>> trouble in the tropics. hurricane maria is now a category 5. it is passing well offshore but having an impagt on our area. rip currents are strong at the jersey shore and delaware beaches. this is a live look. you can see the rougher waves are rolling in there. crews will be monitoring beaches like this one for erosion. ted says the newly constructed beaches are already showing signs of erosion. he sent us this video of water up to the bottom of the dunes there. we'll have a live report from

ted coming up in just a few minutes. erosion is also a problem along the northern jersey shore. the erosion is digging quite a path there along the beach. the fishing pier is damaged because of jose. strong surf has been pounding. the far ends of the peer with were collapsed. they were rebuilt after hurricane sandy. this is a live look over center city. islands in the caribbean are bracing for hurricane maria. people are scrambling for gas as they wait for maria, more than 60,000 customers are still without power following hurricane irma. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking hurricane maria and the

effects of jose and what he'll have on our area. a lot to talk about. >> yeah. we certainly do. let's start with the immediate threat. this is due to jose. you can see some of the outer bands. they are moving northeast to southwest. you can see they are coming right down from long island and not making a lot of progress to the west towards the philadelphia area. the center of the storm is pretty far out and it is 270 miles from atlantic city. so it's a fairly wide storm. it's covering a large area but it is not intensified and will be moving over colder waters. northeast winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour. it is a northeast wind. if it was a little more of an on shore wind it would be gustier. it wouldn't be blocked from some

of the effects of the storm. we are expecting moderate impacts today and tonight. the moderate coastal flooding i think will be the major impacts. periodic showers. you have already seen the rough seas out there that will continue. hour by hour we are seeing more of those showers moving in during the afternoon. the possibility that a couple reached the philadelphia area. this is mostly near the shore and just inland. as we go into tomorrow we are basically drying out and starting to see more sunshine. so we are just being grazed by this right now. jose has minimal hurricanes. this is the track it has taken and we'll show you the track it will take up to the knot east which is fine keeping it well

offshore and then doing a little loop and starting to move back. that's where things get especially interesting and could even interact with maria. we'll talk more about that coming up. >> hurricane jose is creating high waves and flooding at the jersey shore. ted is live and you have been checking the conditions at several shore points. >> reporter: yeah. more than three hours after this morning's high tide take a look at what's left here. you can see that the water is backed up onto the beach. a highly controversial beach projection project is underway. it has been plagued with drainage problems. we have video on the beach, ocean water up to the foot of

new dunes that are part of that man dad project. you could clearly see how the surf is beating away at some of the rebuilt beaches. also this morning, title flooding. we found that in flood prone sections. some drivers taking a chance and driving through flooded streets. the shore is under a coastal flood warning. as glenn was just telling us, more significant flooding could be a problem during this evening's high tide. it happens on the ocean front and one to two hours later on the back page. a little breezy out here. right now pretty dry except of course ton street where i'm standing. nbc 10 news. >> remember, you track the hurricanes with the app.

it also lets you customize where you or your lived ones lived. a four-year-old girl is safe after wandering out of her home in southwest philadelphia this morning. her mother could face charges. matt delucia was on the scene. he joins us live with how she was found, matt. >> reporter: this is where that four-year-old girl was reported missing early this morning. police searched this area. the entire neighborhood for most of the morning. in a moment of surprise and relief this happened. >> it is the moment when hours

of anguish turned to pure joy, when grandparents and grandchild reunite. >> a happy ending when family members of isabella find their little girl in a neighbor's arms. >> nothing happened to the child, nothing nobody did wrong. >> it was around 4:00 a.m. police say the girl's mother left her apartment to get ice. the little girl wandered outside and that's when a neighbor stepped in. >> the woman did the right thing, took her in, called 911

right away. at least she did the right thing. >> the child wandered out, which children do some time. the neighbor said come here. m mommy will be back and she will be back. >> searching woods and water police brought out a boat when she could be just about any where she was next door. >> you all right? >> innocently unaware of what her family had been there. >> i thank god that everything is fine. everything is positive. >> qui >> reporter: quite a morning. the mother is being questioned about leaving the four-year-old and seven-year-old in the apartment alone. the neighbor who took in the child said she saw the commotion and didn't think anything of it and she didn't have a phone to

call police to let them know she had the child. this girl was taken to the hospital for a quick evaluation. she is expected to be just fine and happily reunited with her family. nbc 10 news. >> police just announced the arrest of a suspect in a series of child luring. police think there could be more victims. they say he drove up to school children and asked them to get in his car. they all reported the incidents. a shooter killed a 15-year-old boy and injured two other teens. it happened yesterday afternoon. police say the boy was shot twice in the torso and died after being taken to the hospital. two survivors are in stable condition this morning. parents are hoping a new

offer from the teachers union will lead to a quick end to the strike. the union is expected to hand in a counter to proposal at some point today. we are waiting to hear what it contains and get reaction from school officials. the sticking point has really been health care costs with 5,000 kids out of school. parents have either had to take off of work or arrange for child care. >> there is an additional financial burden. we'll have to make sheez up at some point. >> any disruption is a big issue. we don't take that lightly. >> we are certainly hoping that this effort will move us off the dime so to speak and there will be dialogue between the parties. >> as saloon as we learn more we'll have it on the nbc 10 app. it's time now for a check on the roads with jessica boyington. >> we are watching route 309.

>> harsh words from president trump and his first address to the united nations. he warned of the growing threats from north korea and iran.

he called the ie raranian government. he also made a strong promise to north korea calling the country's leader the rocket man. >> the united states has great strength and patience but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies we will have no choice but to totally destroy north korea. rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime. the united states is ready, willing and able but hopefully this will not be necessary. >> the president promised he would also put the interest of the united states first while working to make the world a safer place. donald trump jr. and kellyanne conway both elected to drop the protection by the

secret service. donald trump jr. wants more priva privacy. the decision will ease the burden on the secret service which has been stretched thin with the president's large family. well, we are still tracking two hurricanes. they are not that far offshore. fortunately jose is moving to the northeast and weon't be getting any closer to us. it is still spinning mioisture around the north and west sides. we are seeing showers especially at the shore and just inland coming down into southern delaware not especially heavy. it is a different story up in cape cod. we sent storm ranger 10 out there. that's the place closest to the heaviest rain to get more detail

on where the heaviest rain is. you can see this headed right into the providence rhode island area. if a hurricane was ever really close to the jersey shore you put storm ranger near the store and be able to get details like that. here we go with the track. it is looking more to the northeast then it makes a bit of a turn, and that is the real question mark. towards the end of this period, how far does it come back? these darker colors are the warmer temperatures. if it starts to come back it's going from cold water to warm water again. it would have a chance to restrengthen. it would not happen until the weekend. our biggest problems, it will be coastal flooding. there was minor flooding this morning. moderate flooding coming this evening. 7:45 is the high tide.

8: 8:19 in cape may. the futurecast shows the core of the storm staying well offshore. it will be a bit breezy. gusty at the shore. so that wind is not the big issue here. we are not expecting wind damage in our area. things are drying out. t going to be spinning out there for days. so there is jose. there is maria. maria went right over this island of dominica last night. sit due northwest in the general direction of the virgin islands

and puerto rico. this is a horrible thing. you can see the eye very clearly. it is a small eye and smaller storm than irma was. still a category 5. it would be tomorrow morning. 155 miles per hour max winds. it takes it generally east of the bahamas. then what happens to it? it goes out into the atlantic. one of the of jose coming down and this coming up they could interact with each other. these are the computer models in pretty gd agreement here taking it east of the bahamas and in the general northerly direction.

back to the two storms creating trouble in the tropics. on the top hurricane jose is stirring the waters on our coast. ton bottom there hurricane maria made land fall overnight. it is now headed towards the virgin islands in puerto rico. this shows strong winds and heavy rain as it store through the island overnight.

you can see those trees nearly bending in half. we are getting our first look at the damage caused by maria you can see it knock down tree branches and cause flooding on streets. hurricane maria is on track to hit puerto rico. it could bring a force and violence they haven't seen for several generations. gabe has the latest now from san juan. >> this morning hurricane maria is cutting a destructive path punishing the remote islands. on the virgin islands of st. thomas and st. john already badly battered they are desperate pli trying to escape this new threat. >> no lights, no water, no food. >> even the coast guard and other rescue teams are packing up and moving to safer

locations. puerto rico was pairly grazed by irma but maria is a bigger threat for the u.s. territory. >> the devastation it will cost might be unprecedented. >> the island's 3 million citizens under a state of emergency. the government rationing things. >> i can't find water. i can't find ice. it's pretty intense. >> a frantic scramble for gas. >> it is busy. >> irma knocked out electricity to more than 60,000 customers still in the dark as maria approaches. some of the 3,500 evacuees are still in shelter here. hundreds could potentially hold more than 100,000 evacuees. you're looking at how hurricane jose is impacting the

jersey shore. jersey shore bureau reporter sent us this video of title flooding along the streets. let's take a live look at avalon. we have seen the waves getting rougher. rip currents are strong. you're being advised not to get in the water today. jose helping to make it a cloudy day around philadelphia. this is a live look at the ben franklin parkway. doesn't look too bad from that ankle. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking jose's impact on our area. >> don't like seeing those pictures of the flooding in the waves at the shore because tonight's high tide will be considerably higher than the one this morning that you just saw the results of. we have some showers coming into

long beach island from time to time. you get a little extra wind gust as that happens. the storm is still way offshore, not moving in our direction. the center of it is 270 miles off of atlantic city. when the eye of a storm passes that far to the east you're getting minimal effects in the form of winds. not expecting any kinds of damage there. it's day after day after day of the waves coming from jose. it has been out in the atlantic somewhere. it is gusting to about 22 miles per hour in philadelphia. yeah, it's a breezy day. the first alert is for the shore. that's where things are more serious. through thursday morning it is going to take a while for that ocean to calm down. the high surf, the rip currents, you saw flooding already but we are talking about moderate coastal flooding this evening and we have already seen beach erosion.

there is going to be more of that coming in the next couple of days. the track takes it to the northeast and then to the east eventually but it also could potentially turn back a little closer to the east coast as we head towards the weekend. that's when things get interesting. it could potentially interaction with more ree arimaria. we have the latest. >> this morning high surf warnings in effect from the carolinas to new england. it. >> is starting to show its teeth. >> hurricane jose spinning offshore but bringing dangerous conditions to the east coast. winds could gust over 40 miles per hour and powerful waves could wash over beach

communities. >> we haven't learned anything else i would hope is that you need to be prepared. >> along the jersey shore, beaches and shops calling it an early season. residents get ready. on long island it was prepped far possible storm surge and extra lines used to secure boats. >> a big storm is coming. >> while some aren't nervous about jose. >> i don't see too much come up from this. >> from those forced to rebuild after super storm sandy they can't help but keep an eye on any storms in the atlantic. >> if it gets knocked down like it did during sandy it's sad. >> don't be fool bid jose not expected to make a direct land fall. this is still a very dangerous storm going to be effecting millions of people. we are talking beach erosion and we are all right seeing street

flooding. send you neighborhood alerts as soon as they are issued. >> we should -- the north will update the immediate what this afternoon. it is about williams. the student died september 11th after a -- we will bring it to you on the nbc 10 a. police say they have found the body of a woman who walked away from a nursing home last month. she was found about 2 miles away. the woman had alzheimer's disease and her death does not appear to be suspicious. police are looking for this silver suv. investigators say a man and woman in that suv tried to lure two girls.

the girls were on park lane when the suv pulled up. they refused to get in and called police. violent protests in atlanta sent hundreds into the streets. protesters set georgia tech police cars on fire and attacked campus officers. protesters are angry over the death of a student killed by campus police over the weekend. [ crowd chanting ] >> and in st. louis protesters chanted outside the city jail overnight. they want fellow protesters arrested on sunday set free. it all started friday when a white police officer was acquitted in the 2011 shooting death of a black man. people in southern california were awoken by an overnight earthquake. our sister station was on the air when the quake hit. >> did you feel that? >> yeah.

did you feel it? >> just had a little earthquake. >> they said it was a quick but sizable jolt. there are no reports of injuries or major damage from the earthqua earthquake. check this out. fire crews took a car apart in order to save a tiny kitten. the owner tried to get the kitten out far couple of days with no success. he called in the fire department. they used air bags to lift the car and took it apart. the kitten nicknamed lexus is being adopted by the driver's neighbor. the latest victim of the changing shopping trend, the filing for chapter 11 filing came late yesterday. it is approximately 1,600 store around the world. toys 'r' us says it plans to make changes in an increasingly online shopping marketplace.

happening today housing in urban development secretary will visit philadelphia. he will attend the ribbon cutting as part of a national listening tour. a partnership helped revamp the school in kensington. it is a unique place. the 500 students learned through project based classes. the eagles are now looking ahead to their home opener on sunday. this is a live look inside from our eagles nest camera. the birds split their first two on the road. septa will give you a ride to the eagles home opener. there is no charge to ride to and from the game this sunday from 9:00 to 9:00. it includes all fairs or transfers. septa will run several express

september is childhood cancer awareness month. this sunday thousands will gather on the ben franklin parkway to raise money for pediatrics cancer research. they are raising money for pediatrics cancer research. cancer is the leading cause of death in disease in children under the age of 15. talk about where the money

raised from sunday is going to go. how are we going to help? >> we really rely on the funds from the parkway to support our state of the art world class cancer research and patient care efforts. as funding sources have dried up a little bit. the parkway rund raises over a million dollars. >> let's turn to you. cancer really taking a toll. you are a cancer survivor. talk about how you're doing. >> i was talking to him a couple of days ago about five months in remission. my mom was diagnosed with cancer when i was about ten and passed away a couple of weeks before

that. >> how are you doing now? >> i'm doing good. >> this is your third year. you made a video to help raise money. tell us about your experience. why is it so important you're getting involved and helping to raise money and awareness? >> i'm doing really good right now. it is really important because i feel as if we help raise money they might be able to find a cure and if they find a cure me and others can live normal lives. >> how much money do you want to raise? >> this year we want to raise

10,000. our team has already raised over 10,000. >> wow. that's huge. thank you to all of you with us today. sunday will be a great day. the 2017 parkway walk and run happening this sunday. registration starts at 7:00 a.m. and opening ceremonies begin at 8:00 a.m. for more go to our web site. we have got it all there or check out the nbc 10 app. there is a hurricane less than 300 miles offshore. it has been out in the atlantic for more than a week. it has been spinning the waves right at us. the worst of the storm, you see this area? heavy thunderstorms and that's where the strong winds are, that is never going to reach us.

some of the outer bands are reaching us now. so far on the lighter side. so far not coming inland far enough from philadelphia. the area that is likely to get hit the hardest in the united states with jose is cape cod. we have sent storm ranger 10 out there to get a look at the more detailed portions of this storm. you can see some of these showers coming through nantucket and if there was a hurricane that was closer to the jersey shore we sent storm ranger there and got that kind of detail on the storm as well. now, as we take a look at the flood threat it's going to be moderate flooding. it was minor this morning. what you saw, those pictures, that was the result of the weaker of the two tides today. moderate flooding, so it will be

more serious this evening all through new jersey and in delaware. and then another minor flood event tomorrow morning. the core of this storm stays well offshore. we do get some occasional showers moving through. right now it does not look like they are especially heavy coming into our area that the storm is tracking more to the northeast and then the north and so keeping those heavy showers far away from us and then we start drying out tomorrow. now, here is where it gets weird, where the track is pretty clear cut towards the northeast for the next couple of days. there is thursday. you can see all of these positions. it would continue moving out to sea. look what happens. several models start bringing it back closer to the united states including some pretty reliable ones. even more of them as we head towards sunday.

that's a lot of initials out there. not that far off the east coast. here we are on tuesday. we are still talk about jose over the weekend. there is maria down in the eastern caribbean, the virgin islands and puerto rico. it went right over dominica. it is still a cat 5. it is the perfect round small eye and no signs of weakening at this point. 160 miles per hour cat 5 moving west northwest at 10 miles per hour. it is expected to hit the virgin islands in puerto rico by tomorrow morning as either a high cat 4 or a cat 5 at 160. it's not that much difference. then it tracks east of the bahamas and then after that it keeps moving north. remember, jose is potentially

sitting out there. these storms if they get close enough together they can start rotating around each other which would potentially force jose closer to the u.s. we'll have more in the afternoon. 2017 begins the centennial celebration of women first winning the right to vote. now a new back looks at the milestone and highlights coming impact on politics and government in the united states. it's called preb the ladies, celebrating those who fought for freedom. we have angela here with us today. thanks for having us. >> thanks for having me. >> it goes beyond the fight for womens right to vote all the way to revolutionary times. talk about that. >> it starts really with the condition of women in this country even before the evolution and of course the title comes from adams letter to

her husband as he was on his way to the second continental congress to remember the ladies if they drew up laws in that gathering, which they didn't really so much after doing the declaration of independence. the book goes through the formation of the earlier years of the womens right movement to the suffrage campaign leading up to 1920. >> you look at figures and african american movements. >> an african american woman who ever addressed mixed audiences in about 1831 or so. before that women were not encouraged or were discouraged from speaking in public at all except for quaker women who were allowed to reach. she is one of the first people mentioned in the book. i also talk about the anti

slavery groups here. they were interracial. a lot of black women participated with women and they worked together until well after the civil war. >> you also read about women who served in congress as governors. of course the 2016 presidential election, so are we taking steps in the right direction in your opinion? >> i think we are taking steps in the right direction in that she was nominated by a major party and the fact that other women are getting elected to congress. we have seen harris and maxine waters and people like that come to the front. that's very very important. now we have to make sure that people are really organized for 2020 so more women win offices. >> thanks for being here with us. >> thank you. >> and once again the book the called remember the ladies,
