there any self-inflicted wounds here, bill? >> you know, nobody is a perfect person, but i can go to sleep at night very well knowing that i never mistreated anyone on my watch in 42 years. >> we spoke earlier and i said i would ask you these questions and i would also ask you about your book and i'm going to uphold my end of the barringan. >> yes. >> about the american revolution and the heros and villains on that fight for freedom, you think it's particularly relevant now. why? >> you have in dallas the public school system now debating whether to change the names of schools of washington, jefferson, madison and benjamin franklin. this is madness, and folks need to know about these icons, who they were in order to stop this craziness. "killing england" is seep through the eyes of george washington, thomas jefferson and benjamin franklin, all right. what they went through. who they, and it's unvarnish the. it's slaves, it's everything. people need to know who they were to stop this crazy stuff! >> when you talk about this crazy stuff, do you think we're living through under a re-examination of history now, or is history under assault in your opinion? >> it's under assault. it's absolutely the far left and pc forces want to wipe out our

sunday it's out into the atlantic. here's what we're expecting for it along the eastern seaboard. first of all, the wind, stretching from ocean city all the way up to boston, anywhere from 30 to 40-mile-per-hour winds. the surf is going to be a big problem as well. we'll be looking at a lot of heavy seas, anywhere from 10 to is a feet and rainfall amounts will generally be about 3 to 6 inches along the coast. now, to maria. this one a dangerous storm, a category 5. 85 west of guadalupe and 160-mile-per-hour winds. it's moving to the north at 9. here's what we're seeing as far as impacts as we go forward. a category 5 storm makes the virgin islands tonight up to 150-mile-per-hour winds, a 7 to 11-foot storm surge. puerto rico, you are -- it's going to get slammed. there's no question about it. up to 150-mile-per-hour winds, a 6 to 9-foot storm surge. upwards of 25 inches of rain, and then continues towards the turks and caicos on friday with, again, 125-mile-per-hour-plus

wind and storm surges of 5 to 8 feet. the devastation from maria could be really unimaginable as we go forward because they have all -- all these islands have been so vulnerable and weakened because of irma. >> sure. >> so many people in those islands don't have power from the first time and now they are dealing with this. al, thank you very much. at the united nations today, president trump trying to ramp up global pressure on north korea with his first address to the general assembly. nbc's kristen welker is there for us. kristen, what are we expecting? >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. the stakes couldn't be higher as president trump prepares to address the united nations in just a few hours from now. leaders and dignitaries from 193 nations preparing to hear from a leader who has at times been unpredictable and who hasn't shied away from clashing with some of his foreign counterparts. a senior administration official says president trump will project his america first platform while calling on all nations to do their part in confronting rogue regimes around the world. the most urgent threat is north

korea. the president expected to paint an increasingly dire picture of a, quote, menacing country, and with a crucial deadline approaching for the iran nuclear deal, the president will likely have harsh words for that country, too. on monday mr. trump said we'll see when asked about pulling out of the iran deal which was negotiated by the obama administration. the president was sharply critical of the u.n. as a candidate and is now calling for change, including less bureaucratic red tape. meanwhile, the president tweeting about his speech this morning saying big day at the united nations. many good things and some tricky ones happening. we have a great team. now, something to watch for inside the room. the north korean delegation will be front and center, but that's just a coincidence, the seating assignments are done by lottery. matt. >> a lot of people will be looking at the expression on their faces. kristen, you'll be there all day long and i want our viewers to know we'll have live coverage of the president's speech this morning on many of these

>> most of the time when we talk about sleep it's all about the quantity, but what about the quality? it's really rare that i fall asleep and stay asleep until my alarm goes off. >> and apparently i'm not alone. a new report reveals more than a quarter of middle-aged women in the u.s. experience difficulty falling and staying asleep four or more times a week. and it may come as no surprise. sleep deprivation is more common for moms so to find out how interrupted sleep might be affecting me, dr. carol ashe, a speech expert, designed an overnight experiment. >> there's some simple screens that we'll go through that will give us essentially your sleep iq. >> so, let's see. problems waking up too early. >> yeah, that does happen sometimes. >> dr. ashe outfitted me with a sleep tracker with a warning that the night ahead would not be restful. >> so with cameras rolling, i got into bed at my normal bed time, 4:30 p.m. >> i have a few tricks. i have been known to count

sheep, read something kind of boring, but not too boring. first, i had to fall asleep, but could i stay asleep? apparently not. i kept hearing the buzzing of a phone. that really threw me so i really had to try to reset and fall asleep again. it isn't always easy to reset after the all too familiar sound of a crying baby. i checked my phone once, and i saw a message but i tried not to think about it. it took a while but finally i fall back asleep. but then i'm interrupted once again. i just tried to ignore it, put the pillow over my head and roll

over. i did not have a very good night sleep at all. i heard little noises and then as often happens i woke up before my alarm. >> hi. >> hi, savannah. so how did it go? >> i guess you're a morning person. >> we tried to reduplicate a typical night for people that wake up with this type of a problem. >> i feel tired, but it's no worse than usual. >> you poor thing. >> never felt more sexy than in that moment. dr. carol ashe is here, and she's got the results. she's an experts at rutgers rjw barnabus health. good morning. what had a lovely night we had together. >> that was in a hotel. not my baby we were ignoring in the experiment. what were the results? you have the fitbit, the vitals. tell me. we did four simple questionnaires. the most telltale was the one called the insomnia severity index, 14 out of 28, right in

the middle so you're doing some things okay. you could be doing some things better. well checked your vitals, your pulse and your blood pressure. they were okay, and we did, we used the fitbit. that tracks average sleep-wake patterns and you had 20 episodes of restlessness. is that a lot in. >> average fitbit useers is 1 to 30 but the episodes of restlessness, the interruptions can be a problem. if you get eight hours of sleep which is what we gave you as the opportunity, that's the same if you have interruptions as if you only had four hours of sleep. >> oh, my word. >> that's why i feel terrible. >> so short-term ramifications of interrupted sleep versus long term. >> well, there are definitely, matt. short-term implications this. your focus will be off so short-term focus, your attention span is bad of the you'll have difficulty with critical thinking. >> check. >> moodiness. don't say anything, and mood problems, yes, and there's long-term consequences, too.

you can have problems, cardiac problems, problems with your heart and weight gain, and there's new research that shows cognitive difficulties put you at risk for alzheimer's and dementia. >> savannah slept with a pillow on her head. one thing to do to try to block things out. anything you can do to try to minimize the interrupted sleep? >> one of the things she did go. has has go-to sleep routine, that's really good and when we had the baby crying. she didn't get out of bed. she let the baby self-soothe. >> that was a fake baby. real baby might be different. >> you couldn't fix the temperature of the room. you were hot, you told us. >> yeah. >> and those are all things we can deal with. >> the go-to sleep important and hers, ernest and julio gallo, want to thank them for helping her with that. >> that's on the don't do list. >> all right. let's head over to dylan with some gadgets a lot of people are itching for. dylan? >> hey, guys. we've got our text expert here,

ten minutes we just experienced at the scene. for serial hours the family had been looking for this 4-year-old girl. i just talked with the grandfather who confirmed the girl is 4 years old. let me step out of the way. this i guess where it happened. this unit here on 2400 block of ba bartrum drive. the grandfather told me she wandered outside looking for her mother who had gone to the store. the neighbor next door saw the girl and took her inside. in the past 10 minutes the neighbor yelled outside, walked over to police and said, i have the girl right here. this was quite a scene. the girl was right next door the whole time. we talked with some family members. we'll have all those details and video of the reunion coming up when we see you at 11:00. i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. thank you very much. we've issued first alert because of hurricane jose. >> vai, it's offshore but look at the waves in cape may.
