good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." thank you for joining us on a tuesday morning. what a serious situation in california. >> we're going to talk about the wildfires consuming property out there. two dozen in all. most in northerncalifornia. they're being blamed for 11 deaths. that number is expected to increase. >> among the 1,500 homes and businesses that have been destr destroyed, several wineries in is snon mow and napa counties. joe fryer is with us from santa ro rosa, one of the towns under siege this morning. >> smoke fills the air. neighborhood after neighborhood evacuated. here in santa rosa, the fire, 0% containment. eventually hundreds of families will return to see their homes

destroyed, devastated by wildfires that are raging through california's wine country. >> this is my neighborhood. in flames. >> reporter: there was little time to flee as fast-moving flames in california, fueled by dry cans and wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour. >> it was horrible. i couldn't stay. i couldn't breathe. >> reporter: across northern california, thousands were under evacuation orders, including two hospitals. 1 of them moved 130 patients. the most critical, still hooked up to vital machines as they were rushed through dense smoke. dozens of others seconds. >> reporter: many more were threatened. >> it was nervous and scary. everything we worked hard for is in this home. the thought of losing it is terrifying. >> reporter: a of year when the fire risk is particularly

high, with parched their growth. by fi but fires, still burns everywhere. it will take a while to get them under control. we're joined by cal fire deputy chief scott mcclain. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> i'm sure you heard what joe was telling us. 15 separate fires, 70,000 acres. the winds are coming down. when do you think you can make a deb dent in these fires? when do you start to get them under control? >> each day, we're making progress. as you can imagine. you can see the smoke lay year that's over this devastation. this is a small snapshot of what's taking place. resources continue to pour into this area, as well as different areas within the state, to mitigate the situations. hopefully we'll see turnaround throughout the course of today, and into tomorrow. >> chief, i know it's fire season. i mean, this is the time of year when fires are a real risk. but these seemed to come on so

fast. was that your experience? >> right. this month and last month are historically the worst two months in the state of california for fire seasons. the most devastating, as we're witnessing here today. yes. this has happened before. 2008. 2003. 2007 just for examples. >> all these people being evacuated, chief, 23,000 people by our numbers. where are they going? >> you can imagine the well, for people and their pets. >> is there any idea what may have caused this particular fire? >> no. right now our investigators are investigating this fire, as well as 15 other fires in the state of california. it's a meticulous process. it does take time. we want to make sure we get the facts. >> deputy chief scott mclean.

wildfires. we'll have to be careful to watch. we could see an explosive regeneration of these fires. guys? >> all right, al. we're check with you in a little while. a major story. trump speaking out in a new interview. what he has to say could strain a tense relationship with the secretary of state rex tillerson. >> reporter: this should make for an interesting conversation today, the president set to host rex tillerson, as well as his defense secretary, james mattis, for lunch at the white house. this comes after the latest counterpunch. this time, whose jab at tillerson is impossible to hide. president trump taking a dig at his secretary of state. in "forbes" magazine, out today, responding to nbc news' exclusive reporting that rex tillerson described the president as a moron last summer. i think it's fake news, mr. trump says, but if he did that, we'll have to compare i.q.

this morning, new information about the minutes leading up to the las vegas shooting. the sheriff now says six minutes before stephen paddock unleashed his fury of gunfire on to concertgoers, he fired 200 rounds at a hotel security gourd, through his closed hotel room door. at 9:59 p.m., the suspecting gourd responded to an alarm set up by an open door on the 32nd floof of mandalay bay. the guard is shot in the leg but survives, alerting others of the gunman's location. >> on being injured, notified security of his situation. >> reporter: at 10:05 p.m., paddock begins to spray the crowd below with ammunition, as police rush to stop him. >> do you think the suspect's engagement with mr. campos sped up the timeline of the shooter?

>> i would not make that assumption. >> reporter: police found that a door was metal plate. a second hole was drilled into his wall. the gunfire lasted ten minutes. during that time the suspect also shot at massive jet fuel tanks one. >> we decided he decided to take the lives he did, and had a plan he carried out. >> reporter: paddock checked into the mandalay bay three days earlier than originally reported. they're trying to retrace his every move, using the countless security cameras throughout las vegas. >> we have uncovered over 200 instances of the suspect's traveling throughout las vegas. was gambling the night en with before the massacre. but today, his motive is still unclear. this morning, some new annalses. but the biggest one, why, is

innovative new program. >> reporter: good morning. the first thing any parent would ask if their child was addicted to opioids, what do i do? for years, that's been hard to answer. but what if parents and kids could turn to somebody they have a relationship with, somebody they trust -- the family pediatrician. it was an urgent call from the e.r. last summer. >> it was one of those ces where you find out. and it was shock. hey, nate. how are you doing? >> reporter: pediatrician nathan reynolds had been seeing nate morris since he was 6 years old. no on heroin. >> i remember leaving the room and thinking, where are we going to find help for you and how are we going to help you with this? and there's not a lot. >> reporter: that's the heart of the problem. most adult programs won't take kids under 18. and there aren't a lot of programs just for teens. the data suggests it's more urgent than ever.

overdose deaths among teens are on the rise again. >> right now, it's very hard for kids to get treatment. >> reporter: dr. sharon levy is one of the nation's few pediatric substance aubuse specialists. she launched a pilot program, training pediatricians that can help teen addicts get clean. what was the thinking behind, we have to get pediatricians involved? >> there's 750,000 physicians that can describe pain medicati medications. there's only 30,000 physicians that can prescribe the medications that can treat people. and 30% of us are pediatricians. there's a hole when it comes to getting the medications to the people that need them. >> reporter: in march, when nate overdosed for a third time, he

the transformation process from the young rebecca to the old rebecca. >> it takes 3 1/2 hours. a lot of prosthetics. a lot of making weird faces and stretching my skin. i'm so used to it now. it's not a big deal. >> do you read a book? >> i try to participate in the process. there's a lot of having to blow dry. i handle the blow drier to speed the process along. >> let's talk about the season premiere. i don't think i'm giving spoiler alerts. we know there's a charred house. we don't know how it got charred. >> yes. you had a code word for this? >> i think it's okay with it. we called it the marble. >> oh. >> when the marble happens, they were -- listen. we've been holding on to this secret for like a year and a half now.

they built the house outside of l.a. all of the signs that say tiu around town, it was a different word to throw people off in case someone was being followed to set. >> this is cia stuff. >> i have never been a part of something like this before. >> one of the other cool relationships you have, with chrissy metz. other and daughter. you called your own mom after reading some of the scenes. >> i recognized some of the same behavior that i exhibited towards my own mother. that i could snap on her for no reason. as you do if you're a mom. you feel terrible. >> why do we do that? >> i don't know. >> we've never done that. >> i felt like i read the script initially and bawled and called my mom. >> what did she say?

>> i think she appreciated the call out of nowhere, for no reason. >> when you're a kid, your perspective on your mom, is your job revolves around me. and when you grow up, my mom is a whole human, with a whole life experience. and the show explores that. >> i feel like even though i'm not a mother myself, playing the role of a mother, gives me incredible insight and a lot of newfound appreciation for my mom. >> can we say congratulations to engagement to your long-time boyfriend. >> i am excited. >> are you looking at a family? >> yes. >> you are. yes. >> i feel like this show has put me on the speed track for that, too. i can't wait. i'm excited about that. >> if you have a big wedding or reception, who from the "this is us" cast will be doing the funky chicken dance. >> sterling. sterling. sterling does not -- any opportunity to dance, he's in. >> mandy, we love you. >> we really do.

>> i had to go there. so much of what drives me on "the rossen reports" and the stories i choose are from my personal life. i'm a regular guy. a dad, a husband, whose toilet broke and needs to hire a plumber. i wanted to use all that. no one is fighting for the little i go. guy. i wanted to. >> one is something your mom went through. not only dealing with that on an emotional level, you put the reporter to work. >> stage 3 cancer you get that call. what doctor do you choose? how do you know they're the best doctor? i found myself at ground zero trying to figure that out. in this book, we get on step on step, how to check on doctors. how to make sure there's no lawsuits. how do do that. >> without dwelling too much on

the personal side, you had a bout with skin cancer. and we launched a series on this show. >> i have never spoken about this before. i decided to handle it myself. melanoma. i was diagnosed with melanoma. scared me as a dad. you ahave cancer. and you have to fight that on an emotional level. i go to the store, my dermatologist told me, you have to protect yourself. i'm paying all this extra money for spf 100, 110. and anything over spf 50 doesn't help you. >> a waste of your time and money. something we have in common. as children, we were both at home when there was a home break-in. that happened to me on a couple of occasions. really influenced you and how you deal with the stories on this show. >> i was 10. how old were you? >> it happened three times. >> that's scary. >> at different stages of my life. >> i was 10 years old. someone was trying to bang down our back door.

they were kicking. they were almost in the house. my dad was screaming, i have a bat. i have a gun. he had neither. i'm paralyzed in my bed. it did traumatize me. i tell you how to handle a home invasion. i tell you how to get out of that situation. if you're in the situation, how to get out of it more. >> what's the story you have done for this show that you were surprised by the findings? and what story got the most response? either negative or positive. >> we can always go with a negative response. >> welcome to our world. >> the most popular story we've see done, is savannah's favorite stories. retailers selling used underwear. people are returning underwear. and they're retagging it and putting it on the shelves. >> unbelievable. google it. >> google it. >> have you seen it? >> is it gross? >> you hate that. >> i remember the story vividly.

it freaked me out. what was the one that surprised you the most? >> what surprised me the most was a general situation about how smart criminals are. how smart their getting. and the need for a book like this and our reports and this show, to stay ahead of them. they're evil but supersmart. >> let's do a couple of quick tips here. you brought along props. first one, the home computer. you talked about that camera right there. >> hackers are getting into your web cam. you have no idea. when the computer is off. hackers can watch you with this. so, what i always say is, take a piece of tape. the pope does it. mark zuckerberg does it. the former fbi director does it. put it over the web cam lens when you're using it. and close the laptop when you're not using it. >> mold in your house. it can get into places you don't think about. how do you fight it? >> hidden mold. we showed a mom showing her

sippy cup that was full of mold. you have to get inside. you have to get inside and really pull it apart. this is where the mold building up when there is moisture. that's on a sippy cup. on bath toys, every three weeks, cut open the bath toys to see. no mold in here because we have checked it. this is where mold grows. bottom of shampoo bottles, as well. >> jeff, congratulations on the book. valerie bertinelli has a new suggestion. her bookbook has the same title of her cooking show, "valeries home cooking." you're not paying attention. >> i'm not. >> someone told me if i really want to get to know you, i should spend a little time with you in the kitchen. >> yeah. >> what would i learn from spending time with you in the kitchen at home? >> that's how i show my love. that's how i learned to love. all about love, around the table, with the people that make your life important. >> a lot of the recipes you make today, passed down? >> i stole from my mother. >> that's not stealing, secically. >> we did not have bread in the house. my husband's favorite sandwich is a blt. if you don't have tomatoes from your garden, canned tomatoes are fine. i want to show you a trick of scoring the tomatoes with an

"x." and get them in salted boiling water. and you take them into ice water. you get them to the point where they girl up on the ends. >> that helps you what? peel them? >> you take these out. and they peel way easier. and you get all that off. and they're ready to be chopped and put into this pot right here. >> they sell cans of tomatoes with that stuff done for you. >> what am i going to do with tomatoes in my garden? california weather is ridiculously beautiful. we have bacon. i usually put my bacon in the oven. but it's important to do this step for that. for nibbling. an i need that oil. the oil is going to flavor my onions. all this gorgeous bacon fat comes out. and that ends up being a topping on your pasta. >> we're saving everything in the pan after you get the bacon out. >> once you do, once you've

saved all of the bacon grease, you take your unionions that ha been sliced. i can hear them num, numing without us. >> who started on the wine already? >> we did. >> you have to have wine when you cook. >> i know. how long is that going to cook down? >> that's going to saute until it looks like this. >> make sure they see that. >> nice and brown and soft and gorgeous. they get nice and tender. all that flavor of the bacon grease in there. >> the aforementioned tomatoes -- >> have been chopped up and seeded. you take the insides out and get those in. and you saute a little bit more. >> a pinch of salt? >> you've done this before. and a little chili pepper flake. >> that's pep center. >> that's pepper. and a little bit of white wine. you let that white wine cook off because the alcohol will cook

away. >> perfect. let's move down here. >> all right. >> push me. push me. okay. this is all together. if it doesn't look like it's got enough sauce in there, you save that pasta sauce. that's an important sauce. it has all of the flavor. highly salted. that's going to add the flavor. you have the tomatoes, the onion and the bacon grease. you add your cooked pasta. and you get your arugula. >> why not? >> you can never have too much bacon. >> we didn't have a chance to talk about -- >> the garlic bread. >> that's good. >> got to serve it with garlic bread. >> the there anything better than garlic bread? i'll do that on the plate. >> this is not quite warm enough. so, i'm going to get these platters over here. these are gorgeous. this is what happens. and you sprinkle the rest of the bacon on top. i don't know why you're not giving me a glass of wine.
