>> reporter: in the short term he and his team are fielding call after call from clients. they're trying their best to get them answers. >> small employers and individuals who buy on their own are the most impacted. i do believe that market has the possibility to implode. >> reporter: tim furlong, nbc 10 news. we have breaking news just in to the newsroom. another setback in the president 's quest to pull the plug on sanctuary cities. a court order recently said the justice department could not withhold public grants to sanctuary cities like philadelphia. the justice department appealed to get that decision switched. in the past 15 minutes a federal judge denied that appeal. this all comes one day after the justice department sent a letter to philadelphia, giving the city two weeks to show how it's

skies there. so tonight, we'll see 60 in philadelphia, 57 in coatesville, 63 in dover. if you're in stone harbor, 63. mount holly, 58. atlantic city, 62 with a 56 in allentown. a little cooler in the outlying areas. nothing showing up on radar for much of the area. just offshore and approaching parts of southern delaware and the jersey shore we have some shower activity. this is associated with an area of low pressure that's down to the south of us and it's kind of kicking some moisture in our direction. we'll deal with some of these showers as the evening wears on. more importantly, what about your weekend? that's what you want to know, right? it looks like we could see an isolated shower tomorrow. we'll see more clouds than sun. we're basically going to be in the upper 60s and low 70s. sunday looks outstanding in the 80s. don't get married to that number. big changes on the way for next week. we'll talk about that when i come back. we could be in for traffic nightmare. in a few hours a busy section of the northeast extension will

close. it is part of a planned construction project on the pennsylvania turnpike. the northeast extension will close in lehigh county in just about four hours. shutting down at 9:00 tonight. the turnpike will close between lehigh valley and pocono interchanges in south whitehall township. crews will replace a bridge forcing detours in broeth directions. the plan is to complete the work in 55 hours. reopening the long section of highway is scheduled for early monday morning. officials warn it will cause a ripple effect on traffic throughout the area. drivers say they are getting ready. >> everybody is going to have to change their schedules. they'll see what's going on friday night, saturday morning situations and maybe leave early on sunday. come back really late. >> turnpike officials believe sunday could be the heaviest day for traffic.

right now a jury is deciding the fact of an accused bomber for allegedly planting bombs throughout new york city and new jersey. last september, 30 people were hurt in attacks. his lawyers asked to acquit rahimi of charges. investigators in las vegas are still at a loss and can't explain what drove a man to shoot and kill 58 people. the las vegas sheriff is defending the timeline of events of the shooting, despite differences between one released earlier this week and one released last week. the sheriff also had to hold back tears when talking about one of his officers who was hurt in the shooting. >> he sustained a substantial wound to his shoulder. through his bicep, into his chest and out his back. the reason why i bring this one up, he asked me if he could go

south philly. cooler today, warmer weather though is coming back this weekend. >> nbc 10 chief meteorologist tammie souza is back. is the rain going to be around sunday? >> mostly sunday. you planned your weekend. a little bit of everything. i'll explain that in just a moment. let's go to the mountains, do you want to go? let's look for the foliage turning. we may be struggling with that because of aelate season warm u and the delight conditiconditio gray skies. what we're deal ing with is cool air in our area. 60s is here. we have a front that could bring showers and behind that more chilly air. it's going to be warm, cold, warm, cold. that's going to be the pattern we go through for the next couple of weeks.

it's 65 in philadelphia. 63 in allentown. 65 in wilmington. vineland, 68. atlantic city 66. and 66 in dover as well. so a comfortable afternoon, very close to where we should be this time of year, just a degree or two below what that average is. everything but the kitchen sink. that's what we're going to be dealing with. mists, sprinkles and a shower. at some point each and every day through monday. not total washouts, not all day long. just a chance at some point each and every day. we're going to be cold, warm, cold, warm. repeat. that's knowigoing to be the pat through next weekend. and you know, the extended outlook is going to be a really long dry stretch. next week we're not going to see any rain, even in and through next weekend. that's going to be harder on the fall colors. again, that's because of that late season warmup that we have been enjoying. so looking across the doppler radar, there's nothing really in philadelphia. you know what? we have these showers that are offshore. there's an area of low pressure to the south, that's actually

kicking some of those showers in our area. you can see them making it on shore here. a couple of things we need to keep an eye on. that area of low pressure, kicking some sprinkles and showers in our area tonight and tomorrow, and this cold front making its way through the upper midwest. triggering showers in iowa and wisconsin. that heads our way and could be our rainmaker sunday evening and perhaps early on monday. we watched the wind blowing out of the east and northeast. we could see sprinkles and showers tomorrow morning. upper 60s and low 70s. probably is where we're going to wind up. could see showers in southern delaware, new jersey tomorrow in the afternoon, evening. sunday, we're deal ing with clouds. they're coming in out of the south and southwest. those are warm winds. look at the clearing we get. by the time we're in the middle of the afternoon -- so a lot of the day is going to be clear. we'll have a nice warmup. then it's 7:00, we see maybe showers through the lehigh

valley making their way through philadelphia, perhaps at 9:00, 10:00 at night through the jersey shore. exiting the area sometime around midnight. that's what the model thinks rights now. we'll adjust the time over the next day or so. then we see the winds kbcoming out of the north on monday. that's a cooler air mass. we go back to the big chill after a delightful warmup on sunday. the lehigh valley will be a chilly 44. 52 along the jersey shore and 57 in delaware. again, maybe some mist, perhaps a sprinkle or light shower possible tonight. gray skies tomorrow, 72 in philadelphia. 72 in the lehigh valley. south jersey 72. 69 on the shore. delaware, you'll see 74. don't want to leave you out. pennsylvania suburbs at 72. again, an isolated shower is possible. especially if you're going to the temple game, maybe pack up that rain slicker. i don't think you're going to need it. it's best to keep it with you. again, 72 tomorrow. there's the 82 on sunday.

berks county family is heart broken after its cat was euthaniz euthanized. >> the worker violeated policy and has been fired. >> she's awesome. >> reporter: it's the photo that's been seen my thousands. >> it's horrible. >> reporter: tiffany wegman is mourning the loss of her daughter's favorite pet. the cat's name was violet. she was wandering the neighborhood tuesday night and neighbor called the animal rescue league of berks county who took the cat to the shelter around 7:00. by 11:00, violet was dead. >> if you can't handle the stress you shouldn't be there. >> reporter: the shelter said the worker had been on multiple calls and violet who was scared was acting out. >> she made the unilateral

decision to euthanize. >> reporter: wegman is furious. she says she didn't have a chance to come and get her cat before she was killed. >> clearly she didn't follow our policies. but good old commonsense would tell you that if a cat is wearing a collar, this is somebody's pet. >> reporter: that collar is this one on her facebook page denouncing the shelter. place she says is supposed to care for animals and not kill them. the interim director says the worker has been fired. he says the attention the sho t shelter is getting will hopefully allow all to improve. >> i can focus on making sure something like this never happens again. >> reporter: wegman is welcoming the change. the shelter says animal welfare workers are underpaid and oftentimes the facilities are understaffed. it's offering wegman a new cat free of charge but it's an offer she says she's not ready to accept. she wants shelters to hold off when it comes to euthanizing animals.

police say this guy is going into unlocked garages. it happened at least twice last month. one person in middletown township spotted the guy in his garage. police say he took a chainsaw from another township. in merser county a former office manager pleaded guilty to stealing more than $500,000 from her employer. she worked in the payroll department in reports engineering. at the jersey shore an entire school district is closed because of an issue with construction. the superintendent at pinelands regional school district in ocean county says it's not related today air quality as it was last week. officials didn't give details about the construction problem but that it is at the high school. right now, a marine who lost both his legs during an explosion overseas is running a marathon every day this entire month. rob jones' legs were amputated

after an explosion in afghanistan seven years ago. since then, he has learned how to walk, how to run and how to swim again. and now he is trying to run 31 marathons in 31 different cities, including right here in philadelphia. jones says he is doing it to show other wounded veterans that nothing can stop them from achieving their goals. >> when somebody that may be struggling sees me doing this, they might have a better chance or it might be easier for them envisioning themselves being able to do it as well. this is just an extension of that overall mission. >> and up next for jones, is a marathon in new york city. all right a warning tonight to parents from a former nfl football player. >> he says parents need to know their boys and girls can have long-term damage if they're playing contact sports. that is the message from nfl hall of famer harry carson. he was part of a forum on capitol hill to talk about cte. it's a degenerative disease found in individuals with a

a man who died after getting into a car crash with tennis star venus williams was killed by complications of blunt force trauma. that is according to the medical examiner's report. the crash happened in june in palm beach grarardens, florida. the man's family has filed a wrongful death suit against williams. jason aldean is getting ready to play in little rock, arkansas. he resumed his tour last night in tulsa, his first show since

the las vegas massacre earlier this month. >> sometimes the united states may seem really divided and we seem like we're fight ing with each other. at the end of the day, this is the best country in the world. >> after las vegas, aldean canceled three shows in california out of respect for the victims and their families. this isn't the first time aldean has performed since the shooting. he performed tom petty's won't back down as a tribute to the victims on last weekend's "saturday night live." we're now more than a month away from the philadelphia marathon. this story right here might serve as inspiration for you. a runner at the chicago marathon on sunday crossed the finish line, thanks to two police officers. the officers grabbed a folding chair for him to use as a crunch. they helped him for more than two miles after he collapsed. >> i looked up and said, god, please, help me. and no sooner than ten seconds did an officer show up.

because this is jim's kind of day. we're going to call it the jim rosenfield day. we have gray skies out there. mist, maybe an isolated sprinkle. today's high, 65. that's below where we should be. we should typically be around 68 this time of year. no rain yet but we could actually have maybe .01 of an inch overnight tonight. and our highest wind gust at 30 miles per hour. sunset is at 6:24. not liking the fact that the evenings are getting shorter and shorter. it's getting darker earlier and earlier. this is when i say rain, it is light shower activity. it's being driven by an area of low pressure. it's right off of the carolina coastline and off of virginia down to the south. we also have another batch of rain coming out of the midwest. we'll watch these sprinkles coming in tonight. we'll get a break tomorrow and much of the day on sunday. this front will approach and bring us showers sunday evening and into early monday morning. behind it, the chilliest air yet. you knew that was coming, right? we have winds that have been out

of the east to northeast keeping us on the cool side. we could see a sprinkle or shower into tomorrow morning. notice all the cloud cover tomorrow, if you're going to the temple game, bring the rain slicker just in case. i think you'll probably be dry. just kind of damp out there. we could get showers tomorrow evening ing south jersey and delaware. sunday, look at the wind it turns out of the southwest. it's a warm wind. we'll be looking at the skies starting to clear out and temperatures will soar into the 80 range. maybe even the low 80s. here comes the rain with the front. 7:00 through the lehigh valley, crossing philadelphia between 8:00 and 10:00 and exiting the jersey shore around midnight. after that we'll start to clear out for monday. you see the arrows coming out of the north? that indicates some very cold air. how much rain are we talking about? this is not very impressive. in many places we're picking up .2 of an inch from now till monday morning. maybe .2 in the poconos in

had last four dickgits of his social security number. >> i called their service number to see if there was an account. >> at&t told him there was no problem and the call was fraudulent. we contacted at&t and says it's fighting the problem with a free service wireneless customers ca sign up for. at&t launched the service last december and says it's blocked more than three million blocked calls. joe doesn't have the service, but did the next best thing, he hung up. >> he did the smart thing. gave them nothing. >> gave them nothing. >> at&t also points out it does not ask for personal information via e-mail or text. and folks, check with your wireless carrier to see if it offers a similar program. also, if you're not sure who's calling don't answer and never give out personal information to anyone you're not sure of.
