garage records show when his car left the garage, someone used his key card. a chicago hotel manager says paddock became forceful and demanded a room with a view of the lalapalooza festival last august. the windows from which stephen paddock opened fire on thousands of concert goers are being repaired. today workers replaced the shattered gold glass of two windows on the 32nd floor. the room paddock booked was a large suite with uninterrupted views of the vegas strip. 58 white crosses line the road below the city's iconic welcome sign. a man from chicago brought them to las vegas to honor the victims who died. he did the same thing after mass murders in new town, connecticut, and orlando. australian police are helping in the investigation into paddock's girlfriend. she became an australian citizen

nothing threatening back to the west. i expect dry weather during the night. the temperature will not be dropping a whole lot. it's humid for this time of the year as well. and you see by morning, temperatures are well up into the 60s. that's a warm start to the day. and we're going to end up with a warm finish, too. we're continuing to watch nate down in the western caribbean. that's the yucatan peninsula. it may be strengthening and we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. it is going to be affecting our weather, too. thank you. within the past 20 minutes, vice president mike pence took a helicopter tour of the virgin islands. >> he described the damage as overwhelming from hurricane maria. during the tour, pence saw splintered boats along the coast, blue tarps on damaged homes and uprooted tree and power lines. the vice president attended a briefing on recovery efforts at an army national guard hangar,

he told reporters that america will be with the virgin islands until they're completely restored. areas cut off from food and water in puerto rico are finally receiving supplies. police hand delivered the items to towns detectivastated by mar. it's 50 miles from san juan and was designated as one of the areas in dire need of help. 93% of the island still has no electricity. water service has been restored to about half of customers. one of the streets of san juan, hundreds of police officers there have been deployed to direct drivers around. the power outages have introduced new levels of congestion as a steady stream of commuters return to the island to help with relief efforts. the government hopes to have the power back on within a month and within the entire territory by march. despite many donation drives, there's been a problem

getting items to residents on the island. today, a high school collected donation and offered a guarantee. one of the women who works at the school has family on the island who can help. >> i have family members that own trucks and they could go in and out of the port. >> she told us because supplies are so limited, her family is trying to get by with only six bottles of water a day. to a controversial decision from the white house on birth control, today the trump administration is allowing more employers to opt out of providing no cost birth control to women for religious and moral reasons. the new regulations take effect immediately. this reverses an obamacare administration policy which required most companies to provide birth control as preventative care for women. the department of health and human services says today's charges only affect .1% of women in the u.s. nbc 10's aundrea cline-thomas is

looking into what this means. she'll have more ahead at 4:30. and the country is waiting to find out what the president meant last night when he said it might be the quote, calm before the storm. the president delivered that vague message to reporters during a photo op with senior military leaders. >> you guys know what this represents, maybe it's the calm before the storm. >> what's the storm? >> it could be, the calm before the storm. >> in a closed door meet ing with military leaders the president talked about challenges with north korea and iran. president trump remains confident in secretary of state rex tillerson. sarah huckabee sanders said those comments were made moments ago. it follows an nbc news report which claimed the president was furious after tillerson reportedly called him a quote, moron in july. on wednesday, tillerson said he never considered resigning.

>> god bless you and god bless the united states of america. >> today's hispanic heritage month took center stage at the white house. president trump said quote, no matter who we are or where we come from we're all americans. the president also talked about the devastation in puerto rico and what he saw there earlier this week. in south jersey, hispanic members of new jersey's legal community were honored today. the camden county judge who organized the event says it's important to celebrate diversity in the court. in montgomery county a police investigation is underway at a daycare. officials say a classroom aide at the catholic early childhood center was placed on administrative leave last week. a letter went home to parents stating action was taken following an alleged incident at the school, which is located at st. matthew's catholic church.

officials noted in the later the aide obtained appropriate background checks. at this point no charges have been filed. an early morning fire in point breeze caused damage to a building that used to house a church. that vacant building on reed street once housed the mercy street tabernacle baptist church. investigators don't have a cause and no one was hurt. two south jersey schools were closed again today because of air quality concerns. there's a construction project going on at pinelands high school. it involves the removal of asbestos. the schools have been closed all week. environmental testing is underway. do you remember that lawsuit filed against several tgi fridays for price gouging? the state supreme court has ruled the lawsuit can't proceed as a class action. a woman in mount laurel sued

after she claims she was charged a higher price at the table. a lower court granted class action status to anyone who ordered drinks from 2004 to 2014. despite the reversal, individual complaints can proceed. nfl start cam newton is apologizing for a remark he made to a female reporter during a news conference earlier this week. she asked about the play of one of his teammates and here's how he responded. >> it's funny to hear a female talk about routes. like. funny. >> last night, the carolina panthers' quarterback took to social media to apologize. he posted a nearly two minute videos urging others to learn from his mistake. >> i've learned a valuable lesson from this. and to the young people who see

its kind in the state to implement a new policy for the treatment of prisoners who are transgender. >> who know there is finally a bill in place that adds a layer of protection for us that states out the sheriff's department has to respect us and our names. it's absolutely amazing for our community. >> the policy insures transgender individuals are treated with dignity. the directive covers interaction between the sheriff's department and men and women who are transgendered during an arrest when they're in custody and when they're housed in jail. it also covers transporting preand post operative transgender people. a world famous musician left a lasting impression on students. pianist lang lang visited thomas home elementary school. two other schools are getting a classroom like this. through lang lang's foundation

the schools will enjoy a state of the art piano lab, music related field trips and piano lessons. it will be amazing. next week is the beginning of fire prevention week. mayor jim kenny was at the museum in south philadelphia. a one million dollars grant from fema will allow the fire department to purchase and install smoke alarms in the community and the mine will be used to buy adaptive alarms for residents who are deaf, hard of hearing or blind. the city of bethlehem is called the christmas city. the search is underway for the perfect tree. one has to be 40 to 50 feet tall, the other about 18 to 25 feet tall. the city will send out a scout to check out any prospects. and a spotlight will shine on both trees during the annual christmas tree lighting ceremony in november. people living along alabama's gulf coast are preparing for tropical storm nate.

the storm is expected to pack powerful winds and rain as it hits the state shore line early sunday. residents in the path of the storm have spent the last couple of days tying down everything from patio furniture to boats in preparation for the storm's strong winds. we could feel those effects of nate nexwet week. >> what happened to fall? >> it's been delayed a little bit. you'll find it later next week. it's not going to be 80 by the end of next week, that's for sure. 80 in philadelphia right now. despite a lot of clouds and close to 80 across much of the rest of the area. you can see the clouds out there. but we don't have any rain across the region let's check out some of the temperatures in the suburbs, the chester, bucks, montgomery counties, coatesville at 77. west bradford township at 87. chester springs, chad's ford 78.

wearington 78. 80 in new hope. one of the warm spots. and here we are, the average high, 70. and nowhere near that four days in a row. we've had quite a streak of dry weather, too. we need some rain. and we're going to get more than our share of it by early next week. certainly not getting it in the next few hours. nothing on radar close by, despite the clouds. a couple little sprinkles in western pennsylvania. that's not very impressive either. as we go through the futurecast, go through tonight and tomorrow, we see clouds from time to time. no rainfall at all. saturday looks like the nicest day of the weekend. and, again, with temperatures in the 80s, it's going to feel and look like summer. but as we go into sunday, we've got moisture moving in. not necessarily the tropical moisture from nate, but there could be enough to produce some showers, some in the morning and

maybe some later in the day. now, the later we go in the day, and into sunday night, that's when some of that nate moisture will influence us. this model is showing us, suggesting thunderstorms by sunday night. and then the steadier heavier rain coming in on monday. so we're likely to get at least an inch of rain in most of the area by the time this is over with. and a lot of it is soaking rain, the kind of rain that you really need at this time of the year. no rain tomorrow, look at these temperatures. chestnut hill, langhorn, 83. 83 in reading. 82 in allentown. and easton. again, we're not seeing any of those raindrops. cooler right at the beaches because of the sea breeze. 78 in avalon. 66 in longport. 83 in dover. for the eagles, there is a

"hurricane" schwartz. >> because the calendar says it's fall but it doesn't feel that way. >> exactly. not even close. it feels like summer out there. we even have clouds that have come across the area. no shower threats, but that hasn't stopped the temperature from going up. and the average high, 70 for this time of year. yesterday 82, today we'll be 82 for the high. tomorrow, maybe even a degree or two higher. and then sunday, it's just a question of the shower timing. but right now, we're already 80 degrees across a good bit of the area, mount holly and trenton all at 80. dover at 83 degrees. even wildwood at 79. so it is kind of mild everywhere, poconos, 72 degrees. that's way above average. we don't have anything on radar close by, so don't worry about those clouds threatening anything. a couple of sprinkles in western

some breaking news from the big apple. federal authorities have uncovered a plot to attack large public gatherings in new york city. they arrested a canadian man over the summer who spoke about wanting to strike times square, concert venues and crowded subways during rush hour. investigators say the goal of the isis inspired plot was to injury as many people as possible, but the suspect was, again, arrested before obtaining any weapons. switching gears, nbc 10 in new jersey today. a sea of strangers gave back to

a woman who has given so much to her community. that group showed up to jacqueline dixon's home this morning for a major makeover. >> and as you're about to see, jacqueline is more than deserving. >> reporter: on a warm fall day, an army of volunteers set out on a mission. >> replacing doors, cleaning up the yard. making it comfortable for her. >> reporter: to transform jacqueline dixon's home. >> complete makeover. there are a lot of weeds and leaves all around. they are taking care of all that. >> reporter: the gold star mom knows about taking care of others. she runs a facility in berlin which helps local veterans transition to civilian life. it's named after her son anthony, a soldier who joined the army after 9/11. >> he wanted to do something to help our country so that the war wouldn't come over here. >> reporter: but anthony never came home. he was killed in iraq in 2004. >> i give to the veterans because i know that if my son

hurricane destruction. student beatdown. what sparked this violence inside a school cafeteria. right now at 5:00, the crisis in puerto rico. vice president mike pence touched down on the island late this afternoon, assessing the destruction and thanking first responders. many people there are still in the dark weeks after hurricane maria ripped through. good evening, i'm keith jones. >> many who live outside the capital of san juan still have no power, water and cell service. >> some have criticized president trump for only visiting an upscale portion of puerto rico. >> new jersey state troopers are willing to go wherever on the island they're needed. nbc 10's reporter cydney long was with those 48 troopers.

>> reporter: in hamilton, 50 troopers from all over the state get their marching orders. >> i want you to be safe. >> reporter: they have their bags packed and will depart jfk bound for san juan. it's the first major deployment for this officer. >> we don't go what we're walking into. >> reporter: the mission is twofold, to provide help with broken roads and powerless traffic signals. >> serving on traffic posts as well as security for both gasoline stations and food and water distribution points. >> reporter: they will assist state and local police and work with fema to provide security. some in this deployment are missing birthdays and other special occasions without a blink. >> i told them daddy is going down there to help and provide what we can to make people's lives better. >> reporter: this lieutenant's father-in-law lives in puerto rico.
