sized boat. this is just off the coast of puerto rico. the paem called as hurricane maria was slamming with high waves and strong winds. a man on that boat died but a british royal navy helicopter pulled the rest of the passengers to safety. number o numbers are expected to rise. rescue crews fuel is hard to find. the island will come back from that devastation. randy is live along the ben

and replace. they are making the push because time is a factor here. republicans want to vote on this bill by the endweek. some of the most controversial items include ending obamacare's expansion and subsidies. instead states would receive grants. some worry it would decrease coverage for preexisting conditions. leaders in philadelphia say if the gop's health care bill passes theye to cut funding. project home, a local homeless outreach group opposes. the director of philadelphia's office of homeless services says the affordable care act provides 8,000 homes for those who don't have one. she adds the program has a 90% success rate in keeping people off of the city streets. they say the negative effects

next week. for us the sunshine continues on saturday. philadelphia is 87 degrees up to 8 # and 81 at the jersey shore. a warm day on saturday but it's going to turn hot. the humidity will be creeping up some. you'll feel the difference on sunday. at the shore upper 80s near 90 for delaware. the suburbs, new jersey in the upper it means the eagles are in for a toasty one on the field. it is 90 at 3:00. it will feel even hotter in the bright sunshine and near 90 at 5:00. mostly sunny skies. the trend is for this warm weather to continue right on past the weekend even though fall arrives this afternoon it will feel like summer right on through monday, tuesday and wednesday. you can see some cooling. it will come with more clouds

september is childhood cancer awareness or support saint jude's childrens hospital at the walk and run to end childhood cancer. they are the cochairs of this year's event. thank you for being here. >> thanks for having us. >> a lot of people have heard of saint jude's but talk about what the research hospital does and why you volunteer. >> i have been volunteering since 2005. to me no child should die. this is something we really want

to raise money and awareness for. it really is the most important thing will receive a bill for their child receiving treatment at saint jude. they are housing, lodging, all covered by donations. mostly individual donations. it it takes about $2.4 million. received treatment. my next question and the hospital is in memphis. why should people here support a hospital there? >> it is with hospitals all around the world. if they find a protocol that works far specific type of cancer they will hit a button on

touchdown! puerto rico tryiies to recor from the storms. we learned the storm has killed at least six people on the island. millions of people on the u.s. territory face the possibility of spending weeks and perhaps months without electricity. gabe has the latest now from

puerto rico. >> we are here in historic old san juan. this is an old building that was being restored. communication systems are down throughout the island. there is one report that 95% of kplun cas kmooun cas communications are down. the category four storm and the infrastrauktu infrastructure has been weakened days before. more than 60,000 customers were still without power following hurricane irma. this island is without power. again, a major concern here in puerto rico is the lack of kplun cases. most cell towers are down. the clean up will continue today

here in san juan as well as other parts that remain flooded. back to you. >> that was nbc reporting. people will have the opportunity to help those people. randy is live along the ben franklin parkway. >> yeah. philadelphia has one of the largest puerto rico populations in the country. all day tomorrow spanish speaking radio station will be raising funds along with the red cross for puerto rico. right now it's cash donations that are the best way to help. this is usually a big celebration. a real sense of urgency. people try to rebuild the island so many call home.

weather you're not going find it. plenty of sunshine and warm today as we look at center city philadelphia. temperatures will climb this weekend as well. bill henley is here with the most accurate forecast. >> yeah. we are in for a bonus week of weather. we are seeing fewer clouds now. just high fair weather clouds blowing through. clouds are complete. that's a cloudy view. people are still out and about enjoying the ocean view. part of that may be due to the temperatures which are still cool. the other reason they may not be getting in the weather is the rip current risk with jose still churning offshore. it is dangerously high and will be elevated through the weekend.

showers won't come until next week. you can see the showers coming through. there are pretty good breaks in the clouds. getting lots of sunshine. if you're seeing clouds sunshine is on the way. you will see it today. you'll be able to watch the spin offshore. it is parked there for now. eventually it will get pushed there. this is the storm that's strengthened the last 24 hours. maria is barely crawling. it is 55 miles outside of the islands and churning winds into those. it accelerated a little bit. it is now moving at 8:00 miles per hour. it is a very slow move. it will remain a category 3 storm for almost the next 48 hours. today drops down to a 2 and then eventually a 1. it kind of goes up the east coast. it looks like it will stay

offshore and to the west of bermuda too. it will be churning up the surf and up the east coast. that's something we'll have to watch for much of next weekend. it could lead to more beach erosion as well. through it all we'll enjoy nice summer-like weather. it is 84 in philadelphia today. warmer this weekend. there are morning temperatures in the 60s. it is 90 on sunday which means a hot eagles game. humidity bumps up some during the afternoon. not going to feel like july but if you're in the bright sunshine it will feel like it's more than 90 degrees. we'll get close to 90 it may make it into the 90s in some neighborhoods. temperatures start to come down but warm on tuesday with a chaps of showers on tuesday. by thursday we have sunshine once again and finally fall weather arrives and look at next
