we are getting a closer look at the devastation left behind in puerto rico. every minute counts in the quest to find survivors trapped in the rubble of the deadly earthquake in mexico. hit by a foul ball. a young fan smacked by a line drive is renewing safety concerns at major league baseball games. right now at 11:00 the devastation of hurricane maria. the powerful storm ripped through leaving widespread damage. authorities say nearly the entire island is cut off from electricity. it could be months before power

is left back on. this is new video. debris from buildings blocked many of the roads. maria is currently a category 3 hurricane. it caused at least ten deaths across the caribbean. it makes federal funding available to people effected by the storm. gabe shows us the conditions in san juan this morning. >> reporter: it is extremely lift to get around san juan. power lines are down. power is out for the entire island. many roads are impossible as well streets are flooded and we are just starting to get our first look as the sun comes up. this building torn apart. puerto rico's governor imposed an overnight curfew as authorities begin to assess the

damage. this was a powerful category 4 hurricane that slammed into puerto rico. the first to mitt the island since 1932. maria is continuing through the path, reintensifying into a category 3 storm. here in puerto rico the extent of the damage is still being assessed. water rescue teams will be here today to try and help those in need. authorities fear this could be a catastrophic event and power could be out for some areas for four to six months. back to you. >> gabe is reporting. right now hurricane maria is slowly moving past the dominican republic. the storm is hiettting the island with high winds and high seas. they are already dealing with flooding. tourists have been moved away

from the coast. people are scrambling to leave the island ahead of maria. yesterday lines of people wrapped around the airport. rez residents stokdcked up on food. families here in our area are keeping a close eye on maria stunned by the devastation the storm left behind. we are live this morning in north philadelphia where he spoke with community members who have family in puerto rico. >> north philadelphia has a very large puerto rico population. some unable to communicate over the past couple of days. others getting a cell phone signal for the first time this morning. from his north philadelphia restaurant santiago tries to get updates from his family living in puerto rico.

>> destroys everything everything everything. >> communication has been nearly impossible. today he got through to his niece, rudy. >> we don't have no electricity, no water. >> she sent along this video and says her entire neighborhood was ielter blown away or flooded. her house is no longer standing. >> 35 houses. >> yeah. only in that neighborhood. >> this difficult story is playing out with the second largest puerto rico population. thousands worrying about their loved ones. power out across most of the island.

>> it's a big disaster. >> they say in the coming days the entire country will need to stand up for puerto rico. this sunday in philadelphia. today we are expecting leaders to announce fundraising efforts to help those down on the island. nbc 10 news. >> thanks for that. now to tropical storm jose. the storm is swirling 150 miles off the coast of massachusetts bringing rough surf and coastal flooding to parts of new england. the waters are starting to calm down. there is still an elevated rip current risk. it is officially the last full day of summer. here is a live look over center city philadelphia. it is a beautiful day to eat lunch outside. we are tracking the warm sunny weather. >> it is a gorgeous day. we are already past our normal

high temperatures for the last day of summer. beautiful view looking across delaware. no fog with mostly clear skies. temperatures are wasting no time. already 82 in philadelphia. the normal high is 76 degrees. so we are way past that. delaware suburbs, lehigh all warming up quickly. at the shore 80 degrees in upper township and 78 in atlantic city. a last day of summer that is a warm one at the shore which is no surprise. a few people enjoying the last sum are day of cape may. they do have a problem that rosemary mentioned chltd the rip current will remain high through the day today and through this evening. it is a high risk of dangerous rip currents. it is just enough to cause problems. that's because of jose. jose still spinning out in the ocean well outside of our areas. the showers will come nowhere near us.

we'll get that rip current. the temperatures peak in the 80s. we could be closer to 90 degrees over the weekend. i have the weekend forecast coming up plus we'll take a look at where maria is going when i come back in a few minutes. >> thank you. hurricane season has several weeks to go. you can track the storms. the app also lets you customize the forecast for your neighborhood and sends you alerts as soon as they are issued. from one natural disaster to another let's talk about the latest on the earthquake in mexico which killed 245 people so far. nearly two days after the magnitude 7.1 quake they are sheershe searching for survivors. hundreds have renewed hope after they were able to see the wiggling fingers of the young girl trapped in the rubble. crews have been carefully

picking away. one rescuer says they are meters away from that little girl. take a look at this. parts of the building crumbling families are taking cover as they are afraid to return to any tall buildings. back here in our area news out of northeast philadelphia a woman remains in the hospital after a driver hit her. the accident happened around 9:45 last night near south hampton road. the driver originally left the scene but then returned. the victim is in critical condition. she is expected to survive. let's head now to philadelphia's neighborhood where police had to evacuate an entire block after they made a surprise discovery during an eviction. they found two pipe bombs inside the house. they had to call on the bomb squad to remove them. investigators have not said whether the suspect had any

plans to use the bombs. students in montgomery county will go back to school tomorrow after teachers in their district agreed to end the strike. the strike forced schools to cancel classes for the last three days. the school is closed today as well but that's because of the jewish holiday. the teachers union agreed to go to work out their differences. teachers have been without a contract since june. all right. let's get a check of the roads now. >> watching things right now. it is one of the only one that has any kind of delay around center city. so watch for some of that. watch for 95 around broad street. there is construction with lane blocks there. in delaware flooding and a closure in new castle. it is east and westbound in both

police have arrested a sixth person in connection to last week's attack. detectives took a 17-year-old and searched the property where they found him. they say a significant amount of activity has taken place since that bomb injured 30 people. president trump doubles down on north korea saying we will be putting more sanctions on north korea

wilmington. that's helping to keep our temperatures down believe it or not. without that wind we would be even warmer today. 82 degrees in philadelphia. some neighborhoods have gone even a little bit warmer. it is still in the 70s in parkwood. the temperatures will climb into the upper 80s today. as you can see, there is more to come even though autumn arrives tomorrow. we'll be cooler in the afternoon. back in the upper 80s. it will feel like the middle of summer. keeping back in will be humidity as well. you'll feel it if you're going to the eagles game on sunday. average high temperature 76 degrees. we are well above that. we are getting clouds ever so often. mostly it will be sunshine for today. the chance of some of these clouds blowing in will continue into this evening and into tomorrow. i think all of this rain will

stay offshore. that is a weakening storm. it is still a strong tropical storm with 60 miles per hour winds it will stay out of our hair. this is a cold front. it is not moving much. it is spreading showers and thunderstorms into the midwest. it is not going to reach us. the question is what becomes of maria? it is pulling awand and just to the northeast. it is close enough to do damage and cause lots of trouble into tomorrow. it means we'll stay dry and our weekend will be sunny and warp.m. it will weaken. this is sunday morning. we will track this storm system well into next week while we enjoy warm summer-like weather. that includes the first weekend of fall which will feel like it is a typical summer weekend.

in puerto rico people are just beginning to assess the damage from hurricane maria. it was hit with landslides downed trees and the power is out for practically the entire island. authorities say it could be out in some areas for the next four to six months. because of those power outages folks here in our area are having a bit of trouble

contacting their loved ones. we are live from north philadelphia with that part of the story, randy. we'll check back with randy in a few moments. in the meantime we do continue to watch what's happening with hurricane maria. and bill is keeping a forecast on the eye for our area. keeping a live look at cape may. looks like a great day of summer. >> if you're on the beach you can enjoy a gorgeous day. temperatures are riseingeing quickly. they are already near the 80 degree mark. it is already in the 80s in wilmington. it doesn't feel as hot. we have a good breeze blowing. winds are gustier. they are gusting to 25 miles per hour. they are blowing in that warm breeze. already 82 degrees in delaware.

it is 82 in philadelphia and 80 in south jersey. a couple of spots still in the 70s. delaware, most neighborhoodsre in the 60s this morning. look at middle town climbing. 79 degrees at this hour. it is in the upper 70s here. now, there will be a few scattered clouds. the thicker rain producing clouds will stay out of the picture for us. you can see the nice center of the storm. about 150 miles southeast of na spreading rain winds55us moer hour for new england. winds will be dying down over the next few days. jose will continue to weaken. so less of an influence and cert risk will remain high w for tomorrow. for today 86 degrees in new jersey. a warm day too.

in need. you for that. you can track the tropicsny time by downloading this free nbc 10 app. we'll send instant alerts as soon as they are issued. all right. let's talk about what's happening in mexico. the death toll continues to climb following that devastating earthquake that shook mexico this week. it continues in the hope of finding under collapsed buildings. workers are trying desperately to reach a trapped girl. >> this is the focus really of the entire country at this point. this rescue of this one girl so much hope is riding on this because of how grim the last few hours have been. now we are in a situation which we have to a very crucial time when it comes to a rescue effort.

21 young students were killed when this building collapsed during the earthquake. four stories folded on top of each other, trapping the people that were inside. 25 total killed. they identify that had young girl inside the rubble. she is about 12 years old in an area where they believe there may be a pocket of survivor i after they managed to find her vital signs and got down to her. so what they are trying to do is pull the debris off. they have to do it so carefully because they don't want to cause another situation in which more rubble comes and crushes the area that's in there already. they are thinking about a number of options including cutting a hole to try to pull people out of there. that is why this is taking so long. it is a real race against time and crews are up against it at this point. >> that was steve patterson reporting.

neighbors in philadelphia are doing their part. a group already set up ation to takely. collect from now until october 31st. donations will go to red cross shelters in mexico city. a man won a $338 million power ball is facing child sex assault charges. he is accused of sexually assaulting the girl from the time she was 11 until she was 14. he won back in 2013 after buying the ticket. his lawyer says the alleged victim just wants a piece of his client's money. it is not the first legal trouble he has been involved in. neighbors accused him of not following true to pay the rent of everyone on his block and a contractor sued h pay for home renovations. a two-year-old girl at last night's game foul ball it is renewing for baseball

i saw a post from jen and i reached out. i thought that's what i had to do. >> jen, tell us about this type of partnership and more about your organization. >> we are philadelphia's very first nonprofit to train service dogs for veterans. we start the puppies out at eight weeks and they are in training for about two years! how old is liberty? >> she is about four months. >> so she is just getting started? >> yes. >> and you're an employee of comcast. comcast has a robust plan in terms of hiring veterans. what makes it so attractive to hire a veteran? what's the advantage? >> i think that all of the veterans, you know, they are trained. they are loyal. you can count on them. comcast has the initiative to hire 10,000 veterans by the end of this year. june we were up around 8,000 at that point. so it's a good thing.

lower. the wind will be coming out of the north. it won't be quite as strong. by 1:00 in the afternoon holding in the upper 80s at 3:00. by late in the game 86. if you're going to the game you'll need your sunglasses. those light winds we have right now will be finally dying down overnight tonight. during the day the temperatures in spite of those northerly winds which are cooling for us are warming into the 80s. that includes the suburbs. it is 82 at this hour. new hope just hit 80 degrees. climb sbooging into the middle 80s today it will be fall. autumn arrives tomorrow av afternoon. it will feel like summer through next week. we have clouds to the east. that storm eventually will die out and won't be a tropical storm anymore.

the next 24 hours likely to maintain the tropical storm strength at 60 miles per hour. still a lot of rain and waves that are reaching the shore. the rip current will remain high. as far as maria is concerned spinning just offshore of the doeminican republic is expect today pass by tomorrow and then potentially we will see it move up the east coast. i think it will stay offshore and out of our area. so we are looking at 80s. fall arrives tomorrow. 80s through the weekend abdomennd into next week. we get a cold front and there is your cold weather next thursday friday and saturday. september is hunger angstction month. it is hard to believe that when we have one in eight people in the u.s. doesn't know how they will feed themselves or even their families. one in five people are impacted. that's why they are teaming up
