casinos 16 times in the past few months. officials say federal investigators are examining his finances. >> this was a single guy blo gambled many more hours than anyone you know gambles. >> on september 28th paddock checked into the mapd lay bay hotel carrying 16 suitcases. he also purchased two gun stocks that allow a semiautomatic rifle to fire like an automatic weapon. a gun store owner remembers dock as a repeat customer. >> he was talking how he was new to the area. kind of visiting all the firearm stores in the area. found something on our shelf that he really liked. >> reporter: paddock transferred $100,000 to an account in the philippines. a country his girlfriend has ties to. he did that in the week before the shooting. investigators want to question her.

she's expected to return to the u.s. tomorrow. a source close to the family tells nbc news that the money paddock wired to the philippines is part of a long-term plan to help his girlfriend and her family build a house. tonight i spoke with a country musician who is in the front row of the festival when the shots started to go off. brian hopkins told me he pulled people backstage and put them in a walk in freezer to protect them. >> there were so many people push iing on the fence and pushg weight wise, had he looked at all the guys and said push. and they pushed the fence over and they spilled out. so much weight.

that fence was put up as a barrier to keep harm away. no one imagining that that harm would come from 32 stories up in the mandalay bay. two football fields away from the field. and when i spoke to brian hawkins, he's performing in a concert this thursday called vegas strong. we have seen that hash tag so much on social media as there's such a huge social media presence after something like this. we have seen paris strong, london strong and now vegas strong. as we all are, he's hoping one day a day will come we won't have to hear that phrase ever again. let's continue our coverage back in philadelphia. a memorial is getting ready to start in center city for those lives lost. aaron is there with more.

>> we are outside the municipal services building. it's a who's who of folks out here. the governor showed up. i'm told both of those men will lead this vigil. you can see over here if we can take a look. you can see who i'm talking about. also some city council members. the president is over there talking with the governor. you can see some of the folks just start ing ing to gather ou here. we're hearing all sorts of egs estimates from a couple hundred people to a thousand people. i have seen folks already out here holding the american flag. everybody out here still in disbelief about what happened in las vegas yesterday. they still can't believe so many people were shot. so many people were killed and injured. i had the chance to talk to the executive director a little while ago. she talked about the toll this tragedy takes on everybody. >> it's not just the 59. it's their families, first

mgm for a show when she heard that gunfire. >> it was just total chaos. >> she's dplad to be back home in philadelphia now. the deadly shooting here in las vegas has democratic lawmakers in washington making a renewed push for stricter gun laws. pennsylvania senator bob casey was among the group of senators who spoke out today. >> they are asking congress to take immediate action and expand the background system. tonight we spoke to gun experts about what the shooter may have

done in las vegas to allow him to fire so many bullets so incredibly fast. what the soundç of those gunsh proves about the weapons that is coming up in about ten minutes. and right after this newscast, stay tuned for "nbc nightly news." that's starting at 6:30. for now, let's send it back to the studios in philadelphia for some of the other stories making headlines tonight. >> we'll see you again in a few minutes. in the meantime, we have breaking news in south philadelphia to tell you about. a chemical leak inside a plant here has prompted authorities to shut down parts of columbus boulevard and oregon avenue. hazmat crews are on the scene right now. this is at the ashland chemical plant. no one has been hurt, but people in homes and businesses near columbus and oregon are being told to stay inside with the doors closed and the air-conditioning off. the tank that's leaking has a

device on it that will contain the spill. >> in buck. s county, a 2-year-old boy is dead after he was thrown from a suspect's jeep. the thief crashed that vehicle trying to get away after staeling from a store. that suspect then ran from the crash leaving the boy to die on the road. cydney long is joining us live from that crash scene tonight. what are you learning? >> you can still see the marks out here on bristol pike in the roadway. i want e show you police say it was stolen audio equipment from this walmart store where we're standing that caused the little boy his life. they have the audacity to take off running after the boy was thrown from the vehicle. sky force 10 captured this video of the emergency response. police say the suspect was not being chased after that left, but he blew a red light and struck other two suvs. the toddler boy was thrown from the suv and witnesses say he was

lying in the roadway. police aren't saying if the child was the suspect's own son or if he was buckled into his car seat. they have cost a child his life. it's a tough day for first responders as well. >> officers apprehended him a short distance from the crash. they brought him back and they began life saving measures on the child. >> it's very sad. >> i hope you get what you deserve. >> we can tell you that police just opened up this intersection. this stretch of bristol pike a few minutes ago. we are expected to learn the suspect's name within the hour. he was taken to the hospital to tend to his injuries. we're told he will been right from the hospital to be

arraigned in district court. we're live, cydney long is, nbc 10 news. new video shows president trump tossing paper towels to hurricane vick tims in puerto rico. he stopped at a church and passed out food before e blow throeing out the rolls one by one. president trump has just left puerto rico. his visit there meant to assure people he's committed to helping them recover from the hurricane maria. the president met with the mayor of san juan. he has accused him of not caring enough about puerto rico. the president praised the federal government's response to the storm. >> i hate to tell you, puerto rico, but you're throwing our budget a little out of whack because we spent a lot of money on puerto rico. that's fine. e we saved a lot of lives. >> the president also said that first responders in puerto rico should feel proud that they have kept the death toll from rising. he compared the 16 deaths on

island from this hurricane to the thousands who died because of hurricane katrina. the president's comments comparing the two catastrophes angered a council is woman. >> very frustrated. very angry. his lack of empathy to what is going on in the ground in puerto rico. this was a press conference to make himself feel good. >> the councilwoman said she's continuing local efforts to get supplies to puerto rico, but says it's a difficult and slow process. >> this evening the largest fentanyl bust. 300,000 doses of the deadly drug off the streets.ç a mother lost her son to opioid abuse. there's much more to be done. especially when it comes to treatment programs. >> you need a minimum of 90 days to change a habit. and this 21-day nonsense is like a drop in the bucket.

♪ ♪ i'm jacqueline london live in las vegas. we are hearing more and more stories from survivors of sunday night's shooting. we spoke to a man who is just a few hotel rooms away from that gunman. ben sweeney was on a business strip here in las vegas and checked into a room on the 30th floor of mandalay bay. he was trying to sleep when he heard gunshots. e he says the shooter was two floors above him. he described the loud sound of the gunshots and all the chaos just outside his window. >> i was probably 30 feet away

from this guy killing all these people. all the shots i heard, one in every three probably ended someone's life. i have words to describe it. it's disheartening. >> he shared this picture with us. this is what the concert venue looked like the morkç after th shooting. tonight investigators say they are processing the guns used in the massacre to try to figure out how the shooter may have modified the weapons to make them automatic. that would have allowed him to fire so many bullets so fast. they are saying 600 rounds a minute. nbc 10's george spencer found experts who say our gun laws have not kept up with changing gun technology. >> hundred dollar the crime scene, we're getting our first look inside the the shooter's hotel room. experts say it is the agonizing rattle of sound outside. the sound of rapid gunfire which tells us most about the weapon

stephen paddock used 3. >> listening to the sound of gunfire i was no doubt that was automatic gunfire. >> he retired on saturday. this special agent in charge of philadelphia's atf. his conclusion is notable because automatic firearms are mostly illegal, except for registered collectors. and instead he thinks new technology like accessories and conversion kits transformed paddock's legal guns into rapid fire weapons. >> i believe that the original weapons that were obtained by the shooter were legal semiautomatic rifles and they were converted into fully auto by some fashion. >> andy raymond in maryland says that add on or conversion process is relatively simple. owners end up with a gun that functions almost like an automatic weapon.
