this time. the president, first lady, vice president pence and his wife took part in a moment of silence at the white house today. earlier the president called the shooting an act of pure evil. he promised to visit las vegas on wednesday. nbc 10 has a team of reporters, including jacqueline london and matt and we're telling the story of this story firsthand and those who have connections to las vegas. let's begin with keith jones who is live with the heartbreaking images. keith? >> it was a scene straight out of a horror story. thousands of concert goers sent scrambling after a gunman opened fire on them. >> an open machine gunfire out

that direction. >> there were so many people running. it was so scary. >> reporter: panic as concert goers run for their lives. >> everyone started stampeding and jumping over fences, getting out. >> reporter: the country music festival as stephen paddock fired from above what sounded like an automatic gun. >> thank you don't see that capacity. >> reporter: shooting victims began to overwhelm the local hospitals even as police continued to search for the attacker. this is from police radio. >> we have sight on the suspect's door. i need everybody in that hallway to be aware of it and get back. >> reporter: police say paddock killed himself as they closed in. police don't know what caused him to kill so many people. those who survived the attack tell us it didn't take long to know exactly what was happening. >> you could hear the gunshots.

>> you couldn't miss it. boom, boom, boom, and then one after the other. we were laying down on the floor. i didn't know to get up, to run, to stay, to duck. i didn't know if it was safe to move because of everything that was going on. it was so scary. >> police have contacted the gunman's girlfriend and they are calling her a person of interest. she's out of the country and is expected to meet with them upon her arrival home. keith jones, nbc 10 news. and news of this tragedy overnight played out like a nightmare for a wilmington mother whose daughter was at that concert in las vegas. >> our coverage continues with tim furlong. he's at the philadelphia airport. this woman's daughter's plane just arrived within the last hour. >> reporter: her name is megan. they heard the pops and when they realized they were gunshots, they broke down fences and flipped over bike racks and used them as ladders to climb

out of the area. let's begin with her very relieved mother down in wi wilmington. >> i was sound asleep and got the call that no parent ever wants. >> reporter: lucy spent the entire night comforting her daughter on the phone. she was right there in the middle of the festival when the shots rang down from the mandalay bay hotel. >> she said, i'm okay. she explained how she ran through the streets of las vegas and into the airport. >> reporter: lucy understands she's one of the parents who is lucky. others got the call that their kids were killed or injured. >> her father and i already texted her and said no more concerts. i don't care if you're 33. she has two children. you have to think about that. it's a shame but you have to think about those things now. >> reporter: megan just arrived

into philly international and is headed home to delaware. she knows how lucky she was to make it out of the concert. >> as we were running out of the fence, it was still going on, like a machine gunshot behind you. it's terrifying to be running backwards, like away from shots right behind you. a a . >> reporter: it still hasn't hit megan yet. the reunion she had at the airport with her husband. and another witness cannot believe what he saw, including moments of amazing profound kindness and generosity in otherwise what was a horrible situation. we'll have that for you at 6:00. live at philly international, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> it will take people a while to process what they went through. more on reaction from the shooter's family, eric paddock spoke outside of his home in florida this morning. he says the family had no

indication that anything like this was coming. nbc 10's investigative reporter mitch flocker is joining us now. what are they saying about a link to paddock's gambling debts. >> well, he had no criminal history but according to casino officials, he was gambling significant amounts of money at the casino in multiple weeks. paddock gambled more than $10,000 a day on multiple occasions. in some cases, those reports show that he gambled more than $30,000. hotel records show that he checked in last thursday. you can see from this map that paddock's hotel was just across from the concert venue. paddock's brother says his family feels like they were hit by an asteroid. >> i mean, it's his fault that he did this but i'd like to know where he found the machine guns,

because that's not something that is easy to come by, i assume. and he's not -- i mean, he has no criminal record. he has nothing, nothing, nothing. i mean, we've been working with the cops since the first thing trying to, you know -- trying to understand. my brother just killed 50-plus people. how does that affect me? i'm a little -- i've got this headache right now, strangely enough. i mean, we're -- our family's huddling together and trying to -- you know, we're trying to make sense of this. >> eric paddock also said as far as he knows his brother had no affiliations to any terror or religious groups but the shooter's father was on the fbi list for bank robbery and for breaking out of prison. authorities have not yet specified the weapons used in the las vegas attack but they found ten guns in his hotel room and even more in his home.

>> a retired las vegas police officer who lives in burlington county has been keeping in touch with his former colleagues who were on the front lines of the massacre overnight. pamela osbourne spoke with the medford man about how the tragedy hit too close to home. >> i'm just in pure shock that i'm sitting here in new jersey being interviewed for something that if i hadn't retired, i would have been a part of. >> reporter: he spent 15 years on the las vegas metro police department. he was one of the first to know that something had gone terribly wrong on the vegas strip. >> i picked the phone up, i look and it's multiple people texting saying this is bad. hey, just want to say, you know, love you, brother. >> reporter: jesse had worked the music festival before, except this time, which should

have been a fun night filled with music and friends, turn food complete terror as a gunman took aim on concert goers from more than 30 floors above. one of the officers he served with is among the dead and he knows another officer who was injured and now he's waiting to hear back from friends and fellow officers who may have been off duty attending the concert last night when those shots started. >> there's quite a few that haven't checked in and i know they listen to music and i'm hoping they are either busy at work or just waking up and getting to work. >> the strip is known as a soft target and something that they have spent hours training for and events like this it's hard to imagine but without that training, the situation could have been even worse.

shoulder. police don't believe that the boy was the intended target. somebody intentionally set a fire in middletown while seven people were inside. everyone got out safely. investigators are trying to figure out what caused this home in burlington county to go up in flames. nbc 10 captured the damage around 2:00 a.m. the trial of the man accused of setting bombs at the jersey shore is under way. jurors are hearing opening statements in the trial of a man who blew up a trash can along the route of a marine charity race in seaside heights. one bomb never went off and the other injured two dozen other

people. o.j. simpson is beginning his parole in nevada after spending nine years behind bars. simpson walked out of bars early on sunday. that was the first day he was eligible to be released. he's expected to meet with the parole officer later this week. simpson has expressed interest in moving back to florida but nevada authorities say he plans to live at home in the vegas area for the foreseeable future. now to the heightening tensions with north korea, china is urging caution as a massive u.s. carrier makes a stop in hong kong. the "uss ronald reagan" pulled in today. they are expected to send the ship to korean waters later this month for an exercise with south korea's navy. the carrier strike group said they would use everything available to convince north korea to halt its nuclear program. facebook gave congress more than 3,000 ads around the time of last year's presidential

election. the ads are linked to a russian advertisement agency. facebook is turning over those ads to congressional committees. the social media giant said last month that it found thousands of ads linked to facebook accounts that likely operated as russia and that the ads pushed divisive, social and political issues during the election. a former medicare official is on the stand today in the corruption trial of senator bob menendez of new jersey. the official testified that menendez was hostile towards him when he called medicare on behalf of a wealthy donor and friend. that donor is a florida eye doctor on trial with menendez. he was involved in a multimillion dollar billing dispute with medicare. menendez is accused of accepting gifts in exchange for political influence. now to the latest on the desperate situation in puerto rico. >> a glimmer of hope as a barge

filled with equipment pulled into port. the items will allow them to make it to remote areas that they haven't made it to yet. while more resources are coming in, people are still struggling. they are waking up early to stand in line for hours and what the stores do have, the supplies are being rationed out. president trump will visit the hurricane-ravaged island tomorrow. >> we are going to be seeing all of the first responders, the military, fema and, frankly, most important, we're going to be seeing the people of puerto rico. >> something else we're seeing for the first time, long lines at western union. people are desperate for cash here. they are having family member who is live elsewhere send them money. >> cydney long spoke with a local truck driver who has been working to help get victims the supplies they need. >> cydney?

>> reporter: just by word of mouth and social media posts, troy green has helped in puerto rico. this is the third tractor-trailer that they plan to fill with hurricane relief supplies since wednesday of next week. they are well on their way to getting those much-needed supplies to the island. what began with items as small as tooth brushes -- >> from local companies to people being in contact with walmart. >> reporter: -- has expanded to generators. troy green's goal to move toiletries, food, water, medical supplies and lumber there. >> people are complaining i lost my 53-foot hatteras or my mercedes. these people are like, i lost my aunt, my grandmother. >> reporter: it's quickly turned into a positive grassroots

effort. >> our goal here is to get whatever is in the area and get it out to those who need it. >> reporter: they already have moved three 50-foot trailers of supplies. >> when it's family members that you see that you know that they have nothing. >> reporter: his entire family lives in puerto rico. he finally learned that his mother was okay yesterday. >> i'm trying to do everything that i can possible. we're going to start clothing drives. we're going to start a nonperishable food drive. >> reporter: he said this relief effort is being done through private donors so items don't get held up at san juan's ports. >> those are temperature-sensitive items in those containers and they are going to go bad. so you have people with life-saving issues that you can't even help. >> a bunch of nobodies came

together to make something happen. >> reporter: and green considers himself no one special but he's doing something very special here by word of mouth. so far, some 100 pallets are on their way to puerto rico and in the water as we speak. he tells me he has friends on the island, trueing truck drivers, those in the medical field and doctors who will be willing to intercept and distribute this once it arrives. we're live in berlin, cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> jersey is sending more help to the hurricane ravaged caribbean. the task force is on a two-week mission to the virgin islands. there were 26 security air forces to leave for the virgin islands. they are recovering after being hit by hurricane maria and irma. they were both category 5 storms when they hit and decimated the islands within two weeks of each

other. we continue to follow the latest developments out of las vegas where authorities are investigating the largest mass shooting in u.s. history. here is what we learned just in the last 15 minutes. police say they got the first 911 call at about 10:08. from that point, it took authorities 1:12 to locate the suspect. one victim is from tennessee and another is from florida. the country music star on stage when the shooting began took to social media hours after the massacre. jason aldean posted on instagram and features a statement that reads in part, "tonight has been beyond horrific. i still don't know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that me and my crew are safe." singer jake owen was on stage just before al dean and describes what he heard and saw. >> it was kind of like, is that gunfire? and then it just got faster and faster, almost like it sountded

like an automatic rifle. you could hear it off the rafters of the stage and then everybody started running everywhere possible. >> members of the country music committee are taking to social media to express their shock and grief. blake shelton tweeted, "my deepest sympathies and prayers to anyone that has been affected. i don't even know why anymore." and let's take a look at one more, from keith urban. "stilled and speechless, our hearts and prayers are with everyone involved and affected." well, philadelphia plays host to many large gatherings. of course, a good number of them are here along the ben franklin parkway. >> we're continually looking at every terror event, every active

a renewed call for action after the shooting in las vegas. >> former arizona congresswoman gabby giffords and her husband stood outside the capitol today and called for sensible gun reform. kelly says america cannot accept these mass shootings as the status quo. giffords called on congress to take action. >> the nation is counting on you. >> we don't have to accept this as normal. it's not normal. it's not inevitable. it's an epidemic that needs to be cured. >> giffords is one of more than a dozen people that was shot in

we're getting new information into the newsroom about the las vegas massacre. >> here's what is new at 4:30. the suspect's brother says the shooter was a multimillionaire real estate investor. at least 58 people are dead and more than 500 are injured when the gunman opened fire on thousands attending a country music festival on the las vegas strip. las vegas police set up a missing persons hotline for people looking to get information about their loved ones. if you're looking for a loved one, the number is on our website, nbc10.com. a nearby hospital ran a training exercise just a few months ago specifically to repair for a mass shooting at an outdoor concert. take a look at this google earth map. it shows the scene of the shooting. you can see the mandalay bay there. the shooter was firing from the 32nd floor and there is the concert venue below across the

street. there were 22,000 people at that concert and the gunman was shooting from two different windows in his room. >> ted greenberg spoke with a former atlantic city casino executive who was on the strip as concert goers were running to safety. >> ted? >> reporter: quite a few people are in our area for a huge gaming industry trade show. now, though, they are stunned and reeling. people were running for their lives when executive virginia mcdo ym mcdowell were held up in a cab at tropicana right next door to the music festival. >> this panicked couple ran up to our cab and said we're taking this cab. i said, we haven't even paid yet. they said, don't worry about it, we're pay for it.

they threw us out of the cab just to throw us in the cab and told the cab driver, take us anywhere. >> reporter: the philadelphia native was one of 22,000 peopin vegas for a conference. >> literally, the walking wounded, many of them carrying severely wounded people into the trop and hooter's next door and just walking around she shellshocked. >> lisa johnson had just driven by minutes before the concert began. she was at dinner at a different hotel when word started to spread. >> the waiter came running in and said there's an active shooter. no one is allowed to go out to the strip. >> reporter: the gaming conference still began today but johnson says it won't normally haves festive atmosphere. >> everybody is just shocked over this. nobody can go on and enjoy

themselves. this is a tragedy unlike any other that we've seen. it's just horrific. >> the city is on lockdown. everyone is horrified. >> reporter: a comedian went live on facebook at the time unable to leave the stratosphere hotel and casino. >> thankful to be okay and i'm just so shocked and blown away by what took place here tonight in vegas. >> reporter: here in atlantic city, there's an increased police presence at every casino in town following the las vegas massacre. ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> eyewitness accounts continue to pour in in the wake of last night's deadly massacre. nbc 10 spoke with a man in a room at the mandalay bay, the same building as that shooter when he heard the gunshots. >> and the next thing you know you hear da, da, da, you thought it was fireworks.

you had no idea what was going on, really. and then you started seeing people run and like scatter everywhere. so we knew it was like panic. >> david golden said s.w.a.t. officers rolled in with guns drawn and told everyone to take cover. golden praised the hotel security in helping keep them safe. so many disturbing images coming from the massacre in las vegas. many people may be having a tough time processing how this could happen. we spoke with a local counselor about how to cope with these feelings. >> it's okay to step back from the news. if it feels like it's too much and everyone is talking about it and it's constant and it is, it's okay to turn off the tv for aç little bit, turn off facebo for a little bit and take a break. it can be overwhelming. >> what about your children? how should you talk to them about tragedies like this? parents can tap the nbc 10 app for more information about how to help young ones cope with the

heartbreaking images coming out of nevada. and nbc's lester holt will hold a one-hour broadcast at 6:30 right after nbc 10 news at 6:00. here are other stories we're following. in montgomery county, putting an end to bullying was a gathering in norristown today. the bill would require every school in the country to have an an anti-bullying program in place. one in three kids between the ages of 12 and 18 will be impacted by bullying. the debate over whether to legalize marijuana for medical use will be discussed and how the state may regulate marijuana. those issues include health and safety as well as insurance

issues. it was legalized for medical use back in 2011. there will be an ordinance that will allow residents to keep chickens at their homes in delaware county. in montgomery county, golfers honored a fallen hero today. the annual brad fox golf tournament occurred this weekend. he served two tours of duty in iraq and was killed. well, doctors have told us that concussions can have lasting impacts on children. >> but there's new concern for young girls who suffered

trauma doctors prepare for every day. nbc 10's steven fisher takes us inside the hospital and found a doctor who used to work in las vegas. he has that part of the story. >> a beautiful night in las vegas ended in tragedy. ♪ the moments the first shots were fired were caught on cell phone video followed by hundreds of concert goers that ran for their lives. >> echfirst responders need to organize and prioritize. >> the goal is to get the most critically injured to the trauma centers and then the victims that are less critically injured

are sent to other hospitals. are they expired, critical, can they wait. so there's a tag system that's used to identify patients that need to be immediately brought to a trauma center. >> doctors say they are constantly looking for the worst and helping. >> we like to think that we're prepared for this type of situation. >> reporter: he says his former colleagues would be working around the clock. >> it's shocking. it's very surreal. it's unimaginable, the amount of patients that they're expected to care for. >> reporter: and because the number of patients was unprecedented, doctors told me that they will use this as a teaching tool, what worked and what didn't work to help in the future. steven fisher, nbc 10 news. >> an unfortunate teaching tool.

in that area. stephen paddock has been identified as the shooter. s.w.a.t. members found him dead inside the 32nd floor of the mandalay hotel where he fired the deadly shots. police say he did this a. >> he fired on 22,000 concert goers that took place across the street from paddock's hotel. more than 50 deaths have been confirmed. we learned the identity of three victims. one is from tennessee, another from florida and police say an off-duty las vegas officer was killed. more than 500 people have been injured and many in critical condition as several las vegas hospitals continue to treat the victims. we're staying on top of every angle. nbc 10 has a team of journalists from the delaware valley to las vegas covering the story. jacqueline
