"early today" starts right now. i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances revera. >> a traffic systems technician was working near the strip and took this disturbing video. a stampede of concertgoers fleeing the concert. the technic bravely wading towards the danger helping the wounded into his truck, and delivering them to medical care. at least 58 people were killed and 500 others injured. at least 317 of them have been released from hospitals. >> police later searched the gunman's car finding 1,600 rounds of ammunition, and 50 pounds of tannerite, a material that can be used to make explosive devices. this comes as a las vegas review journal said the gunman fired bullets at jet fuel tanks on sunday. the fbi said the shooting does not appear to be terror related.

over there! >> reporter: police say they ran into 11 minutes of hell. the las vegas police department releasing a sampling of body cam footage, capturing the intense horror. volley after volley of relentless gunfire. >> get down, get down, get down! >> reporter: bullets hurtling through the air. >> they knew what they were doing. it's also not just a fly by the seat of your pants. it's calculated risk. >> reporter: with officers sweeping onto the killing field, this camera buried under a vest showing one officer shielding a victim lying on the ground. alongside police, paramedics, knowing they, too, could be killed. >> it's very intense. >> reporter: jeff buchanan's team scrambled to put on kevlar. >> they're focused on the patients, and they're also

during the gunfire from this hotel room, many say their officers were wearing body cameras, adding much of the video is still being reviewed. some is too graphic to share. it is a harrowing account of what so many first responders went through. >> miguel, thank you. president trump visited las vegas yesterday meeting with surviving victims of the shooting. he praised the medical team's emergency response and promised support to the survivors. >> i just want to congratulate everybody. it's incredible. incredible what you've done. we met quite a few people. and believe me, they're very lucky to be here. i think the only message i can say is we're with you 100%. i invited a lot of them over to the white house. if you're ever in washington, come over to the oval office. they're all saying, we want to do it. believe it, i'll be there for him. >> ron allen is in las vegas this morning on the strip. ron, there's a makeshift

memorial right there behind you. >> reporter: exactly, frances. we're not far from the mandalay bay. you can see this makeshift memorial that started to form and grow. there's a somber crowd over there, paying their respects to the victims of this horrible massacre. that as we're learning more about the gunman and who he may have been. the police describe stephen paddock who was a deranged individual who had a secret life. they're trying to track down associates to know what he was doing in the days and weeks leading up to this horrific attack. they're not describing anyone else as a person of interest. they want to talk to these people. for the first time that they think he had some kind of help, because of the size of the arsenal that he had assembled. here's some of what they had to say about that. >> it's troublesome that this individual was able to move this amount of gear into a hotel room unassisted. it's troublesome for the amount

of stuff he had at both residents, unassisted. so there's people that know this individual. there's people that could help us understand this individual. >> reporter: we also want to show you the pictures of the somber scene today, a funeral cortez for an off-duty vegas officer killed at the concert. a scene that's going to be repeated, funerals, of course, in the coming days, here, and in cities across the country where other concertgoers who were mowed down came from. >> one by one, we'll be hearing about those funerals. this morning, a las vegas resorts are beginning their slow return to normalcy, as shows and attractions opened up with added security. jolene kent has details from the strip. >> reporter: major new security measures deployed in las vegas, days after the mass shooting from a hotel room window. law enforcement stepping up security outside of hotels. and inside at the wynn and

encore, beyond the security cameras, hand-held metal detectors for guests and staff. k-9 units scouring the strip and searching hotel rooms for possible threats. this trip is different. >> last night we had to go through metal de tech torsion, which was the first time we've had to do that. >> reporter: keeping hotels safe while maintaining ambience and privacy for 43 million visitors. >> we're observing everyone coming into our property. we're doing bag checks. we don't want to push visitors away but we want to make sure everyone's safe. >> reporter: it's impossible to fully guarantee the safety of las vegas or any city. with thousands of rooms and balconies overlooking popular public spaces. >> do we want to tie down everybody's freedom, because we have a piece of garbage like this thing? i don't think so. >> reporter: but hotels and cities can do more. >> possibly put sensors in the

developing overnight, three u.s. army special forces have been killed and two others injured in a suspected ambush attack in nijar. it was first reported by "the new york times," and u.s. military officials confirm the deaths to nbc news. the soldiers were ambushed by possible islamic extremists about 120 miles north of the capital. chapman, what else do we know? >> reporter: well, phillip, that's right. we know three u.s. special forces soldiers were killed and two others wounded in the attack in anijar. it's understood the patrol came under hostile fire. there's no confirmation who carried out the attack.
