>> an oil rig exploded on a lake near new orleans overnight injuring crew members and leading to fears of a possible leak. nbc's tammy leitner has more on this situation that has been changing. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. five people are critically injured. they've launched a search and rescue. at this point it's believed one person is still missing. overnight an explosion on an oil rig in louisiana near the city of kenner just outside of new orleans. fire erupting on a platform used to transfer oil. >> we're on the levee and we can see it's going to be an oil rig that's on fire right now. >> reporter: rattled residents reported hearing a loud sonic boom. some posting to social media capturing large fireballs and smoke from the rig. seen from more than a mile away on the shore of lake pontchartrain. workers were cleaning a chemical on the platform when the rig exploded sending seven people to the hospital with injuries.

>> from what we understand they were cleaning some type of chemicals on the platform but obviously the victims of this fire are in the hospital right now. we can leave those interviews until another day. >> reporter: it's too early to tell if any oil has been spilled but no drinking water has been affected. >> we're trying to stop the oil flow and then we'll have to cool it and let it burn off. there are storage tank on that platform and depending on the volume of those tanks is probably how long this is going to burn. >> reporter: at this point it's unclear what caused that explosion. this morning investigators will be going out to that platform to determine if any oil has spilled into the lake. >> tammy leitner on this story for us, thanks very much. also this morning the fight against those deadly wildfires in california now entering a second week. crews are battling those flames. we're seeing dramatic video of two friends trying to escape one of the growing fires. joe fryer's in santa rosa for us. joe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good

morning. the winds have died down considerably, but the fire danger is still very real. we've seen evacuation orders listed in the city of napa and other areas. a welcome break for exhausted firefighters on the front line who have been battling for a week now trying to save as many lives and homes as possible. helped by calmer winds and cooling temps, 11,000 firefighters are dpaning ground but the toll on first responders has been brutal. help people understand, how long are the shifts. >> we work 24-hour shifts. >> reporter: a week after these fires started they're still burning aggressively, still burning homes and firefighters are working around the clock to put them out. thousands of firefighters are sleeping in tent cities, using makeshift bathrooms and eating when they can. >> we're probably sleeping in this dirt lot here. we're grateful for any sleep. we're not complaining. >> reporter: many firefighters cope with losing their own. >> this is my house, this is my

home. this is my everything. now i have to figure out where to go from here. >> reporter: most of the deceased are older than 70, like carmen barres. she was with her husband when flames engulfed their home. they held each other in the pool for five hours. armando survived, but carmen, too weak from the smoke, died in his arms. >> they did that together. that was their strength. that was the beauty behind their relationship and everything they did. >> reporter: how bad has it been? >> i can't breathe. >> reporter: this newly released video shows two roommates survived the terrifying drive but lost their home and all of their possessions to the fires. amid the devastation, some stories of hope. >> izzie? >> reporter: jack weaver and his friend came back to search for their dog izzie. when out of the blue, a miracle. >> izzie's here.

come here, baby. >> reporter: izzie was reunited with her owners, frightened but unhurt. >> i dropped my phone i was so excited. yeah, it was a great moment. >> reporter: the death toll this morning is at 40. firefighters, though, say they finally turned a corner. the three big fires that have devastated this region over the past week are now between 40 and 65% contained. savannah and matt. >> joe fryer, thank you. >> we've got some breaking news now overseas. iraqi federal forces launched a major operation that's aimed at driving kurdish forces from the disputed city of kirkuk. troops have not yet entered that city but residents have reported what sounds like shelling and rocket fire. kurdish forces took control of kirkuk back in 2014 when isis swept across northern iraq and the country's armed forces crumbled. iraq has since demanded that the city be handed back to federal control. tensions have escalated since the kurds voted for independence in a nonbinding referendum last

month. the conflict puts the united states in a difficult position because both the iraqi army and those kurdish forces are our allies in the fight against isis. the death toll is still rising this morning after a massive truck bomb blast in somalia's capital over the weekend. over 300 people were killed and about 300 injured in the deadliest attack in somalia's history. some were being evacuated to mogadishu for treatment. no organization has claimed responsibility for this attack, but somalia's blaming the al qaeda-linked al shabaab extremist group. there are big headlines coming out of the white house centering on the president's relationships with keep members of his administration and party. this as a former white house insider declared war against the republican establishment. nbc's kristen welker is covering all this for us. good morning to you. >> reporter: busy monday here at the white house.

president trump will spend the day focused largely on his domestic agenda. he and vice president mike pence set to have lunch with majority leader mitch mcconditional. on the menu tax reform and the president's orders at gutting parts of obamacare. but it's mr. trump's foreign policy that's under a bright spotlight with his secretary of state speaking out over the weekend. this morning the relationship between the president and the nation's top diplomat under mounting scrutiny with secretary of state rex tillerson repeatedly refusing to deny he called the president a moron after a national security meeting in july first reported by nbc news. >> i'm not going to deal with that kind of petty stuff. i'm not playing. i'm not playing. you want to make a game out of it, i'm not playing. >> reporter: but secretary tillerson did address a provocative comment from senator bob corker who told "the washington post," president trump's tweets and fp comments undercut tillerson's efforts on iran and north korea saying you

cannot publicly castrate your own secretary of state. tillerson's response? >> i checked, i'm fully intact. >> reporter: and tweeting that tillerson was wasting his time trying to negotiate with north korea, tillerson insisted sunday the strategy is working. >> he's made it clear that i should continue my diplomatic efforts. those diplomatic efforts will continue until first bomb drops. >> reporter: nikki haley defending the approach to north korea and downplaying any tensions between the president and secretary tillerson. >> i've been in the room with them many times. they continue to work strongly together. >> reporter: and while the administration is striking a united front, the president reaching out to members of his own party including senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. the two set to meet for lunch today after months of tensions between the president and mcconnell over the stalled republican agenda. according to a white house official, they'll discuss the budget, tax reform and foreign

today. thank you very much. >> a lot more to get to this morning including the long road to recovery for a family held hostage by a taliban-linked group for five years. for first time since arriving back in canada, they're now opening up about what they faced and their future. stephanie gosk is just outside ontario with that story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. joshua and caitlan boyle are here with their three children. they're adjusting to what must be an unimaginable shock. today we get the first look inside their lives. held hostage in afghanistan for five years, canadian joshua boyle and his american wife caitlan coleman are back in canada this morning. for their children who have only lived in captivity, it's the start of a new life. he's 4 years old and has never had toys or books, has never heard of mickey mouse. >> he doesn't actually understand that there was a sun outside. so forget mickey mouse.

we're dealing with the basics. it's not welcome to the western world. it's not welcome to canada. it's welcome to life. >> reporter: caitlan coleman remains secluded, not yet speaking publicly. her husband providing this photograph. boyle says for his wife it's still too soon to talk about what happened. >> her religious faith gets her through. and i think that and her love of being a mother. >> reporter: boyle says the couple traveled to afghanistan in 2012 to help villagers living under taliban rule. but were kidnapped by militants. pregnant at the time of their abduction, caitlan gave birth to two sons and a daughter in captivity. according to boyle, the couple also had another daughter who was killed by their captors. the decision to travel to the war zone infuriated members of caitlan's family. >> taking your pregnant wife to a very dangerous place, it's unconscionable. >> reporter: since their release new attention is being focused

on boyle's life before the abduction. at one point he was briefly married to the sister of omar kutter. he was released, the canadian government determined he was being held unjustly. today boyle describes the horror his family endured, imprisoned by a notorious terror group. >> we'd be kept in a chicken coop that they sort of armored up. the worst of them were underground filled with water. >> reporter: and even though they now have all the space they could want, they all still sleep together in this one small bedroom, their children still eating off the floor. boyle worries they are scarred after years of brutal treatment. he and his wife gradually helping them to adapt to their new way of life. >> so what we're seeing now is really what happens when a child goes its entire life without even a concept of what hoping for better is because they don't know that better can even exist.

>> reporter: boyle says they are looking for help with this difficult transition and reaching out to psychologists, but honestly, their situation is so unique, they're really in unchartered territory. guys, back to you. >> stephanie gosk, incredible story. thank you very much. in other news, there's new fallout tied to those controversial anthem protests in the nfl. colin kaepernick who was the first to take a knee last season and is currently out of the league is filing a grievance accusing team owners of conspiring against him. national correspondent miguel almaguer has that story. >> reporter: it's an issue that's become a political lightning rod, nfl players protesting during the national anthem becoming a divisive topic nationwide. now the man who started the move machine, colin kaepernick, is suing the nfl saying he's being forced out of the league. this morning colin kaepernick is fighting to get back on the

field. last season becoming the first nfl player to take a knee during the national anthem protesting racial inequality and social injustice. now kaepernick is filing a grievance against the nfl. his high profile attorney mark ger igos is claiming that it kept him out of a job this spring. >> wouldn't you love to see one of these nfl owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he's fired? >> reporter: president trump waded into the issue last month. colin kaepernick arguing that all the team's owners violated a collective bargaining agreement to keep kaepernick from playing this season. with the nfl declining comment, the players association says in a statement, they have a duty to assist mr. kaepernick as we do

giants won a game. and i woke up this morning, wow, it actually happened. >> it's a miracle. frightening moments for passengers aboard an airasia flight when the plane suddenly lost cabin pressure and plunged 20,000 feet. kelly cobiella with the story this morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. passengers describe scenes of just complete chaos inside this cabin. the oxygen masks came down. some passengers were so frightened they were texting their good-byes to their families convinced this flight was crashing. confusion and fear at 32,000 feet. passengers told to strap on oxygen masks. >> fasten your seat belts. >> reporter: cabin crews shouting instructions telling the 145 people on board to brace. >> one of the stewardesses was running down the aisle screaming, put your belts on, put your belts on, tie on your oxygen masks. they kept yelling it out.

one at the back of the plane was going off. the alarms kept going. >> reporter: the airasia flight left perth australia bound for bali early sunday morning. from 32,000 feet it dropped to 10,000 feet in just minutes, banking sharply as it turned back for perth. on board passengers said the cabin crew panicked. >> we didn't know what was happening because all the voice recordings on the plane were in every language but english. >> lots of people crying, people pulling out their life jackets, pretty much preparing like we thought there was a good chance that we were going to go down. >> reporter: chris was headed to bali with his girlfriend to propose. instead he pulled down his oxygen mask and asked her in midair. airasia was already under the microscope after an engine failure on this flight four months ago. that flight landed safely, so did this one. no injuries at all. australian officials are now

authorities say it's too early to tell if any oil has spilled into that lake. in northern california firefighters are making headway now against those deadly wildfires burning for a second week, but they know there is still a long way to go. let's go back to joe fryer in santa rosa for us. joe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. firefighters say they're turning the corner and making progress despite dry conditions over the weekend. they're fighting stubborn spots that are challenging those on the front lines for days. fueled by coffee and adrenaline, many firefighters are running on empty. >> i think everyone's tired. this has taken a toll on everybody from an emotional standpoint. >> reporter: but cooler temperatures and calmer winds are helping some 11,000 firefighters gain some ground while tent cities are helping them get desperately needed rest. >> if they try to keep us off the line for a couple hours to get us some rest in between shifts. >> reporter: across the region at least a dozen wineries and

vineyards have been destroyed or badly damaged like one of napa's most iconic wine estates dating back to 1989. much of the property was destroyed, it was not a complete loss. >> the winery building which has been here for almost 130 years, it's the heart and soul of this place, is what matters the most. we open the doors and we looked inside and the insides were okay and the cellars were still cool. it gave us a lot of hope. >> reporter: evacuation orders have been lifted in some areas but firefighters are battling in others. >> we're here to do a job, and that's to protect lives and property. >> reporter: for peter lang, his property was secondary when flames from the tubbs fire started moving in destroying his home. >> there was no choice. >> reporter: for lang, who runs safari west, a wildlife sanctuary outside santa rosa, the animals are his priority. >> these are living, breathing things. you got to stick with the living souls. >> reporter: he stuck with them and somehow managed to save all

1,000 birds and animals at the safari park. >> if you love it, you want to preserve it and take care of it. it's your responsibility. most of the animals in the years we've been here were born here. >> reporter: the tradition at safari west lives on with a new addition to the park, a baby antelope born just last friday appropriately named tubbs. the death toll is still at 40 this morning, and the three big fires that have really devastated this region over the past week are now between 40 and 65% contained. and the winds have died down considerably. savannah. >> joe, thank you. now to the ongoing crisis in puerto rico. it's been nearly a month since hurricane maria devastated that island, and problems are still mounting there. this morning there's growing concern tied to the water supply. gabe gutierrez is in san juan. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning.

nearly 70% of puerto rico now has running water, but those who couldn't are getting increasingly desperate. the environmental protection agency telling us that some people are cutting through fencing to get access to potentially dangerous water wells. this morning nearly a month after hurricane maria puerto rico is facing a growing water crisis. some areas don't have it. others like residents of derado west of san juan, fear it could be contaminated. the epa is testing to see whether water from several funds is safe to drink. dorado was added to a list that says it's so polluted. the army and fema are delivering clean water to worried residents. >> have you been drink i any of the -- >> no. a lot of people get sick. >> reporter: only 15% of the u.s. territory has power. that means a population almost the size of nevada is still in

the dark. making it hard to pump and treat water. >> the biggest issue for us on water is really electrical power. >> reporter: the mayor here says the biggest problem is distribution, not enough water. >> help is here, and we are actively seeking ways to maximize the efficiency of the water distribution. >> reporter: relief also coming to the i land of vieques just off puerto rico's southeastern coast. the tourist hot spot shredded by maria. the lines for fuel still stretching for blocks. supplies are scarce. locals like william day estimate almost a third of the island's 9,000 residents have already left. why is it so important for you to stay here? >> i'm a fighter. my message would be that, you know, help us, just help us. >> reporter: the governor here has set an ambitious goal of restoring power to 95% of puerto rico by mid-december. matt? >> gabe gutierrez on this story

>> kids gravitate toward you. they love you. why do you think that is? why are you so good around children? >> well, i grew up in a whole big bunch of kids. eight kids younger than me. i just love kids. i have that high pitched voice, i'm overexaggerated. i look like mother goose or one of the cartoon characters. kids relate to that. >> i don't want to make it sound like childlike immaturity, but you have a childlike enthusiasm about you that i think kids identify with. >> i think so, too. i do think i'm childlike. but that's different from childish. people said why did you wait so long to put this album out. i wanted to wait until my second childhood. >> when did that start? >> a few years back. >> i love the title. such a simple phrase "i believe in you." if you say that to a child at the right time of his or her life, it makes a huge difference. >> it does. and in fact, a lot of these songs are based on the themes of the books that we give away.

the little engine that could was my favorite little book. that's the first book we give out. i pattern that just like the little engine that says i can or the little engine in all of us that says i can. if i can do it, so can you. and i believe in you. >> i heard you singing a song a second ago, there's another song on the album that's about bullying. >> it's called "making fun ain't funny." that's a subject that's worth really pursuing. it's to teach children that they should not do that. oh, there you go. ♪ >> did you have any experience with bullying? >> absolutely. my song "the coat of many colors" where the kids were making fun of me and bullying us because we were poor kids and wore ragged clothes. i know how painful it is. >> you're modest about it so you don't talk about it all that much, but you're a giver. you showed up at vanderbilt children's hospital not long ago. >> friday.

the day the album came out. >> with a big check. >> yes, i did. >> a million dollars? >> yes, for the children's hospital there. because my niece hannah, when she was 4 -- she's 29 now. but she got leukemia. and they took such good care of her. all these many years later god does have his ways of working. so i asked her if she'd come with me down to the hospital. she was so happy. she got to see a lot of her nurses that took care of her when she was little. >> she's doing okay? >> she's great. she was fine after she was like 10 years old we were out of the woods with that. >> you raised eyebrows when you showed up with lily tomlin and jane fonda about a "nine to five" reunion. any chance you'd do the second version of that? >> i don't know. we better get after it or we'll have to call it 95 and not "nine to five." >> you always have time. nice to see you here. >> might i mention that the hero

we're back with "today food" and today we're announcing our second today food class in cooperation with craftsy. he'll be leading the lessons for anybody who wants to learn to make pasta like a pro. and he gave me a special behind the scenes class. take a look. ♪ it's been said that happiness can be found in a bowl of spaghetti. so with that in mind i've gone behind the scenes with chef scott conant as he prepares for his pasta class in his collaboration with craftsy.

>> we're starting with spaghetti aglio e olio. >> does it come with a pronunciation lesson. >> the pasta water needs to be salted so that it tastes like broth. plenty of oil because it's aglio e olio. sliced garlic. >> am i overdoing it? giving this garlic the time of its life. >> grab one strand. it's hot. >> hot pasta. >> so taste it and you'll get that it's still a little too al dente but about 80% cooked. this is the key. there's a liquid and the fat and the starch from the pasta, those will intermingle and that creates a great sauce. a great texture on the exterior of the pasta. >> no garlic, right? >> you're right. i like it.

agitate it a little bit like this. >> i'll agitate it. i'm an agitator. >> i've heard that about you. >> you've been talking to lauer. >> what you want to do is put it towards the end of the pan and then flip up and over. >> oh, sorry. >> no, that's great. >> what do you think? how's the flavor? >> fantastic. really, really good. >> and scott conant -- i'm so nervous -- is with us now. we're ready to cook. >> are you ready? >> i am. the tasters are over there. the judging table, i might call it. >> you've already made this. so i'm going to let you cook. spaghetti aglio e olio. >> it's been cooking. we want to it be al dente, which is italian for just right. i don't know. so we brown this garlic.

>> it's a lightly browned. we'll add a pinch of crushed red pepper. i'm going to turn this up a little bit. >> you want to get that little sizzle. >> and we'll add some of -- >> oh, the pasta water. >> do you know why we use the ta water or why we save it? >> why, savannah. >> because it makes a delicious sauce. >> that's right. well done. >> so here i am cooking. >> here i am cooking. >> we need a pinch of salt. >> there's a pinch of salt in the pasta water. >> a little salt. i like a little salt. >> we'll take this pasta. >> oh, i should do this. >> i'll do it. >> okay. >> and we'll take some of the residual liquid that's dripping off and we'll cook it directly in that pan. >> i want to see savannah do that. >> i'm so glad you asked. thought you'd never ask. i tried to do it two-handed. >> careful. >> yes, yes, yeah. >> sounds like a scene in a

billy crystal movie. >> so we'll let that cook together for a couple minutes. >> okay. >> turn it up a little bit. >> so you do the parsley last. >> we'll just let it kind of -- so a couple things happened. an emulsification happened like we spoke about. the starch is released into the liquid. the liquid is absorbed into the pasta and that pasta tastes like broth. so it has just enough salt so it tastes like broth. >> it tastes like the sea. >> not like the sea. it will reduce. >> i got that from you. >> not like the sea. >> oh, not like the sea. is it done? >> it needs another second. >> how do you know if it's done? >> thank you, hoda. >> you can tell from the way it falls. the way the pasta is falling. this is a little underdone. >> so if it's crunchy, that's not good.
