flooding tonight. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. this evening families in our area are sfrdesperate to hear f loved ones stuck on the island slammed by the storm and maria isn't done yet. after crippling puerto rico, hurricane maria is continuing its path through the caribbean. it is lashing out at parts of the dmominican republic. t and new video from puerto rico shows streets blocked by downed trees and power lines. the mayor of san juan says people could be without power for up to six months. flooding is still a concern there now with maria's outer bands continuing to lash the islands. san juan's airport is open but only for military and other rescue and relief missions. we are bringing you live team coverage of maria's wrath tonight. where the storm is headed now. but let's begin with aaron

baskerville. here in philadelphia people are left in lincoln bow with no way to reach their loved ones in puerto rico. >> reporter: it's not an easy time for folks out here. they are desperate. they are searching for any small glimmer of hope. but so far absolutely nothing for so many. behind me this is what you're going to see over here we're near 2nd and by kensington area. 2nd and allegheny. you can see over here this pop-up stand, it's for the puerto rican parade this weekend. it's become a gathering spot for many folks talking about their relatives in puerto rico. freddy and tony's another restaurant, another meeting spot. workers inside there, customers are desperate. everyone out there sharing their stories of pain tonight. freddy and tony's a restaurant with ties to puerto rico go for comfort. but for jessica perez behind the counter, that's hard to come by. she hasn't talked to her mother, brother, or sister since maria

made landfall on the island. >> i tried calling my friends from pr. i tried calling a hotline number. the red cross. and no communication. >> reporter: this woman is also in limbo checking her phone every minute. her mother and sister dealing with the massive storm. this disaster not doing her health any favors. >> i have high blood pressure so imagine how my pressure is, okay? i don't sleep. i don't eat. >> reporter: it could take months and months to rebuild, a fact not lost on the head of the hispanic agency concilio and member of the 25-group committee looking to raise money for maria. >> people in puerto rico are devastated. and this is the most important time right now that we show solidarity. >> back over at freddy and tony's, work is a much needed distraction for perez as she hopes for that text or phone call to ease her mind.

>> i cry. i think the worst. and my family tells me, you know, to stay positive. but it's hard. >> reporter: and we're told this will continue to be the gathering spot over the next few days. stands like this where people can continue to share their stories just before we went live we checked back in with jessica perez. unfortunately, she still has not heard from her mother, brother, or sister over in puerto rico. for now we're live in kensington, aaron baskerville, nbc 10 news. >> anxious ander nerve-racking waiting game. maria will head east. whether this storm impacts us will remain to be seen. let's bring in meteorologist tammie souza with the latest on the track. >> it's somewhere upwards of a dozen islands in the caribbean that have been flattened between irma and maria. and then you add into that what happened with harvey. you add into the key islands. florida keys and then go into

florida, georgia, and south carolina. and this has been a very rough season with very powerful hurricanes. you can see now the eye is becoming a little bit more well formed. it is about 112 miles from the turks and caicos. it's moving off to the northwest at about 9 miles an hour. it's not good it's getting such a nice, clear eye again. that means it's reintensifying. it's moving over very warm water as well. this is a category 3 storm. 120 mile-an-hour wind storm. it will be over the turks and caicos tomorrow. early in the morning through about midday. then it should track east of the bahamas which is good news for the bahamas. it should stay between bermuda and the u.s. mainland. and downgraded to around a category 1. it may stay, too, further north. the water starts to cool here and it's not as favorable conditions. this cone has straightened out a little bit. could make it up further into the north atlantic. we're going to be watching. this is the european model, what

goes on with this. you can see this is the track right now that it is believed to take. this is just a future cast model. but it does keep it off shore. then it takes it off to the north and the east. we'll see high surf. we'll see more beach erosion and dangerous rip currents. if that's all we see, we'll be quite lucky. we'll talk more about the steamy forecast when i come back in a few minutes. philadelphia's puerto rican community is coming together to help people on the zef stadevas island. announced plans for fund raising at this sunday's puerto rican day parade. those plans will include a telethon at the parade. philadelphia has one of the largest puerto ri can populations in the country. 8% of the city has tied to the island. stay on top of maria and any storm that heads our way this active hurricane season. keep up on the free nbc 10 app. sign up for free alerts so you know when a weather threat is 30 minutes out from your exact location.

now to the latest on the earthquake in mexico. mexican military officials now say there are no children under a collapsed mexico city school. their rescue became the focus of first responders and people around the world. officials now say all of the children have been accounted for. but they believe an adult could be trapped and still alive. and this just in. we have now learned the death toll is up to at least 273 people. that includes the 21 school children and 5 adults in mexico city. here at home, local response crews are training to react to natural disasters. just like the earthquake in mexico. collapsed rescue 2 is a specialized unit of the camden city fire department. today they showed us the tools, technology, and heavy rescue resources crews in mexico city are also using. they say no matter how bad it looks, the goal is to keep hope that victims are still alive.

>> we know that we're there to rescue people. we know that as soon as we're there, it's -- you know, it's a sense of satisfaction once we get to them knowing we can get them out especially alive. >> crews and search dogs with nj task form 1 also showed us how they sniff and search for sounds and signs of life beneath heavy rubble. stay tuned to "nbc nightly news" with lester holt for the latest in mexico. that's after this newscast. right now at 6:00, busted for a mainline jewelry heist. investigators say this man stole $100,000 in watches while holding the store up at gun point. nbc 10's deanna durante joins us live. you had a conversation with him. he said it wasn't me, police have the wrong guy. >> reporter: he said that multiple times. he says he looks nothing like the guy in the surveillance pictures that police released after this armed robbery. you'll see those pictures again for yourself. and he also tells me, he's innocent.

>> that store is very racist. >> reporter: so you were in the store? >> allegedly. >> reporter: joseph taylor isn't denying he was inside the bernie robbins jewelry store when we talked to him after being sent back to prison. after a judge says he found enough evidence to hold him over on armed robbery charges. police say this is taylor holding a gun and wearing a fedora and he was holding up the store manager. that's not you in the pictures? >> does it look like it? >> reporter: it does look like it. the store manager testifies when taylor entered the store, he asked him his name and he responded, joe. you used your own name. >> because i mean, i'm not guilty, right? if i use my name i'm not guilty of a crime, right? he admitted that i never even pointed the weapon at him. >> reporter: did you have a weapon? >> allegedly. >> reporter: now, radnor police along with philadelphia police and the fbi worked to locate this suspect. we're also told an anonymous tip led them to taylor.

what they haven't found, those nine rolex watches worth more than $100,000. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. this just in. this man is being charged with having weapons of mass destruction. police say when they were called in to help evict shay yesterday, they found two pipe bombs inside the home. two police canines helped sniff out the bombs. now to the latest in the crisis with north korea. today president trump dealt the toughest sanctions yet against the rogue nation to try to stop its nuclear weapons program. >> it is unacceptable that others financially support this criminal, rogue regime. >> the president issued an ultimatum to the world. if you do business with north korea, the u.s. will not do business with you. and even china signed on after the president spent months calling for the country to help pressure its close ally.

today we got a look at what thieves put on local atms to help them steal your money. take a look at this skimming device. philadelphia major crimes says it was discovered on a local atm. it includes a camera that recorded bank customers' pin numbers. devices were found on banks in philadelphia, bucks, and montgomery counties. police are looking for two men they believe are responsible. farm animals in the city? some think it's strange, but one city council member in wilmington says his residents should have the right to keep the therapeutic farm animal at

backgrounds emotionally. >> reporter: but farm animals in the city where there isn't always a big grassy yard, karen isn't totally sold. she wants to be fair to the animals too. >> if it helps people, that's great. i think there needs to be a close monitoring. make some sort of registration. nobody came to them and asked them specifically to let them have farm animals in the city. he now recognizes there are a ton of unanswered questions about the animals, they space they need, cleaning up after the animals. he has now decided to table the bill at least temporarily. so far now farm animals will stay on farms and out of wilmington back yards. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. a young seal is recovering at the jersey shore before shuffling off to buffalo to live out the rest of his life. this little guy's flipper was amputated after a boating accident this past april. he's been healing at the marine

mammals center and learning to swim without his flipper. tomorrow he is moving to the aquarium of niagara. turning to our neighborhood weather, it is feeling like summer. you felt it out there on this last day of the summer season officially. you're looking live at the beach in cape may where there is a threat because of jose churning off the yer see shore. but jose does keep weakening. further inland temperatures are heating up. warm and sunny night for a run along kelly drive. it is hot for people who have to work outside. thus guy was out painting hopefully keeping cool. it will keep heating up into your weekend. a live look at lincoln financial field. we'll have a lot of sunshine and heat for the first weekend of fall let's bring in meteorologist tammie souza for the latest on our really warm

weekend. >> the guy you showed us outside working, let's ask him in january if he thinks it's too hot today. then he'll have a different answer. people out enjoying the beach. it feels like though. we sh vhave a bit of a heat ind. if we go to wilmington, feels like 84. north/northwest winds. finally let's stop in philadelphia where it's 84 degrees, feels like 84. we have a north wind 10 miles per hour. what you might notice is a high, thin cloud deck. those are cirrus clouds and all the tops coming off of jose. still just basically stationary off of the east coast. look at the temperatures for tomorrow. we make it into the low 80 stz across much of the area. where we'll see temperatures that could top out at the upper 70s. but this is still -- all of these are above where we should be this time of year. we should be for the most part about 76 degrees. as we look at our doppler radar,

not a lot going on. it's quiet. high thin clouds in place. here is the radar rotation. there is more rain out to the east. some of these showers could cascade in, it looks, perhaps even as early as tomorrow. just grazing the shore with maybe a band or two. that'll be tomorrow around noon. we make it into the low 80s tomorrow. look at the winds, out of the north even along the beaches. and then on saturday, we make it into the mid and upper 80s across the area. 86. look at the winds starting to turn out of the east. only 77 in cape may. we could see 86 or 88 in philadelphia. and then on sunday, this is just crazy. could be 90 in philadelphia. look at the beaches in the upper 70s a and that's because of an east wind. keening us nice and clear. and the place that's not clear, well, that would be this. hurricane maria becoming a more well defined eye. and this storm is now moving off

to the north and the east. or north and the west. and the spaghetti models bring it out into the atlantic off shore. a couple of them bring it into our neighborhood. not a lot, just a couple. so tonight your neighborhood forecast generally in the 60s. if you're in the inland areas, you'll see the 50s and a mix of moon and little bit of high clouds. the young phillies have been serving notice that they just might be for real. today they took their chance at sweeping the best team in the national league. plus a fanatic was looking for love at the ballpark today. we'll see if he struck out or hit a home run. that's next. we just moved in about four months ago,

hey, hey. good to see you again. the eagles have a massive opportunity in their home opener sunday. they can drop their division rival giants to 0-3. but to do it they'll have to stop one of the best receivers in the game with an injury ravaged secondary. odell beckham jr. has been injured himself. only four catches for 35 years in the season debut last week. but he was coming off an ankle injury. now face an eagles secondary missing four players due to injury including two starters. douglas is among the reserves who needs to step up. >> i think all of our guys are ready. coach does a great job of making sure we all take our reps. i practiced like i was a starter like i was going to play. knowing i wasn't, but i still gave it everything i had to get myself better and to get the offense better. so we all practice like we're going to be the guys they call up.
