california is under a state of emergency this morning as vast swaths of the state are consumed by deadly wildfires. more than a dozen blazes have swept through killing at least ten people and injuring more than 100 others. the danger is statewide burning from the los angeles area all the way up to wine country in the north. there the fires have destroyed 1500 homes and businesses forcing tens of thousands of people to flee and leaving more than 100,000 without power. threatened by these massive wildfires at least two hospitals had to evacuate their patients, transferring them safely to other facilities. and the california highway patrol took to the skies conducting helicopter rescues, saving at least 44 people from the flames. >> well, these new fires started suddenly sunday night ander charged by powerful hot winds sometimes called los diablos or the devil winds creating critical fire conditions. >> the fire has done a good amount of magnitude of damage.

and we are still working with putting our damage assessment teams together and getting them out to accurately document the amount of damage that we have. >> trying to prevent further damage, thousands of fire fighters are battling these extreme blazes, but for many the destruction has already reached catastrophic levels. and here is what one santa rosa neighborhood looked like before the fires and here's what it looks like now, scorched beyond any recognition. homes are left in smoldering piles of ashes, vehicles melted in a charred heaps. neighborhoods completely destroyed and residents stunned at the devastation. >> this is like apocalyptic, it seems. this is so out of the norm, like i'm from southern california and everything is dry out there and i'm used to fires, but i've never seen anything like this in an urban area. >> nbc meteorologist bonnie snyder is with us this morning. bonnie, tell us more about how the winds here can really impact these fires and where it goes. >> it's really incredible when you look at it from outer space. this ghost satellite picture shows we were able to see the

smoke from far out. there is still a red-flag warning and this is going to go into effect for today for southern california. northern california getting a little bit better weather today. though we are still watching a front that could bring shift in winds by wednesday. so, something to keep watch on very closely as we move forward. philip, frances? >> all right, thanks, bonnie. now let's turn to my colleague gadi schwartz in california where the wildfire there is scorching through homes. gadi? >> reporter: let me show you what's going on. check this out. these are fire fighters that are putting out hot spots in this home and they were protecting this home over here. in this neighborhood it is house after house that has already gone up in flames. from above you can see it is house after house that has been destroyed by this fire. very different fire than the one that is burning up north because these homes are so close to each other and the wind is so strong that it is traveling from house to house, neighborhood to neighborhood at lightning speed and this is something that you can see from all across southern california.

you can see the smoke cloud from disney land. you can see the smoke cloud from the ballpark, from the traffic snarled all the way around here, a very stark reminder this is the type of danger people live with every day here in southern california. >> incredible images. gadi, thank you. >> in texas tech, police officer was shot and killed monday night allegedly by a student placing the campus on a lockdown for over an hour. the university spokesman said officers were conducting a student welfare check when they found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the suspect's room. they brought 19-year-old hollis a. daniels into police headquarters for a standard debriefing. that's when police say he pulled out a gun and fatally shot the unidentified officer in the head. >> the freshman fled on foot and a chasten sued placing the university on lockdown as the school enurged those on campus to shelter in place on twitter. the university later issued an all-clear in the twitter update after texas tech police apprehended daniels near the jones at&t stadium and took him into custody. >> texas governor greg abbott

thing about this twitter feud is the fact it could have an impact on policy on your wallet, on taxes, on the budget that republicans want to get started on next week. in the washington post, one polster describes it as a slow-motion break up with the republican party that the president seems to be speeding up according to that. that's patrick, veteran polster who has worked with steve bannon. now, speaking of bannon, former white house chief strategist, he has said that he wants to target many republicans in this upcoming election, but is specifically talking about this feud between president trump and bob corker. he thinks corker needs to back off. listen. >> these people have no respect for the working men and women in the united states. i tell you what, senator corker is an absolute disgrace. if bob corker has any honor, any decency, he should resign immediately. he should not let those words stand what he said about the president of the united states.

>> reporter: she got in trouble for that? >> um, yeah. one time i think i was around 7 or 8 she actually made me do a drug deal for her. >> reporter: a drug deal? like what did she ask you to do? >> she put some either heroin or cocaine in a napkin or something. she said run up to that house, get the money and give this to them. >> reporter: tori said she never got any health care growing up. >> none until i was ten. i had never been to the dentist before. >> reporter: what about pediatrician doctor? >> no. >> reporter: no? >> nothing. >> reporter: her mom told tori not to tell anyone about the things she saw in her home. tori would call her grandparents when they ran out of food. three years ago lilian and richard were awarded custody. >> when she first came to live with us permanently, she was blaming herself. maybe if i was better, mom wouldn't have done the drugs. >> reporter: and it wasn't just tori's mom abusing heroin in her h home. it was her uncle the closest

father figure. what happened to your uncle? >> he passed away november 20, 2015 from a drug overdose. >> reporter: heroin? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: that must have been super hard for you. >> yeah, because -- i mean he basically took care of me i understand stead of my mom. if my mom was asleep he'd take care of me and say it was just -- it was sad. >> reporter: hang on. you want a kleenex? i have one. >> i have one over here. >> reporter: come here. this is really hard stuff to talk about. at 14 years old, tori has seen enough pain for a lifetime, making her spirit and attitude today all the more impressive. here's a big question. why are you talking to us? >> because i want to spread awareness on how drugs have not only affected my life, but has probably affected a lot of other kids' lives. and i want to just like help
