developments. let's start with the bomb plot. >> some of this information coming into the newsroom in the last hour. a federal official says they are looking into the shooter was planning additional attacks including a car bombing. authorities previously said paddock had 1600 rounds of ammunition in his car along with fertilizer that can be used to make explosives. we have also learned paddock may have scoped out other music festivals including others in las vegas. they also say he researched hotels around boston's fenway park. and late this afternoon we learned some of what paddock's girlfriend told the fbi. she would lie in bed moaning and screaming, oh my god, that's according to two former fbi officials. investigators believe paddock may have been in physical or

mental anguish, but so far the fbi has not identified a motive for what may have led him to kill 58 people and wound nearly 500 at that music festival in las vegas sunday night. live in the breaking news center, keith jones, nbc 10 news. the national rifle association says he's hoping regulations on a gun accessory in the wake of the massacre. in a rare move the nra is calling for a federal review of bump stocks. these devices should be subject to additional regulations. a bump stock can be added to a semi automatic weapon to make the gunfire much faster. the shooter had 12 bump stocks inside his hotel room. today the white house said president trump supports having the conversation in congress over the bump stocks. >> we certainly welcome that. would like to be part of that conversation. wi would like to see input from policymakers.

>> a bill introduced by democrats yesterday would ban the devices and in the house, pennsylvania republican congressman says being able to purchase one is, quote, a loophole that needs to be closed. will congress pass a ban on these devices? "nbc nightly news" is asking where they stand. that's coming up right after this newscast. right now at 6:00, a possible motive emerging after a husband and wife were shot in the lehigh valley. the suspect forced police into a standoff which ended with his surrender earlier today. steven fisher has been following this story all day for us. he's joining us live from bethlehem. we have learned the suspect is related to those victims. >> reporter: the suspect and victim did know each other. today we are learning about how this all start ed. police believe it may have

started because of an ongoing dispute over money. sky force 10 is there when they had guns drawn on 61-year-old john hand who was found sitting in his truck was present at the shooting and standoff. >> i got to admit. i was scared. i wasç by myself. i was the only one home. >> three hours after the standoff started, he surrendered to police. here he is being escorted into the state police barracks with his arrest three schools including freedom high school lifted their lockdown giving parents a chance to reunite with kids. >> he's accused of injuring his wife inside their home on long anchor drive. they told police armed with a handgun was aiming for a husband which she was shot three times. >> it's scary and it's happening in my own neighborhood.

my own school. >> after getting shot three times, we're told it was melinda able to call police for help. the good news here is melinda is expected to survive. reporting live, steven fisher, nbc 10 news. now to a shake up in pennsylvania politics. a pro-life republican congressman from the pittsburgh area is resigning now. amid-reports he asked his mistress to get an abortion. he will step down on october 21st. this afternoon's announcement comes after a newspaper published text messages saying he asked his mistress to get an abortion. murphy has been a strong critic of abortion. >> sunny and dry day here in wilmington along the river front. people enjoying the warm start to fall. the dry weather is going to end for some neighborhoods as soon as this evening. we're tracking showers on the

radar right there. let's bring in meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz and he can time out the showers for us. >> not everybody is going to see rain during the evening. but it's certainly getting kind of threatening looking. we have overcast skies in philadelphia. farther the north and east we have an overcast it's moving to the east. that means that lehigh value is the target. berks county, northern chester, bucks, montgomery targets. but farther to the south, it's likely to stay dry during the evening hours. this is just a fairly small system that is moving through. you'll see this on the futurecast hour by hour. here we are in lehigh valley. upper bucks, that moves through. and then we quiet down during the night tonight.

still warm out there. 80 in northeast philly. we got up to 82 degrees today. the average high is 70. and we're not to drop much e below that during the night tonight. cloudy skies in philadelphia. we have the threat of showers and suburbs and even threat of thunderstorms up toward the lehigh valley. but farther to the south, it's just generally on the cloudy side. that's why we do this weather stuff. more about threats of rain over the weekend and also the latest tropical storm that could be affecting us next week. tuition breaks could be in jeopardy for some students at pennsylvania colleges. that's because a funding fight in the state capitol is tying up money which allows some schools to give tuition discounts to in-state students. nbc's aundrea cline-thomas explains what it could mean for you. >> the university of pennsylvania has the only veterinary program in the state.

planned and representatives won't return for nearly two weeks. aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. >> new jersey's suing a painkiller company for what it calls nothing short of evil today the state attorney general filed a lawsuit against an arizona drug company. the suit alleges the company tried to have doctors describe a powerful painkiller spray for any type of chronic pain, but that drug was only approved for cancer patients. its marketing was appropriate. take a good look at this picture. this man was sitting in a car outside the hospital when he flashed a gun at someone walking by. that person contacted police who put together this sketch. if you know this, you're asked to call police. he was trusted to teach a young intern but used his position to take advantage of a teen. kenneth mason, the two were working for chester county hospital in august when scheduled for an overnight ride

along. the teen told police he had fallen asleep and woke up to mason touching him. mason has not been arrested. he's been charged with sgheern charges and denies anything happened. the fed's are suing a south jersey real estate firm over the firing of pregnant employees. the lawsuit says freedman realty group dismissed three employees because of their pregnancy. according to the suit, one supervisor told a pregnant worker that women, quote, get stupid when they are expecting and having children is gross. the company denies those allegations. now for the crisis in puerto rico, they are making progress distributing aid across the island. 80% of gas stations are now open. more than 70% of supermarkets are back in business. but still slow progress being made at restoring cell phone service, electricity and safe drinking water. but relief is on its way to puerto rico from south jersey. this morning sky force 10 flew

>> lunchtime customers finding aj's cafe shut down by authorities. after gal way township police. snapped pictures of birds standing on a plate and a litter box under the sink all in the restaurant's kitchen. >> it's pretty disgusting. >> it should not happen. there's no excuse for it. >> police say they were looking for the restaurant's owner for an unrelated matter on friday when they spotted the pets in the same area where food was being prepared. health officials cited the cafe for unsanitary conditions after being alerted by police. >> this is something that i have never seen. i worked in the restaurant business for. >> a statement on the restaurant's facebook page issued before authorities released these photos says the animals were completely separated from prep areas and at no time was food safety compromised. >> that was more concerning that he wasn't being reputable or

weekend. you see them popping up the radar. let's bring in meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz who can give us the details. >> we have a couple threats of some showers before the main event comes early next week. that is tropical moisture coming up here. cloudy skies now in philadelphia. we're in the upper 70s across much of the area. and we have gotten into the 80s over much of the area. not so much at the jersey shore. the temperature is 82 degrees for the high today. the average high is 0. and here we go all the way through the weekend. looks like we're going to be near or above 80 degrees. shoirs getting a little closer. almost into berks county now. some of that is on the heavier

side. you can see how small that area is. and so that moves through and then that's it. and here we are at 8:00. up through the lehigh value low, maybe a linger shower in philadelphia. no rain expected in delaware or south jersey. and then as we go into tomorrow, we're still looking pretty dry. we have had 16 days in a row by no measurable rain in philadelphia. saturday, that's looking generally dry too. as we go into saturday night and sunday. the threat of showers increases. this is not heavy rain that we're expecting, but at least some scattered showers around and that does include the eagles game. close to 80 degrees in much of

the rest of the area. even avalon at 80 degrees. dover, delaware, 83 degrees. for the eagles, it's especially for football weather. and then a chance of showers as we go through the game. these are just scattered showers. we're not expecting it to be a washout. we're not expecting especially heavy rain. but we got that lingering threat. now this is some heavy rain. this is nate, but the center is over and that's why it doesn't look well organized. but as it moves over into the western caribbean, that's some of the warmest water in the world. so the computer models do take it into the gulf of mexico. there's no doubt about it. it's going to hit the united states. just a question of the intensity. and then the remnants of that comes right up our way as we go

nbc sports philadelphia with you once again. a few more weeks the sixers regular season opener. we're getting good news from one of their top starts. joel embiid has been cleared to play in five on five full court scrimmages for the first time since his injury last year. but there's a chance he could see some action during the preseason as well. here's his reaction after getting the news. >> this is how i did it. i knew there was a chance. we have a goal. >> from the the hardwood to pig skin, the eagles back home to host the cardinals. over the last few weeks the offense has relied more on the running back and it's paid off with two straight victories against the giants and chargers.
