deadly killing spree in las vegas. we have learned this afternoon investigators questioned the shooter's girlfriend. nbc10's jacqueline london is gathering the latest details and joins us live in vegas. >> bring us up to speed. >> reporter: this afternoon president trump met with first responders here in las vegas after sunday's shooting. he praised them for their heroism. the president said first responders showed the world what they can do and the world watched. >> in the depths of horror we will always find hope. in the men and women who risk their lives for ours. the mass murder that took place on sunday night fills america's heart with grief. america is truly a nation in mourning.

iec >> reporter: at least one off-duty las vegas police officer was shot. several other police officers are among to be among the dead and injured. i also spoke to a woman today who is from bucks county. she did not attend the music festival but was in vegas for the chaos. but sunday's events have put things into perspective for her. the little things, she says, just don't matter. >> take the time to hug your family and tell them that you love them. because you never know. you just don't. >> reporter: patti shea says what she is noticing on the streets of las vegas is that people are nicer. they're paying it forward with random acts of kindness and people are starting to look up from their phones, looking

around them and noticing the world around them and the people, she says. it is a good change in the air. a community in central pennsylvania will gather shortly to remember a victim of the attack. bill wolfe was among the 59 people who died sunday. he coached a little league and wrestling in shippensburg. he and his wife were in vegas for their anniversary. his wife was not hurt. a shippensburg church invites members to pray for the family at a service tonight. house democrats calling on republicans to consider stronger gun control measures. they gathered on the steps of the capitol today demanding that new legislation be passed. that legislation would strengthen background checks while creating a committee to study gun violence. >> this is outrage. i think people want sensible, common reforms. we look at the massacres, look at what took place in florida and connecticut.

explosives. nbc10's lauren mayk is live in francona where they've gotten the all clear. >> where did the items come from? >> reporter: a dad in franconia township found them in his son's bedroom. the son is in the military. when the dad got here these items looked real enough that police took them out of the building and placed them on the lawn and they called the montgomery county bomb squad. they looked real, police say. bricks of clay, a bottle and wires, stuff that looked like they could be the makings for explosives. >> it resembled cyntex, which is a plastic explosive that's used in the middle east. >> reporter: a potentially dangerous situation. so law enforcement shut down the road while the bomb squad worked. >> when they got here, they said the items looked as though they were live. so as a precaution we had everyone evacuate from the park and from our township building and the police department

building. >> reporter: tourns oua closer d they were labeled inert and a call to the son overseas confirmed they were training devices. >> i believe he is an explosives technician. >> reporter: police did say the stuff looked real at first which is why it was good to contact them but not to handle it. is this what you want people to do? >> no. if they discover it, all 911, we'll come to their house to get it. because the danger of transporting it from their house to our station could take out the car or worse. >> reporter: the chief says if you find something you think is dangerous they do want to hear from you, but they will come to you and they'll bring the bomb squad with them. live in franconia township, lauren mayk. nbc10 news. new jersey father is charged with murder in his own son's death. the toddler died as his father tried to get away from police in bucks county.

2-year-old kaden wasn't strapped into his car seat when his dad took off after stealing a $228 speaker from walmart. he drove through a red light, flipped the jeep. his son was tossed from the car and witnesses say he ran away and left his son on the ground. >> he was only worried about himself. disgusting human being. >> nbc10 learned he has a lengthy criminal history with multiple arrests in pennsylvania and new jersey. there is still no word how this car overturned in sicklerville. skyforce10 over winslow. the accident happened in a parking lot of a shop rite. no word on the condition of the driver. u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson says he is standing by president trump. tillerson today said he has never considered leaving his post. the announcement follows reports tillerson threatened to quit

over the summer because of growing tensions with the president. according to nbc news tillerson referred to president trump as a quote moron after a meeting at the pentagon in july. the state department is denying tillerson said that. today he declined to address the issue. >> i am not going to deal with petty stuff like that. i mean, this is what i don't understand about washington. again, i am not from this place. but the places i come from, we don't deal with that kind of petty nonsense. >> on sunday president trump dismissed the prospect of talks with north korea as a waste of time. that came a day after secretary tillerson said the u.s. was maintaining open lines of communication with that country's leader. here at home, an unseasonably warm wednesday. feels like, yeah, not so much fall, erin, right? feels like the summer, in fact. >> feels great. >> a live look at the ben franklin bridge.

crystal clear. the poconos. blue sky and a lot of sunshine out there. >> perfect day for rowers on the schuylkill river too. temperatures in the 70s. krystal klei is here with the forecast. >> it's been so nice. i have worked the morning shift for the last few days. in the afternoon a long dog walk has been happening. mid 70s. can't say no to that. through the next few days we have this kind of weather a little bit longer. then things start to change. the warming continuing into tomorrow, and we'll stay dry as well for tomorrow. we'll start to see a bit more cloud cover. some clouds starting to pop up across the region for your thursday. especially your friday. now, we look at the rain potential returning along the northern edge first, but by your weekend we could see showers for the eagles game. so we'll start to see that transition. look at the temperatures. some of us are near 80. 77 in northeast philly.

76 in trenton, philadelphia. 77 in reading and 78 in allentown. these are start to slip tonight. tomorrow even a little warmer. take a look. radar and satellite, still a clear picture. i mentioned, the chance of rain returns soon enough. we'll look more closely at that coming up. while we're talking about the weather today marks two weeks since hurricane maria tore across puerto rico. recovery efforts are under way as the island tries to rebuild, only 7% of puerto rico has power. just 7. the governor says the hurricane killed at least 34 people. it is still a struggle there to find food, water and fuel. a cumberland county woman is preparing to go to puerto rico tomorrow. she is bringing crucial items and her own skills in the medical field. nbc10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg has her story. >> reporter: her beings are full of supplies for those who have no charger. >> 20 hours of solar light.

>> reporter: in maria martinez's heart, a surge of good will to assist people struggling in her native puerto rico in the aftermath of hurricane maria. >> this is a big, big, major thing happening in my town. and i want to be -- at least help a little bit. >> reporter: the 53-year-old physician assistant who lives in upper deerfield township is set to fly to puerto rico tomorrow. final destination, her mountainous hometown where many of her loved ones still live, now without electricity, running water or cell service. >> even though i have heard they're okay, i want to be there with them to make sure that they're okay. >> reporter: martinez says the town's small hospital is not taking any more patients. she plans to help provide medical care at a new clinic being set up in the community. >> even though i am here, my family and my town is right here, you know. and i feel like, one way or

another, i need to be there to help. >> reporter: martinez came to the u.s. mainland in 1989 and served in the navy before embarking on her medical career. she expects to stay in puerto rico until tuesday, but says her return is not set in stone. >> if i see that they need, then i'll stay longer. >> reporter: ted greenberg. nbc10 news. dancing their way to help bring relief during a disaster. pennsauken's algorithm dance studio spent the weekend offering workshops. they raised nearly $6,000. everyone pitched in to pack the dance floor with toiletries, canned food and water. it's an effort the studio says will continue for months. penn state is dealing with another fraternity scandal. the university suspended delta tau delta after a student was found unconscious on the street last week. police suspect the 18-year-old was drinking. they took him to the hospital. he is recovering.

the university is looking at whether students supplied him with alcohol. all paternities at penn state are under a social ban following the at the time of a new jersey student. timothy piazza fell down the stairs after a hazing ritual in february. preventing semi automatic weapons from getting a boost. >> senators announcing a bill to ban the devices. thousands of dollars in water bills. now nbc10 responds helped a local man who was getting nowhere with the water company. the deportation scare that lasted years for a local family and an nbc10 investigator's special report.

with all the talk about keeping undocumented immigrants out of the current nbc10 investigators discovered major delays in our country's immigration courts. an investigation reveals multi-year waits. >> investigative reporter mitch flocker joins us live in the studio. >> reporter: the u.s. immigration court backlog is letting some overstay their visas and threatening to break up legal u.s. citizens' families. in one case an american hero decorated with purple hearts and a bronze star.

turbine turning ever so slowly. >> you sound like me now. nbc10 meteorologist krystal klei joins us. when is it going to feel like fall again? >> you want to wear a scarf and the boots? >> the scarf and the boots for me for sure. >> let's talk about it. so right now it's been very sunny. it's been much warmer than average. that's going to continue a while longer. this is the view over the ben franklin. a bright picture we got. look at the temperatures. you can't complain too much when you got 70s. 76 in philadelphia. 74 in south jersey. lively is at 78. this is our warmest spot to the north. we see it through lancaster county. look a little closer throughout the philadelphia neighborhoods and most of us are in the mid 70s. 76 in andorra. chestnut hill. society hill at 76. it will be a fairly comfortable temperature overnight and tomorrow morning. a light jacket.

even if you skip it, you'll be fine. radar and satellite shows us that we're clear. proteins for t pennsylvania is clear. west virginia, virginia. the showers and cloud line is creeping through ohio and the northwest edge of pennsylvania. this is the cold front. it will start dipping down to the south. and that will provide a little change for the northern edge of our viewing zone particularly as we get to friday. tomorrow's highs are not impacted much. in fact, they're going to go up. 82 degrees in philadelphia. 81, the suburbs and lehigh valley. there will be a southwest wind flow. that transports in warmer air. we're all looking warm, even the shore, at 76 degrees. there will be scattered clouds tomorrow as the front starts to approach the area and provides a little bit of the upper-level moisture that we need for cloud coverage. hour by hour. overnight. patchy fog tomorrow morning. i think we'll be fine. we go to thursday in the 5:00 hour. isolated shower along the northern edge possible, but

really we are looking fairly dry tomorrow. we go into friday morning, 6:00 a.m., and now we see more cloud coverage across the area and isolated showers along the northern edge are possible. most of us stay dry through friday and even saturday. then that starts to change as we get into our sunday. take a look. this is the ten-day on 10 for us. 82 degrees, our temperature for tomorrow. friday isolated chance of shower in philadelphia. we dip a little bit to 79 degrees. at 83 on saturday. and fairly warm for this time of year. but by sunday, we'll have another front move through. with that front comes some tropical moisture possible monday into tuesday. this is an extended period that we may see some rain. look at these temperatures, falling, falling, falling. we go from 78 for your eagles game to the low 70s by next wednesday and there it is, a return to the 60s. there is your fall weather returning. protecting our senior citizens. >> new steps to protect the elderly from falling victim to phone scams.

right now at 5:00, the investigation of the music festival massacre in las vegas takes a new turn as the gunman's girlfriend is questioned by the fbi in los angeles. could she help investigators understand why stephen paddock opened fire on a crowd from his mandalay bay hotel room? and while that investigation progresses, president trump was in las vegas today visiting with survivors of the shooting. >> nbc10's jacqueline london joins us now live from las vegas. a lot of new developments to talk about. >> reporter: there are, erin. we are at the far north end of the las vegas strip. a memorial is to my right. you will see that shortly of the there are other memorials scattered along this entire strip. people just wanting to pay respects any way they can. we can tell you today president trump is headed back to washington now after his visit here to las vegas. the grieving city of vegas. he met with first responders at las vegas metropolitan police headquarters.

many of the officers were at the scene of sunday's shooting. the president saluted them for their bravery. >> the officers were standing up in the line of fire to help those in danger and to find out where those horrible shots were coming from. words cannot describe the bravery that the whole world witnessed on sunday night. >> reporter: prior to visiting the police department, the president stopped by a hospital where many of the shooting victims are being treated. he praised the doctors and staff for their work. today we get our very first glimpse of the arsenal of weapons stephen paddock had stashed inside his mandalay bay hotel room. photos obtained by the dale mail show some of the 23 weapons scattered throughout the suite

including assault rifles on the floor alongside his body. officer say he fitted several video cameras in the hallway so he could watch law enforcement as they approached. that's when investigators say he turned a weapon on himself. as of now, the motive for sunday night's shooting remains a mystery. reporting live from las vegas, jacqueline london, nbc10 news. back to you. >> you mentioned the memorial behind you. it really has become a place for people in las vegas to mourn and pay their respects. what are people saying as they stop by there? >> reporter: people are coming by in tears. they are coming by to pray. a few moments ago we saw a first responder who was here laying down flowers. i spoke to him. he said he was there at the concert that night. he helped rescue people, but he still feels as though he needs to do more. that's why he is here. he told me that a nurse that evening in the hospital said, i believe you have found your

purpose. he says he likely has, but he still feels so empty. and a lot of people say the very same thing. they want the healing to begin, but they know that is not happening today. >> the tourists there in las vegas, they can see it, touch it, and be touched by it directly on that site. jacqueline london live in las vegas. thank you. >> jacqueline london will be back in 30 minutes. again, tonight at 11:00, with updates from las vegas. you can also get news 24/7 on the free nbc10 app. there is another layer to the developing story. investigators say they found a number of bump stocks in paddock's hotel room. those are a device like the ones you see on the screen. that allows semi automatic firearms to oorperate like automatic weapons. today a bill was introduced by california senator dianne feinstein to ban the devices. it's sponsored by all democrat senators from our area with the exception of bob menendez.

stephen fisher spoke to employees at a local gun store about the change. >> reporter: under the recently drafted automatic gunfire prevention act the accessories used to enhance a rifle to fire at nearly fully automatic speed would be banned. >> i think we have reached a tipping point in this country. >> reporter: many agree changes need to be made, but not everyone believes a gun accessory ban is the answer. >> it's this kind of feel-good legislation, knee-jerk reaction. i don't think anything will come of it. >> reporter: target master general manager bill bonnet says what happened in vegas was horrible. >> there is always one person who does something that ruins things for all the people who do things legally and legitimately. >> reporter: he argues it's not the equipment, it's the people who carry out these cruel acts. >> you think, if somebody gets something in their head, they're going to find a way to do something. whether it's with a firearm or

another tool. >> reporter: the target master doesn't carry bump stocks but have ordered them for customers on a rare occasion. he says if the law goes through it won't make a dent on their bottom line. the question is how much good it will do. >> they've tried other things in the past. banning high capacity magazines. banning different features on a gun. it's never stopped anything. >> reporter: bill told me if bump stocks and other equipment get banned they immediately become more valuable and desirable. as for who is in favor of the bill, senators from new jersey, delaware and pennsylvania are all backing this bill. reporting in delaware county, steven fisher, nbc10 news. right now volunteers are hard at work in puerto rico getting supplies to storm survivors who need them. the mayor of san juan caught up with a telemundo crew as she boxed up goods for her residents. >> they come. the volunteers come. they do their own boxes. and then they get it out.

>> there is now a disaster relief center at orlando international airport to help puerto ricans displaced by hurricane maria. it will help people who left puerto rico find jobs, get the benefits they had back home and try to help them find housing. officials say finding places for people to live is the hardest part since the housing market is so tight. for more on the recovery efforts in puerto rico and how to help just top the free nbc10 app. search and rescue efforts in mexico city are over. four weeks after the powerful earthquake rocked the area. the last person known to be trapped alive in the rubble was recovered two weeks after the quake. a crane sat idle after people began breaking down tents that had been used for relatives waiting for news about trapped family members. the death toll has risen to 369. the weather is cooperating

on this wednesday night in philadelphia. look across the river. warm temperatures. just clear skies. >> beautiful day. krystal klei joining us now with what we can expect tonight. >> it has been so nice the last few days. now, we do have well to our north some spotty showers on a realistic sky. you can see this here. none of that is near us. we are dry. clear as can be on the chromosomcamera. 74 in mount holly. the temperatures will fall into the 60s this evening. that's as low as they go. we're not talking 50s or 40s for the overnight lows. doppler radar, no rain or clouds. we have a clear sky across all of our neighborhoods. and it will remain that way even as we go overnight. tomorrow we'll see some scattered clouds and we'll see the temperature warm up. today we were at 76, about five degrees warmer than average. by tomorrow we're talking low 80s. a little wavering friday.

back up saturday and things start to change sunday. we'll talk more about that and your eagles forecast coming up. a look at stories making headlines today. lehigh county, new details about a double murder. allentown police identified the victims as keith minnic and richard vera jr., both shot to death yesterday afternoon. so far there are no arrests. two south jersey schools were closed again today due to air quality concerns. there is a construction project going on at pinelands regional high school and little egg harbor township that involves the removal of asbestos. parents raised concerns about dust in the air at a meeting. the high school and junior high were closed yesterday and today. in middlesex county a school bus driver is suspended after someone posted video of her

enjoy the warm fall air. >> krystal klei joining us with the evening forecast and some rain that is heading our way in the next few days. >> we knew it had to come sooner or later. we are looking at some changes that will come by the weekend. right now, eastern pennsylvania, another beautiful camera shot that we've got. blue skies overhead. not a cloud to track. overnight it will be lovely, temperatures falling into the 60s and that's all. they won't drop to the 50s, 40s, no 30s anywhere. a nice wide view on satellite. clear as can be over us. looking west, you don't see much either in our immediate future. way to the west, slicing through ohio, you see broken showers, clouds. that's a cold front. that will slowly continue chugging to the east here. it will dip this direction. so as it does so, the northern edge of the viewing area will have the chance for isolated showers, particularly on friday. but for most of us we

representative going to won't s effects until the weekend. it's pretty obvious where the warm air is. the cooler air mixing, in the 50s. bismarck. indianapolis and international falls. the cool layer will impact especially the northern edge of the viewing zone as the front tries to move in. again, that's not for a while. a look at the three-day outlook. not bad at all. if you are okay with 80s in october. 82 degrees for us tomorrow in philadelphia. we're looking at some scattered clouds that will build in. a little bit more cloudy friday but not likely to see rain in philly. going with an isolated chance of a shower and a slight dip in the temperature. 79 degrees. back up, though, saturday. 83. that's way warmer than average for this time of year. i am not complaining. that means if you are outside you'll be able to enjoy your outdoor activities. in the suburbs. 81 for us tomorrow. there it is. spotty showers by friday.

76 the temperature. up to 80 by saturday. the lehigh valley is pretty much the same forecast. the dip friday with the front and a little bit of a pickup on your saturday. how about in new jersey. the shore, delaware. going to keep it dry going through friday into saturday. but we'll see more clouds friday. as for tomorrow, 82 in new jersey. 76 at the shore, and 83 for delaware. let's fast forward to the weekend. like i said, another front is going to move in my sunday. that will bring up the chance of scattered showers in philly. 1:00 p.m. for the kickoff. 76 degrees. 77 by 2:30 and by 4:00, 78. winds are light. showers possible. that won't stop anybody from going to the game. they're doing too good. the tropics. we'll have to watch this for the next week or so. these are computer models in the projection of what could form into a tropical system possibly impacting land by sunday near the panhandle of florida.

welcome back. lester holt joins us now. live in las vegas. >> he has a look at what's coming up on tonight's broadcast. hey, lester. >> we'll see the 11 minutes of terror through the eyes of miss here. incredible video of the moments of panic and bravery as well as new video taken from a cab driver as shots rang out. also, how hotel security is already changing and why secretary of state tillerson nearly called it quits and his response to our reporting. >> thank you, lester. turning to nbc10 responds. a local man baffled when he started to receive home water bills for more than thousands of dollars a month. >> the nbc10 viewer was certain he was not using that much water but was hitting a wall when he

tried to explain that to the city. >> reporter: this is the new meter victor martinez thought would solve his water problem. he received a monthly water bill for $1500 earlier this year. >> 6,000, 8,000 gallons a day. >> reporter: what could you possibly do with that much water? >> run a car wash. >> reporter: martinez told the water department there must be a mistake. the normal bill was around $35. in april he asked to have his water meter changed to this one. >> i felt relieved, because i thought, oh, they changed the meter, finally. now we're going to see the real reading, the real charges. >> reporter: the following month, another bill arrived for more than $1500. >> oh, my gosh. i said, what's going on here? how can this be. >> reporter: martinez says he was calling the water department three to five times a month as

another bill arrived. >> they listen over the phone my explanation, but they always tell me there is nothing they can do. >> reporter: that's when he called nbc10 responds. we asked the philadelphia water department to investigate. a spokesperson said prior to changing the meter the bills were in fact accurate and likely caused by a leak that went unaddressed and that leak could have been something as simple as a running toilet. an inspection by the water department after the meter change showed a coding error did take place in the system which caused a billing error for a couple months after the change. that error was corrected and his bill was reduced by some $4,000. >> thank you, nbc10. >> let's check out the recovery counter. we are now at 797,507. knocking on the door of $800,000. >> it's heading up there. head to nbc10.com and fill out
