dozens dead, others trapped, buildings toppled. >> hurricane fears. jose could cause new trouble for the shore. just minutes from now. >> deadly drinking, we learned what led up to the death of this local college lacrosse player and prosecutors will press charges. b. a deadly quake rumbled through mexico city. i'm jim rosenfield. >> and aim jacqueline london. let's get to erin coleman live in the breaking news center. you're tracking new developments. >> we continue to get new numbers and new video into the newsroom every minute. right now we know the earthquake left 61 people dead in mexico. but that number is expected to go up.

>> you can hear there alarms blaring. office workers running from buildings sent swaying by the quake in mexico city. many people are still in the streets right now afraid to return to buildings that may be damaged. the 7.1 quake was centered near the state town of roboso. that's 76 miles southeast of mexico city. there are reports of people trapped in buildings after the massive tremor there. you can see people gathered in the street as smoke and dust surround them. workers need to listen for people who may be trapped inside.

hurricane maria clobbering the caribbean. this is just getting started. they are threatening disaster. >> jose threatens part of our area tonight. a live look at conditions in avalon. you can see the wave action kicking up there tonight. >> and jose is already causing beach e erosion at the shore. this is the damage jose is already laid on ocean city and things could get even worse as the night wears on. >> the same threat to the beaches, time lapse video here shows ominous skies. >> and in philadelphia, jose is creating cloudy conditions and showers today. this is a live look at the wind turbines at lincoln financial field in south philly. the world's most powerful weather radar is tracking hurricane jose so you'll know exactly how the storm is impacting you and your family.

this is a live look at storm ranger positioned off cape cod in massachusetts as jose turns in the ocean. >> we're bringing you live coverage at this hour. ted greenberg is live in ocean city. >> let's begin with first alert meteorologi meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> we have this hurricane that's been on the map for over a week. it keeps spinning around and spinning all the waves toward us. and it has been a damp afternoon. tr philly toward the shore, but north and west, it's basically been dry. we got up to 80 degrees today. you can see the center of jose. it's still a tropical system. we have thunderstorms around the center. that's proof of that. the center is about 230 miles offshore. and it's not going to get any

than this. at least for many, many days. strange things after that. for tonight, moderate coastalç flooding expected. delaware and south jersey. beach erosion continuing. the gusts 30 to 40 and the rough seas continuing as well. so this is going to be a long lasting thing. we fwot the first alert out and jose is a minimal hurricane. it starts moving back over the weekend. i'll tell you how that could impact our weather coming up. >> hurricane jose caused minor flooding at the shore. here it is here. but the problems could get worse at high tide this evening. let's continue our coverage with ted greenberg live in ocean city for us. how is the beach looking?

that high tide is quickly approaching and not much of the beach to see because the ocean is m coming all the way up to the dunes. we are watching the ocean. it is very rough and dangerous. the pound iing waves fuelled by jose out in the atlantic continue to eat away at the sand dunes. beach erosion a problem all along the jersey shore. and as glen was saying, coastal flooding expected to be an issue as well this evening at high tide. we are looking at the possibility of moderate tidal flooding, more significant than the minor flooding we saw this morning. widespread roadway flooding is expected here at the shore. that high tide happens between 7:30 and 8:30 this evening here along the ocean front. that one to two hours later on the back bays. i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. hurricane maria is expected to hit puerto rico tomorrow after devastating the caribbean ie left-hand side overnight. >> the storm could leave parts of puerto rico uninhabitable for months. it's devastating news for people

there recovering from hurricane irma even though it was not a direct hit. people are without power and water. the government is rationing baby formula and water as they prepare for hurricane maria. >> you can track the threats right now on the nbc 10 app. you can sign up for free weather aletters to know when a storm is about to impact your exact location. right now at 6:00, no hazing in the death of a local college lacrosse player. authorities reveal that lafayette's student died after hitting his head in a fall after he had been drinking. >> i do not see this as a state case. the facts are different. >> deanna durante has been following this for more than a week now. she's live in easton. investigators revealed today there does not appear to be any criminal conduct in the death. >> the district attorney says no one forced the college freshman to drink alcohol.

friends checked in on him and when they figured that something was wrong, they tried to get him to the hospital. a freshman lacrosse player had been drinking friday, september 8th, and saturday, september 9th, before he web went to an o campus party he start ed drinkig in his dorm room. >> september 9th, 2017, one of mr. williams' friends text him and asked, are you drinking now? mr. williams responds, quote, just started. but all we have is watermelon vodka and i hate watermelon. >> williams and friends walked to the party where the students drank beer. video shows williams and friends walking to a convenience store. williams is stumbling. back in his room he's alone with a female who says he threw up and says she wasn't paying attention when he he got up again to get sick again.

the woman heard a loud crash. >> e she turns around and seeing him and goes to him and he's groaning. >> that's where williams hits his head. with no visible injury, no one knew how severely he was injured. they continued to check on him when the da says he knew the freshman was not sleeping it off. >> they ato dress williams. witnesses report he became combative as they attempted to do so. he e made several comments to get off of him. >> downstairs, the students attempt to get him to the hospital and call 911. an ambulance picked him up. he died the next day. investigators say they interviewed more than a dozen students. they matched up the time line to video that was in a convenience store as well as on the college campus than. they say those times matched the accounts here and the district attorney says this was a tragic accident.

reporting live in easton, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. right now at 6:00, the world reacts after president trump threatened to destroy north korea while insulting the leader. >> rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself. the united states has great strengths and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy north korea. >> the president said north korea's nuclear tests threaten the entire world. lauren mayk is joining us now. those comment came as the president made his first ever speech to the united nations. >> he made a couple other international speeches since taking office, but this one is significant for a couple reasons. it is at the u.n., a body he criticized and belittled in the past and one that just imposed new sanctions on north korea. it is how he talked about that

country and its leader that it's getting attention. appearing at the united nations, president trump crafting a first impression. >> people might have seen him on tv, but not a talk where he lays out a philosophy. >> reporter: a historian says today the president tried to do two things at the same time. >> he talked about the u.n. in positive terms. but he also felt the need to use aggressive rhetoric as if he. wanted to make sure his supporters knew he was still the same tough guy he had been trying to be since he started running for president. >> how does that come off to the rest of the world? >> i think it's very problematic. >> he was surprised to hear president trump refer to the leader of north korea like this. >> rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself. and for his regime. >> using a name like rocket man, does that cross the line? >> i can't believe we had a president standing at the u.n.

two septa trains that sent dozens of passengers to the hospital. >> a train operator tried to stop the train, but the tracks were too slippery. this was the night the final ride and he did not have a brake problem during the first eight rides. the operator says he report ed the slib ri tracks. records show there was some rain falling at the time. the train end ed up crashing ino a train at 69th street transportation center. no one was seriously hurt. and just this weekend, a low speed derailment op the frank ford line. 30 people were ob board but no one was. now to our continuing coverage of the double hurricane threat. maria is threatening to slam puerto rico in hours while jose brings flood iing to the jersey shore. and in philadelphia today, homecoming wrags for firefighters who spent 24 days in a row helping people people through two hurricanes. they went to texas and then went

straight to florida for irma. >> tonight they are finally home. erin was there when they arrived by the bus load in northeast philadelphia this afternoon. >> after weeks of hard work on the road for hurricane harvey and hurricane irma, dozens and dozens of firefighters here in philadelphia return to a hero's welcome. you can see the baggage and equipment and some of the search and rescue dogs that went on these. trips. lots of families were out here. lots of emotion this afternoon. from sky force 10, nbc 10 following a of philadelphia first responders on their way home. >> welcome back, good seeing you. >> a hero's welcome for 80 firefighters coming back from hurricane duty. some gone as long as 24 days bouncing from texas to florida. eric was on the front lines in south florida leading search and rescue efforts. >> how are you feeling to be back? >> it's good being home. we went out there and did what

wed for. we're excited to be with our family. >> reporter: it was a family affair for the this family. home after five weeks finally able to hug his son hayden. one of dozens gone from the very beginning, an emotional toll on everyone of. >> it's been hard. but he's out helping people and doing what he needs to do. it's okay. >> what was it like seeing him for the first time? >> it was very e emotional. very emotional. >> reporter: some members of the task force are now on call for hurricane maria, meaning they did not make the trip home. but everyone who did is physically okay. >> it's pretty incredible to go for 24-day deployment to two hurricanes and not have anybody injured and really no major losses. >> reporter: now on to a well-deserved rest. hoping hurricane season over. nbc 10 news. >> as we know, it's not over yet. we're inching closer to high tide a at the jersey shore as

hurricane jose turns offshore. we're expecting moderate flooding in some places. a live look at the waves in cape may county. >> further inland, they are creating gloomy conditions. this is a live look at the wilmington sky can line. we have soem seen some showers today. a view from our campus camera looking straight down broad street in center city. >> good news here. hurricane jose staying well off the enginejersey shore. as you can see in this live satellite image right here, let's bring in meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz more about the dynamics of all this. >> we have been tracking this thing for e well over a week. it's a large storm. it just keeps spinning ask spinning and spinning and pushing waves right into the beaches. so even though it's not going to get even within 200 miles of the coast, there's going to be moderate coastal flooding. we have showers moving across the philadelphia area.

little if anything north and west of philadelphia going in toward cape cod. that's where the worst weather is going to be in the u.s. related (- jose. at least for awhile. you can see the details of those heavier showers. coming into nantucket and if the storm was closer to new jersey, that's where storm ranger 10 would be. but not as bad as what happens tonight. this is the highest. 7:45 p.m., atlantic city, a couple hours later, now what's going to happen. it's tracking out to the northeast. then east. then normally would go right to the north atlantic.

but many, many more models are showing this turn. back to the south, when you have a lot of computer models agreeing on a usual path, you take that seriously. here's something else beyond serious. there's st. croix, which is going to get devastated tonight and the perfect round eye in it. the pressure is even lower than the lowest pressure of irma. and it's going to be a category 5 when it crosses puerto rico. a 4 as it's east of the bahamas. and then as it keeps going to the north, it may start interacting with jose and bringing jose closer to us. we'll be right back.
