are still having e vacuw -- >> good morning, craig. some 70,000 people are being evacuated from those communities but all across the island it's becoming an incredibly desperate situation. this morning a desperate race against time to save those trapped after hurricane maria battered puerto rico. with the san juan mayor leading the charge. >> i got an s.o.s. from somebody here that had my number and they texted and one of those messages that i've received so often in the past saying if anyone can hear us. those are the most devastating words. if anyone can hear us, please come. >> reporter: so she did. with plenty of help. >> were you worried out there? >> oh, yes. oh, yes, i was.

because this is which number of day? and, you know, i said oh my god, i don't see anyone in their houses. >> reporter: in the north western part of the island, an extremely dangerous dam failure is forcing some 70,000 to evacuate. dramatic rescues are under way. this mother and her two children plucked from their battered boat just off the coast. dozens dead as the category 5 hurricane tore through the caribbean finally losing team after high winds and rain pummeled turks and caicos. in hard hit puerto rico, so many have lost so much. >> you lose everything. you lose everything. you have to start from zero no. clothes, no nothing. >> reporter: nearly the entire island has no power. the power grid devastated meaning puerto rico will likely remain in the dark for months. >> for irma we had no power for

more than ten days. for this one, i would say months. >> reporter: they're island dark, but not their resolve. >> people started lining up here behind me at 3:00 a.m. to buy gas. the gas station doesn't even open until 8:00 a.m. and they'll only be able to get $20 worth of gas, a sign of how limited the basic necessities are here on the island. >> tammy for us there. thank you. it is hard to get your head around the devastation in puerto rico. >> and the journey ahead, frankly. let's check in with dylan tracking hurricane maria for us. is maria a threat to the east coast? >> some model it is are trying to make it a threat to the east coast. it is a category 3 right now. winds up to 120 miles per hour. it's moving north/northwest at nine miles per hour. on this track, this is the center of the track from the national hurricane center t looks like it's going to stay

mostly out to sea as the storm weakens, but we have to keep in mind that the left side of this cone of uncertainty is still a possibility of what may happen. so if we take a look at what we call the spaghetti plot, it's a plot of all the different computer models. the majority want to keep them between these areas of high pressure meaning it should turnout to sea. there are a few models including the american and the european that want to bring the storm close to cape hatteras in north carolina. we should see that cold front push everything out to sea very quickly so it will not linger. there's the possibility we could see a weaker storm try to approach the outer banks. there's a possibility also of 20 to 25 foot waves for the outer banks, even up into the mid atlantic we could see 10 to 15 foot waves. that will be a concern going forward but that's not until next wednesday. it will be a lot of time to iron out the details of that part of the storm. >> thank you, dylan. to mexico city where rescue crews are working around the clock there to find survivors

from that horrific earthquake. it's been four days now since the earth quick struck. nbc ron mott remains in mexico city. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is the critical fourth day after this experts say the chances of finding survivors drops dramatically. overnight they brought in this crane. they'll start lifting off large slabs to get down to where people are. this is literally a life and death race against time. a fight for life with time running out to save victims trapped under a mountain of concrete on the second floor of this pancaked employment agency building. members of the los angeles fire department's urban search and rescue unit joining the mission. >> that's the only location where there's still missing people. we've got a floor plan. we were told where the six were. >> reporter: for days rescuers have scooped debris into pails

trying not to disturb the rubble. the death toll could grow to more than 300 including the wife of american photo journalist wesley killed when the building collapsed. the couple running to the roof. >> we barely made it up when the shaking started happening. we were standing on the roof saying what are we going to do, are we going to be alive in the next ten minutes. all of a sudden the floors started pancaking. boom, boom, boom. my wife is nowhere to be seen. >> he survived with multiple broken bones, both legs, ribs and an arm. around mexico's capital, hoards of volunteers have worked around the clock organizing and delivering relief supplies, refusing to wait on government aid. among them former american d.r.e.a.m.ers like miguel perez who came back to his native

country in 2015. >> i want people to come back and make mexico a better place. >> the tragedy still unfolding is personal for one mexican born rescuer from l.a. >> being here, especially since this is my country is very gratifying. >> there have been 60 or so rescues here this week and all the families and friends who have been camped out here hoping to add names to that list. now to some breaking news iran state media reporting that country has tested a ballistic missile. in tehran with more. >> it doesn't take long for iran to respond to president trump u.n. speech. video of a rocket being launched late last night saying iran successfully tested the long range ballistic missile. this missile appears to have been unveiled earlier during the day when iran conducted a military parade. state tv are reporting that it was tested a few hours after

being rolled out on that parade. the revolution regard claim the latest ballistic missile is capable of carrying multiple warheads and has a range of 1,200 miles putting much of the middle east within its reach including isreal. state tv also reported the missile adds to isreal's misery and it will be their nightmare as it can accurately target the occupied lands completely. this is iran's fourth missile test this year and its sure to ratchet up tensions even further before washington and teheran. we're also following breaking news out of north korea where a 3.0 quake was detected 12 miles from where they recently conducted a nuclear test. there were fears at first that this was another test. but the south koreans are now saying they believe it's just a natural occurrence. this morning the nfl is vowing to fight a lawsuit filed by the estate of former star player aaron hernandez. hernandez a convicted murderer

killed himself in prison earlier this year. an autopsy released just this week showed that hernandez surfed from cte, a brain disease caused by severe head trauma. the latest from nbc stephanie goss. >> reporter: aaron hernandez took his share of hates. even so researchers say they were stunned after an examination of his brain after the death showed a severe case of cte. he was just 27 years old. only played in the nfl three years. >> we're told that it was the most severe case they had ever seen in -- for someone of aaron's age. >> reporter: earlier this year hernandez hanged himself in his prison cell while serving a life sentence on a murder conviction. >> there's no question in my mind whatsoever that cte was

responsible for his violent criminal behavior and for his eve eventual suicide. >> reporter: cte can cause problems with aggression, dementia and mood swings. some say that may explain his actions. the diagnosis rattled some current and former football players including hall of famer cris carter. >> i'm conflicted. it's a game that i love and given the information that i have, i hope the rest of my life works out well. >> reporter: hernandez's estate is now suing the patriots and the nfl for $20 million on behalf of his 4-year-old daughter saying the league was aware of the risks and failed to disclose, treat or protect him from the dangers of such damage. the nfl is vowing to fight the lawsuit. >> we intend to contest the claim vigorously. >> the question isn't whether there are any risks. the question from the legal standpoint is whether the nfl acted in some irresponsible way for a known risk it could have

prevented. >> reporter: for today, nbc news, new york. re leave overnight for the five hostages finally released in an hours long standoff between police and a man armed with a machete at a tennessee bank. he took nine people hostage before releasing four from the community first bank and trust in columbia. none of the hostages were hurt and a motive is unclear. the suspect is now reportedly in custody. an update in the wake of the video that shows a cheer leading coach forcing students into doing extreme splits. again, this video is disturbing to watch. quick warning there. the colorado high school principal retired and the athletic director resigned friday after an investigation found that both were aware that the videos existed months before they became public. investigators say they took no disciplinary action and did not act on principal complaints. the principal denied he had prior access to the videos. both have been suspended since the video emerged last month.

greg feldman is accused of shooting the mother of his ex-girlfriend right in the doorway of their home. skyforce 10 was over the scene yesterday afternoon on long meadow road in limerick township. police tell us feldman shot amy hermann twice when she told him to leave after he asked to see her daughter. feldman then allegedly told the daughter that he wanted her to feel his pain. victim amy hermann suffered chest and neck wounds. we're working more to find out more about her condition this morning. in the meantime feldman faces several charges including attempted murder. police want you on the look out for his car. he was last seen driving a 2016 black mazda sedan with a pennsylvania license plate kfc-4605. today, in philadelphia firefighters will be installing smoke alarms in houses right along east westmoreland street in kensington. members of the spanish american firefighters association are scheduled -- have scheduled the installation in honor of hispanic heritage month. that's going to do it for us for

the depth of suffering that other people are experiencing. >> they invited us to come along. this dc 8 cargo plane left north carolina with 50,000 pounds of emergency supplies from toothpaste and toothbrushing to backup generators and more than a dozen people here to devote their time and skills to the recovery. and in the back 13 people not only bringing supplies but also their expertise. scott is a retired army sergeant and telecommunication specialist. >> why do you do this? >> i just love helping people. it's so much fun to get out there and to be able to use the skill set i have to help somebody who is in need. >> there's no cell service at all here. >> now he's ready to hit the ground running lifting the boxes to help carry the burden of the people who need it most. >> what's been the hardest part? >> the hardest part is communication.

shooting involving a toddler. a man is recovering after his 3-year-old nephew managed to reach under a car seat, grab a gun and shoot him. you can see police consoling the boy in center city yesterday. police tell us the gun belongs to his uncle who's an officer with the philadelphia housing authority. the officer was offduty at the time. police say he was shot just moments after putting the gun under the passenger seat of his car because he couldn't take it inside city hall. and that's where he was headed. investigators are now looking into the incident. today in philadelphia's fairmount neighborhood, eastern state penitentiary will host an event called pets in prison. family can learn about the history of animals at the former prison like pets kept by prisoners in solitary confinement. can meet and adopt dogs from local prison dog training programs. and nbc 10 is committed to clearing the shelters. join us at 8:30 when we'll introduce you to an adoptable pet. i'm rosemary connors. krystal and i will be right back here at 8:30 with a full hour of

protesting the national anthem to frustration over republicans who didn't repeal obamacare. >> rocket man should have been handled a long time ago. get that [ bleep ] off the field right now. they don't have the guts to vote for it. >> reporter: and in a string of new tweets this morning, the president is going after those senators who have not come out in support of this latest attempt to repeal obamacare. after john mccain came out after it, the president tweeted today that this bill would be great for arizona. john mccain let his friend l.g. down. l.g. meaning senator lindsey graham who is one of the co-authors of this new proposal. it's going to be a big fight because the republicans could fight this week. they can't afford to lose one more senator. we're also following breaking news out of north korea where a magnitude 3.20 quake was

detected in the country's north eastern portion there, 12 miles from where they recently conducted a nuclear test. initially there were fears that was also a test but south korea is saying it may have just been a natural occurrence. in puerto rico there is frantic evacuation amid fears -- heavy rainfall from hurricane maria has swollen the reservoir behind the near 90-year-old dam. they sent buses in and posted on twitter. for many those went unseen because nearly all the island is without power. time also running out in mexico city where rescue crews and volunteers are working around the clock to find survivors from that horrific earth wake. it's been four days since the 7.1 struck collapsing schools, homes and other buildings throughout the country's capital. the death toll has risen to at least 295 with little time and hope left to find survivors

among the rubble. >> certainly pulling for all of them. dylan is out on the plaza. >> just chatting with the crowd. good morning. let's take a look at the weather going on across the country. we are looking at the possibility of maria coming maybe close to the east coast. right now it is a category 3 hurricane. 120 mile per hour winds but it's going to weaken. the majority of the models turn the storm out to sea. so besides rough surf and some rip currents it shouldn't be much of a threat. the american and european model want to bring it close to the outer banks of north carolina so we could see rainy conditions by the middle of the week, but it will be for the dangerous rip currents. looking at high temperatures. about 15 to 20 degrees about average. 80s and 90s for half of the country. cold front moving through parts of south dakota and the middle
