cydney long is joining us. >> reporter: they say they will continue to put their lives on the line to protect our country and the first amendment. this involves the national anthem and it is happening at football stadiums. some say that it's disrespectful to veterans and players when they don't stand up. the image of nfl players kneeling standing arm in arm or with their fists raised during the national anthem is becoming a lasting one. people are signing off about the president versus players controversy, including our military veterans. >> it doesn't offend me. >> reporter: we spoke to a number of retired and active military vets about the nfl player national anthem protest at today's union league

fair. >> i've been in the union for 15 years and i've fought for the freedom that allows them to represent their beliefs and that is if they want to take a knee during the national anthem, i support that. >> reporter: malcolm raised his fist on sunday as others locked arms. >> the narrative has been more about the players or their stances, either right or wrong to do it during the national anthem. >> reporter: jenkins was one of the first players to speak out about social injustice. he spoke with the philadelphia police and has been invited to capitol hill. he said to remember that it's about a better america, nothing to do with the flag. >> this is a way for us to take the lead of that narrative and really point people in the direction of not only what the issues are but what are the solutions that we're working on. >> i am not going to comment on that. >> your liberty stops at the tip of my dues so try not to preach

too much to me. >> reporter: now, at their place of employment, some are asking are football stadiums the right venue for players to kneel or opt out of the national anthem. we'll have more on that conversation when we see you at 6:00. for now, live in south philadelphia, cydney long, nbc 10 news. and the hottest nfl jersey belongs to a player who refused to protest. this is alejandro villanueva. he walked to the field for the national field on sunday while the redskins teammates stayed in the locker room and protest. he's a veteran who served three tours and received several medals for his tours with the army rangers. president trump is praising nascar for not protesting during the national anthem. they were warned about consequences if they protested

and another said, anybody who said they don't stand up for the anthem ought to be out of the country, period. and the president said, "so proud of nascar and its supporters and fans." what's your opinion of athletes who kneel or don't take to the field for the national anthem? you can weigh in on our nbc 10 facebook page. it's free speech. it's offensive or there are bigger issues to talk about. feel free to weigh in there. an alleged declaration of war by donald trump to north korea. at least that's what north korea's foreign minister said today. but the white house is firing back this afternoon saying that is nonsense. nbc 10's erin coleman has more on the breaking news. erin? >> reporter: the war of words continue between north korea and kim jong-un and president trump. right now, it is a case of he said/he said. north korea is saying that the

u.s. has declared war. the u.s. saying that's not true. it started with president trump saying on saturday that north korean leadership wouldn't be around much longer. and the foreign minister said that president trump declared war and said that by declaring war, north korea has a right to shoot down american bombers outside of north korean air space. sarah sanders says that is absurd. >> it's never appropriate for a country to shoot down another country's aircraft when it's over international waters. our goal is still the same. we seek the peaceful denu denuclearization of north korea. >> most analysts agree that if this tough talk is the strategy of the white house, it is a dangerous one. we're live in the breaking news

killing the driver of that bike. the crash happened aroundç 8:00 this morning near country lane in mt. laurel. another bus came to pick up the students. none of the students were hurt. the man seen in this video sucker punching a disabled man pleaded guilty today. he mocked the victim and then punched him outside of a west chester convenience store. to our first alert weather now, summer is just refusing to fade away around here. even. geese are being looking for relief from today's heat. >> i can vaguely make out umbrellas out there but we're at

91 degrees right now. >> crazy. >> you're looking live down broad street in center city, philadelphia, where shade is the name of the game for people looking for relief. first alert meteorologist steve is joining us. >> we'll have a few more days of the high humidity and even more heat, unfortunatelily, if you don't like it. 9 is was the temperature in philadelphia. the record is 92. do we get there or not? i don't think so. we fall shy of that. either way, we sweated it out one more day here with temperatures in the 90s. record highs again just short of low 90s from allentown and down towards reading and wilmington. the second day of 90-degree heat around here.

do we get a third one? i don't think so. the dew point is 68. it was a hot weekend but not terribly humid. that has changed. temperatures right now are at the daytime highs in the lower 90s and here's the temp trend for the next couple of hours. we're looking at a cool down after dark but the humidity will create patchy fog. we'll have to worry about that for the morning commute tomorrow. a look at your weekend forecast in the first alert ten-day forecast next. >> all right, steve, thanks. right now, we're tracking hurricane maria out in the atlantic. people who live in the outer banks are being told to leave while they can. >> there could be a storm surge up to four feet.

meanwhile, in puerto rico, the desperation is growing by the day. take a look at the lines at gas stations this morning. one community is completely cut off after the storm washed away the bridge and just making a phone call, imagine this, one of the biggest issues with people standi standing on the side of the road hoping to find cell service. and leaving puerto rico, that's another battle. hundreds of people have been packing the san juan airport hoping to get a ticket out. the airport is barely functioning with minimal power. people in the lehigh valley are running out of room for the donations. in mexico, search teams are still digging through the rubble with the hopes of finding any survivors left from last week's deadly earthquake. the death toll from that quake is now more than 300. no one's been found alive since wednesday. only 103 schools out of mexico's

9,000 have been cleared to reopen today. police are trying to figure out how an empty kacar ended upn a philadelphia river. a runner found the car at the boat ramp. marine unit was called in. crews pulled it out of the river and no one was inside. the ntsb is investigating after a plane crashed right into someone's yard in montgomery county. pieces of plane are scattered with downed branches. neighbors jumped into action saving the pilot who was choking because his seat belt was around his neck. >> right now, the latest effort by the republican party to repeal obamacare was met with protests during today's hearing.

>> if you can't be in order, get the heck out of here. >> all right. so after that brief chaos, republican senators libd sndsey graham and bill cassidy were grilled. today, they slammed the current health care system. >> i'm here because obamacare is a disaster in my state. it's not your job to take care of south carolina, it's mine. >> if there's one thing we can agree on on a bipartisan basis, obamacare is failing. the problems of obamacare require a path forward. >> so here's a breakdown of the bill. it basically turns over health care control to the states rather than the federal government. medicaid funding would be cut and the states directly get that grant money and would get the option to opt out of many obamacare regulations. a big part of this is the employer mandate. right now it requires companies

to offer coverage. the new bill takes that away. and this afternoon, the ceo of one of the largest hospitals in our area is speaking out against the graham/cassidy bill. >> the ceo of children's hospital of philadelphia said, "the graham/cassidy bill is deaf stating for these kids. if the bill passes, these kids could lose coverage entirely." today the mayor of philadelphia held a press conference opposing the current bill. they said that obamacare helped hundreds of thousands of people in philadelphia and goes beyond just patients. >> the affordable care act has enabled residents for treatment for substance abuse through the medicaid health care program. >> more than 200,000 philadelphians have gained health care coverage through

obamacare. former new york congressman anthony weiner will spend nearly two years in prison for a sexting scandal. this is weiner walking inside the courtroom. he broke down crying telling the judge he was sick and this is his rock bottom. weiner wills have to register as a sex offender. he pleaded guilty in may after sexting a 15-year-old girl. right now the white house is issuing other travel bans against more countries after the original ban expired last night. eight courts are nntries are fa ban. take a look. the original ban stopped immigration from six countries. the new ban removes sudan from that list but now it adds restrictions on immigrants and visitors from chad, north korea and venezuela. venezuela is the first south american country to be included in that ban. the restrictions on the new countries begin october 18th.

a philadelphia civil rights leader and icon will be immortalized. it will be unveiled tomorrow. aside from the civil rights work, he was credited for getting street cars back in 186 p. th cota's memorial is not far from former mayor frank rizzo's statue. one of the ideas was to build an african-american statue near rizzo's. the statue was planned before all of this happened. eagles fans cannot stop talking about the weekend. >> how about a nail biter. wasn't sure they'd get this undid, but they did.

here in the middle and latter part of september? it's this huge dome of high pressure that creates a traffic jam. you've been stuck before. you know what it's like not to move. the heat is trapped in here for now and we'll start to get changes in here by wednesday and into thursday. it's a hot afternoon. lower 90s. we're not seeing any relief under the baking sunshine. the only good news this time of year is the earlier sunset time. it will cool off here later on this evening. the place to be is down at the shore. they are like, what heat? temperatures in the lower to middle 70s from areas like ocean city down to cape may. a gorgeous afternoon under way. temperatures making that slide. we have to wait until after sunset but once it sets, it cools into the 70s. it will be very muggy. that's one thing to take into consideration. phillies game, we don't have much baseball left.

right now at 4:30, thousand of puerto ricans are spending long hours hunting down the basics, power, water and gas. hurricane maria wiped out electricity to the entire island last week and recovery is moving slowly. people are struggling to find cell service. so communication is still limited for people here in our area who want to talk to their families there. today, some in the lehigh valley are rallying to help people in puerto rico. >> jim fisher shows how they are

running out of room to hold the donations that they are getting. >> reporter: here in allentown, a fund-raiser was held to help those struggling right now in puerto rico. they thought they'd get enough donation force a few storage units but they didn't. they got so many that they filled up five storage units and they are having trouble finding somewhere to put it all before it ships out. >> reporter: family members continue to wait by the phone to hear from loved ones. >> today, i haven't heard from any of them. i don't know if they were prepared, if they're going through hard times, i have no clue what happened to them. >> reporter: feeling totally helpless thousands of miles away, mary ortiz put together a fund-raiser to help gather supplies to send down to puerto rico. >> mostly it's water, canned food, personal supplies like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, a lot of diapers.

>> i've had some communication with my daughter and she says this is terrible. everybody is desperate. nobody can help them. >> reporter: in allentown, there's a large hispanic population. ♪ many of them have ties to puerto rico. they have so many supplies, they are having trouble storing it all. >> we need storage. we don't have enough. we need help from the community. >> reporter: laura says it's a good problem to have but one they need to address because they're not finished. >> 2.5 million people in puerto rico. and all puerto rico is devastated. so all of this stuff that we have yesterday is not enough. >> reporter: a close-knit community no matter how close or how far. >> we are united. we care about people not because we're here, we don't care what is happening on the island, we do. that's our people. so we care. >> reporter: jim fisher, nbc 10

currents that we'll be seeing around here for the next couple of days. so meanwhile, we are going to be looking at temperatures that are warm enough that you want to get in the water but you don't really want to do that because it impacts our delaware and new jersey beaches all i way through thursday and probably into friday. so what you can expect here as maria continues to churn offshore, not a good idea to take your small fishing boat out on the water there is some apple picking weather in a bit, guys. the family of a 93-year-old filed a wrongful death lawsuit

against the rehab center where their father lived who died due to extreme heat. the man's 90-year-old wife is still in the hospital in serious condition. hard to believe it's been exactly a month since hurricane harvey hit houston. this is what it looks like in one neighborhood. the sidewalks still piled high with trash and historic floodwaters invaded 40,000 homes across that city. here's a look at some of the other stories we're following county-by-county. we start in chester county. police are looking for the person who shot someone at an apartment in north coventry. police are stressing that this is not a random shooting. the truck crash oil spill is causing big problems in bucks county. crews spent hours cleaning up oil after the truck crashed right into the median on county line road and warrenton. it reopened around noon today

thousands of target employees will soon get a raise. the retail giant announced this morning it is raising its minimum wage from 10 to $11 an hour starting next month. by the end of 2020, that number will increase to $20 an hour. they hope it helps recruit and retain top quality staff. >> can we go back to that walmart thing for a second? that's a lot of trust. >> it is. i almost feel like they'd get too comfortable in the house. >> or, yeah, leave with something. who knows. >> yeah. no. we say no. well, move over, silicon valley, facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg spent the afternoon in our area. >> last night he did what all tourists do in philly, he got a cheesesteak. he posted this on his own facebook page after ordering six sandwiches in south philly. he called the sandwiches best cheesesteak in the land. this morning, we talked with

having so much fun and that translates to the audience, too. it's going to be fun to watch. >> thursday night. >> that's right. kind of interesting to watch these temperatures we're having. >> they are going up and up. let's go to first alert meteorologist steve sosna. yes, we certainly have hot temperatures around here and fell shy of the record high for today, at least the last check. but it's still going to be pretty humid for the next couple of days. you still have to deal with that even as you back away from the 9 ohs. rough surf at the shore. it's a big story throughout the week and everybody is looking forward to this big change coming. you won't need to pump out the ac in your car. you can open up the windows and feel that crisp, refreshing air. certainly not crisp or refreshing for today. a little sweaty outside. 91 was the high so far at philadelphia international airport. the record was 92. we'll see if summer is ending here shortly.

91 in allentown. meanwhile, the shore points had a beautiful breeze and that will continue once again for tomorrow. 26 days at 90 or higher in the month of -- in the year of 2017, i should say. i don't think we're going to add to that count here for the rest of the week. the 90s, good-bye. humidity, a few more days until we get rid of that. it's very sticky outside and with that stickiness in the air, i think patchy areas of fog will form. if you're out tonight bei, look for that. after we lose the sun here, temperatures will cool off this evening and not feeling too bad by tomorrow morning. again, it will be loaded with humidity. extra hairspray as you get ready for tuesday in the suburbs. as we go through the lehigh valley, much the same. there are not huge ranges in temperatures and that's not what you see here. so 80s for the evening hours and

then dropping down into the 60s as we head through the overnight. so tomorrow, another hot one but not quite as hot as today. middle 80s from the suburbs up to the lehigh valley and central new jersey, temperatures in the lower 80s. shore points, again, more humidity to deal with. again, like i said, the next couple of days we'll deal with that humidity. let's look at the ten-day forecast because i've been promising you good weather and now i have to show it. thursday night into friday, crisp, cool, refreshing. bring it on. >> i'm tired of sweating here in the latter half of september. >> jackie and i don't mind the heat because we're not fans of what happens during the winter sometimes. >> right. >> this is true. this could come back and haunt me by wishing the heat good-bye. >> i've been all over the place for the last ten years but it's good to be here with you guys. >> so nice to have you as part of the team. not to put you on the spot. >> oh, boy.
