danger. the family had just realized the pet was missing and never had an opportunity to go and get her and bring her home. the wegmans love animals. they have cat, dog, chickens and ducks. and today they're talking about the cat that's no longer with them. >> she was our pet. she had a collar, you could tell she was taken care of. she was our pet. >> reporter: violet was her name. tiffany's 6-year-old daughter had taken violet as her favorite pet. she would wander the neighborhood. on tuesday she was out and a resident feared she was lost and sent her to the animal rescue league. that was at 7:00 that night. by 11:00, violet was euthanized. >> the staff member felt she was a safety risk. she tried to call her manager. and the manager, i believe, was, you know, didn't answer the phone for whatever reason and she made the unilateral decision to euthanize the cat. >> reporter: that decision is

not one the interim director stands by. the worker has been fired. he says she made a bad call. >> clearly she didn't follow our policies, but good old commonsense would tell you if a cat is wearing a caul callinoll. we've had boardline death threats. >> reporter: he's going to work with staff to make sure it hasn't happened again. he made a facebook page for all who want to see the good work, to come in. wegman is demanding change. >> you have the opportunity to change this. you have the opportunity to make clearly, thousands of people happy. make the right choice. >> reporter: the shelter will work to do just that. he says nothing is going to bring the cat back. he has offered the family a

replacement animal. that is something wegman says she and her family are just not ready to accept right now. the shelter is urging all that are out there that are moved by the story to get involved and help out your local shelters to insure nothing like this happens there. reporting live in berks county, nbc 10 news. to our first alert weather, a fall-like feel this morning in university city. university of pennsylvania students bundled up as they made their way around campus today. let's take a live look at what's happening in cape may. we see some raindrops on the lens there. not day to be at the beach, that's for sure. >> nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us here. we have a few showers to talk about? >> especially at the beaches. do you think the cape may picture looks nasty, this is avalon. you've got fog, you've got some raindrops. nasty, nasty day. and a chill and a wind.

on the other hand, inland, it's just cloudy for the most part. that's wilmington. we've seen the clouds all day. take a look at this. rain moving in from the ocean. that's why cape may is seeing those drops and ocean city. now, we're also seeing other areas of rain. this disturbance moving right up the coast as we go through the night tonight. in the meantime, the temperature hasn't gone up much today, 65 in philadelphia, but it's only 61 in reading and potts town. 53 in mount pocono. wow. it was only 63 for the high yesterday. about 66 today. we're going to jump into the 70s tomorrow and there we got one day 82 before we plunge again down to the 60s on monday. as we go through the night tonight, cloudy skies and some of that rain from the shore starts moving up. don't leave the windows open tonight. best chance, really, of getting

he said the city is an important region across the entire energy industry. its location is a key part of that. take a look at this from sky force 10. a tractor trailer overturned and it blocked the ramp to the walt whitman bridge just after 11:00 this morning in south philadelphia. do you see that 18 wheeler flipped on its side, almost brocki blocking the entire ramp. it reopened about an hour ago. crews are getting ready to shut down the northeast extension to the pennsylvania turnpike for construction for the whole weekend. the closure will add over an hour to your detours that you have to work around. the northeast extension will close in lehigh county at 9:00 tonight, that's less than five hours away. workers have to shut down the roads so they can replace a bridge. it will remain closed through monday morning. nbc 10's steven fishing is

joining us live. walk us through what's going to happen over the next few days there. >> reporter: it's going to be a closure, but this is also a popular weekend we're told. a lot of people saying they're going up that direction. pocono area for the fall foliage to do pumpkin and apple picking. the height of traffic could come on sunday as everyone is trying to make their way home. for a few more hours the northeast extension will get you where you need to go. signs are up letting drivers know come 9:00 tonight the turnpike will be shun dotdown f the weekend. are you avoiding the turnpike this weekend? >> yes, i am. >> reporter: he was on his way home from the poconos and says this is a popular time of year when many visit the mountains. >> yeah, it's changing of the leaves and stuff. a lot of people want to come up here. >> reporter: he wanted to stay the weekend but he decided to

what you need to know to get around the closure. this afternoon, investigators in las vegas are still at a loss and can't explain what drove a man to shoot and kill 58 people. right now, they are defending their investigation. the las vegas sheriff is defending the timeline of events of the shooting, which the mandalay bay hotel is disputing. the timeline released this week is different than last week's. police say an autopsy of stephen paddock's brain shows no unusual signs and 45 people are still in the hospital. another actress is accusing harvey weinstein of rape rose mcgowan tweeted that a person with the initials hw raped her. mcgowan confirmed she was talking about weinstein. she is a growing list of accusers against the executive. it caps off a week of constant new allegations against him

since "the new york times" reported the alleged assaults which go back decades. tonight local parents are holding their own meeting to talk about an ongoing mold problem that's plaguing their school district. holy glen elementary is closed because of the mold and there's no timetable for it to reopen. a voluntary committee is trying to keep parents informed. all six schools at the monroe township district has been closed. at the jersey shore an entire school district is closed because of an issue with construction. the superintendent at pinelands regional school district in ocean county says the problem is not related to air quality or asbestos. details were not given but say it's at the high school. right now target is looking to add 1,000 more workers in our area for the holidays. the retail giant is holding a job fair at all of its stores starting today through sunday.

the bull's-eye hiring 3,000 workers across pennsylvania. it's all part of target's push to hire 100,000 people for this year's holiday season. the wharton school at the university of pennsylvania is joining the push to bring amazon's second headquarters to the city of philadelphia. today several groups of students presented their pitches to city leaders including mayor kinney. the winners of the writing and case competition will have their proposals reviewed biy the city appointed team that will deliver the final proposal to amazon. we spoke with one of the co-winners about what prompted their proposal. >> the outside benefits of the talent pool and city life. but at the end of the day, the dollars and cents i think will drive their decision. we spent a lot of time thinking about that. >> the deadline for cities to submit proposals to amazon is coming up next thursday. today a new space for local college students in needs of things like school supplies and food, west chester university

held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its resource pantry. the new space has food, business clothes and supplies for low income students. officials say they needed to find a permanent and bigger home for the student pantry because the demand was so strong. students in camden have 3,000 more reasons to get excited about reading thanks to subaru. the automaker donated 3,000 science books to camden schools. they presented the books to the district superintendent this morning at the hb wilson family school. the books will go to 14 schools across the city. this afternoon, turning an abandoned stretch of railroad tracks in philadelphia into miles of green space. volunteers came out to work on the reading railroad tracks in north philadelphia. they planted more than a thousand trees, plants, and shrubs today. it's part of the city's plan to revitalize the tracks into a three mile green stretch called the rail park.

in delaware county the students in chester are doing their part to help hurricane victims in houston and miami. they donated supply and wrote letters to their counterparts. school officials said it meant a lot to them. >> one of the lessons that they learned is when we come together as a group, as a community, that we are able to impact the lives of others. >> the supplies and letters will be split up and delivered to schools in both miami and houston. great of them to think about it. here at home our first alert team looking at the weather. >> first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. >> they're coming back but they're coming back for just a brief time. and then it's back to these kind of numbers for early next week. plus, a little bit of wind. 65 with cloudy skies in

philadelphia. we're pretty close to that across the rest of the area. you can see all the clouds across the region. and in philadelphia as we go through the night, cloudy skies. the temperature is not going to be changing very much through the evening hours. not a whole lot of wind either. further to the south we have better chances of rain. one of the places further south is delaware. let's check these temperatures. barely above 60. talliville, limestone road, 62. 64 at middletown. reedy point. mid 60s, 65 looks like just about everywhere on this map. i didn't cheat that's what the computers say. rehobeth beach, bethany beach, you know, you get the idea. everybody's 65 degrees in southern delaware. there's rain right along the jersey shore and some of the delaware beaches. it's light. coming in off the ocean. you can see the direction some

of those clouds are moving. and so this little disturbance will be moving up during the night. that's when our best chance of rain is over the weekend. and we do have a chance of a shower for the temple game tomorrow, but it's probably less than 30% that there will be any rain. the temperatures, right around average, a little bit above average for this time of the year. not a whole lot of wind either. decent football weather. we've got that east wind, the showers to the south. they're going to be moving up through the area as we go through the evening. so, again, the best chance of rain all weekend is coming tonight. the east wind continues on saturday, yes, still there. but we may get some sunshine here. we get some breaks in the clouds in the afternoon. that allows the temperature to go up above 70. and then on sunday, the wind starts turning in out of the southwest. got some fog early, but the

clouds disappear and if we get the sunshine sunday afternoon, we're getting into the 80s in most parts of the area. not at the shore, because the ocean is so much cooler. and then we've got a cold front coming down sunday night and into monday. this particular model does not really bring us any rain, but others do with the front. it's generally sunday night. then the northwest winds come in, brings a colder air in for monday and tuesday. then we warm right back up again next week. during the day tomorrow, a lot of clouds, some peeks of sunshine during the afternoon. langhorn gets up to 74. reading to 75. and that's well above average. that average high is 68 for this time of the year. and, of course, the last couple of days have been well down in the 60s. should feel decent by tomorrow afternoon. 69 in longport with the wind

coming in off the ocean. and through the weekend, a lot warmer than it's been the last couple of days. we have the chance of some showers, especially in new jersey and delaware during the day tomorrow. the best chance is tonight. then on sunday during the day, i expect it to stay dry. some fog in the morning. sunshine in the afternoon. temperatures getting into the low 80s. then watch what happens after that. we go from 82 to 63. possible early morning showers with that cold front on monday. and another chilly day on tuesday. look at the morning lows, in the 40s. then it will start to warm up again. look at this dry stretch we're getting here. from monday during the day all the way through next weekend it looks dry. a lot of sunshine and look at those temperatures go right back up to about 10 degrees above normal by next weekend.

right now out west, deadly wildfires are still raging along the entire state of california. with no end in sight. >> and now 31 people are dead making it the deadliest week of the wildfires in the state's history. george spencer is life with what's happening right now. >> right now, 21 separate wildfires are burning, each one of them approximately the size of fairmount park. those fires are only about 10% contained as crews scramble to

do everything they can to control them. more than 3,500 homes and businesses have now been destroyed. including the home of charles schultz, the creator of the iconic peanuts comic. >> there's a lot of small farmers out there who have invested their life's savings and it's -- for a lot of them it will be gone. >> some remains are actually intact bodies, much easier to identify and get things from. some are merely ash and bones. >> tough to listen to those descriptions. take a look at how damaging this is a tree that was hollowed out by the flames. that fire you see there, somehow torched the tree from the inside out. things might get worse for the firefighters out there in california. the flames around more and force live in the breaking news center, i'm george spencer, nbc

and close to rehobeth beach in delaware. that will gradually be moving up. that area of rain does extend down to the south. so that's a legitimate disturbance that is inside the overall area of clouds. and so our chances of rain increase as we go through the evening mp evin eveni evening. temperatures in the low 60s. lancaster is 60. mount pocono is 53. the rest of the area is in the 60s. the ocean is in the 60s. that's not a coincidence with the wind coming in off the ocean. if the ocean was in the 70s, our temperatures might be in the 70s too with the east wind. we were in the 60s yesterday, 60s today. 70s tomorrow as the wind starts to shift a little. when it shifts big time, sunday 82, then we drop another 20 degrees for monday and into tuesday. but that's it. then we start warming up again. you can see through the night

tonight, temperatures not dropping very much. holding fairly steady all night. it's not going to get colder, but it will get a little bit wetter. so keep the rain gear with you as you head out for the evening. we'll see if you're going to need that for the rest of the weekend coming up. here's a look now at some of the other stories we're following county by county at 4:00. c camden police are asking for help. these cars were stolen, surveillance videos show the robbers. if you recognize that orange sedan there, contact police. officials at lafayette college are appealing at easton. last month, easton's planning commission denied the school's request. story buildings with student housing and retail space.

hours. there will also be raffle prizes. right now, a marine who lost both of his legs during an explosion overseas is running a marathon every day this entire month. >> his name is rob jones. he's a veteran who had his legs amputated after an sloeexplosio afghanistan seven years ago. now he's trying to run 31 marathons in 31 different cities, including right here in philly. jones says he's doing it to show other wounded veterans that nothing can step him from achieving their goals. >> when somebody that may be struggling sees me doing this, they might have a better chance or it might be easier for them to envision themselves being able to do it as well. this is just an extension of that overall mission. >> up next a marathon in new york city. >> incredible. he's in great shape. >> that's inspiration right there. >> to the weather now, cloudy,

overcast. rainy. socked in. should i keep going, glenn? >> that's okay, that's enough. the weather is going to be improving in time for the weekend. it really has been a warm month, about nine degrees above average in philadelphia. over ten degrees above average in allentown. it's 65 degrees now, even with clouds all day. we're close to the average high temperature. 68. 60s across much of the rest of the area, look at all the clouds. and as soon as you get some sunshine, we go up into the 70s and 80s. here we go, chester bucks montgomery. 59 degrees right now. west bradford at 60. chester springs, malvern, coatesville at 61. 60 in milford township. 61 in bedminister. and warrington. 63 in new hope. it's chilly out there.

not as windy as yesterday. so it may not feel quite as chilly. we do have some sprinkles along cape may county and sussex coast in delaware. some of the moisture starting to move up and more of it down to the south that will work its way up as well. that's why tonight is the greatest chance of seeing any showers. we do have a chance of some isolated showers tomorrow. temple playing at noon. pretty decent weather overall. you may be able to get through the whole game without any rain. you'll see here, one of our computer models shows some of that rain increasing in delaware and south jersey during the night tonight. by tomorrow, again, some more showers coming up. but not everybody getting it. especially north and west. just a lot of clouds. if we get a little bit of sunshine, that will allow the temperatures to get into the 70s. then by sunday, we could start off with some fog.

and then the clouds are disappearing. that means the sun's coming out. that mean temperatures are shooting up into the 80s. but this is a cold front coming down. there's sunday at 5:00. so it's not bothering most people for most of sunday. lehigh valley, berks county could be getting it for dinnertime. then it races down to the south. that's our other significant chance of showers sunday night. and then the drier air comes down for monday. and much colder air more like today. as we go through the night tonight, temperatures not dropping very much. a few showers around. fog in the morning. and then as we go through the day, it's still cool for most of the day as you'll see. but we do get into the 70s for a change across a good bit of the area. allentown, quaker town still struggling to get to 70.

you notice the rain kind of stopping as we go into later in the afternoon. so it's a little warmer, it's a little drier. that's a nice way to end the day on saturday. then on sunday, not expecting any rain. some fog in the morning. more sunshine, especially in the afternoon. southwest wind pushes temperatures up into the 80s. so we're going to be seeing some -- a lot of people happy and outdoor activities and stuff like that on sunday. so it's pretty good timing for those who like that kind of thing. and if you like the cool fall weather that we haven't seen, you have early next week. but that's only temporary, it's going to warm up again and next weekend might be almost as warm as this. >> wow. >> we're not finish would summer, glenn, somehow. >> yeah, it's kind of a warm weather pattern, but it's not warm over the whole country.

super appreciative of it. >> she's one of the lucky recipients of a renovation project courtesy of rebuilding together philadelphia. the non-profit rehabs homes for those who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it. through this program, she's getting new floors, electrical, railings, and something she hasn't had in decades, a new oven. >> it hasn't worked in over almost 20 years. i was using roasters and now i have brand-new stove and oven. >> you get chance to see the gratitude and appreciation from the community members and it's priceless. >> chief inspector singleton is one of the officers taking time to be here. philly and septa pd came out in full force. >> i got more volunteers than i needed. >> they'll be back out here tomorrow, doing more good for the people who need it.
