right now at 11. showing no mercy. tonight, hurricane maria has left its devastating mark on puerto rico. the storm dumped up to 20 impbls of rain and leaders confirm power is out across the entire island. there's now a cur fee in place until saturday to keep people safe and off the street. nbc10 is following the latest from puerto rico. with so many in the dark, communication is impossible. >> this is the strongest storp to hit puerto rico in 80 years. many not knowing if their loved ones are safe. >> reporter: when hurricane maria made land fall in puerto rico today, she showed no mercy. power knocked out across the island. phone and internet communication is sper rattic.

>> i can't get in contact with everybody. my stepmother talked to her brother yesterday. he was preparing for the worst. >> reporter: we tried face timing with journalist. the connection wasn't strong enough. our calls after numerous tries went through. >> i can see palm trees from my window. bending like rubber. rooftops flying over. >> reporter: she shot this video. hurricane irma and then maria packed a one, two punch. no power for two weeks. >> people are trying to call home and can't get through. >> i don't know how my mom at this point. >> reporter: not knowing if family is safe is difficult on the island. >> high blood pressure. >> reporter: also back here in the philadelphia region. >> things can be replaced. we're hoping that we can get a hold of them as soon as we can.

>> remain patient. the storm is unlike anything she has ever seen. and she says it's going to take time before communication is restored. >> hurricane maria is headed for other islands in the caribbean and could regain some strength. let's get an update from tammie souza. >> the latest information in is that it's still a category 2. it's intensified. look at the eye developing once again. central pressure will drop. this is likely to intensify up to category 3 or 4. about 55 miles just northeast of the dominican republic. expected to skirt along offshore there. before heading to the turks. a better leek at the eye. it disappeared when it crossed the mountains of puerto rico. it's reforming because it's over the warm water. the energy source. so it's able to strengthen and there's no sheer out there in

the atmosphere. let's take a look at where the track will take it now. it brings it fairly close to the u.s., east coast. in fact we'll be keeping a close eye on whether or not this even makes land fall somewhere. on the atlantic coast. and that's something that is going to be of concern to people. as it arches out and heads up to the east, it will be very close to the carolinas and also come fairly close and create more waves for us here in philadelphia. we'll talk about this track and a very steamy weekend forecast. >> with hurricane after hurricane. lot of travel to the caribbean has been completely cut off. still ahead, the struggle to reschedule everything from vacation to weddings. tonight new video of the ongoing rescue of a little girl trapped underneath a rubble in mexico. at a school that chapsed during yesterday's powerful earthquake. 25 people died at the school.

21 of them were studented. crews have been trying to save the girl since this morning. the death toll is now the up to 230 people. including 100 just in mexico city. a man who spent 24 hours in the rubble of a partially collapsed building was pulled out alive. back here at home. neighbors in are doing their parts to help earthquake victims organizers say they're taking food and clothing donationer friday until october 31st. the donations will be driven to red cross shelters in mexico city. breaking news from northeast philadelphia. police searching for a driver who hit a pedestrian on roosevelt boulevard and took off. the 28 year-old woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition. the crash happened in the northbound lanes near south hampton roads. some of the inner haens are still closed.

>> a young woman says she was just trying to protect a group of girls when she was attacked and robbed. on a train. that video shows the woman getting punched while others just stood by and watched. she spoke only to nbc10 denise nakano tonight. the victim told you she has no regrets. >> she doesn't. i talked to her outside the home. the attack happened on the sub way near city hall. she suffered bruises on her head and a black eye. she would step up again. >> reporter: cell phone video posted to social media shows a group of teen girls attacking temple student. on the broad street loin. >> there was two girls had hit me in the face. and at least three that at the exit that were hitting me in the back of the head. >> reporter: the vicious attack happened when she tried to stop one group of girls from bullying another smaller group of

students yesterday afternoon. >> i was trying to help out with these girls. i was trying to do the right thing. >> reporter: when she came into harms way. she found herself a lone target. while 20 to 30 passengers watched the attack unfold. passengers at the city hall exit where the attack happened watched the video and were stunned. >> wow. that's horrible. >> it's like people don't have good training at home. no offense to parents. it's like come on now. >> reporter: her attackers left her with face and head injury. and stole her iphone. given a choice he would help again. she just wishes others would do the same. >> it's not okay to standby and let somebody be attacked. we're supposed to be the city of brother brotherly love. we need to come together. >> police are looking to identify the teenagers and arrest could coming as soon as
